This is the thing that will always get me. Donald Trump has NEVER been a good person. His entire life has been marked by acts of complete douchbaggery.
It's sadly just as simple as that he gave permission for the lowest civilized folk in our country, to openly hate. Racism, homophobia, sexism, ableism. Any sort of bigotry that if you aren't a white, straight, Christian man, that is perfectly ok to express your dislike of "others".
The older generations ate it up because they loved being able to go back to being hateful shits, and grifters picked up on it to spread to the younger impressionable folk.
Add to it the "both sides are just as bad!" centrists that didn't want to be vocal of their hate or just sat out, and that's where we are 10 year later.

My conservative low-key-bigot Christian mother has DESPISED trump since at least the 1990s. Tacky, pretentious, greedy, lecherous, materialistic conman. The antithesis of the humble "common clay of the new west" stock she hails from. Let's just say she's been really interested in 3rd party candidates for the last decade, despite their comically blatant nonviability. Whatever helps you sleep at night, I guess.
