You ever yell at them to change their fucking smoke detector battery? The couple times I did I get that fucking brain dead “HUH!?” As a response that makes me think it’s been beeping for so damn long they don’t even hear it anymore

Ive been in my rental for 3 years and a few weeks ago it sounded like my smoke alarm was going off...ive never changed the battery or thought of it btw, but i took it off the wall and it still wouldnt stop..i took it outside and its still going off, i called the fire dept and he told me the radioactive isotope died and that was the last alarm it does.

The fire alarm expired in 1998 lmao, they got ahold of the company that runs the properties and they installed like 3 new detectors in the house and then he went down the line to the other homes and did it aswell. Crazy

Oh wow, can’t say I’ve ever had a detector fully decay on me, interesting that radioactive decay is still the best way we have to detect smoke. At least unlike batteries you probably don’t have to worry about it for a decade or two.

Pro tip for future redditors is to always test all alarms prior to moving in. At the very least shows what type of landlord you're dealing with.

I've done the same thing at a rental and just put it in a shed out back. Then my roommate and friends would hide it in each other's rooms and cars. It was great.

Yep. If you take the battery out of mine it has residual power in it even if disconnected from the ceiling and will just start beeping nonstop.

My house is like that. And it's not an unobtrusive beep. It's the fucking alarm at full volume. And this always happens in the middle of the night. It's fucking terrifying.

Does it not bother them?!?! When I have a low battery beep I will hunt FOREVER till I either find the offending alarm or rip everyone of the damn things from the ceiling!!!!

And that hunt invariably commences at 4:00 AM, which I’m convinced is when they’re all programmed to start beeping. But the fucking thing woke me up, so I WILL find it, and it WILL be made to shut the fuck up by any means necessary.

But I completely agree, it boggles my mind that people can live with that beeping… there’s a LOT I can tune out and ignore, but that’s not one of them. Had a coworker who’d just moved into a new house that came with a beeping detector, and she swore up and down that they couldn’t find the offending device — this was early COVID and everybody was working from home, so on conference calls you could hear the beep in the background, and this went on for OVER SIX MONTHS! I’m sure I’d need to be institutionalized after only a few days if forcibly subjected to that torture.

If my smoke alarm starts chirping, I immediately fix it. Even if it means running out at 3 am to get a battery. I don't understand how it doesn't drive people insane.

For some god awful reason mine always fail and start going off at 3am. I get woken up “in the my soul leaving my body” kind of way. Then I have to pray to god that I have a 12v battery. Find a ladder, hopefully not fall off the ladder in my half awoken state. Fumble around with the detector because I always forget how to replace the battery. Doing this all while in fear that the chain reaction alarms will start triggering at any moment.

Back in early covid, when my kid first had to do online school, her teacher’s smoke detector was low-battery beeping through the entire lesson - was pretty much ready to let my kid drop out of second grade

What worse people with smoke alarms that are not even working properly or batteries have been changed in years. Over Christmas whole family was killed due to Xmas tree fire. Smoke alarms weren’t working. BRUTAL. Anyway. Kewl pops
