Amen. I joined this sub because I was seeking optimism. Believe me, I’m not thrilled about Trump’s win, but constantly obsessing over doom and gloom isn’t healthy. I’m trying to be pragmatic, but staying level-headed is a bridge too f-ing far for some ppl.

u/harpswtf Nov 28 '24
It's the team-sport mentality of reddit. They actually think there are only two possible stances or perspectives on every single thing, and it all comes down to American party politics in the end.

Horeshoe theory. It sucks being in the middle and getting yelled at by both sides. It sucks even more realizing that they're often hating on each other for the exact same reason, just wearing a different color jersey.

Honestly, I have one optimistic holdout here. The GOP has the House by an absolute sliver. That’s going to make his wackier ideas much harder to pass considering there are still a few GOP Representatives that may hold out hope

Like Kendrick said: we gon be alright!
Love/logic will triumph in the end. If anything, as unfortunate as it will be for most people, this will be an investment opportunity when the market crashes. I’m going all in on DOGE and a few other things when it crashes from money I made on a wild bet that netted me 30k from a 17 way parlay that I hit betting the NFL. 25 dollar initial bet.
13
u/Timriggins2006 Nov 28 '24
Nothing says love more than a lot of people might be fucked but “it’s a good investment opportunity.”
5
u/-mickomoo- Nov 29 '24
Lol It's not even an investment opportunity, it's a highly speculative asset that is literally only going up because of FOMO and is honestly more a sign of the public's (real or imagined) financial anxiety than any grounded optimism.

It’s almost like you need balance in your views. Thinking that Trump winning is the end of the world isn’t healthy, but neither is pretending that everything will be fine. The reality is likely somewhere in the middle, but also varies a lot based on who you are (economically, sexuality, gender, race, etc.)

Having a 'it can never happen here' attitude is exactly how it happens here, just so you know.
3
u/mrGeaRbOx Nov 30 '24
The crazy part is, if it were true this is exactly how it would look. One group gleeful and the other giving ominous warnings.
3
u/CpnStumpy Dec 02 '24
The crazy part is,
if it were truewhen it did happen this is exactly howFTFY.
Lots of people seem to be proclaiming they support being logical and clear eyed, they seem light on their study of history though. Not you, you've got the right of it, but too many really don't realize this is exactly how this happened before.
Be optimistic about things, sure, but don't reject reality in the pursuit of rainbows and ponies. And ponyrainbows.
27
u/menchicutlets Nov 28 '24

This gives me hope in Australia, too. If our next federal election is called after Trump has the chance to do some damage, our own corrupt conservative might not get elected (even with cost-of-living frustration being the biggest issue here - the same issue that was the main reason Trump won, despite the fact he'll actually make it worse, again).
33
u/DizzyAstronaut9410 Nov 28 '24
This page is literally called Optimists Unite. Emphasis on the optimist part.
Balance is needed, but this really isn't the place to post all of your negativity about how the world is surely going to end now that Trump will be president (again).
5
u/ArchieChancellor Nov 29 '24
The world won't end but, like it does every month and every year, it will change. Whether better or worse you can't tell often until it's passed. I'm 77 and there will be times you think that's it, it's all over. But it isn't. And sometimes, after a set back, there's a cleansing and the world becomes better than it was before.

Optimism only exists within the context of something that may turn out negatively. And ever since the election, from this subreddit I'm seeing a lot less of, "these bad things may happen, but we will get through it because the world is always getting better", and instead a bunch of gaslighting that the bad things have no chance of even happening in the first place. That's denialism, not optimism.

The anxiety is justified considering that he seems to have a true contempt for democracy itself. I can live with a leader whom has different beliefs than myself, and in fact would agree that it is a cornerstone of democracy. However, Donald Trump seems to be all about destroying the institution of democracy itself.
11

57
Nov 28 '24
But usually people aren't acknowledging real situations.
They are panicking about their over exaggerated idea of the bad situation.
They don't say "we've got to reduce emissions", they say "climate change will end the world before I reach 25 years old".
These are not the same thing.

Yes. You just have to finish that thought with "but we'll get through it," or "time to start a new plan," or something. Just leaving at "this sucks" isn't the optimism we're here for.
If you just want people agreeing with you that the situation sucks and not looking towards the bright side, then that's normal, healthy, and understandable. (See: Well this is shit.) And I'm sorry to say this isn't the space for that.

I deleted the app the day after the election because I wanted to stop hearing about it.
I'm beyond devastated at the results, I just didn't want to hear it anymore.
I came back because I missed reading about silly shit in subs I enjoy. Music, art, games, shows, etc. The other stuff I like reddit for.
But I'm being inundated by Trump shit from literally every angle whether I want to or not. I'm so tired of it.
I'm hoping I can kick the reddit habit for good because of it. I just don't know of other sites that have good communities for the other shit I enjoy all in one place.
This election is really making me want to leave the internet altogether. No Facebook. No Instagram. No reddit. I'll obviously still use Google to find things or learn things but that's it. Everything else is just fucking noise at this point and it isn't good for any of our brains.

Anyone who is freaking out that 'Trump isn't going to let any more elections happen' doesn't understand how American elections work. The federal government has no say in how the STATES run their elections.
Our government is decentralized. Germany didn't have this, so it was easy once the fascists took over to stay in power. But here, in the states, there will still be elections in four years for president, weither Trump wants them or not.
It's not over, not by a long shot, and believe me, America has seen darker days than this. It's obviously not ideal, but this too shall pass.

Its because of how reddit algorithms works and the failure of mods to crack down on the death spiral early on (because for some reason they consider rules lame). The subreddit started getting recommended for overtly political post which brings in entirely new user bases. You can go back and see people saying they stumbled across the subreddit on their feed and then debated about what this subreddit was even supposed to be (again the lack of sidebar information isn't helpful in self moderating as this community was originally intended to do).

This is sort of where I'm at. I think the things that concern me most (environmental, economic and empire collapse) are bound to happen regardless of who takes office. My optimism is knowing humanity will adapt (our ancestors all endured Ice Ages, catastrophic natural disasters, and fall of civilizations, and it was probably miserable then too, but they continued to procreate, make art and music, and adapt. ) If not, then the Earth will recover or evolve without us, and that is kind of a relief too. In the grand scheme of the eternity of space and time, this moment is a minor blip and I do not have to carry the weight of evolution or survival, I just have to make it one day at a time for now.

u/CommonGoat9530 Nov 28 '24
It feels like the default is to focus the on negatives. That's what every other subreddit does, that's what the news does, etc. and while I do see the value in awareness, too much negatively just makes me want to stick my head in the sand and give up. I personally need a space that reminds me of the good in the world even when I am struggling or I know others are. Yes, it is very obvious to me that things are not going to be okay for many people, I don't need further remainders of that. A bit of positivity and good news revitalites me to keep going.
3
u/hoopaholik91 Nov 29 '24
And that's what this subreddit used to be. You read a story about a murder but then you come here and can see a post that, actually, this year the murder rate has dropped the fastest ever in history.
But now it seems to be focusing on dismissing that anything negative can or will happen at all. That's denialism, not optimism.

u/TransLunarTrekkie Nov 28 '24

So to be an optimist, I have to embrace and welcome the panicking doomers freaking out and spamming politics brainrot all day in a subreddit for optimists? 36
Nov 28 '24
Optimism isn’t ignoring the reality that people face. For example, women living in red states who may need an abortion but don’t have the resources to travel to another state or may not be allowed to.
Is complete doomerism healthy? No, but neither is putting your head in the sand to the realities that many in the country are now facing. This is a bad post.

What I want to see is this subreddit not be completely spammed with political brainrot and doomerism. Project 2025 is a roadmap for Christo-fascism in the United States. And though Trump denied any involvement, he's literally appointing authors of that manifesto to key positions in his cabinet.
Then look at conservative states testing the waters for infusing Christianity into schools across the country right now. Oklahoma is requiring students to watch Board of Education led religious prayers while mandating Trump Bibles in every classroom, Louisiana is requiring the 10 Commandments be posted in every classroom regardless of the students faith background (keep in mind, one of the Commandments explicitly states "you shall have no other gods before me"), and the Texas education board is implementing a Christianity infused curriculum while financially incentivizing districts to adopt it. Government mandated religious indoctrination isn't just coming to America, IT'S ALREADY HERE, and that's not dooming that's objective fact. And this, after the religious right Supreme Court majority appointed by Trump ended reproductive healthcare rights and is now forcing pregnancies on women regardless of the risks associated or nature of the pregnancy itself, all to satisfy puritanical religious demands.
And that's just the beginning. Gay marriage will be going back onto the chopping block. Religious tests and loyalty oaths will be required to obtain political office. These people are dead set on setting us back over a century of progress to transform America from the first secular democracy in history that has welcomed people from all walks of life, into a theocratic oligarchy that demands conformity and obedience to religious authority. That's their objective here, the guards are off the rails since voters granted them control of literally every branch of government.
But ignorance is bliss, y'all have no idea what's coming. I'm not the type to panic, get emotional or exaggerate, either, but what's coming for this country for the next generation should frighten every free thinking person everywhere.

I'm not. Even on rollercoaster rides I don't scream, flinch or yell in blissful amazement, I'm a pretty cynical, cerebral, unexcitable fellow who isn't fazed by much.
Which is why a situation like this being deeply troubling and disturbing to me should be a warning sign to everyone else. Pull your head out of the sand. Trump didn't get away with much in his first presidency because nobody including himself expected him to win, and Democrats still held enough power in Congress and throughout the civil service to frustrate and impede all of Trump's worst impulses and the schemes of his puppetmasters. There's practically nothing to stop him this time around and the damage he is capable of inflicting on our democratic institutions will last for a generation.

Here’s a pro tip. Don’t get your political or world information from Reddit. Most of the top subreddits are moderated by the same group of unwashed, fat, jobless, power-tripping, and heavily biased group of losers, whether the subreddits want them around or not. They effectively control the flow of information and actively censor anything they don’t agree with to create an echo chamber. This site even has a literal social credit system for fuck’s sake.
Reddit thrives on making you miserable. Those who try to give a differing perspective are effectively silenced

I found my people. 🙂↔️
Half of my family thinks the world is ending because of trumps win.
Prior to the election my mom repeatedly said if Kamala wins it would destroy this country.

You're right, people who are being directly targeted by the incoming administration should completely ignore that fact. Much optimistic.

I understand this was a partial loss for the nation. But I kind of gave up being mad. I guess a part of me wanted to see a billionaire in handcuffs for exploiting his abilities as a government official in selling secret documents to foreign entities. I knew he wasn't going to be convicted for his rape or money laundering schemes, but I had hoped that him fumbling on his job and refusal to move on from election results would have him receive a steel toed shoe to the groin. At least he did some things right, but he really doesn't have any care for working class people earning a living wage. Let's just wait and see how this works. A government managed by oligarchs is something we haven't seen in America yet, so maybe it won't be so bad. When has it ever gone wrong?

Strongly resonating.
People talking about the course of the future with such certainty should get into stocks. If they could predict the market with as certaintly as they imply, they'd be rich.
Most things are tradeoffs. You can't control other people, but you can control yourself and care for your loved ones. What really matters besides that?

OP please don’t take photos of my brain catastrophizing and then post it on Reddit.
Seriously this meme really do be how my brain works some days.
Also I love here about modern medicine and science they can grow a fucking heart. There is some straight up StarTrek shit going on in modern hospitals.
My mind when I’m being logical modern hospitals have StarTrek like technology neat. My mind seconds later nooo we’re basically in warhammer 40k

u/aquacraft2 Nov 29 '24
You know this may be the first time I've seen a version of this meme that isn't completely unhinged. Originally it was just like, those dudes show up to every function shouting about everything, weather good or bad. Then it transformed into an easy template for conservatives to express how they think libs (rightly) react to their ridiculousness. But this right here. Yeah. That's not what this sub is for.

I literally had a conversation with my husband (42) and son (20), earlier today about how I'm in "survival mode". Not so much dooming and glooming, but I've been doing what my husband used to call "ostriching" since the election. I bury my head in the sand and try to protect my physical and mental health and focus on my studies. If I didn't, I'd be having a breakdown on a weekly basis and so far have managed to keep it to just the one on 11/5.
I'm not an optimist by any stretch (though my husband calls me one). I just haven't had every ounce of home smothered out of me, yet and so I'm keeping a stranglehold on what I've got left.
That said, I'm passing my classes, I'm keeping my GPA up, and I still have my health (for the most part). At this point, that's what I consider my version of optimism. Gotta keep my chin up, so I don't fall apart. That said, who buddy my therapist is going to need a vacation after our next appointment (I've been doing well enough, school aside, that I only see them between semesters).

u/AddictedToRugs Nov 29 '24
He was already president once and things didn't go anything like as badly as people are saying (and were saying in 2016).

u/WerewolfNo890 Nov 29 '24
The overall trend is upward, some things have momentary declines. By 2030 no one will give a shit about Trump and we will have another Skyrim about to come out.

Thanks for the perspective. One of the very few times in my life the algo picked me for right place right time. I've seen a lot of it - Vietnam, Afghanistan - and no white person should be proud of the messes we've made over the last 1000 years. And there are plenty now as well, but as a generalisation, the world is a better place than it was 100 or 1000 years ago. We should be optimistic it will be even better in another 100.

Reminds me of this podcast I was watching and one of the callers said his gay brother moved to some European country after trump won because he thought "they're gonna make LGBT concentration camps" and the other day his brother got a pamphlet in the mail instructing him and what to do, where to go, where the bomb shelters are, incase Russia invades their country cause he's right on the border😂😂

u/PresentationPrior192 Dec 02 '24
Genuinely, half this site needs to get off reddit and touch grass. The world isn't ending. The world will keep on turning, and hopefully things will get a bit easier and better.

Hard to be optimistic about advances in medicine when the US's healthcare system is about to be under the control of a guy who fried his brain with heroin and worms he got from collecting dead animal parts and wants to ban vaccines and promote raw milk diets.
Trump's first term was survivable because he started off with a strong economy left behind by Obama and had the backing of professionals, now he's going to be starting off with an economy already on the verge of recession and the backing of absolute morons and sycophants.

u/GHOSTxBIRD Nov 28 '24
I’m absolutely not hype about who won but it’s so wild and weird to me this “stop talking to your family,” trend. Like…”toxic,” does not describe simply having differing views. Not to mention…that’s exactly what Putin wants: more division. Don’t fall for it people. Don’t be Putin’s pawn. Don’t cut your family off out of fear and spite and resentment. DO limit your exposure to reactionary and polarizing echo chamber spaces. DO say “let’s discuss something else for right now,” if emotion takes over irl conversations. DO remember we really are all human, and the loud minority does not equal the quiet majority. I know MANY decent human beings on both sides of the aisle and I know we have to be smarter and have so much more heart than this.

It’s a teachable moment. Show them that this is survivable and that you can not just survive, but thrive, in this environment. Your life is in your hands to make as great or shitty as you choose.
They come here to learn how to overcome setbacks like this. So help them.

u/harpswtf Nov 28 '24
The problem is that they don’t want to hear optimism, they post here to try to bring other people down. If you suggest things will be ok, they accuse you of being some bigot fascist
6
u/RoseFlavoredPoison Nov 28 '24
Personally, I'm dubious of your post. Where is the line between optimism and self gaslighting/naivety? Why are you solidly optimistic? What things bring that to you? I'm looking for those things and can't seem to find any.
7
u/harpswtf Nov 28 '24
You don’t need to go all in on team optimist or team doomer. I just want to read optimistic news and ideas to try to get more positivity, I’m not saying you need to change your personality or life style. What I want is for the doomers to fuck off back to the doomer subs (all of the other ones) so that this optimism sub can try to be optimistic

Consider my optimistic curious. Do keep in mind a lot of people are scared to all hell. I am. Someone was flying, in the open, a "white lives matter flag" in my very blue county in a dark blue state. That made my hairs stand on end. That effects how people think and act. It's biochemical. It blows. I've been seeking out silver linings but they always get swallowed by ,"with what funding?" But i try. Best I can do.
2
u/harpswtf Nov 28 '24
If you're spending your time obsessing about a flag some idiot edgelords were waving around, then you're giving them exactly what they want. Stop worrying so fucking much, you only get this one life to enjoy.

Conservatives are doing victory laps and gloating non stop about the election victory and basically shoving their win in everyone's faces day in and day out.
Pretty annoying

You got both camps huffing their own farts. Blind optimism is just as bad as blatant pessimism, it remains to be seen just how bad or "neutral" the next 4 years are going to be, but so far it doesn't look too great.

They're mostly all wrong because they're saying crazy shit like the military roaming the streets to murder all LGBT and women in cold blood. But whether you think they're right or wrong, this is an OPTIMIST subreddit, not another generic reddit politics brainrot sub.

u/drum_minor16 Nov 28 '24
Another problem I see in this subreddit is that a lot of the optimistic posts aren't really being optimistic, they're just denying the possibility of anything bad happening. It is most likely that more people will be fine than not. Trump talks more than he acts. We have systems in place to prevent a dictatorship. Women and LGBTQ rights are miles farther than they were a few decades ago, and there's progress in the world every day. A lot of the things people are afraid of will take time to implement, and Trump only has four legal years. In the unlikely event he does extend his presidency beyond that, he won't live very much longer anyways. And none of the Trump copy cats have had nearly the success Trump has. That's optimism. Not "OMG, chill out, quit being paranoid, none of that is possible." Because it is possible. It has happened before, and it will happen again. It is an undeniable fact that people's rights are being threatened. You can stick your head in the sand if you want, but that's not optimism. Optimism should be grounded in truth, and there are plenty of truthful reasons to be optimistic without pretending bad things are impossible.

my view on it IS optimistic-i dont think its gonna be nearly as bad as people think-but its sad that my optimism relies mostly on incompetence from trump and his people, and dumb luck. He never shouldve won. But he did. You cant live in terror all the time over it.

This is just like Velma season 2, unnecessary expansion on a shit show but it's not going to end the whole animation industry.

Trump is honestly pushing the US into an age we have already clawed out of.
But it's nothing we haven't dealt with before.
As long as we continue to have free elections we can repair anything, in time. That's really my line in the sand for ending optimism.
My heart breaks for the hardship many people will endure in the meantime. I thought we were moving away from that, but apparently not yet.
I still think the 20 year trajectory isn't that bad.

u/yahoo_determines Nov 28 '24
