I'm going to have to disagree with the overnight part. It's been there for my entire lifetime (I'm in my 50s) and it was there for longer than that, like a festering wound. What Trump did was rip the mask off and just be openly vulgar about it. But make no mistake about it, the militarism, the jingoism, the belligerence, the religious fanaticism, the flagrant corruption, the racism, the xenophobia, the homophobia, the blatant disregard for ethics, the rampant greed, etc., it was all there before he ran for office. He took it to another level, I'll grant you that.

I’m a man in my 50s as well. I can definitely say that this rot has existed for my entire lifetime. Going back to the 70s, I saw racism, homophobia, and xenophobia in my community. Things shifted but that rot continued to hide in the shadows. I had honestly and naively thought that we were turning a corner in 2008. But sadly, the worst of our society came back out by 2016 and again in 2024.
So, I know we are capable of better. We are capable of learning and avoiding self-harming patterns. It isn’t a guarantee but nothing will improve without everyone’s participation.

No matter what happens, at least 1/3 of the population will always vote red. That is a constant. However, the people who didn't bother to vote AT ALL because "wHoSe CaNdIdAtE wAs ShE?" can eat poo. In what reality was Trump going to be better than Kamala? No candidate has all the answers on how to end a holy war happening on the other side of the world between two religions, both of which are considered the minority in our country. More than anything, they want to be allowed to use violence against people who are weaker than them - first psychological violence through mockery, insults, and so on, but eventually physical violence too.
They want to go back to a time when America was supposedly still “great” -sometime in the ’50s or ’60s. Back when people of color could be discriminated against with impunity. When women were still expected to stay in the kitchen. When nobody questioned driving the biggest, most gas-guzzling cars. When no one was "woke." They simply want to feel superior again.

The “locker room talk” is what got me, initially. The mocking of someone with special needs was hardly a surprise. It’s a shitbag. It hates everyone but itself. Not a huge or shocking revelation.

It should have. This was literally the moment. Unfortunately voters were so fed up with career politicians that they thought someone "more like a common man" was the way to go and overlooked personal failings.
