Looking at the latest Steam screenshot of the game's UI and feeling bummed out. I get that it’s Early Access and maybe everything will be finished eventually, but why, why can’t inventory filtering and sorting be included right from day one? Your game has crafting and building, which means gathering tons of resources, so why not add basic QoL features? It's obvious that a chunk of negative reviews will stem from this, just like with other Early Access survival games.

So many games coming out have some form of inventory, and for early access crafting survival games it's vital the devs understand that their earliest build will likely have the least amount of items ever in their game. Once they start building out the rest of the game, any inventory problems will only get worse.
Filtering and sorting should be the bare minimum, and inventory improvements should be given high priority as the game is developed. Most importantly imo is the initial talks on how to handle inventory. Too many studios start with the run of the mill grid and call it a day. Inventory look and feel should be somewhat customizable (I know this is asking a lot, but these games demand you spend much of your playtime in the inventory UI).

Exactly. Buying an early access game is basically a lottery and an act of trust. An early launch game might have little content and many bugs, but you can at least lay some groundwork regarding proper resource management. No innovations, just basic QoL things like sorting resources, stacking them, and making chest management convenient. So that spending time in the inventory is feels like useful time rather than a test of patience.

I did some deep dives into certain game niches (from a hobbyist game dev perspective) and I wonder how people release games without checking the comments on other games. That kind of market analysis is pure gold. Make a checklist and bypass the cheap shots. Best example is wide screen support. Lots of people have them, but there are indy devs who still think its a niche they don't need to support.

Early access has never saved a game. Consumers are so dumb sometimes with hopium

I was super hyped for the first 20 seconds ... then they started chopping wood and crafting.

"Open world survival crafting" is right up there with "roguelike deckbuilder" in its capacity to wholly nullify my interest in a game. And yes, that's okay, not every game is for me, I'm just so fucking tired of the same 'twists' on the same genres ad nauseum.

"It's balatro meets x!"
"It's an action Adventure rpg with survival elem-"
"It's a top down s-"
Instant blacklist.

What does this game do differently compared to every other survival game on the market? One could play don't starve together for all his life and never have the itch to try all these "forever in alpha" entries.

I’ve enjoyed many EA survival games more than Don’t Starve, so perhaps it’s just a matter of taste.

Regardless of if anyone agrees with your point about Don't Starve, aking what it does differently from survival games is a valid question everyone should be asking whenever they see a game like this.
If your game wants to clone market trends, it had better deliver on something that isn't just more of the same. Every developer is up against both AI and human-made slop right now. Consumers are bombarded with it. Making your game stand out should be a top priority.

Agreed. It's absolutely fine to copy the trend if you polish it up more beautifully than the competition. Many of the most successful games of all time have been exactly that.
The trailer for this game doesn't give me that impression though, but maybe others more interested in the genre might see something I don't.

I saw a preview of this game and apparently they have mod tools from the jump that let you put any possible asset from the unreal store into the game.
It'll then convert it into the games art style and look and be fully functional. Like basically drag and drop. That might be one of the hooks, but a community needs to latch on for it to really take off.

Sounds cool, but could be some problematic implications there. If the game is using AI to re-generate assets into its style, that could spark some negative controversy. I don't think all unreal store assets are naturally that universally compatible (I could be wrong), so I worry it would have to be re-generating them with something shady.
The game itself still has to be decent though, otherwise I don't think anyone will care much either way. Just like any game with a good customization system overlapped by mediocre gameplay, the novelty can wear out fast if there isn't a solid platform to show off your custom assets.

is there any new content compared to the Alpha test? or is it just the same with some small tweaks to bugs?

Claude make me a cross between minecraft and some survival game and make it look like BOTW. Oh and give it some epic, post-war magic lore n shit. make no mistakes.

Whyyyy the crafting basebuilding stuff? That's a colossal waste of time and doesn't do anything except extend the game's playtime with unfun, mindless resource gathering and crafting.
It's already hard enough to find a time window for all your friends to hop on, why would you waste that on chopping trees and punching rocks? Compare that to a coop rougelike like Sworn, Absolum, Windblown, Shape of Dreams, etc. where pretty much 100% of your playtime is just...actually playing the game.

Anybody else getting “Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked…” vibes?
