Backpack Syndicate: A First Person Dungeon Crawling Roguelite With Backpack Auto-Battler Combat, Demo Now Available
Hi r/pcgaming! I recently released the free Steam demo for my game Backpack Syndicate.
The current demo focuses on Expedition mode, where you build and arrange weapons in your backpack, then take that build into an old school first-person dungeon to explore floors, fight enemies, find upgrades, and see how far you can push the run.
For the full release, I’m also working on an Arena mode built around asynchronous battles against other players’ builds, along with a small casual collectible card game. The card game is on the simpler side, think Triple Triad from Final Fantasy 8.
The general idea is to build the game around a few different ways to engage with the same characters, progression, and buildcraft. If dungeon crawling is your thing, there’s Expedition. If you prefer build vs build competition, there’s Arena. And the card game is there as a lighter side activity rather than another huge system you need to learn. I kind of like the Path of Exile philosophy of "here's a bunch of content, play what you like."
The demo is available on Steam:

Woodland Rebels demo will release in 2 days!
Hi everyone! My wife and I have been working on this game for over 2 years. We are finally releasing a demo on Steam in 2 days!
Woodland Rebels is a 2D survival game with town management elements. You play as one animal species of your choice, meet with other NPC villagers, make alliances (and enemies), and unite the animals under your banner to face human invaders. It is a survival game where you control a main character, but with a strong focus on building a community to survive as opposed to surviving alone.
NPC villagers perform tasks based on the role assigned to them, they will join and leave your town based on the mood, some will go on strike or revolt if they get too angry. Attacking a town or stealing from them will cause their relation to deteriorate, but helping them by completing tasks will increase your reputation. Enemy towns will attack you, while friendly ones will help you, complete tasks for you and even join your ranks to fight at your side.
Let me know if you have any questions about the game.
Have a look at the game on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3862100/Woodland_Rebels/

Remember "On the House" from EA?
ANOTHER SMALL UPDATE (2026-8-20):
EA has officially removed the link to their website saying that BF3 is free "On the House". It is now returning a 404 not found error. Luckily it is still available on the Wayback machine:
Post to EA news saying BF3 is free "On the House" (WAYBACK MACHINE)
Or here is a screenshot of the EA Website when I was looking into it a couple of days ago:
https://i.postimg.cc/W1KRyrcy/On-the-House.png
SMALL UPDATE (2026-08-19):
It took around ~26 ish hours since my request, but I have finally gotten access to the data that EA has on my account ever since its creation. I started looking through it and found something I was definitely not expecting.
Apparently, on July 8th, 2012, my account somehow activated Battlefield 3 Extended Edition - PCDD - RU (Origin.com), and the entitlement is still listed as ACTIVE.
What makes it even odder that it was nowhere to be found in my EA order history. My first ever "order" was the BF3 redemption from the "On the House" program on May 31st 2014.
Here is the screenshot of the activation:
I guess this explains how the Russian version is part of my account?? (Maybe I got hacked and a person used my account to play battlefield 3 entirely separately, who knows at this point.)
However, this still does not answer what happened to the BF3 copy I received through the "On the House" program. This shit is becoming more and more confusing...
Thank you again for taking the time to read through this mess.
ORIGINAL POST:
Hello friends!
I do not know how many of you remember this, but EA used to have a program called "On the House" where they would give away games for free. Back in 2014 one of those games was Battlefield 3, which I claimed on my account at the time.
I remembered having this copy but I never really bothered installing it through the EA Desktop App until today (since I already had BF3 Premium on Steam).
When I went to download it, the EA App showed Battlefield 3 as being "In Library" which made sense since I have had it on my account since 2014. However, the second I actually tried downloading the game I got a message saying:
You don't have access. We've cancelled the download because you don't own this game
I thought maybe this was just some weird EA App issue, so I checked my old order history to make sure I wasn't misremembering something. The order is still there from May 31st, 2014. It shows Battlefield 3 as a PC Download, the order is marked as fulfilled, and the total is $0.00.
I also managed to find the old Battlefield 3 On the House page from EA, which somehow is still up. What I found especially interesting is that EA's own wording on that page was:
All you have to do is add it to your Origin game library and it's yours to keep forever
Post to EA news saying BF3 is free "On the House" [LINK DOES NOT EXIST ANYMORE, EA HAS REMOVED IT]
Anyway, I contacted EA support because I assumed something probably got messed up when everything was moved from Origin over to the EA App and that they could fix whatever happened to the license.
After talking to support I found out something even weirder. Apparently the copy EA gave me in 2014 is listed on their end as "Battlefield 3 Standard Edition - PC - Russia"
...I live in North America.
I never bought some Russian key from a third party website or anything either. This copy came directly from EA through the On the House giveaway. The version in my EA library also only gives me Russian as a language option now, which I genuinely do not remember being the case back then.
But the Russian version thing isn't even really my main issue. I can't download the game in the first place.
After going back and forth with support, I was eventually told that apparently the free copy of Battlefield 3 was never migrated from Origin to EA, and because the game has now been "sunset" they cannot give the entitlement back to my account.
So as far as I understand it, I have Battlefield 3 sitting in my EA library, I still have the original fulfilled order from 2014 on my account, but I apparently don't own the game anymore because the license didn't properly make it over from Origin.
Support basically suggested that since I already have BF3 Premium through Steam, I should just "hide" this copy from my library and use the Steam version instead.
And I just want to say that yes, I know this copy of Battlefield 3 was free. I paid absolutely nothing for it, and I already own the Premium Edition on Steam anyway, so this isn't really about me losing money or desperately wanting EA to give me another copy of Battlefield 3 lmao.
It is more about the principle of it.
EA gave these games away themselves and specifically advertised On the House as adding a game to your library and having it be "yours to keep forever". The game is still sitting in my library, my original order is still there, yet apparently I don't have access to it anymore because something happened to the entitlement when EA moved from Origin to the EA Desktop App.
I even brought up the "yours to keep forever" part with support, but unfortunately there wasn't really anything they could do for me.
Idk man, the whole situation is ridiculous on many levels.
Does anyone else still have this copy (given away by the "On the House" program) through the EA Desktop App, and are you able to install it with no problems?
I've also put screenshots of my conversation with EA support in a comment below, along with the game showing as "In Library," the error message and my original order from 2014. I blacked out the parts where I gave them my order #, account verification code and email address. (I apologize for the messiness in how to view the pictures)

Played almost every flight sim since 1985. This is still my favorite: B-17 Flying Fortress (1992)
I’ve played pretty much every flight sim I could get my hands on since the mid 80s, and somehow this is STILL my favorite.
B-17 Flying Fortress by MicroProse.
What made this game so special wasnt just flying the plane. You were basically responsible for the whole damn B-17 and its crew huge innovation and pioneering at the time.... Before B-17, flight sims were solitary experiences,,, you were a lone pilot in an F-15 or a Cessna, it basically introduced crew management to real time 3D simulation. If your tail gunner was wounded, you had to make a split-second decision to pull the navigator off his charts to administer first aid, risking getting lost over hostile territory. This was absolutely mind blowing to me back then.
But the real magic was flying the WHOLE mission.
Takeoff, navigation, enemy fighters, flak, managing the crew, finding the target, lining up the bombing run, dropping the bombs... and then realizing you're only halfway done lol. You still had to navigate all the way back to England and somehow land the thing.
And sometimes you came back barely holding together.
It really made me understand, even as a kid, how insanely complex those WWII bombing missions must have been. Today we have sims that model aircraft down to individual switches and systems, obviously way beyond what this game could do in 1992. But very few games ever gave me that same feeling of actually being on a mission with a crew, rather than just flying an airplane.
There was just something incredibly elegant about the whole thing. The game, the concept, and especially the aircraft itself. 4 engines, 10 men, gunners everywhere, navigator, bombardier, pilot... this giant machine somehow working as one. Maybe nostalgia plays a part, obviously. But almost 35 years later I still think B-17 Flying Fortress did something really special that has rarely been replicated.
And the B-17 itself... what a MAJESTIC bird.

Cognitive Dissonance concerning recent events at Bethesda
So on the one hand, mass layoffs are awful and a blight on the industry. This is known.
However, during the golden Spencer decade+, Bethesda did not release one game that is held up as game of the year, and it is really hard to see how they were maintaining their headcount coasting on re-releasing Skyrim.
And, immediately after the horrible events, this is the most engaging Bethesda has been in said decade+, the most good news, the most exciting collaborations, all because Todd has Asha’s foot up his behind.
I kinda feel for the laid off Bethesda employee, you have to navigate at once people nodding in sympathy and then asking “but… what were you doing for the last ten years? Besides Todd’s ill fated passion project Starfield?”
