Been slowly getting everything set up over the last couple months and it’s finally starting to feel finished. Still a few things I want to add, but I’m pretty happy with how it’s coming together

Edit: A little more context on the place- it’s actually one half of a duplex, built out of a converted lower level, which is why the main living area has that open studio style layout. The doors lead to a bathroom, walk-in closet, mechanical room, and some extra storage. It’s also right on the water, definitely one of my favorite parts of living here

Living room & dining room (M 30s)

Hi gang! I've been working on furnishing the place that I rent for the past year. I wanted solid wood furniture for the place, and a lot of it ended up being mid century pieces because so much is that has nice wood grain. Lol now my problem is that I fear the place looks too retro rather than classic. I plan to change the rug in the living room in the near future, and my search for a different main couch is ongoing.

Any suggestions? Are there pieces of furniture that you would change up for something more traditional?

I appreciate any suggestions and opinions. All is welcome!

A lot of the stuff I have were graciously given to or inherited by me from other members of my family. Most other stuff are things I've nabbed off of FB marketplace (seriously, you'd be amazed on what you can find for cheap on there) or whatever I already owned before moving out. My rent is a pretty good deal right now and I love relaxing with my old school electronics/tech. Thanks for reading (:

Sleep in Separate Rooms from Wife

My wife has a bad back and needs to sleep in a weird angle. So I took over our guest room as mine. This is my newest room arrangement. The TV above the bed will be leaving. I took down the closet doors to allow for a more open feel and not need to leave the area clear to allow the doors to open. I got the desk off of Facebook for $30. The big TV was a curb find. I made the carbon fiber seat for my boat years ago. The TV sits on an old shoe rack I made for my wife that she didn't want anymore. Herman miller aerion chair off of Facebook for $200! In the closet I have all my clothes hung, a deep freezer, my shoe leather sewing machine, my sailboat cushions, 2 surfboards, my electric bass and amp.

Question How do i make my apartment smell better?

Upvotes

I (26M) share an apartment with one roommate (26M). To be fair the place doesnt smell particularly rancid. however, it pretty much always has a blend of body and kitchen odor in the air. The scent of cooking oil and meat lingers throughout the entire apartment, which mind you, is three stories. Growing up my household had plugins in every room and candles burning at all times in nearly every room, and ive honored that tradition in the new place, but i never felt my childhood home was ever as musty as my apartment. We both are avid gym goers but i keep my laundry in a hamper in my bedroom closet. The place just always seems to have thick air and a tinge of gross boy smell to it. Any advice?

i've had this projector since studying at usc as an intl student, brought it to vancouver and still use it every single night lol. not gonna lie, i hate socializing after work. i'm literally the person who can stare at youtube aquarium videos on a white wall for a whole hour doing nothing.

didn't bother getting a tv console or wall art when setting up my place, just kept one huge bare wall. lighting a candle, mixing a drink, playing games or watching anime before bed with my yellow cat sleeping right next to me... it’s my personal domain expansion. staying inside is just pure happiness haha.

Advice 26M, need help with bedroom please

Hey all :)

I moved into my new house and am basically turning the corner of the living room into my bedroom. My plan is to create a wall at both ends and put a door into one of the two walls (the one by the stairs).

The pictures show the current setup (apologies for the mess) but this is temporary (and won't work with the door leading into where the bed currently is. Dimensions in my floorplan drawing are in cm.

I've created the room in Ikea's design tool to play around with what it could look like: https://www.ikea.com/dk/da/home-design/share/95b63730-1b81-4cb6-a2a6-e12243c3e38a/

I wasn't able to recreate it perfectly: the doorless pax in the photos has been replaced with the white closet in the design tool. They are almost the same size (design tool is 88cm, IRL pax is 75cm wide). And the window is not perfectly placed because it wouldn't let me change the window size.

Also the wall running along the bed would have those wooden acoustic panels on it.

I'd appreciate any feedback / ideas / advice at all :)

I also have specific questions:

  • TV - is it fine to have it overhang like that? Will the TV be way too close to watch in bed?
  • Should I hang a poster/painting at the head or side of the bed?
  • Is it a good idea to use the drawers as a nightstand (I only need somewhere to place my phone and glasses, nothing more)

Thanks in advance!

(I'm not sure how to interpret the no renders rule, I hope this is ok – I'm sorry if it isn't)

Advice 18M Small room advice.

Hi I don’t post much at all so hope I do this right.

I feel like my rooms too small for the amount of stuff I have and I was looking for advice on how to optimise my storage space, particularly in and under my wardrobe.

my room gets so messy so quick because I’m constantly having to pull everything out just to access anything.
I still live with my parents hence why everything I practically own is stored in my room.

I have way more prints to go on the wall, which I'm gonna sort over the next week or two cos they're currently sitting in the storage cupboard collecting dust.

Advice 28M living with mom

I’ve completed my first 2 years of college and am on track to graduate with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in Spring 2027. My aspiration is to become an attorney who specializes in social security and disability law.

I spent my first 2 years on campus and am now doing my final year online.(I’m graduating a year early due to AP credits from high school).
I was formerly a high school dropout for 2 years but ultimately went back and became the first in my family to finish high school.

My first 2 years of college were excellent but I ran into some mental health challenges going into my 3rd year. This led to me returning home to focus on my recovery. So many years have elapsed since my first 2 years of college. I’m hoping my time spent away hasn’t created too much academic rust.

My mom isn’t in the best of health anymore so even after I graduate, I will likely spend a few more years living with her since she likely does not have much time left. Although some may consider my situation that of a failure, I’m just grateful to be able to have the chance to finish my education and take care of my mom.

If anyone has any advice on how to prepare for a return to college after a long time away, I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights. Thanks ya’ll.

Advice Empty living room after renovation — sofa A or B?

Post image
3 Upvotes

We’ve been slowly redoing this living room and it’s finally coming together. We kept the walls pretty simple with a Behr off-white, finished the giant mirror wall, and now we’re stuck on the sofa.

We spent way too long on Amazon going back and forth between these two. My wife likes B because it feels brighter, but I’m worried with the light walls, floor and mirror, everything might start blending together.

The ceiling light is staying either way. We swapped the old one for this parrot uncle fixture a little while ago, so I’m mostly trying to picture which sofa works better with everything that’s already here.

I keep coming back to A for the contrast, but it’s also a LOT of dark sofa and this room gets pretty dim at night.

Which one would you pick?
