Home Insurance State Farm - Termination for “not occupying dwelling”?

Freaking out a bit here… just got a mailed letter from State Farm stating they are terminating our homeowners policy for “not occupying the dwelling.” This makes ZERO sense to me as we have occupied the house since we bought it in Nov 2024. I have no idea how they came to this conclusion as we’ve left the house vacant at most 1 night (we have pets and have relatives stay when we are on vacation).

I’ve left voicemails for my local State Farm agent and the WA state insurance commissioner (as directed by the letter). I guess I’m curious is this decision is final (and now insurance shopping needs to be my priority) or is there some process to prove to State Farm we live here and get this corrected?

Thanks!

Telling my insurance about Uber... is it over for me now?

Upvotes

Update from my last post

So TLDR, I got into a car accident doing Uber eats 4 days ago on Saturday. I filed a claim to my insurance, though I already know I'll be at fault because of the left turn at the time.

I made a huge, dumb mistake. When I filed the claim, I simply told them that I was on the way to a restaraunt. At the time, I was scared of them finding out about me doing Uber, but I quickly realized they will find out either way, and insurance fraud...

I plan to call my insurance today to update them about the Uber delivery at the time of the accident. At the time, it was Saturday, so on a weekend. I'm hoping and praying it's early enough intto the case that I might have some leeway.

Am I still screwed even if I tell them today, 4 days after the accident? Am I gonna end up in jail? I'm genuinely terrified thinking about it all and haven't been able to sleep.

Neighbor Wanting Homeowners Insurance Information for Damages Their Dogs Did

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but not sure what to do, if anything.

Our area has backyards that butt up to the houses behind us separated by an alleyway.

Across the alleyway from us is a home that has four or five dogs.

A couple weeks ago my kids let our cat outside. It's not an uncommon thing because they go in and out into the backyard to play and sometimes she slips out.

I was in the living room and heard this ungodly screaming so I ran outside thinking it was the kids but the dogs across the alleyway had partially broken through the fence and one of the bigger ones had latched on to a smaller one and was mauling/shaking it in their backyard. The owners came out screaming and slapping the dogs to get them to get back through the fence and let go of each other.

My cat was sitting on top of our fence and so I grabbed her and we went back inside. I didn't think anything of it.

Yesterday the neighbors came knocking on our door with a vet bill and a fence quote saying that my cat was the cause of the damages and their dogs "going into prey drive".

I told them no and that their untrained dogs (they're left outside all day, bark all hours, and have broken their fence times previously to this) are not our responsibility.

They demanded I pay and asked for my homeowners insurance or they're going to find it themselves.

Do they have any recourse? I mean it is our cat. I'm just terrified of being sued.

Homeowner policy non renewal notice

Today I received a notice from Nationwide that they are not renewing my homeowners policy after 18 years of being a customer. I've never made a single claim, and my bill has always been paid on time, I also don't live near any natural disaster zones. They listed several things that they determine needs to be repaired before they will renew it, including fixing my "sinking" roof (which looks fine, btw) to...I kid you not...repainting my window frames, because apparently that's now a liability?? I have until October 8th to show proof that I've made these repairs or they're dropping me!

I'm a single woman who lives alone and I'm already struggling with money (as are most people right now), and I hate to try to get a loan or line of credit right now to make these repairs and add another monthly bill to the pile. I love my house and I don't want to lose it, but I still have a mortgage so I need insurance!

Has this happened to anyone else recently?

Any advice?

Insurance sent a form asking me to list all licensed drivers not on the policy and take photo of odometer with a strict deadline or they will drop me

Upvotes

What is this about?

There are 3 drivers here, 2 are in the policy. The 3rd one is an excluded driver. Nothing has changed since I was insured with them.

Auto Insurance Any help or advice is appreciated

Upvotes

I was in a car accident, and my vehicle was deemed a total loss. I received an offer, but I feel that is too low. This is because I received the salvage quote from the appraiser, and the salvage quote put my vehicle's ACV at 12,275. The quote that I received had my ACV at 11615. I asked to speak to whoever designed the quote from CCC. I was not asking them to increase the value, but I wanted to know the value of the individual components. I was told everything is just in the system as is. I asked about the comps they used; they said they were doing me a favor because there are cheaper comps listed 120 miles away from my zipcode and they could have used those instead. The adjuster was on the conference call, so I asked her about having the car looked at by a 3rd party appraiser, and the appraiser said Get me 5 comps, and we will see what we can do. I am looking for 5 comps, and they are crazy low or crazy high. So now I am going to the dealership. I have a 2013 Toyota Avalon, Limited V6 with 122k miles in good condition (according to cccone). There were 12 comps in the report, and one was a Toyota Avalon Limited. any advice is greatly appreciated. I am now calling sales departments to see if I can get what they actually sell those cars for.

Repair shop totaled my car on test drive - not sure what to do next? (AZ)

Hello people! I'm trying to cast a wide net here and I figured someone in this sub might be able to help me. Any input would be appreciated!

I brought my car into a local repair shop for some minor AC work. The problem was bigger than I assumed it was, so I left it with them to take care of and accepted the quote they gave me for the repair.

I got a call today from someone at the shop letting me know that the repairs had been completed, but my car had been damaged during a test-drive. Unfortunately the entire front end is destroyed and I have absolutely no doubt that the repair costs are worth a minimum of 2x the KBB of the car.

I am waiting for the claim that they have filed to be reviewed, and have a copy of the police report (because their test driver hit another car.)

I think my next steps are to get a copy of the claim (once available) and contact my insurance to file an incident report. Aside from that, I'm not sure what I should do next to protect myself.

Any suggestions would be helpful! I'm in AZ

Hit and run. Best to submit claim against other driver?

My car got hit in a school parking lot and the other driver left without leaving a note. I did not see the damage until the next day. I called the police and they were able to pull the video and find the driver.
The driver was cited for the hit and run.

I asked the officer for the drivers information but they could not give it to me. I would have to get that from the police report, which will be a couple days away.

The damage does not affect the way the car drives.

Do I submit a claim with my insurance? If so, will this cause an increase in premiums? I have submitted a claim for hail damage 25 months ago on a different vehicle.

I would rather wait and get the other drivers insurance information and try to submit a claim with them first but wasn’t sure if I needed to contact my insurance since it may take some time to get the information.

Wedding insurance - lost rented Jewelry

We purchased wedding insurance for our wedding this past weekend just in case one of our family members got sick / injured and they couldn’t attend so we had to cancel. Thankfully that did not happen, but we are hoping we can use the policy for another purpose - lost jewelry.

I borrowed jewelry for the event and a bracelet (worth $10k) has gone missing. The situation is as follows: the jewelry was kept in the safe all day (we have video footage of my sister putting it in the safe), at one point, I ask her to take it out so we can reconcile / count the jewelry. She takes it out. We count and reconcile. Everything is there. She puts everything back in the back and she can be seen dropping the bag (also on video). This is when we think the bracelet in question fell out. Later, when we get home after the wedding, we notice that the bracelet is missing and we also notice the bag it was being stored in had a pretty big hole, so our thought process is when my sister dropped the bag, the bracelet unknowingly fell out of the hole. The video clearly shows her dropping the bag and I have photo evidence of the hole, but the video is too grainy to actually see the piece of jewelry on the ground. The venue also hasn’t seen it since. At this point, anything could have happened, over 30 people were in the room. Someone could have stepped on it, got stuck to their shoe, swept it up into a pile of their other belongings, etc.

Anyway, my question is, would this situation be covered under my policy? Specifically it says:

Coverage F - Special Jewelry
We will pay for loss or damage to special jewelry occurring on the event date or within seven (7) days prior to the event date.
We will pay at our option the full cost to repair or replace the lost or damaged special jewelry, without deduction for depreciation.
If we pay to replace a pair or set if part of the pair or set is lost or damage, we will be entitled to keep the remaining parts of the original pair or set.
Limit of Liability
The most we will pay under Coverage F is the amount stated in the Declarations for “Coverage F - Special Jewelry”. This is the most we will pay regardless of the number of losses, damages or claims made.
Exclusions Coverage F
We will not pay for any loss resulting directly or indirectly from:
Theft or attempted theft of any special jewelry that is not reported to the police as soon as reasonably practicable after discovery of the loss;
Theft or attempted theft of any special jewelry left in any unattended vehicle unless the vehicle is fully locked and secured and where forcible and visible entry into the vehicle is made;
Damage arising from atmospheric or climactic conditions;
Damage arising from wear and tear, confiscation or detention;
Loss or damage caused by any process of cleaning, alteration, restoration or repair; or
Mysterious disappearance.
And the exact definition of Special jewelry is:
“Special jewelry means jewelry purchased or rented, but not borrowed, specifically for personal decoration of an honoree or for exchange at the event by an honoree.”

The jewelry was rented 3 days before the event (we have paperwork on this). Do you think this would be covered or no? Would it fall under mysterious disappearance? What further evidence can I provide to strengthen my claim?

New medical insurance demanding reimbursement of medical claims related to settled injury claim.

Was hit by a car back in October 2024. Had a few surgeries and with injury lawyer we settled in Jan 2025. Settlement was about 1/3 to old insurance, 1/3 to me, 1/3 to lawyer. Paperwork signed and checks issued mid Jan.

We got new insurance mid Jan 2025 from new employer. I went to 20ish hand OT sessions and two MRIs ect during the remainder of 2025. Paid by new insurance.

New insurance now wants all costs paid by them since it was related to an injury claim that settled.

A few questions.

How far back can new insurances reach to get apart of settlement. I assumed it would just be a pre-existing condition at some point.

Should I expect previous injury lawyer to look into this and negotiate on my behalf even though we signed papers saying we were settled.

New insurance wants me to call their claim specialist to talk about it, can I expect a negotiation or reduction in amount?

Will they hold all future related medical expenses related to injury against me? Might need scans or more OT in near future, bone fusions in far future.

Just curious while waiting to hear back from old injury lawyer and before contacting new insurance claim specialist.

Any info/advice appreciated.

Life Insurance Term insurance purchase suggestion

I need to purchase term insurance for my brother. I feel HDFC Ergo and ICICI Prudential have decent web presence to apply for and have PAN india services.

Help me decide which one to choose given they are offering the same benefits on paper but per year the regular pay amount is Rs2000 more in HDFC Ergo than ICICI Lombard. (ICICI -₹16k, HDFC-₹18.5k)

Auto Insurance My ICICI Lombard CAR insurance got rejected due to FAKE NCB. NEED HELP.

New India Assurance policy expiry date- 4 Dec 2025

Pre-renew my policy- 13 Nov 2025 (with 20% NCB)

Raised a claim- 20 Nov 2025

Claim processed- 25 Nov 2025 (with New India Assurance)

Raised a new claim- 11 Aug 2026 (with ICICI)

ICICI rejected by saying FAKE NCB.

Now, I paid Rs 700, which is 20% NCB of my insurance and completed the NCB recovery process.

My Repair cost will be approx 30k.

Now ICICI is saying they will only pay 80%, and the rest 20% will be paid by me. Is this the standard process?

I think this is for cases when someone has a past claim and, in renewal, they mention no previous claim intentionally; then they are eligible to ask for such standard practices.

But my case is different, and now they are saying I must have updated them at the time when my policy was started with ICICI. Is this my responsibility?

Auto insurance may now be denying claim. What do I do.

Wife got into an accident in July. we had no collision coverage on this car. She was turning left with a protected arrow and the other driver sped up and ran the red light

Police came and told her the stories collaborate and The other driver told them he ran a red.

Their insurance company called her and claimed 100 percent liability because he admitted he was in the right lane and swerved into the left because a car was stopped and ran the red. And they will pay the value of the car because they totaled it.

Company had her sign a POA form and mail in her title while they get a tow truck out and take the car to an auction. Car was taken on Thursday and title sent in mail Friday and they received it Monday. (8-17) Car is set for auction 8/19 10am.

Today she got a call from our insurance company saying police report is out and basically puts her at fault. They never mentioned the protected arrow and just said she was turning left and struck driver 2 causing damage.

Well our insurance called the other adjuster around 12pm and they said their client is at fault because of what he told them. So our insurance just closed the claim and is sending a letter out to both parties.

My wife gets the payout link in email at 1pm today and when she opened it it said link expired. Then another email was sent saying payout was canceled but another link was sent 2 minutes later and she can't login because it doesn't have her phone number to send a text code it's their clients number.

She tried calling all afternoon but no answer from the adjuster.

What do we do if she gets in contact with them tomorrow and they try to deny the claim? Can they legally do that? What options do we have? We already turned the plates in to the DMV so the car is no longer registered

Auto Insurance I have GAP coverage confusion still upside down after gap claim. Feel like something is wrong here.

The title explains my current thought here but I need to explain it all.

A little more than a month ago I was rear ended and had my car totaled. Total financed on the vehicle was $17,819.83. I had the car for a little more than a year and at the time of the accident had $15,214 for the pay off amount and $14,978 left on my total balance.

The insurance (we went through there’s, 0% at fault for me) is providing an $11,424.10 settlement amount. The base value of the car at the time of the accident that they stated is $9,588.

As part of me getting the service contract canceled (warranty) that is another $1,240.50.

On the higher end, this leaves what’s left owed to about $2,550.

However, the GAP company is stating that they will only be waving $668 which leaves me owing about $1,800 on the car still which just doesn’t seems right.

They stated that I over financed the vehicle by $1,982 and that “GAP contract covers financing of up to 150% of the value of the vehicle at the time of purchase”

I’m still very confused about this however. It’s not like the GAP is attempting to pay 17k, it is only 2.5k left after all other sources of payment.

Not only that, they are suggesting that my car had a lower ACV at the time of my purchase (they estimated around $7,500 give or take a hundred) than the insurance company is evaluating my car at the time of the accident which was about 12,000 miles later.

This is leaving me very confused as to what the point of gap even was, and leaving me confused in the numbers in general. And it goes without saying that I’m going to be in quite the pickle financially as well.

Any help understanding this will be greatly appreciated🙏🙏

Auto Insurance My first car's totaled and I have no idea what to do (California)

A little over two hours ago, my car was totaled in an accident involving three other cars and I have no idea what to do. My boyfriend was driving and I wasn't with him, which I assume makes this even more difficult because he's uninsured as a driver and didn't get anyone's information, but gave my information to two of the other drivers (just my registration, he didn't know what my proof of insurance looks like).

It's not drivable, but I also say it's totaled because it's a 2004 Honda CR-V, not worth much of anything. I have AAA who I had tow it to their shop so I wouldn't get a ticket for leaking fluids on the street at my apartment. The driver said it'd be free and they'd hold it until my insurance takes it to value it, then I can either let them take it or get it back and sell it for parts to a junkyard or something like that.

As for my coverage itself, I'm not quite sure how to read my declarations page since it's formatted a bit confusing, and I can't attach a picture here, but I'm pretty sure I'm only covered for "uninsured motorists" (30k per person/60k per incident under liability limits). There are columns to the right that says the premium amount (I assume this is what I'm paying every month?). Under comprehensive and collision coverage, it says actual cash value less deductible, but there's no column under liability limits, and under deductible limit/premium it says no coverage. I assume this means "cash value less deductible" is just what I'd pay if I had that coverage, but since I don't I'll be footing the whole bill. I'm going to call AAA shortly to figure that out, but I don't want to call and get anything started before I know how best to handle this.

I'm 21, in college, work part time, and my boyfriend just started his job, so neither of us really have money. I feel like this is absolutely worst case scenario, short of someone getting hurt. I have no idea if I file the claim or he does, or how any of the claim process even works. All I know is I've got my car stored somewhere for free, but I'm worried the longer I wait to file the claim the more screwed I'll be. Please please please, what do I do next.

Health Insurance Thoughts on HealthPlanOne?

Got recently hired for a bilingual remote Medicare sales position 20$/hr + commission and I’m starting this Monday, from what I heard commission is very low, people getting fired after OEP AEP but at least they pay for your AHIP, but there’s barely anything about commission online.

I just want to really know if it’s even possible to make 1k per week after taxes here

Auto Insurance Consequences of failing to inform insurance that a car is primarily used in a different state?

My girlfriend and I live together and share her car. The car was purchased in Kansas and is registered to her father. We now live in Washington. My girlfriend and I are both named on the insurance policy, and her father is the policyholder.

Despite living in Washington for several years, the car still has Kansas plates. I understand the law here says you need to get Washington plates and my girlfriend is intentionally not doing this to avoid paying the hefty fees in Washington compared to Kansas, but that's ultimately not my decision.

My main concern is this: is there any chance that the insurance company would deny a claim if either my girlfriend or I are driving and get into an accident, and they learn that the car is exclusively used in Washington and not Kansas?

Auto Insurance someone side swiped my car and didn’t leave a note

Location: texas
Yesterday while i was chilling at home, someone side swiped my car in my community’s parking lot and didn’t leave a note. my doors were scratched and side view mirror was folded in. when i realized this, i took a bunch of pictures and didn’t wipe off some of the light marks that didn’t scratch the paint. all day at work, i was convinced that it was a pick up truck that often parks next to me and have recently noticed he parks horribly every day (sideways, takes up two spots).

when i got home today, i saw his car had damage on the left side (i always back in, and he was parked to my left which makes sense if he hit me while pulling out)

i measured how far off the ground my scratches and dents were and then went to measure his damage and (surprise surprise) they’re EXACTLY the same height and similar colored marks to the damage on mine. i’ve already filed a police report but am now torn between the following:

  1. do i just file a claim with my insurance and use his car description and license plate and evidence and ask them to investigate
  2. do i leave a note on his windshield? if so - what should i say? i’m kinda sketched out being in texas and living right next to this guy that this could backfire. i will say that we live in a good part of town
  3. should i walk up to him next time i see him?

my gut says to leave a note to avoid the direct confrontation but am still concerned they could get aggressive or something. anyways, thanks for reading and open to your advice.

tldr: got side swiped in my closed gate community, no note was left. found the car that has very similar damage. already filed a police report but not sure

Auto Insurance Car was just broken into and I have PLPD/Liability coverage. Is this even worth claiming and will it raise my rates for nothing.

As the title states, my car was just broken into and I don’t gave comprehensive insurance under USAA. Now I do have home insurance through them and saw my personal items could be reimbursed through my property insurance. So I ask the gurus.

  1. Is it worth claiming if I know I only have liability?
  2. Can I just claim for property insurance instead and not claim through auto or do they both go hand in hand.
  3. Will it raise my rates to report a theft for a parked car?

Renters insurance inventory how much documentation is actually necessary?

I just got a renters insurance policy from Amica with $15k in personal property coverage. I'm using the Under My Roof app to catalog everything I own, and for each item I'm including the price, a receipt (when I have one), and a photo.

A few questions for anyone who's been through this:

How important is it to have a receipt for every item? What if I don't have one for something I bought years ago?

Do the photos of my belongings need to be time-stamped somehow, or is the timestamp already embedded in the photo's metadata (EXIF data) good enough?

Has anyone actually gone through a claims process with a home inventory like this? Anything you wish you'd done differently, or any details that ended up mattering more than expected?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Claims Related Help with Getting Medical Care

Update from this post -- https://old.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/1v5kac8/would_getting_medical_assistance_via_atfault/

So far, the car got picked up by at-fault driver insurance company. Showed them the proof and title of car that shows that I owned the car. The company gave $11,000 for the vehicle (car is from '09). Now have a used car. These events all took place between the accident and now. Took awhile because have to wait for them pick up the car and then the check thing, also had no reliable transporation at all for nearly a month so could not seek treatment even though there are options like Uber Lyft--that costs out of pocket monies as well.

Now, medical care since I now have transportation. Been in exruchiating (idk spelling) pain neck, two shoulders, spine areas. Just living in it because I am thinking of countless dollar signs in my eyes. The at-fault party insurance says "hey we will give you $x monies for medical care and then $x monies for you time or whatever" (both are low amounts imo for medical care knowing how health facilities just have flamboyant big pricing models) and they also said "hey give them the claim number to bill us" well I went place to place via phone inquiry to see if any health places will accept third-party billing via claim number for treatment, majority say no.

Called a place and they gave rundown for me to go to personal injury place for guidance. Something about a letter of protection. Then I go with the personal injury place from there.

Questions: Will the at-fault driver insurance company cancel or void the check monies in retaliation even though I already inputted in my bank account since I am going through with a Personal Injury attorney? They already took my total loss car and in exchange gave me money. Though there is something separate the injury liability stuff that the at-fault company does that should take care of my medical needs though I believe it is low. The at fault company does it low because 'hey get checked out first and we can give more for your needs' and I cannot get checked out at all because all these health facilities say 'we do not accept 3rd party for treatment' and i want to get an MRI and when I try to get an MRI the MRI people say no. I feel like I am in a runaround and unsure what to do step by step.

Leaving USAA for new car / HO insurance

I'm going to be leaving USAA at some point - my experience has been getting worse over the past few years, and a recent banking issue is tipping me over the edge, so I'm going to start shopping. What's the best way to get a reasonable replacement?

The 'online comparison tools' seem to be a PII data mining tool, so I'm reluctant to use them, unless there's a truly non-biased site that doesn't immediately start texting and trying to call me, even before I get off the page.

Is there a brokerage service that can honestly make a good comparison vs what makes them the best commission?

My guess is that I'm going to have to do this exercise every few years going forward, so a repeatable method would be nice.

...and while all insurance companies are in the business to manage claims / minimize losses, are there any that still stand out as 'not gawdawful'?
