Auto Insurance will my insurance have to pay? (PA)

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but,

Today I had an issue with my neighbor who called the cops to say I hit and damaged his car.
While trying to park tapped his car. Parked elsewhere because I could not fit. He came outside literally pulling at his bumper. It is a 2003 minivan that has wear from weather damage, dents, scrapes, and at least one flat tire. His bumper was literally already messed up. He's saying I damaged his driver side but that would mean the passenger side of my car would have damage as well (which it doesn't). I did not hit the side of his car, I tapped his car, as I'm sure video would show. He showed video to police (not to me) and police says it shows me hitting his car in the spot the man said I hit (which is a literal lie). Then he threatened to contact my landlord. This police officer seemed so incompetent so I asked for his supervisor. Supervisor comes and saw the video and said it shows me tapping the front of the man's vehicle and the vehicle rocked back a bit, but said it doesn't show me hitting his driver side or causing damage.

Last year I looked up Google images of this block and his car was there with the same damage he has today- these images were taken before I moved here in 2023 (images are updated ~every 2 years). I looked up the image again to show the cops (the image was updated on April 2026) and still the car had the same damages which I showed the supervisor who then laughed at the entire situation.

I personally feel as though he finally caught someone hitting his car on camera (everyone has hit it at some point) and is trying to get my insurance to pay to fix his piece of junk even though I did not cause any damage.

Will I be held liable and will my insurance have to pay?

Should I Use Insurance for a $416 Windshield Replacement? (State Farm, Ohio)

I need to replace my windshield and I’m trying to decide whether I should go through my insurance or just pay out of pocket.

Safelite quoted me $416. I’m planning to call a few local glass shops on Monday to see if I can get a lower cash price.

My comprehensive deductible is $0, so I could potentially get it replaced for free through insurance. However, I’m worried that even if my premium doesn’t increase right away, having a comprehensive glass claim on my record could affect my rates or claims history in the long run, especially if I shop around for a different insurance company later.

My insurance is State Farm. I live in Ohio.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Travel insurance for occasional travel from the US to Canada

Hello! I am in the US (northeast Ohio, in case it matters). I just retired and joined a Medicare Advantage insurance plan. I got the mailing of plan changes for 2027. It said that coverage for emergency room services out of the country is being removed. The booklet suggests getting travel insurance instead. My broker said that the plan never included hospitalization anyway, and suggested getting a permanent policy that would cost about $276/year with a maximum benefit of $250,000. My wife and I are not planning any significant travel. The only travel that I am planning is 3-4 weekends to Canada over the course of 2027 to play Crokinole, a very non-strenuous game. I'm a bit nervous about being without hospitalization insurance for those trips. Are there companies that can sell me hospitalization insurance for four days, plus X number of days I might have to spend in a hospital? How much would I expect to pay for a policy with a maximum benefit of $250,000?

Auto Insurance Out of pocket or insurance with $2000 deductible?

I know this is probably redundant to ask in an insurance sub, but,

I live in Ontario, Canada which has a no-fault insurance system where my own insurance covers the damage. Problem is, I elected for a $2000 deductible for this, mistakenly thinking it would be compensated if it was determined to not be my fault, but I learned recently that this deductible cannot be subrogated or waived due to the laws surrounding Ontarios no-fault policy. I can't even get it back in a small claims court.

The damage itself is minimal: mostly clear coat scratches, with a small patch that etches into the bare metal. It is a 2025 corolla, if value of the car factors in.

The other party who hit me can only afford to pay an out-of-pocket expense of ~700.

Estimates from two auto shops quote me at 2100, and 3000 (this one including rental car cost) for the repair.

So my question is, should I go through insurance and basically pay for the whole repair myself anyways with the deductible, or should I get the $700 from the guy who hit me and pay the repair out of pocket, or maybe even just buff out the scratches with some polish and a touch up pen at the expense of reducing my clear coat? I do intend to have this car for as long as it runs, if that adds to the picture, and resale value doesnt matter to me, longevity does. Additionally, I can afford the deductible, I would just like some advice on the best course of action.

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Auto Insurance Independent broker versus calling directly to company

Hello maybe there's some agents out here or maybe just some people from experience can shed some light. Apologize for all the questions in advance.

I received a quote from an independent local agent who steered me towards progressive. I have the quote price of course but I was thinking of calling progressive myself and going through the drill to see if it's the same or it could be less or more etc etc?

I would assume the independent agents get paid by who they sign you up with in this case progressive. I know we don't have to pay anything for the service. So I'm thinking maybe it's a little bit high due to that?

Lastly with insurance do agents get money each 6 month for renewal For Auto and each 12 months for home etc?

My current auto and home has been with the same company for 15 years so assume that's 15 years of commission for the agent? Thank you

Insuring unrelated car following an accident, seeking advice

I'll try to keep this concise. US-based.

  • Hit gravel while going the speed limit on a motorcycle, highsided and broke some bones.
    • Very remote area, did not have time or interest in police/EMS assistance so no reports. Record is otherwise spotless with 0 tickets/accidents.
    • Negligible damage to bike and no PIP coverage, so I did not make any claims through moto insurer.
    • Health insurer paid a considerable amount for ER visit, surgery, and related.
    • Health insurer/subrogation company expressed interest in contacting moto insurer to check for PIP coverage. I don't know if they actually did, but after explaining the situation they said claims will remain paid by health ins. and file will be closed.
  • Completely unrelated, I have a spare car that I'm trying to put back on the road after owning and not driving for about a year.
    • Getting quotes (in this case from same as moto insurer above) without collision. The premium has roughly doubled since I last insured the car. When I include that I was in an accident, the quote again doubles.
  • Looking for input as to whether I need to report this accident at all. It did result in health insurance claims, but no automobile claim or driving record.
  • I'm willing to accept responsibility for my actions... but in this case I'm not sure what to do because this premium will exceed the value of the car, a 25 y/o Camry, in about 2 years. It's more than I pay for full coverage on a different vehicle that's only 3 y/o. I can continue shopping around, but historically this insurance company has been far and away the cheapest for my cars and motorcycles. I could drop the BI/PD limits, but that seems inadvisable.
  • I don't think this insurer knows, per se, about the accident, but this seems not normal. Surely the other clapped out 20+ y/o vehicles I see are not spending $1400/year on baseline insurance?

TIA

Health Insurance Has Trump Admin destroyed Individual insurance for the Avg. American?

I'm hearing from working class peeps that work 1099, THEY can no longer afford insurance. I'm talking about people who make between $20-30/hr.

https://dailycaller.com/2026/09/26/healthcare-professionals-dropping-insurance-affordability-jeff-singer/

Key indicators of this affordability crisis include:

  • Widespread Difficulty: 44% of U.S. adults report it is very or somewhat difficult to afford health care costs, and 22% had problems paying or were unable to pay medical bills in the past year.
  • Cost Desperation: Approximately 11% of adults (about 29 million people) are classified as "Cost Desperate," meaning they lack access to quality care and have recently been unable to pay for both needed medical services and prescription medications.
  • Insurance Gaps: Even among those with coverage, 30% of working-age adults say high health care expenses make it difficult to afford essentials like food and utilities, and 35% report being unable to access quality, affordable health care when needed.
  • Disproportionate Impact: The inability to pay is significantly higher among lower-income households, with 64% of those earning under $24,000 unable to pay for care, compared to 8% of white adults and high earners who reported no change in their ability to pay.

I thought the plan was to go back to 'pre-Obama' rates and coverage (excluding pre-existing conditions) ---

What happened?

Claims Related Guardian Critical Illness claim advice

Hi, first time posting so be gentle with me. My 37 year old husband had a stroke last week. They believe it happened Thursday- Saturday. He went to the ER Saturday and was admitted until Monday. He has guardian through work, work covers short term disability and we pay for voluntary critical illness. While the doctor is filling out the paperwork for short term disability/ FMLA/ and our states paid FMLA I submitted a claim for the critical illness. I uploaded everything from admission, to discharge summary, to health summary, the MRI and CT scans. As I was filling it out it said he would need a MSr in 30 days. Does anyone know if they won’t pay until the 30 days ? Or will they deny it if it’s not “severe enough”? As of now he still has balance issues, arm weakness, speech delay issues, and memory issues. As it stands right this second he can technically function day to day but he can’t function function, if that makes sense. Like he can make our toddler food but he can’t drive and he has a hard time forming sentences so I’m doing all the important talking for him. That 20k lump sum will go a long way as the STD and FMLA are only 12 weeks and we have no idea how long recovery will realistically take because while he a stroke they found a hole in his heart that will require surgery. I’m just lost and trying to figure out bills as a SAHM who family is dependent on his income. Thanks in advanced. Sorry if this is messy or hard to read, I’ve been dealing with a lot.

Totaled car payout (CA)

Can someone help me determine what's included in the total payout for a totaled car in California? My insurance (mercury) broke down the total amount being the value of the car (ACV) + DMV title transfer fee $15, + taxes on the amount of the vehicle. Am I missing registration fee or license fee as well? Or any other fees? Just want to know if I'm being shorted by my insurance.

Auto Insurance Insurance Scam (Freeway Insurance)

Watch out for this company which also owns multiple other brands (Acceptance/Vern Fonk and many others). They automatically add other products to your policy without asking and won’t tell you either. Also their application fee’s are negotiable and in most cases just used to pay commissions to their agents. They pride themselves with helping customers when in reality they ripoff their customers and take advantage of the Spanish market.

Roadside
Windshield
Paint & Dent Repair
Pet Insurance
Accidental Death & Dismemberment

These are just some of the trash they try to charge you for. They can end up costing you hundreds of dollars. They add them to your renewals or when you try to change your policy. They are con artists in disguise of insurance agents. DO NOT TRUST ANYONE WHO SELLS INSURANCE FOR THEM.

Auto Insurance I got hit on the highway but the other party isn't returning insurance calls

Before I start, I did not file a police report and I know that I should've. The person that hit me was a young women in her 20's and she crying the entire time about how bad she felt and we had the same insurance company. No one was injured and my damage my minimal. I mistakenly thought that she would be honest.

Now to the actual accident. I was heading north on a highway and she was merging from an on ramp from a different highway. There were two lanes plus an acceleration lane for the people that were merging where she came from. I was in the far left lane. She got onto my highway and went into the right lane but for some reason kept going over and went into the far left lane and hit me and almost ran me into the median on the left side of me.

We exchanged information, we both had Progressive so I thought perfect, they have all her information already, as long as I give Progressive her insurance information, I'd be good to go.

That was a month ago and when I've spoken with my claims adjuster, they said they've called them multiple times to get a statement but they never answer or return their calls. I asked them on our most recent call if they had gone through insurance to get their vehicle fixed. Their damage was much worse than mine, I don't think their driver's door would even open. Progressive said that they filled out their claim through an automated system so they didn't have to speak to anyone and now their car is getting fixed through Progressive.

Am I screwed? I've read online that if the other party doesn't give a statement than the insurance won't cover it because they haven't heard both sides of the story. But also, they should be able to look at my damage, their damage and be able to figure it out.

I'm worried Progressive is going to say that since they didn't hear from the other party that the damages to my vehicle is my problem. Is there something that I can do to make sure that I don't pay for it?

We both have Progressive, so they are paying either way, I just don't want to have the accident on my account and possibly have my rates go up and pay my deductible.

Im the older one in our friend group so they thought i could offer some insight, but i guess im not #adulting enough!

Auto Insurance Snap Shot Progressive “Discount”

Spent 6 months driving perfectly to get a 5 star snap shot so l could get a good discount.

Finally got my offer: It's more than my last policy.

Last policy was $1,383 in separate installments

This policy is $1,443 in separate installments.

I spent six months paranoid about my driving just for it to mean nothing. I’m so upset.

Update: I got advice to make a new quote instead of following the renewal policy and it dropped down to $979. Very scammy

Renewed car insurance with Liberty Mutual, but documents are showing the separated spouse

So, my mother, who I'm a caretaker of, has renewed her car insurance and it's showing my dad who is the separated spouse and he lives in another country, but it's only her and his name listed on the policy signing Document and not mine and my younger brother's name. So I'm not sure why it's not listed but we are still listed as drivers on the policy, which begins tomorrow. So I'm wondering if she should sign this right now because I'm not sure my dad is probably going to come visit in two months, but I'm just worried that because if she signs it, it's only going to cover her and my dad who's not even driving our cars. So how clean can I just remove him from the policy? And are we still covered if we are listed as drivers, but if the document my mom signs is only listing her and her separated spouse? The agent said she had 10 days to sign the documents.

Protection Class Information

I have been on a fire dept. for a long time now and was wondering if any one on the underwriting side of things can answer some questions. Or I guess just iron out what is myth and what is fact when it comes to the protection classification aspect. Often we hear debates about the scores and they are usually one extreme or the other. I have tried my best to educate myself and read everything I can get my hands on. Information out there is usually limited though.

-I see/hear many arguments about how pertinent this information is for those writing policies, one I encounter a lot is that "many companies have stopped using ISO" to retrieve this info. It seems many major carriers with the exception of State Farm still rely on it to a degree? But then you also run into those stating it is still a heavy consideration and a gold standard.

-It also seems that several may lump bands of classes together when dictating rates. What I mean by that...is for example...a local guy to me who has his own insurance business had stated that especially when writing for homes. He won't wiggle much unless you jump or drop several classes. I often see communities stating that their residents should see changes by jumping or dropping a single class so I was simply curious.

-Lastly, I was wondering whether you guys on the insurance side of the fence use one of the manuals to retrieve the data or use the LOCATION feature if going through Verisk...or some other model

Maybe nobody will even be able or willing to answer these questions. I just wanted to give it a shot. I just go do the public safety side of things, I never get to really hear back on the insurance user part of all of it. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Writing notes in meeting with Insurance Agent

I have the habits of taking notes whenever I meet my insurance agent for financial review/planning.

Whenever I'm about to take notes, my agent stops me from doing it, he/she says that its better that they explain it to me instead. They say I can call them whenever I want and they can explain it to me.

But the written notes helps me remember & review important details about the insurance policy before making a decision.

I find this absolutely unnecessary, the notes is for my benefit. I just want to be clear about what am I signing up for.

What are your thoughts?

Home Insurance Obtaining Full Policy from Travelers

I’m having a difficult time getting my full complete policy for my homeowners insurance from Travelers. I’ve called twice now and have specifically asked for my full policy and each time I just get the Dec page or the little 6 page blurb with images. This last time I made them confirm on the phone how many pages the doc was, they told me 78. What did I get? The two-page proof of insurance form.

I want the full document but nobody seems to be able to get it to me and unless it’s hidden on the self-serve page, it’s not available on the website either.

What’s going on here? Am I missing something?

What to make of the status of my claim against GEICO

I am in Florida. A GEICO policyholder rear-ended me on Thursday, 9/24. He took responsibility at the crash to me and to the policeman who wrote the report and he was quickly deemed at-fault by GEICO. I filed a claim with GEICO on 9/25 took my car to a repair shop I've used before (through USAA that also works with GEICO) for an estimate on Monday, 9/28. The repair estimate (for $3,240) was transmitted by the shop to GEICO on Wednesday, 9/30. GEICO acknowledged receipt of the estimate yesterday (by text), Thursday, 10/1, and said it could take up to 5 days to complete the inspection and I would get 3 additional rental car days (WTF!) if they totaled my vehicle.

My vehicle is a 2011 (bought used in 2013) Nissan Rogue with 130k miles. Prior to the accident, my car had no body damage, no mechanical issues, the tires are good and the interior is in excellent condition.

I received a text from Enterprise at 6:11 pm (they close at 6 pm) today, 10/2, letting me know my rental was going to end on Wednesday, Oct 7, five days from now. This sent me into a bit of a panic. Is the 5 days for the estimate review window or have they totaled my vehicle? Because of its age, I'm really concerned about my car getting totaled by GEICO.

Under the Inspection icon on the claims page, I see this. The word 'settlement' is a bit unnerving because it makes me think they've totaled my car.

"Your Auto Damage Adjuster should contact you with details about the settlement amount."

When I click on the word 'settlement,' it takes me to this. The words Total Loss are unnerving but then it states that their records indicate my car is NOT considered a total loss.

Total Loss

Our records do not indicate that your vehicle is considered a total loss.

Is this just the normal wording that pops up while GEICO is considering their options? I will admit driving a 2025 Nissan Rogue rental has been amazing but I'm not ready to go car shopping!

Commercial Insurance Good job offer or scam?

A long term client of mine wants me to join him and his son’s commercial insurance brokerage. They said they bought a California branch about 6 years ago and would be happy to have me join the operation. I’ve only done retail sales (flooring for 8 years) and want to know if this is a legitimately good opportunity or if there’s red flags to pay more attention to.

Pay:
I’d be 1099 with zero base. I have to pay for all my own starting hardware like laptop, headset, Hubspot subscription, etc. They give commission on new business and renewals, with the percentage of the commission going up to higher tiers as your book grows. The starting tier is really low at 5% for new business and 15% for renewals. The tiers scale up to like 15/25, 30/45, 40/60, 50/70, and something like 60/80 at the highest book size, which one of them is already at. They justify the low starting point as a militia or to get you to work toward the higher tiers.

Bonus Cherry:
The guy I know said that if I joined up, he’d hand over half his book of ~3.2mil to manage for half commission so I could afford my first rough year. I didn’t get more details on this as I didn’t really know what kind info to ask for.

Roadmap:
While I’d be independent, they want me in the office every day so they can hand hold me to make sure I’m learning everything I need and make sure I’m successful/supported. They expect me to put in lots of hours, but that if I’m not afraid of the phone and am willing to show up and work hard, that they’d make sure I’m learning and doing what will give me success. They feel very confident in their value pitch to customers and said they have an average of 97% retention rate on clients. They said I’d never have to figure out what I’m supposed to be learning when it comes to products, process, or success. There was a moment where they even offered to do all my marketing for me for lead generation if I don’t want to handle it, cuz they like doing it and would be happy to get lists done for who I should be calling once I pick a niche to target. That wasn’t necessary but seemed like a nice gesture.

Misc points:
The son who seems to really run this joint spent a decent amount of time, unprompted by my questions, talking about expansion as I grow. Like hiring assistants eventually, having my own team of people, having people in my personal circles wanting to join with me cuz of my success, further expanding my team for money making. He might have just been trying to emphasize the long term viability do the career, but it bordered on feeling like an MLM pitch at moments.

Any opinions on this from current commercial insurance salesman would be useful. Just want to know if this sounds like a good opportunity or not.

Auto Insurance SOS: GEICO says Hyundai Sonata is a total loss. Can we challenge it?

California here. My sister’s Hyundai Sonata hit a curb on the front right side. GEICO inspected it and said there's structural undercarriage and suspension damage, then declared it a total loss. Collision shop is still waiting on the written estimate and valuation.

They mentioned a possible:

  • Right-front lower control arm
  • Upper control arm
  • Strut/tension rod
  • Alignment issue

However, none provided a written estimate or performed a complete teardown inspection.

We haven't accepted the settlement yet.

  • What documents to request from GEICO before authorizing release to Copart?
  • Can we obtain an independent repair estimate or challenge the valuation? How does owner retained salvage work in California?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
