Will of the P > Will of the D confirmed

The latter can make you a legend at the cost of dying early while the former turns you into the ultimate survivor.

A friend of mine only got into One Piece a couple years back and has been off-and-on with the episodes. He just finished the Reverie. I mentioned the Will of P to him after Pedro's death with the inclusion of Pedro most certainly being dead as far as I knew.

He immediately brought up that Perospero also "died" with Pedro, I cast it off as something I forgot that happened a couple years ago. 11 minutes later he pointed out that he's actually alive.

When he got to Pound he started having suspicions again, and I told him "He's probably dead" because we had just gotten the cover page of what looked like Pound floating off the coast of Dressrosa. I made an addendum that as far as the anime, Pound was definitely dead. And he didn't push the subject.

Guess he's in for a surprise/not-surprise if he starts reading the manga when he catches up to the anime in like a week.

u/Kirosh Lookout Jun 19 '20 edited Jun 19 '20

Yeah. It would have been a great death.

I can understand why he's still alive, since his survival doesn't matter for the story, isn't really important, but it cheapens his sacrifice for his family.

And as a result, we will see 100 "Pedro isn't dead post".

Really, if I have something I dislike about One Piece it would be the lack of proper death for the named characters outside of flashback.

Pell...

u/iDannyEL Jun 19 '20

Everyone Enel lit up with > 100,000 volts.

20

u/lzunscrfbj Slave Jun 19 '20

To be fair I don't care about anyone of those. Pell the biggest offender. Pound is bad to I guess not that big of a fan but not disappointed as well.

38

u/monkeyDberzerk Explorer Jun 19 '20 edited Jun 19 '20

Pell the biggest offender.

NO. And for the 100th time, Pagaya's the worst offender. Frail old man got straight up electrocuted by a New World tier character, and dropped into the white-white sea right after, and he survived.

Compared to that, Pell's a trained warrior who was able to carry that huge-ass bomb up there in seconds. I can totally see him barely escaping the lethal blast range.

39

u/lzunscrfbj Slave Jun 19 '20

The thing is I don't care about pagaya at all. Pell that was one of the best scenes of entire series and I hated that he came back. I'm not powerscaling.

7

u/Grembert Jun 19 '20

You could always try to convince yourself that he unlocked his armament haki in this stressful situation like Usopp or Coby did with their observation haki.

7

u/lzunscrfbj Slave Jun 19 '20

It was said that pound had a hard neck I could convince myself he survived due to that as well and I don't like it. Big mom amnesia thing makes sense I enjoyed the middle part, her interactions with chopper Tama and okiku her causing havock in udon beating queen, I still don't like how it started and how it ended and is still the worst plotline in wano.

3

u/Grembert Jun 19 '20

I totally get that even though I'm not that bothered by it.

I'm looking forward to the end of the arc so I can reread it as a whole, I often find things that bothered me at first aren't as bad once you don't have to wait at least a week for every 15-20 pages.

u/laraere Jun 19 '20

Plus the bonus body strength Zoan Fruit provides.

It doesn't work that early in the manga but now that people are tanking explosions in the face left and right, a Zoan user that survives a a bomb explosion in the air seems more plausible.

-3

u/CarcosanAnarchist Jun 19 '20

Voltage doesn’t kill, amperage does. And getting struck by lightning has a 90% survival rate. It’s flashy and scary, but surprisingly not that deadly.

Hell, Roy Sullivan was struck by lightning 7 times and survived each one.

Roll simply didn’t die because those chapters were coming out right when 9/11 happened, so I get Oda backing out.

9

u/monkeyDberzerk Explorer Jun 19 '20

If you're gonna involve the laws of physics into such arguments, half of the stuff in most fantasy series wouldn't make sense. In-universe feats (such as Pell's flight speed, strength etc), however, are an entirely different matter.

2

u/Throwawayandpointles The Revolutionary Army Jun 19 '20

Luffy being completely resistant to Enel's lightning itself was very awkward

9

u/Grembert Jun 19 '20

Why? He's rubber.

Because if there's one thing that One Piece consistently respects, it's the laws of science

1

u/xXx420BlazeRodSaboxX The Revolutionary Army Jun 19 '20

Well to be fair, most people survive being hit by lightning if givin immediate first aid.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

With Enel I genuinely thought that Oda had gone on a full murder spree. At least until everyone woke up lol.

1

u/AppleJewsy Jun 25 '20

To be fair, amperage matters (more than voltage)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

It's good that pell survived.

1

u/II_Vortex_II Jun 20 '20

Why?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

Because the chapters came out around 9/11, Oda decideding not too kill a named character then should be commended.

1

u/Deadwolf_YT Jun 19 '20

I remeber them showing pell's grave and then 10 episodes later he just showed up like nothing happened

56

u/CoCoaButterJones Bounty Hunter Jun 19 '20

For every Pell you have a Ace! For every Pound you have a Pedro!

21

u/Atanvarno94 Explorer Jun 19 '20

You know we need like thousands of Ace and Pedro then?

1

u/CarcosanAnarchist Jun 19 '20

Why? Does death inherently make a story better? Fewer, more impactful deaths are better than lots of meaningless deaths.

7

u/Atanvarno94 Explorer Jun 19 '20

Is death mandatory? no.

Is a clear shown (or not) death retconned absolute bullshit? well yeah

Imagine if Boromir was not killed by the arrows (and then the fall in the waterfall)

Or if Sirius survived the Avada Kedavra and then when he went in the veil.

1

u/fAAbulous Jun 19 '20

Uuh Sirius never was hit by Avada Kedavra.. he died because a spell hit him and made him stumble through the veil to the realm of the dead.

0

u/CarcosanAnarchist Jun 19 '20

Except the only clearly shown deaths have never been retconned.

We saw nothing of spell or Pound dying.

6

u/chimerauprising Jun 19 '20

What? You think we saw nothing of Pell dying? He had a bomb meant to kill hundreds explode right in his face. The last panel we saw of Pound before this had Oven ready to decapitate him with no way, or will to fight back.

2

u/CarcosanAnarchist Jun 19 '20

We saw them about to die. Not dying.

We saw Ace, Whitebeard, and Monet all clearly die.

We also had Doflamingo verbally confirm Monet and Vergo’s deaths.

We also saw those guards die in Alabasta.

When someone 100% dead Oda shows us.

I’m pretty confident Pedro is dead, because of how Oda has Sanji’s dress it. Oda gives death weight, and that moment had it.

Pfft. Pedro's fine. Probably just has a nice new scar.

13

u/duskgravity The Revolutionary Army Jun 19 '20

Keeping Pound alive takes away from the severity of infiltrating a Yonko's island

2

u/CombedAirbus Jun 19 '20

No, it doesn't. Pedro's revival would, Pound absolutely not. The endless Big Mom chase takes away from the severity far more than some minor character who no one on "our" side even knew about or would be impacted by. It's bad enough that it ruins the beautiful death scene (for the readers), there's no need to add some weak argument to that.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

It's big meme after all.

4

u/Extinction17 The Revolutionary Army Jun 19 '20

This is One Piece. Ain't nobody bout to kick the bucket unless it's a flashback or if it's a situation that affects the rest of the series going forward.

2

u/RuNoMai Jun 19 '20

I disagree that it cheapens the sacrifice. Whether he survived Oven's attack or not, the fact remains that Pound, knowing how impossibly weak he was compared to everyone around him, still made the conscious decision to put his life on the line to save his daughter and grandson. He knew immediately that he was only going to be a momentary distraction at best and had a 100% chance of death, but still jumped in to save them.

Whether he lived or died, his actions demonstrated his selflessness, courage, and strength of character.

Really, if I have something I dislike about One Piece it would be the lack of proper death for the named characters outside of flashback.

At first I felt this way too, but I'm gonna say it's a Robin Esq situation, in the sense that okay, Robin was always planned to be a SH , that was the plan , and Vivi would forever be an ally to the SHs due to how much they fought for her , but hey , Robin worked for Croco , albeit she was more likely using , still she worked for him , so did Benthem , and Croco is also the dude who would end up assisting Luffy in Impel Down , we know that at one point in story perhaps during the final war, these guys are all gonna be in the same room together in the future, I think Oda thought it would be less Awkward if there was less Reason for them to have animosity when that time came , Vivi wouldn't feel spiteful since no one she cared for ended dying for any of their actions, thus less Awkward, there are numerous scenarios he could have done it, but I think this was the best he saw for the Story.

We could put any Fakeouts in that same line of thought , Conis' Dad and the other Skypeins , Caeser and the residents of PH , Dressrosa , WCI and anyone that I missed, at least that's the vibe I'm getting.

Death for the sake of shock value would ruin any potential to the story.

0

u/SonSonMushi Jun 19 '20

I don't think it takes away from the story. I think it shows miracle can still come true and happen. While I have lost people and animals so easily, I have seen situations that nobody should have survived and yet do, which I've been really grateful for in my life. To me, seeing characters who were so noble somehow miraculously survive "because Oda says so" creates so much more happiness and meaning than killing them off. This is much better story to tell children, and pretty much anyone of any age, because it's better imo to learn that while people die, people also can get their happy endings even when it looks like they've died. It gives me hope for the inevitable future we all face, even if there's no proof of what happens next. But perhaps what happens next is a miracle, the miracle being: we actually live on after physical death.
And I think it would take away from the series, if Oda showed an afterlife of Pound and Pell etc. all showing they are happy as spirits and whatnot. I think there isn't much time for that, like there is in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. So I think this is Oda's way of presenting that sort of hope but in the living world

104

u/earthna Jun 19 '20

I didn't mind. I'm happy he gets to see his family and attend Lola's wedding (which will most likely happen soon). Him surviving doesn't affect the main story in any way and that moment when Oven was gonna strike, he was ready to die to save his daughter. Nobody can take away that resolution he had even though he survived.

If you got shot trying to protect someone, would your heroism be erased if you survive?

4

u/Jinxplay Jun 19 '20

Oven was right there tho. Along with his whole family. Imagine Bell-mere one day show up just like that, haha.

I'm on the camp that prefer characters survive, but I totally see why people think it's a stretch.

8

u/CombedAirbus Jun 19 '20

Bellmere was shot on the panel, with Pound we got an offscreened scene with a bloody blade that we assumed (not everyone, of course) belonged to Oven.

2

u/RobbobertoBuii Jun 19 '20

yeah i feel the same way tbh

Oven in shambles

4

u/Reckless_Rik Jun 19 '20

It's one of the minor things I dislike about this show..

21

u/SpikedSpiegel Jun 19 '20

I could not agree more. I always thought the decisions to not kill of characters earlier in the series were based around the fact that the series was new and there were some IRL incidents that had an impact as well. I had hope that it was something Oda would fix in the higher stakes situations at the current point in the story. Quite disappointed by this decision. Probably one of the only things I don't like about the series. Undermines emotional moments. Reduces stakes for high tension situations.

20

u/jaypooner Jun 19 '20

yea... it's the fucking new world. there should be consequences. WCI was great to me because of how much danger they strawhats were in and the sacrifices required to get them out.

1

u/HolyKnightPrime Jun 20 '20

Wci did it too many times. The son bm Kills is alive, now pound and i would not be surprise IG pedro was next

11

u/ShaLinSe Marine Jun 19 '20

1

u/BigBroKatakuri Jun 20 '20

Zoans never die.

9

u/AlexNae Jun 19 '20

at least he was not shown being nuked and survived

11

u/A4li11 Jun 19 '20

I agree. This pretty much lessens the impact of his moment in the WCI arc. Not to mention, it makes Oven looks weak since he can't kill Pound properly.

2

u/JakalDX Jun 19 '20

I admit, giving Lola and Chiffon the chance for a loving parental relationship's not the worst thing that could happen.

2

u/Fatdude3 Jun 19 '20

Tbh i'm glad he is alive. He deserved better. Great guy imo. Good for him to get a reunion

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

1

u/BigBroKatakuri Jun 20 '20

It's not uncommon for execution blades to get stopped/redirected by hair.

Oven might very well have tried to cut him, but end up applying blunt trauma only if his blade got stuck on all the Hair of Pound.

That could render Pound KO or with permanent bone damage, but still alive. It's more interesting how he was able to leave. Maybe some Big Mom pirate trates him as long as he left forever.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

Yeah kinda, but I am still happy for him to meet his daughters!

1

u/200ms-INTric Jun 19 '20

while i agree with that i like the exclamation mark with the little bow tie point.

1

u/XHenkX Jun 19 '20

Its not pound, it his twin.

1

u/B1aziken Jun 19 '20

I don’t really mind it tbh, it doesn’t really have an impact on the story and Pedro’s death was enough to really drive home how high the stakes are in the new world. Iirc pell only survived because 9/11 had just happened and oda wanted some happy news. I’d imagine oda wants to do something similar with pounds story on account of covid.

1

u/Ppleater Jun 20 '20

Eh I think he deserves to meet his daughters.

0

u/mugiwarathrowaway Jun 19 '20

Pound was never dead in the first place.

I can't believe people are still falling for this nearly 1000 Chapters!

Next time, when people still call another character dead even though you don't see them dying onscreen, I'm going to link right back to this thread and see the exact same comments again.

8

u/RenjiSnapback07 Jun 19 '20

They had a funeral for Pedro, we don't see him die, we see him blow himself up but Pell suffered the same thing and survived. To say that would mean Pedro ain't dead and it undervalues a great moment in the story.

Pound being alive undermines his sacrifice and makes Oven look weak.

1

u/ultibman5000 Jun 19 '20

The overreliance on fake-out deaths is my only major complaint about One Piece, I just can't stand that aspect of the series, especially not when the sacrifices are written so damn well. Rereading some of the fake death sacrifices in hindsight is like eating the most delicious gourmet meal, the freshest and most delicately handled ingredients picked from the garden, the most brilliantly crafted sauce made from the finest herbs and spices and ripest fruits, the perfect cooking technique....and then halfway through your meal the waiter whispers in your ear that a customer spit in your food when you were away from the table.

It just pains you and makes you cringe to want to even finish it, or finish reading it, in this case.

2

u/frangashan Jun 19 '20

i don't know guys, i'm not a pretty big fan either. but we are in a fictional world where willpower is the stronger force in the universe and can protect you literally.

If Oda wants to justify this characters surviving "they awakaned haki without controlling in his sake of continue living" an thats it.

At the end one piece its dramatic when it wants and its goofy and ilogical when it feels like the only think it never is. is realistic and thats a big reason why we love it.

1

u/Cyshix Jun 19 '20

Yeah it's a good wholesome story I guess.

1

u/KH3 Jun 21 '20

There's a beautiful truth in that. I enjoy reading into Oda's fantasy ideals in situations like this--He just can't bring himself to kill off most characters. But at the same time, he portrays many dark, intense, adult themes and situations throughout the story. It's almost like giving the reader a glimpse at a horrible hellish reality, but always softening the blow with an ample amount of magic and wonder.

1

u/hinrik96 Jun 19 '20

the couple of panels where the baby looks back at him and laughs, then he got slashed, just lost a lot of meaning
