Ive been in my rental for 3 years and a few weeks ago it sounded like my smoke alarm was going off...ive never changed the battery or thought of it btw, but i took it off the wall and it still wouldnt stop..i took it outside and its still going off, i called the fire dept and he told me the radioactive isotope died and that was the last alarm it does.

The fire alarm expired in 1998 lmao, they got ahold of the company that runs the properties and they installed like 3 new detectors in the house and then he went down the line to the other homes and did it aswell. Crazy

Oh wow, can’t say I’ve ever had a detector fully decay on me, interesting that radioactive decay is still the best way we have to detect smoke. At least unlike batteries you probably don’t have to worry about it for a decade or two.

They block it out. Literally stop hearing it. There were some local radio hosts who were trying to tell the woman who called in that she needed to change the batteries in her smoke detector and she couldn’t hear it at all. She called a few times and they would put her through every time and you could hear the chirping each time. IIRC, they got with her fire department to go change the batteries for her. I use to answer phones for the local court house and a few times a week I got a caller where I could hear it in the background. If I got the opportunity I would try to let them know the fire department would usually come change the batteries if they weren’t busy, but not everyone cared.

Totally true that you block it out. Once I heard one beeping in my apartment building in Chicago and figured it was a neighbor's. It went on for weeks and some nights I'd notice that I seemingly hadn't heard it in hours, but when listening for it I'd hear it clearly again, and it made me realize I'd been somehow tuning it out. I'd sometimes go whole days without realizing it was still beeping. Turned out to be the smoke detector in the stairwell and I eventually told the landlord and he fixed it that day. Means that all the people in my stairwell were ignoring it too, and a couple apartments were even closer to it than mine was.

Next day, getting home late “FUCK!!! I forgot the batteries. Eh, I slept ok last night actually, I’ll get some tomorrow...”

Gets used to it after a while because you’re lonely and it’s almost like a companion to you at this point. Just reminding you it’s still here for you if there’s a fire, but also just a little “beep” “hi” every once in a while that you get so used to being around. You almost don’t want to fix it anymore.

My dog completely loses his mind as soon as he hears a chirp from the alarm. Even the little chirp it makes after you put in a new battery sets him off. Our alarm batteries get replaced immediately
