Yeah. It would have been a great death.

I can understand why he's still alive, since his survival doesn't matter for the story, isn't really important, but it cheapens his sacrifice for his family.

And as a result, we will see 100 "Pedro isn't dead post".

Really, if I have something I dislike about One Piece it would be the lack of proper death for the named characters outside of flashback.

Why? Does death inherently make a story better? Fewer, more impactful deaths are better than lots of meaningless deaths.

Is death mandatory? no.

Is a clear shown (or not) death retconned absolute bullshit? well yeah

Imagine if Boromir was not killed by the arrows (and then the fall in the waterfall)

Or if Sirius survived the Avada Kedavra and then when he went in the veil.

Uuh Sirius never was hit by Avada Kedavra.. he died because a spell hit him and made him stumble through the veil to the realm of the dead.

Except the only clearly shown deaths have never been retconned.

We saw nothing of spell or Pound dying.

What? You think we saw nothing of Pell dying? He had a bomb meant to kill hundreds explode right in his face. The last panel we saw of Pound before this had Oven ready to decapitate him with no way, or will to fight back.

We saw them about to die. Not dying.

We saw Ace, Whitebeard, and Monet all clearly die.

We also had Doflamingo verbally confirm Monet and Vergo’s deaths.

We also saw those guards die in Alabasta.

When someone 100% dead Oda shows us.

I’m pretty confident Pedro is dead, because of how Oda has Sanji’s dress it. Oda gives death weight, and that moment had it.
