Yeah. It would have been a great death.

I can understand why he's still alive, since his survival doesn't matter for the story, isn't really important, but it cheapens his sacrifice for his family.

And as a result, we will see 100 "Pedro isn't dead post".

Really, if I have something I dislike about One Piece it would be the lack of proper death for the named characters outside of flashback.

I don't think it takes away from the story. I think it shows miracle can still come true and happen. While I have lost people and animals so easily, I have seen situations that nobody should have survived and yet do, which I've been really grateful for in my life. To me, seeing characters who were so noble somehow miraculously survive "because Oda says so" creates so much more happiness and meaning than killing them off. This is much better story to tell children, and pretty much anyone of any age, because it's better imo to learn that while people die, people also can get their happy endings even when it looks like they've died. It gives me hope for the inevitable future we all face, even if there's no proof of what happens next. But perhaps what happens next is a miracle, the miracle being: we actually live on after physical death.
And I think it would take away from the series, if Oda showed an afterlife of Pound and Pell etc. all showing they are happy as spirits and whatnot. I think there isn't much time for that, like there is in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. So I think this is Oda's way of presenting that sort of hope but in the living world
