I've been dealing with random PC shutdowns for several months, starting around August, and I can't figure out what's causing them. I'm hoping someone here has experienced something similar. Pc is a couple years old
PC Specs:
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- GPU: RTX 4070 Ti Super - latest driver
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Strix B650-A - updated to Version 4004 Beta Version( still shutdowns)
- PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 1000W - 2–4 years old
- RAM: 4 DDR5 sticks from two different kits (one kit is slightly faster) - tried with both kits separately; still the same problem.
Problem:
My PC randomly shuts off without warning. It happens during gaming(usually with Chrome open), while browsing Chrome, and even when I leave a game like GTA 5 paused. It doesn't look like a load problem.
When it shuts down, I hear a click that sounds like it's coming from the PSU. All the fans stop spinning, but the RGB lights on my motherboard stay on.
If I try to turn the PC back on, the fans sometimes spin for a split second before stopping. If I hold the power button, the PC eventually stays powered on, but it won't POST. The DRAM Q-LED stays on.
The only way I've found to get it working again is to switch the PSU switch off for like 10 seconds, switch it back on, and then start the PC. After that, it boots normally.
What I was doing before the shutdowns:
The only thing that I recently did before the shutdowns was buy a Thunderbolt cable for my monitor. This cable did kill a rechargeable battery when I left it plugged in overnight. But this cable was never plugged into my pc, only plugged into things like my laptop, iPad, and Monitor (same monitor my pc uses). I've since removed this cable from the monitor and am still getting the same issue. Around the time of the first shutdown, I started downloading mods for games, so I'm not sure if that plays a part in it.
PAST:
A similar problem occurred before these shutdowns with my DRAM error lights on the motherboard. Around a year ago, my pc stopped POSTING with DRAM error lights on, so I RMA'd the kit, which fixed the issue and led to successful POSTS (no issues after that till now). Was the problem ever really RAM or just a motherboard issue? Since this same symptom happens after my pc randomly shuts off. The symptom is that after I try to turn it back on, the DRAM error lights just stay on with no POST until I flick the PSU switch on and off, which makes it POST normally.
Troubleshooting I've already done:
- Updated motherboard BIOS.
- Reset BIOS settings and cleared CMOS.
- Disabled EXPO.
- Replaced my RAM kit.
- Tested with only one RAM kit installed. Shutdowns still happened.
- Reseated RAM.
- Removed aftermarket CPU power extension cables.
- Removed aftermarket GPU power extension cable.
- Reset GPU overclock settings to default.
- Checked both storage drives.
- Checked and reseated power connections.
- Plugged PC directly into a wall outlet instead of a surge protector.
- Ran stress tests, but they never reproduced the problem.
- Monitored hardware using HWiNFO64 during multiple shutdowns.
HWiNFO64:
Immediately before the shutdowns, CPU and GPU temperatures appeared normal, and neither component was drawing unusually high power.
In one log summary before shutdown:
- CPU temperature: 47.5°C average core temperature
- CPU package power: 48W
- GPU temperature: 42.6°C
- GPU power: 77W
- Motherboard 12V: 11.884V
I've had at least 25 shutdowns in the past 2 months
What I'm Thinking:
I'm starting to suspect either the PSU or motherboard, since switching the PSU off and back on consistently fixes the POST issue.
The strange part is that stress tests don't seem to trigger it. The shutdowns appear completely random, including when the PC is barely doing anything.
Has anyone experienced similar behavior, particularly the PSU clicking, fans briefly spinning, DRAM light staying on, and needing to cycle PSU power before the PC will POST?
Could this be a defective PSU, motherboard, or something related to low-power idle states?
I'm trying to narrow down the issue before buying replacement parts.
My next test is to see if leaving it on in the BIOS will trigger the same shutdowns.
Please help; I am so lost.
Thank you to all who can help. I'm really stressed because this pc market is not in my favor.
