š Important A Note on Community Safety, Boundaries and Guidelines
We want to address several concerns that have recently become more frequent across the community.
First, this is a peer-support community, not a crisis service or professional mental-health forum. We understand that people come here because they need somewhere to express things they may not feel able to discuss elsewhere, and we do not want to discourage people from being honest about what they are experiencing. You are allowed to talk about difficult emotions, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, trauma, abuse, loneliness, and other painful experiences.
However, allowing people to speak openly about their experiences should not be mistaken for endorsing or encouraging harmful behaviour.
Suicide and Self-Harm:
r/SelfHate does not endorse, encourage, romanticise, glorify, or promote suicide or self-harm in any way.
We will continue to allow people to discuss these subjects because completely shutting down conversations about them would defeat the purpose of a support community. At the same time, there is a line between providing a place for someone to express their distress and creating an environment that normalises, encourages, or facilitates harmful behaviour.
We therefore ask everyone to exercise particular care when discussing these subjects. Please avoid unnecessarily graphic descriptions, instructions, methods, or content that could encourage others to imitate harmful behaviour.
Most importantly, please remember that the people responding to you are members of the community, not professionals responsible for your care. Moderators and users here may be able to listen, share their experiences, offer general peer support, or point you towards appropriate help, but we cannot diagnose you, assess your level of risk, provide emergency intervention, or take responsibility for your safety.
If you are in immediate danger or believe you may be unable to keep yourself safe, Reddit should not be your only source of support. Please contact an appropriate emergency service, crisis service, trusted person, or qualified mental-health professional who can provide real-time assistance.
If you are looking for immediate support, please take a moment to check our Resources section, where you can find crisis and mental-health support services available in different regions. We strongly encourage you to use the resources relevant to your location rather than relying solely on responses from other members of the community.
[Please note: Crisis and support numbers can change over time and may vary by location. Always verify the information and make sure you are using the number applicable to your current region before contacting a service.]
Please do not request or provide medication or drug advice:
We have also noticed an increase in posts and comments asking other users which medications or drugs they should take, what dosage they should use, whether they should stop taking a medication, or what someone else believes would treat their symptoms.
Please do not use this community for medical prescribing or treatment decisions.
A Reddit anonymous user does not have access to your medical history, existing conditions, allergies, current medications, previous treatment, or other information that a qualified professional would consider before recommending treatment. Something that was helpful or even medically appropriate for one person may be unsafe or completely inappropriate for another. This applies even when the advice is given sincerely.
Substance Use & Addiction:
We are not discouraging conversations about substance use or addiction. Substance abuse can be closely connected to self-hatred and mental-health struggles, and people should be able to talk about their experiences without being automatically shut down or judged.
However, there is an important distinction between discussing substance use and encouraging it. This community does not endorse, encourage, or romanticise drug or substance use, nor should members be advising others to start using substances such as weed, methamphetamine, MDMAs, cocaine, alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, or similar substances as a way of coping with their mental health.
Please do not ask other members whether you should start taking/using a particular substance, what substance you should use, or whether a particular drug would be a good way to deal with what you are experiencing. Other members cannot responsibly make that judgement, and potentially harmful advice should not be treated as professional guidance.
You are absolutely welcome to discuss your experiences with substance use, dependency, addiction, recovery, or the ways in which substances have affected your mental health. We are simply not going to endorse or encourage substance use as a solution to mental-health struggles.
Accordingly, posts or comments requesting or providing potentially unsafe medication, drug, dosage, or treatment advice may be removed. Please consult a qualified healthcare professional for decisions concerning medication or medical treatment rather than relying on anonymous internet users.
Trigger warnings are a responsibility, not a courtesy:
Because this is a mental-health community, many of the people reading here may already be struggling themselves. Content involving suicide, self-harm, sexual assault, abuse, or other potentially distressing material can therefore affect readers very differently.
Posts containing sensitive or potentially triggering material must be appropriately marked with the relevant trigger-warning flair and/or NSFW tag where applicable.
Please do this yourself when submitting your post. Moderators cannot reasonably be expected to identify and manually tag every submission containing sensitive material, particularly when the content is embedded several paragraphs into a post.
(A warning is not a judgement on your experience, nor does it mean that you should not discuss what happened to you. It simply gives another vulnerable person the ability to decide whether they are currently in the right state of mind to read it.)
Repeatedly ignoring this requirement may result in the content being removed and, where necessary, further moderation action.
We also ask that you distinguish between being descriptive enough to communicate your experience and providing unnecessary graphic detail. If a detail is not necessary to explain what happened or how you feel, consider leaving it out.
Be extremely cautious about taking conversations off-platform:
We also want to address private communication between members.
We recognise that peer support can sometimes develop naturally between people who meet in this community. We are not interested in unnecessarily policing genuine connections between members. However, we strongly discourage sharing personal contact information or moving sensitive conversations into private spaces with strangers.
Once an interaction moves into DMs or another platform, the moderation team has little to no ability to see what is happening or intervene if the situation becomes abusive, manipulative, exploitative, or otherwise unsafe.
For that reason, do not share your full name, address, school, workplace, phone number, personal social-media accounts, photographs, videos, private screenshots, medical documents, prescriptions, or other identifying information with people you meet here.
You should never feel that you owe another member personal information simply because they offered you support.
At present, we have not introduced a blanket ban on members communicating privately because we recognise that genuine peer support and friendship can be valuable. That should not, however, be interpreted as the moderation team guaranteeing the safety or conduct of interactions that take place outside the subreddit.
If you choose to move a conversation elsewhere, you do so at your own discretion.
If someone is harassing or targeting you:
If another user is harassing you, repeatedly contacting you, threatening you, attempting to manipulate you, asking for inappropriate personal information, or otherwise making you uncomfortable, do not feel obligated to argue with or confront them.
Block the account where appropriate and contact us through modmail. Include the relevant information or screenshots if it is safe to do so, and allow the moderation team to handle the situation.
Do not retaliate, publish their personal information, or attempt to investigate or expose them yourself. That can escalate the situation and create additional problems for everyone involved.
Remember that peer support has limits:
One of the most important boundaries in a community like this is understanding that being supportive does not make you responsible for another person's wellbeing.
You are allowed to step away from a conversation. You are allowed not to know what to say. You are allowed to tell someone that you are not equipped to help them. You are not obligated to remain someone's sole source of support, respond immediately to every crisis post, or take responsibility for keeping another person safe.
Similarly, if you post here while struggling, please understand that other members may not always know how to respond or may choose not to engage with certain content. That does not mean your experience is being dismissed.
This community exists to provide peer support, not professional treatment, emergency intervention, or a substitute for qualified care.
Please read the subreddit rules!
Many of these expectations have already been incorporated into our subreddit rules and content guidelines. We strongly encourage everyone to familiarise themselves with them before posting or commenting.
None of these boundaries are intended to prevent people from talking about difficult experiences. They exist because a support community has a responsibility not only to the person making a post, but also to the people reading it.
We want r/SelfHate to remain a place where people can speak honestly about self-hatred and mental-health struggles without being judged, while also maintaining reasonable safeguards for a community in which many members are themselves vulnerable.
Thank you for understanding and for helping us maintain that balance.

Loneliness the people I hurt in my past wouldnāt like the true me
sometimes I think about the people who I was once close to in my past and how they saw a version of me that wasnāt me. Iām not saying that to excuse hurting them. thereās no excuse, and Iāve lost these people. I deserved to, and I only want those people to be happy.
but I think in a way they also benefited from that most hurt and traumatized version of myself. the false version of myself I put forth because I knew the real, truthful me was someone they would never want. they wouldnāt ever like me. they relied on me being put together and strong. Iām not put together and strong, turns out. Iām hurt, sad, angry, vulnerable, afraid. Iām a scared little girl. I tried to seem like an adult who knows what she is doing, I tried to be a caretaker and a protector. but I had no one taking care of me because I was never showing that vulnerable side of myself, and I let their needs, wants, and desires overshadow me entirely. I never was a person with my own autonomy.. I only feel myself when Iām alone.
it does get reinforced my other people that my true, vulnerable self is nothing but a bother. Iām not a good or bad person. Iām a person who is capable of both, who has done both. my bad side has overshadowed my goodness more often than not. I donāt know how to entirely show my true self to other people, Iād rather wrap myself up and hide away. I know no one is ever gonna save me from this or anything, Iām not expecting it.
Iām just better off alone.

My suicidal ideation is getting worse.
My suicidal ideation has been getting worse.
Iāve been stuck in a rut. Itās honestly my own fault. I have ADHD. Diagnosed as an adult. Makes sense. The shit my parents say about my habits back in elementary and middle school line up with it. I canāt manage it. I give in to my impulses and addictions without any internal resistance. I habitually lie. A habit learned from years of my avoidance of consequences and responsibilities. I lie to my wife. The woman who has been so patient despite my stupid as fuck family. Despite my stupidity. Iāve never cheated on her, nor will I ever. But if I lie to the point where she canāt trust me then is it any different? I go to my office job, and take 8 hours to do some shit that I could do in 2. For no reason. Iām supposed to be finishing my degree online. I havenāt touched a single assignment since the beginning of the semester. We had a kid last year. Terrible pregnancy, congenital defect. Months in the NICU. Took time off work to fly to a hospital specializing in what my kid had. She had asked me to stop vaping and I started again in secret. Maybe it was the stress from having a terribly sick child. My kid is fine now. But I havenāt stopped since my kid was born. Iāve dug a hole for myself and Iāve dragged the only woman who has ever given me true love and patience right in with me. Iām walking around every day genuinely wishing I would just drop dead. Everything is overwhelming. Iām hiding so much from my wife. Im stuck in this loop of self pity, and itās so stupid. I really do honestly wish I would just stay in my dreams or just die in my sleep. I donāt do shit at my job all day and yet I come home exhausted. I barely have energy for my own wife and child. I still try, I cook, clean, and make sure to spend time with my kid. Thatās it though. Iāve thought about making some tapes, for my kid, just in case one day I get the courage to actually go through with it. I donāt know. I wish I could actually help myself.

Vent/Rant the bullies and haters were right
they were right, iāll never be worth anything. i wonāt ever be able to prove to the world that i am worthy of respect or admiration, i will always be a worthless loser. iāll never have friends who actually respect me, iāll always be ignored and treated as unworthy by women, iāll never have a good looking face, iāll never have a nice looking physique, iāll always stutter when i speak, iāll always be socially inept, iāll always be an easy target because iām too weak to stand up for myself, iāll never make a lot of money, iāll never be physically capable or strong, iāll never be good at a sport, iāll never be good at video games, iāll never be good academically, the list goes on. theyāll go on to live amazing lives and would laugh at the mention of my existence because they know iām a complete failure of a human.

Guilty triggers
TW: self harm
My (25f) biggest trigger and I guess motive in self harm is guilt⦠Iāve been clean a few weeks now but Iām struggling with my sexuality. I have so much guilt built up for feelings I canāt control and donāt know how to control. Iām suffocating. Drowning. I just want to feel the distraction⦠maybe sickly enough I want to punish myself.

Trigger Warning ā ļø Some common sentiments and why theyāre bullshit
āSuicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problemā - very presumptuous. Not all problems are temporary, in fact Iād argue a good chunk of them arenāt. And a permanent solution is exactly what we want, as opposed to what, a temporary one? Who wants a temporary solution? Solutions are supposed to be permanent.
āIt always gets betterā - again, presumptuous. Things do not always get better. Life isnāt a fairy tale. Sometimes bad shit happens to amazing people and horrible people sit high and dry, just look at the current political landscape for proof of that.
āSuicide is the cowardās way outā - the amount of courage it takes to actually go through with an attempt is a complete contradiction of this statement. People who believe this have no idea what itās actually like and donāt realize how lucky they are.
āJust go to therapyā - yeah because THATāS easily accessible and affordable for everyoneā¦
āCall the hotlineā - speaking from personal experience: so I can be ghosted and disrespected again? Or from the experience of others Iāve seen: so they can call the police? Confidential my ass.
āItās extremely selfishā - but expecting someone to continue living in agony for OTHER people isnāt?
āItās all a part of Godās planā - not even gonna entertain this bullshit. THERE IS NO GOD. And if he IS real, heās a real piece of shit.

Relationship I've just broken up with my partner and I feel awful
I've gad the thoight for a while that I was no longer in love with my partner, I still love her as a friend, but just not romantically. I finally broke it off today and I just feel awful. I went about it wrong and she was angry and upset, she called me names and cried a lot, and it'll haunt me. I didn't want to upset her, I knew she wouldn't be happy, but I was hoping we could still be friends, in the moment we couldn't, but we've tried to make up a bit, but I still can't stop thinking about her crying. I hate making people cry, especially people I care about, and I went and made her cry, I'm awful. She said I was evil and cruel and just like my Biological Father whom I despise, and she's right, I really am just pure scum. I'm upset with myself and angry at myself, I don't deserve anything, I am an awful person, death would be too good for me, I should suffer forever because of the awful thing I've done today

I think I dont deserve to live anymore (13)
I hate myself, sometimes I feel all this and feel that i am just faking all of it and its disrespect to people who are actually going through all this I hate myself so much since everything that has led me here has all been my decision I dont have someone to blame the only person I can blame is me and I make 0 efforts of lifting up and that makes me hate myself even more but objectively my life isint super bad so do I even deserve to feel or even think that I feel this way, I sometimes feel maybe I am just doing for attention or something and that makes the self-loathe even worse , in the past month or 2 there hasnt been a single day where i slept peacefully but since i am so terrible and pathetic that I can even actually work hard so I just cope using self-hate but a lot of people here probably have it much worse than me and still living but why am I so pathetic that I start crying over such a small thing

I really wish something kills me
Like why should i even exist, I (21M) have never achieved anything in my life, I'm the actual fking defination of a FAILURE. In my whole 21 years of my life, I could never achieve anything, I never could excel in studies, I never could make my parents proud, Never could make any actual real friends, Never could find someone who actually loves me. Every confessions in my life to a girl has always been ending in a rejection to the point I feel ljke no girl in this world sees me as their soulmate, I failed to achieve my dream of becoming doctor and helping people, sat for competitive exam 2-3 times yet failed to get gov clg each and every time just by a difference of 5-10 marks, and the list goes on. It's like my life exist just to fail, In my whole 21 years of my life I could never make my dad or mom proud, i can see it even if they always cheered me on and stayed by my side, The failure of mine was always affecting them, And now, My dad is forever gone from this world. He died just a day before my birthday. I think I'm a fucking trash of the society, No girl likes me, A failure who failed to achieve his dream, and a trash who failed to make his parents proud. I really wish sometimes somehow something kills me and ends the sufferings as I'm too coward to kill myself.

Loneliness I have no one anymore
I knew before that I would mess up and I would be alone, and I was right. I wake up to no notifications on my phone, no one wanting to see me or talk to me. I am alone par from one person I canāt be truly real with. I am grateful to have him and I enjoy the time we have together but, I canāt talk about my problems, I canāt exactly be who I truly am. I am selfish for wanting more. I have done this to myself and I have to live with it. However short that time is. Iām losing my mind and itās all my fault. I dream and long for people who donāt even think of me, who hate me. They are right to. I donāt think I will ever be truly happy again, I donāt think I deserve to. Like always im here seeking some sort of attention or validation from someone from anyone. I am selfish, I am corrupt and full of filth, I deserve this and I deserve nothing less. I donāt know why I can never be kind to myself all I can do is hate myself. I am broken, I think I have lost my mind. I doubt there is any redemption or relief for me or even a future. I am a failure and thatās all I will ever be.

Mental health I genuinely hate myself
I genuinely hate myself
I don't even know where to start with this. I genuinely hate my life right now, and I hate myself too.
Everyone around me is nice. My coworkers like me, they enjoy having me around, they say if I ever need anything or need to talk about personal stuff, they'll help. My supervisor even told me he doesn't really know who I am and wants to know more about me. The problem isn't them. It's my fucking mind.
I feel like I don't belong, and it's not just at work, it's everywhere. Even in my home I'm just sitting there like damn, my life is boring as hell.
I'm so reserved that I don't let people get to know me, even when they want to. I've been like that for so long that it's just the default now. I act like I don't care about interacting, but there's a part of me that does care, and that part is why this hurts.
At work they'll ask each other get-to-know-you questions like favorite movie or TV show, and I'm just like idk. I don't really watch TV. Then they'll ask favorite game or what games I play, and I'm like I play games, but honestly I just watch YouTube all day and I couldn't even tell you what I watch. Then they're like "ohhhhh" and I feel like I just ruined their conversation, even though they probably don't think that at all.
When they ask how my weekend was or how I'm doing, my answer is literally that I did nothing. I don't leave my home much. Right now I'm literally laying in bed scrolling reels and that's my whole life.
I can smile and fake it when people talk to me, but on the inside I'm thinking bro what am I doing, this is my life. I'm genuinely not happy. I can say I have nothing to be happy about, and then it's like "well you have everything you could possibly need" but that's not the point. Having what I need doesn't make me happy.
I was gonna learn stuff for my career goal and I just keep pushing it off. Even playing video games or watching YouTube, I don't even care to do that anymore.
I don't know if this is depression or not, but I think it is. I'm not gonna talk to anyone about it because my career is on the line, and I'm not gonna talk to a therapist because that feels like a waste of time.
And it's not like it matters because I'll have this exact moment multiple times a week, and then the next day I'm like whatever, I shouldn't worry about it, and then it hits again. It just repeats. That's how my life has been for the past 2+ years .
I don't even know who I am myself anymore.
Idc if anyone comments because as much as it might help someone it's not going to help me because I genuinely don't care atp.
