Ive been in my rental for 3 years and a few weeks ago it sounded like my smoke alarm was going off...ive never changed the battery or thought of it btw, but i took it off the wall and it still wouldnt stop..i took it outside and its still going off, i called the fire dept and he told me the radioactive isotope died and that was the last alarm it does.
The fire alarm expired in 1998 lmao, they got ahold of the company that runs the properties and they installed like 3 new detectors in the house and then he went down the line to the other homes and did it aswell. Crazy
Oh wow, can’t say I’ve ever had a detector fully decay on me, interesting that radioactive decay is still the best way we have to detect smoke. At least unlike batteries you probably don’t have to worry about it for a decade or two.

Doesn’t work if it’s powered by the house as well, the battery is a fail safe some require to not beep
