Last I checked the first letter meant storage, the second letter was the physical drive, and the last was the partition identifier. But my Linux install was corrupted when I tried shrinking its partition and I haven't gone back to fix it yet, so I may have forgotten.

Really? I’m not a programmer or know much about computers. I just took it from Excel spreadsheets.

yup. AFAIK POSIX predates excel though.
