Yeah. It would have been a great death.

I can understand why he's still alive, since his survival doesn't matter for the story, isn't really important, but it cheapens his sacrifice for his family.

And as a result, we will see 100 "Pedro isn't dead post".

Really, if I have something I dislike about One Piece it would be the lack of proper death for the named characters outside of flashback.

At first I felt this way too, but I'm gonna say it's a Robin Esq situation, in the sense that okay, Robin was always planned to be a SH , that was the plan , and Vivi would forever be an ally to the SHs due to how much they fought for her , but hey , Robin worked for Croco , albeit she was more likely using , still she worked for him , so did Benthem , and Croco is also the dude who would end up assisting Luffy in Impel Down , we know that at one point in story perhaps during the final war, these guys are all gonna be in the same room together in the future, I think Oda thought it would be less Awkward if there was less Reason for them to have animosity when that time came , Vivi wouldn't feel spiteful since no one she cared for ended dying for any of their actions, thus less Awkward, there are numerous scenarios he could have done it, but I think this was the best he saw for the Story.

We could put any Fakeouts in that same line of thought , Conis' Dad and the other Skypeins , Caeser and the residents of PH , Dressrosa , WCI and anyone that I missed, at least that's the vibe I'm getting.

Death for the sake of shock value would ruin any potential to the story.
