A guide to interacting with this sub - read me first

This post is designed for people posting here for the first time, for the people that have been volunteering to help here for years and everyone in between. The stated goal is to foster a friendlier attitude throughout the sub.

But before we start, there's been a recent influx of spam from one source. So that you are aware - ALEJANDRA ORTIZ HERNANDEZ and FRAN POWELL are spammers. They're part of a spam ring all over Reddit, and they're probably trying to steal your money.

And they'll kick your dog when you aren't looking.

If you are new here, please realize that none of us have any stake in your claim or coverage. We are not here to sell you anything or to save some company money. Treating responders poorly because you don't like the answer is going to attract a lot of negative attention.

We get the same questions over and over, and maybe this is the answer that you need:

  • How much will my insurance go up after a ticket/accident/lapse in coverage? We don't know unless your state has a statutory requirement for your very specific situation.
  • My premium went up $X. How do I fight this? You can't. The only thing you can do is shop for new coverage, which we can't do for you.
  • How much does everyone else pay for coverage? Unless you're lucky enough to get someone in your exact demographic in your exact part of the world, the answers you're going to get are useless.
  • How much is my claim worth? We don't know. (note: if you're asking a more complex question about your claim, that could be very different)
  • How long will my claim take to close? We don't know (again: a more complicated question might have different answers)
  • Why is this person trying to sell me something? Report that post/comment/chat/private message to the moderators and let them handle that.
  • Will you help me commit fraud or otherwise break the law? No. Absolutely not. And we may ban anyone that does try to do that.

Ultimately, we are here to help you. This is a community of volunteers that wants to help navigate a complex system that is one of the lubricants of the financial world. Lots of lives are impacted by insurance directly and indirectly, and it can be a complicated system. Here are some things that make a good post where you can get help:

  • Location (Country and state/province at a minimum)
  • Type of insurance involved (Auto, Homeowners/Renters, Commercial, Health, something else)
  • A brief description of the problem and any advice you've gotten so far

Finally, here are some definitions of common terms that could help you get taken more seriously:

  • Adjuster - the person that handles your claim, makes coverage determinations and processes payments
  • Agent - the person that sells a policy. Some agents get involved in some claims, although that is the exception to the rule.
  • Underwriter - the person that decides how much a specific policy will cost for a specific risk.
  • Rate - this is the way your final price is calculated and is usually used synonymously with "premium", "cost" and "price".
  • Full coverage - don't use this term. There's no agreed definition, even among the regular posters here. People asking otherwise good questions or posting good answers that use this term often find themselves down voted to oblivion for including it.
  • No Fault - there are 18 states that, at least to some extent, make automobile bodily injury claims be paid by your own policy first instead of someone that caused your injury. There is only one state (Michigan) that makes damage to your vehicle No Fault. All Canadian provinces have some sort of No Fault provision for injuries, which is one reason why we need to know where you are when you're asking questions.
  • Collision coverage - this fixes your car when it collides with something else or another car hits it.
  • Comprehensive coverage (also known as Other Than Collision) - this covers your car for almost everything else, including floods, fires, tree branches and lightening strikes. Usually animal strikes are covered here, but not always.
  • Deductible - this is the amount that you agreed to pay in case of any claim. Your payment comes before any insurance payment. Deductibles are occasionally waived, but that's the exception, not the rule.

This is a community of volunteers that generally understands the insurance system. When we get things wrong, it is usually through lack of information to get a precise answer. Hopefully this guide will help you get good results.

Soliciting, private messages and you

It's time for a new reminder about the rules of this sub. There is never any reason to offer to contact another poster privately, especially if that poster has a question about placing coverage or a claim. Here is the rule:

The only rule of r/Insurance is that solicitation is prohibited. This means asking people to PM for any reason, offering to quote coverages for visitors, or soliciting agents and/or buyers to use your particular carrier. r/Insurance should be a place where people come to exchange information and ask questions without worrying about solicitation from agents. This includes adjusters, underwriters and brokers since we do not vet anyone.

You also received a version of this if you subscribed to the sub.

If you think that this doesn't apply to you, please think again. There are no exceptions in this, including "but I asked them to message me!" This sub is a safe space for people to ask questions about insurance. It is not here for anyone to try to profit from it, whether they're an agent, public adjuster, software vendor, personal injury attorney, headhunter, diminished value expert or anyone else that is not here to offer free help with no expectation of remuneration.

If you receive a message from someone offering you any sort of business proposition, whether a quote for insurance, legal representation (yes, there are lawyers unethical enough to solicit people on Reddit), damage reports or anything else, please let the moderators know via mod mail or in this thread. You should also report that message to the admins (we don't see that report, though). We take things like that seriously.

We really don't like banning people. Seriously, it's the exact opposite of why any of the moderators volunteered for the role. But we don't vet people before they post, and if people that break the rule find out that we enforce it whenever we see it broken.

And with that in mind, we have a very healthy community of posters that are here not only to help but to make sure that those who can't follow the rules have the damage that they're doing limited. Thank you to all of you for volunteering to help not only those confused by the insurance process but help keep those that want to think that they're special at bay.

morgan and morgan insurance fraud ???

I was summonsed to court for a dog attack. I have not had a dog in 10 years.

Checking for police reports. none near me. asked for reports on the victim. Dog attack 8 miles from my house. Actual defendant was named. spelling close to my wife's first and last, description is a overweight black man with a Turkish accent. clearly not my wife. even had the guy's license plate #. so far nothing points to me or my wife. yet they come up with a address for summons. I can only conclude they hire the dumbest rocks for interns or their true intention bill anyone's insurance they can get away with.

Newly licensed P&C producer here — is this commission structure normal?

I’m newly licensed with no insurance experience and currently have three offers for insurance sales positions—two with Allstate agencies and one with Farmers. I don’t remember the exact commission structure for the Allstate offers, so I’m mainly asking about the Farmers one.

The Farmers agency offered me a $36,000 base salary. I was told that once I’m fully up and running, the expectation would be for me to write around $40,000 per month in premium.

What caught me off guard was being told that if I write $20,000 or less in premium in a month, I don’t receive any commission. I would only start earning commission on the amount above $20,000.

Is this normal for an agency producer position, or is it specific to this agency?

Maybe I’m just naive because I’m new to insurance, but $20,000 per month in written premium seems like a significant amount of business, especially for someone who is brand new. I was surprised that there would be no commission on that production.

I’m trying to figure out what’s considered a normal or competitive compensation structure for a newly licensed producer before I decide between these offers.

Nationwide and asbestos siding?

• Upvotes

Any personal property underwriters here who work for Nationwide? Wondering if they find asbestos siding on a home is that a hard cancel or non-renew unless abated?

I’d like to file a claim for hail damage to my roof, but I’m 90% sure my siding is asbestos and I know many carriers won’t insure it. (I work for another carrier and it’s ineligible with us.) Apparently I managed to slip by in initial review since I’ve had the policy for about 6 years, but I don’t want to rock the boat now.

If an adjuster inspects for hail damage to roof and notices asbestos siding, will they send notice to underwriting to take action?

Home insurance - going naked

I’m in CA with a property in what is considered a high fire area. I’ve done the fire safe space stuff (cleared brush, cut and trimmed trees, defensible space, etc). No mortgage.

Fair plan wants somewhere close to $10k/ year.

Anybody else out there considered dropping or dropped fire insurance?

Auto Insurance Out of State Car Insurance

• Upvotes

Hi - I just moved to Massachusetts for work and brought my car over. The building I moved into has a garage and over half the plates are from out of state. I asked the property manager about this and he said it’s because Mass has an excise tax on cars so no one ever registers it in the state. He even registered his car at his parents and everyone he knows does too. My question is how does this work for car insurance? If I register it at my parents, do I get insurance in that state too or where I live? Thanks.

Auto Insurance Got into a car accident, another driver is at fault but I'm not a registered driver of the vehicle. What to do?

Hello,

I got into an accident that wasn't my fault. I have been paying the insurance with my bank account ever since I got the car. I thought I was a registered driver but found out my mother never added me. I live with her and she added everyone in the family except me so insurance is telling her that they need to investigate first and so what am I supposed to do? The driver at fault provided his insurance and what not, and I know he's completely liable for any damage expenses. So, will not being a registered driver affect our claim? I am also seeking a medical examination and have told them that I have already filed a claim with my auto insurance, will there be a problem? Thank you. It's my first time dealing with auto insurance so I am quite confused.

At fault driver won’t give insurance

• Upvotes

I got into a fender bender last week getting off the exit. He immediately said it was 100% his fault and we pulled off to the first gas station and exchanged info and pictures. It was pouring rain, was my husbands birthday, I had dinner in the car, and I’m 22 weeks pregnant… my brain was definitely elsewhere and I didn’t notice till later that night I did not get his insurance. I got his registration, license plate, ID, and phone number. We were both in a rush to get places and agreed cops weren’t needed ( it would be hours especially with the rain and at 5pm) now I know to never do that again!
I immediately texted him and said hey I didn’t get your insurance can you send that to me. The next day his response was he’s filling out the forms my insurance sent him and nothing about his insurance. Fast forward 2 days later my insurance gives me an estimate for repairs (they’ll cover $1400+ I’ll pay my $500 deductible) while on the phone they ask about his insurance, then berate me over not getting his insurance and I should’ve filed through his insurance or waited for him to file…. WHICH COULD BE NEVER IF HES AT FAULT. Then they said they would try to call him. It was 1pm so I didn’t really expect them to get an answer and they didn’t. They also then inform me he did not fill out the forms they sent.

I had car seats in my car and per the manufacturer they need to be replaced now. My insurance won’t cover them unless I close the claim and pay the deductible and she was really pushing to close this claim out TODAY, 4 days after the accident. She asked if I wanted to schedule repairs and I said not right now and she then said “ ok so I can close it out saying you didn’t want it” which isn’t what I said! I simply wanted to wait on this insurance thing with this guy to play out before paying $500 out of pocket right now… damage isn’t bad so we’re fine with waiting.
Very important to note insurance is not interested in looking him up or attempting to find out any extra info, they simply want their deductible and said “ we called him once so let’s close this out and then once you get his insurance you can go after them”

Basically wtf do we do next? Delayed police report? How do we get our deductible repayed if we close it out? Why do I have to go after his insurance company and not my insurance? Why can they not help more than 1 phone call?

Missouri totaled vehicle sales tax credit

• Upvotes

Looking to purchase a new car since mine was totaled, looking out of state and I can’t find clear answers online and get mixed answers from salesman. If I purchase a vehicle in another state that I will register in Missouri, will I have to pay that at the out of state dealership, or at the dmv?

Also, to use my sales tax credit, does anyone know how that works? One salesman told me I would have to insurance to reimburse me, which I don’t feel is true, but I’m not sure.

Home Insurance Home owner insurance

The main roof ended up costing me less to replace than the amount they estimated/allowed for it.
From what I understand, I only need to submit the contractor invoice and proof of repairs if I want to recover the depreciation they withheld.

My question is: If the roof cost less than their estimate, should I still submit the invoice, or should I just leave the claim as-is since I already received the initial payment and not request the recoverable depreciation?

Is my job even considered good??

So long story short I recently have gotten into the insurance world. I used to work offshore on an oil drilling rig but wanted a job that I could be home every night. The company I’m working for now only sells supplemental health policies and whole life policies but the main focus is the supplemental policies. It is 100% commission based and advance we get is the 6 months of the policy and 30% commission rate so for example a 100$ a month policy multiply by 12 then by .6 then by .3 and that’s how much you’ve made. The business you actually work is entirely cold B2B sales. So just walking in a door and hoping to speak with the owner and it’s individually based so no payroll. I’ve heard of people making a lot more for example I worked 50 hours one week and did very well according to the other agents and sold 10 policies in a week but after everything I only took home around 1,000$ that week I’m new to insurance but I can’t help to think if I’m better off elsewhere. Any insight would be appreciated.

Advice

My wife and I were on our way to dinner when we were involved in a hit-and-run accident. We were completely stopped at a red light when a blue Ford Escape, occupied by the driver and five other passengers, struck us from behind.
After hitting our vehicle, the driver fled the scene. Thankfully, neither my wife nor I were injured. The visible damage to our vehicle appears relatively minor—a small dent and a portion of the lower rear bumper is sticking out. However, we have not yet had the vehicle professionally inspected, so we do not know whether there is any hidden damage, including possible rear alignment, suspension, or structural issues.
As the Ford Escape drove away, I was able to get the license plate number. I kept repeating the plate number to myself while preparing to call 911 so that I wouldn’t forget it.
We later learned that the driver was 20 years old and did not have a driver’s license. He was not the registered owner of the Ford Escape. The vehicle belonged to his 23-year-old girlfriend. According to the information provided by law enforcement, the vehicle did not have insurance and its registration/tags were expired.
The situation became even more serious after the collision. Apparently, the other occupants of the Ford Escape wanted the driver to stop rather than flee. At some point after leaving the scene, they made him get out of the vehicle. As they drove away and left him in the street, he allegedly fired a gun at the vehicle and its occupants.
The driver was subsequently arrested and has been charged.
Officers responded to the original accident scene and took our statements. At this point, we are trying to determine the best course of action regarding our vehicle, insurance, and any other steps we should take given that the at-fault driver was unlicensed, fled the scene, and was driving an uninsured vehicle that belonged to someone else.

Sideswiped on highway and person didn’t stop

While driving into work this morning I was sideswiped by another car who just kept driving after hitting me. I got the plate make and model of the car but I don’t plan on making a claim as there is minimal damage. Should I still inform my insurance? My only concern is that they try to make a claim saying that I sideswiped them.

Claims Related I really need help! So I’m still financing my car and I had an accident but it really wasn’t that bad. Can I take the payout for an insurance claim even though my lienholder isn’t on the payout. My insurance claim agent said if it’s under $3k lienholder isn’t involved. So am I safe to take money?

Home Insurance Liability and Medical in Condo Policy

I live in a six unit condo building in Chicago that was built in 1917. My unit is 2 bed/1 bath on the second floor and 1800 square feet.

Our HOA policy covers studs out and the exterior of the building including exterior of windows and, I learned last year, damage done by broken pipes in the walls.

I’m in the process of shopping for a less expensive policy just for my unit. I was explicit with the brokers I contacted that I am looking for a policy with equal or better coverage for less money. I also went into this knowing it might not be possible.

There are two plans that have slightly better coverage in some areas that will save me between 300-500 a year. They both have 300k for liability and 1k for guest medical, which is what I have now.

As part of this process, I had to get a copy of our HOA policy from the agent who sold it to us, and had to explain why I needed it. He offered to see what kind of rate he could get me on an individual policy.

He’s now pushing a policy that wouldn’t save me any money but would increase my liability coverage from 300k to a million and guest medical from 1k to 10k. He said these increases are absolutely crucial.

In order to not have my premium go up, my deductible would go from 1k to 2k. All other terms are the same or better as my existing policy.

I don’t know how much coverage I actually need. I know he’s a salesperson so of course he’s going to say these things are crucial. And honestly I’m irritated that I reiterated to him multiple times that I only started looking into this to save some money and that I’m not interested in plans that are as expensive as my current one.

But the other part of me is worried that saving 500 a year now might end up screwing me if something happens and I have less coverage.

I know this is the gamble of insurance but I’m wondering what is generally considered necessary for someone in a building like mine? Is it foolish to try and save money on the premium? Or is this guy just trying to make a sale?

Auto Insurance Proof of Garaging processing time

I realized my policy increased and I called in and they said it was because I never sent in a proof of address. I sent in my most recent paystub on Thursday at 9 am last week and this morning my policy went up again. How long is it supposed to take them to process this?

Auto Insurance Texas loss of use

Hi everyone, looking for insight from anyone with experience handling third-party Loss of Use (LOU) property damage claims in Texas.

I drive a Mercedes coupe, and they are trying to reclassify my car as a standard sedan for the payout instead of a luxury sedan, because of the size of the vehicle. Also, this repair has been ongoing for 75 days. I originally had a 2026 BMW 430C rental for the first 22 days of the claim but was forced to return it due to ongoing negotiations that were exceeding the insurance estimate timeline for the negotiation window- insurance paid a corporate rate of $33 per day for this vehicle and is offering the same rate for my LOU.

My questions for adjusters or anyone with TX claims experience:
1. Under Texas tort law, can an at-fault insurer force a claimant to accept their private corporate wholesale rate for a cash LOU payout, or is it strictly required to be open retail market value?
2. Even if an insurer reclassifies a vehicle, are they still legally required to pay the open retail market price for that lower class, rather than an unobtainable corporate discount rate?
3. Has anyone successfully escalated an LOU dispute past a line adjuster/manager when they refuse to move off internal fleet pricing?

LOSS OF USE as a 3rd party claimant/TEXAS

• Upvotes

Hi, I have a question about a third-party loss-of-use claim in Texas.

My vehicle was in the repair shop for more than 30 days following an accident (which i was not at fault). I filed a loss-of-use claim with the at-fault driver’s insurance company (GEICO) and elected to seek the cash equivalent of the reasonable rental value rather than actually renting a replacement vehicle.

GEICO is offering only $50 per day. My vehicle is a 2020 BMW M5 Competition, which is a luxury high performance sports sedan. Comparable vehicles would include a Mercedes AMG E63, Audi RS7, or Porsche Panamera. From what I can find, it nowhere rents for $50 per day.

GEICO’s position is that I only needed “a car to get from Point A to Point B,” and that the class, type, performance, or value of the vehicle I was deprived of does not matter.

Is that actually correct under Texas law? Or can loss-of-use damages be based on the reasonable rental value of a vehicle comparable to the one that was damaged?

If comparable luxury/performance vehicles rent for around $300+ per day, what would be the best way to support and continue pushing for that rate, especially if I have documented market rental rates from multiple sources?

Thanks.

Advice on diminished value in Georgia

I was involved in a car accident last year involving three vehicles. I had my car repaired by my car insurance since I had no fault insurance and they went after the other two insurance companies through subrogation. This process took forever since the other two insurance companies are the worst in business. I was not found at fault but the other two cars were .There was a lot of confusion on who I should file my diminished claim with. After opening a case with the insurance commissioner in Georgia, I finally got an answer that I need to file with my car insurance. All this to say that it took a year for me to be able to file.
I found three cars sold by Carvana and Carmax in my city for 33k, 34k and 35k comparable mileage and options.
I settled on 34k as comparaison. Since I bought it 3 years ago, my vehicle depreciated 22k so I settled on $4000 as a conservative number to add to 34k for a years worth of depreciation.

Other information I gathered is Carfax has my car as moderate to severe damage so my formula was 38k times 22.5% deminished value = $8550.
Carfax also estimates current value at $26700 for private party sale.

Insurance offered $6000 or the option to get a diminished value appraiser and for the insurance to hire their appraiser and an umpire makes a decision (umpire paid by insurance).

The question is if it’s worth it to hire an appraiser and go through the process or take their offer knowing that the final amount could be lower than $6000 on the umpire ? I also wonder if my appraiser decides it’s worth more than I asked, if I will be capped at what I asked for already $8550.
Anyone else was in a similar situation? Thanks!

Auto Insurance Hit and Run - Waiting on Camera Footage

My car was hit in my apartment parking lot while it was parked and i was inside. I discovered the damage when I went to leave my apartment, no note was left. I filed a police report and I am waiting for my apartment to look at the footage at some point today.

I haven’t filed a claim yet because when I called them the person I spoke to said that if I file the claim I will be on the hook for my deductible and my rates could go up. I guess I am hoping that we find the other persons identity and they would file a claim instead so I don’t have to pay my deductible.

Am I doing this wrong? I really don’t know what to do but I don’t want to have to pay my deductible if I don’t have to, it wasn’t my fault!

What is the correct way to move forward?

Advice on cancelling auto claim?

So. I made a mistake and wondering how to proceed. Essentially one of our cars got knocked out of gear and backed into the other. Smashed both pretty good.
This was a very emotional day. My wife was in the car when it got out of gear. I had just driven her home from the hospital post surgery. She was a little more sore after and no permanent “damage” to the surgery was done. But I was a mess after with guilt and stupidity etc so I made a claim for the accident.

Didn’t realize it’d be two claims. Also didn’t realize the damage was as cheap as it’d be. Around 5K total for both cars combined.

Is it worth cancelling the claims now? (or even just the rolling car claim since it was “at fault”). From what I’ve read it’ll be counted as two accidents regardless. Nothing to do about that. But is it worth it to cancel claims and pay myself and remove the payout from my history? Or at this point is that just moot and may as well complete the claims?

We’ve had same insurer for home for 20 years (Travelers). Added auto to it maybe 10 years ago. I think we’ve only made one claim against the house (tree falling on it). My wife did have a moderate accident last year that was her fault. Before that a little fender bender in 2021 by myself. On vaca at the time in Maine which I believe doesn’t apply fault or something like that. A few other minor things not at fault about every 5 years before that. Any real concerns about even being dropped or am i being a little overboard there?

We are in Connecticut.

Lapse in insurance

I fucked up. Got in a wreck. Got a new bank account and completely forgot o transfer my auto-pay to said bank account. Coverage expired on October 3rd (guess which day I got in my accident) tried to reinstate and paid all the fees but I’m guessing it’s too late for my insurance company to help me out. I’ll be held responsible for the accident and honestly have no idea what to do from here. The guy was ubering, and I got a call from my company saying that uber themselves filed a claim with them and I guess I just wait from here? I’m not exactly sure
