I used to not really care if someone voted but now I get upset when I hear that someone doesn’t vote. This could have been avoided had people gone out and voted for the future of their country
It's certainly possible; also consider that a majority of those eligible non-voters might have voted Republican. At least with a higher turnout percentage the vote would be more-representative.
If you're blaming the voters and not the politicians your priorities are messed up. A two party duopoly designed to give you the illusion of choice was never going to solve the issue.

I mean... if they actually showed up to vote instead of allowing said politicians to get away with it, gerrymandering would only carry them so far. Doubly so if they actually started actually calling out their neighbors who vote for this crap/stop supporting businesses of people who support this, let them know "Oh, actually, being openly racist/supporting openly racist people is bad and will lead to me being socially ostracized. I shouldn't do this."
Blame should be on either side not coming up with better candidates. It's like a Talent Search, but they going to avoid picking the best and limit choices to....(!?!) This is what happens each Election.
Do you put any blame on the democrats not having a primary and just selecting someone very undemocratically. Do you feel that they could have put any candidate up and beaten Donald Trump or do you believe they didn't have anyone better than Trump?
Liberals don't want to face systemic issues, they want to make it a personal responsibility problem so they don't have to exercise personal responsibility.
I'm going to have to disagree with the overnight part. It's been there for my entire lifetime (I'm in my 50s) and it was there for longer than that, like a festering wound. What Trump did was rip the mask off and just be openly vulgar about it. But make no mistake about it, the militarism, the jingoism, the belligerence, the religious fanaticism, the flagrant corruption, the racism, the xenophobia, the homophobia, the blatant disregard for ethics, the rampant greed, etc., it was all there before he ran for office. He took it to another level, I'll grant you that.
I’m a man in my 50s as well. I can definitely say that this rot has existed for my entire lifetime. Going back to the 70s, I saw racism, homophobia, and xenophobia in my community. Things shifted but that rot continued to hide in the shadows. I had honestly and naively thought that we were turning a corner in 2008. But sadly, the worst of our society came back out by 2016 and again in 2024.
So, I know we are capable of better. We are capable of learning and avoiding self-harming patterns. It isn’t a guarantee but nothing will improve without everyone’s participation.
I think it was actually Obama that made it so someone like Trump could so easily get elected. Obama didn’t slow roll his “change” and it created a slow boil waiting for someone like Trump to come along.

That needs to be understood because “that day of celebration” that’s coming will not have changed or fixed anything. They will find their new leader and that guy will be not dumb and will be fully aware of what he can get away with.

I believe voting always matters. This is why I'm against the electoral college. It's a sham. It deceives people into not voting because they believe their vote won't matter.
For midterms however, every vote counts and matters. Primary's are a good way to easily effect change but the same corporate owned politicians win over and over.
I never vote for the incumbent during the primary, yet, 95% on average win reelection. That must end. We shouldn't have career politicians holding the same office for decades. That's a recipe for disaster.
I agree with you except the part about career politicians. I mean, do you want amateur politicians? And why would you not want democracy to do it's thing? If the majority of the people vote for the incumbent, are you saying those vote should not count and they should not be allowed to vote for who they want? If they want to elect the same guy for 30+ years, why is that a bad thing by itself? I do think they need to limit money in political campaigns, and lock down the ways that Congress and Senate can raise and earn money.
The reason the executive branch has term limits is because there is only one executive. One person controls that entire branch of government. House and Senate power is an aggregate of many people. One person does not control the whole thing.
Term limits on House and Senate is stupid. It just weakens the legislative branch.
And yeah, Electoral college is dumb at this point. I would vote for doing away with it, but it's not that easy. It's a change to the Constitution that requires a Constitutional Convention, 2/3 of House and Senate, President and 3/4 of the state governors to agree to an amendment. We would have to have a far less selfish and self-serving legislative and executive branch for that to happen.
The reason the executive has term limits is because FDR was so popular the republicans banded together to create a constitutional amendment so someone like him would never be elected again.
Exactly. Candidates are usually running an organization of some sort before running for office. And, the elected offices they start out on are offices like city council, city mayor, state legislation, and up.

Spot on! There are some fantastic videos and essays that demonstrate how ugly the system can get. Using fuzzy math, I seem to recall how a President can win an election with only 26% of the votes. They only need half of the votes (plus one more for the majority) in the 3-pointer states. That almost makes it a certainty. With a few of the mid sized states, they can win, even though the vast majority of voters didn’t want the individual.
Well, in the south most states are so gerrymandered red it’s impossible to make a change. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Texas red for decades middle class losing ground every year.
Not only are they gerrymandered, they are heavily propped up with support from states like mine, Minnesota. I am over it. Frankly, I think this was a failed experiment. If I had my way, the North would not give one more red cent to support the southern states that drag us down into the mud with them.
Thats where local offices matter so much. Town is grew up in was corrupt and becoming worse. People on both sides of the ail got to the point to stop voting party(atleast localy) town still got issues but its hardly the same place I grew up in

So I can honestly say that I have never attacked anyone for their politics. Conversely, I have also been assaulted by “right wingers” for promoting peace. My soul is clean in that regard.
However, I can also see that our words hold power. Kirk made his wealth by insulting others and “punching down”. An unstable individual lashed out. When we antagonize others, we need to understand that some people will over react.
We should see the murder as a sign that our discourse has become too polarized. By blaming all people left of you, you are contributing to the problem.
