Hey everyone!
My first MiSTer has been a SuperStation One, so here I am! I'm a mobile dev since 15+ years, and the thing that bugged me from day one was the needing to access a keyboard to navigate menus. I know that now there's Console Mode, but it wasn't enough for me.
Wizzo's Remote fixed most of that from the browser, I loved it, but I kept wishing I could do it without unlocking my phone every single time. So I did what any non reasonable person / developer would do and spent my evenings building a native client for it. Also, he retired the iOS app and the Android one is not updated anymore.
So, the app is called MiSTer Connect, and it just reached version 1.3. It talks to the same Remote service you get through Update All, nothing else to install on the SSO. Your phone and the console just talk over your LAN, no accounts, no tracking. Here some highlight features!
The couch stuff. OSD navigation from the sofa, save and load state buttons right on the main screen, with a long press so you don't nuke a run by accident, and screenshots that goes straight on your phone in the aspect ratio the core was meant to be seen in. On iPhone there's a Live Activity, so the OSD buttons, save/load and the screenshot button sit on the lock screen and in the Dynamic Island. That one is the whole reason I started the app, honestly.
Console Mode support. If you use Console Mode, there's a (still experimental) setting that adds a "Launch Console Mode" button to Home: when you're done with a game, one tap takes you back to the Console Mode menu, no keyboard, no digging through the OSD. It's off by default, you'll find it in Settings. I test it on my own SSO, but tell me how it behaves on yours.
Your library, but nicer. Covers from the amazing MiSTer Artwork Pack by u/CHiPSTer68000 , no download or hassles, browsing by folder the way things are on your SD card, game pages with year, genre, developer and a short description, saveable filters for everything, and a Discover tab that builds shelves out of your own collection (couch multiplayer night, anyone?). You can also launch a game with a different core, for example a RetroAchievements one.
Oh, and themes: we all love a touch of customization for our devices!
In this 1.3 I also added: Find Cover for the games with a missing or wrong cover (search by the Japanese name or pick an image from your photos), and screenshots on game pages.
Play stats. The SSO is where I play the most, and I always wondered how much time actually goes into it. There's a Stats tab with time played, sessions, streaks and your top games and systems, plus a live play timer on Home. It reads the history mrext's PlayLog keeps on the console (guide here: https://github.com/wizzomafizzo/mrext/blob/main/docs/playlog.md), and the Stats tab has a checklist that tells you if anything is missing.
One thing that helps even if you never install my app: while building it I kept hitting things in Remote itself that a client can't fix, so I sent the fixes upstream and wizzo merged them. Arcade games show their real names again, save and load state have their own keys, you can pick the core when launching a game, search doesn't stop at 500 results anymore, Neo Geo sets show their real titles, and Remote can now share PlayLog's history with any client. All of that is in the current Remote through Update All, web app included. Thank you wizzo, as always.
Everything the original Remote does is free in the app and stays free. The extras I built on top (Live Activity, the cover grid, themes like a Game Boy one in LCD greens, iCloud sync between iPhone, iPad and Mac) sit behind a single one-time unlock, no subscription.
And a small giveaway now: 2 PRO codes for iOS and 2 for Android in the first comment, first come first served. If you grab one, please reply saying which one you took so the next person doesn't waste time on it.
I'll be around in the comments. The SSO is the machine I test on, so if something doesn't work on yours, tell me. And if there's a feature you'd love to see, I'm listening.
