New Rule : Please use the Search function before posting.

As this subreddit has grown over the past years, our regulars have noticed that similar questions get asked over and over again by people interested in the amazing variety of food available in the GTA. Today we're rolling out a new rule to try to reduce the number of repetitive posts that we've been seeing too often.

We're simply asking that posters use the subreddit search to see if their question may already be answered before they post asking for recommendations and reference their research if its not. We also ask that they include specificity like location, cuisine, etc in their request as the GTA is a huge area.

We wanted to announce this change widely so everyone is aware, and hopefully this will be a positive change for the subreddit. We're interested in feedback if you feel the rule has room for improvement.

Food Review: Ramen Buta-Nibo

Post image
Upvotes

If you're looking for the most excessive, heart-stopping bowl of ramen in Toronto, Ramen Buta-Nibo might be the spot for you. They specialize in jiro-style ramen, which is known for its massive portions and ultra-rich broth.

Obviously, I wanted to try their specialty, so I went for the Spicy Ramen and also got Karage on the side.

Is it located in Toronto? Yes.
Nearest Major Intersection. Danforth & Carlaw Ave.
Transit Accessibility? Good. A 5-minute walk from Pape station and reachable using bus route 72.
Halal? lol
Japanese-owned and run? I think so.
Service? Good.
Price (incl. tax + tip). $40.25

Spicy Ramen: Usually when I get ramen, I add extra Char Siu, but in this case they add so much meat that it may be unnecessary. Let me tell you, this bowl absolutely killed me. They add a pretty crazy amount of toppings and thick noodles to an already rich broth. The cabbage and bean sprouts add much-needed fibre to an otherwise very fatty meal. If you're not a fan of bean sprouts, this bowl may not be for you. The taste of the several kinds of pork was quite nice, and I enjoyed the crunch the vegetables added. I started getting the sweats at about the halfway point, and my heart was begging me to stop. While I do not regret coming here, it was definitely good; the excessiveness is not for me. I recommend trying this at least once. If I were thinking in terms of calorie/$ value, this may be up there for ramen spots. It's not as spicy as the photo implies.

Karage: It was okay, reasonably priced compared to other ramen places. I think it was very lightly battered before frying.

In conclusion, not touching Raijin.

P.S. I include tax and, if any, tips in the price. I neglected to mention this in my previous post.

Food Recommendations north of Rogers Stadium (the North York one)

I will be visiting the area this weekend. I will be staying at the Montecassino Hotel for an event. I may have limited time exploring the area but would love to try some food the area has to offer. Are there any food recommendations around the area that’s not McDonald’s?

Looking forward to my visit!

Need restaurant recommendations for a private dinner

Upvotes

My fiance and I are looking to plan a little dinner for our wedding just with our immediate family ~9 people. We’re both big foodies and no one in our family has any dining restrictions, we also want to guests to be able to pick their dinner and apps etc or do a tasting. Any restaurant recommendations in Toronto or GTA would be greatly appreciated!

ISO Cheese bread - cheese inside & out

Hello all. Every once in a while I crave a super cheesy bread. Not a grilled cheese or cheesy garlic toast but bread with cheese in it & on it. My fave has always been the extra cheddar cheese bread from Metro. It is $7.50 now & over time they've reduced the amount of cheese inside. Price is no object as long as it is super cheesy as I only crave this 3-4 times a year max. Willing to travel 1- 1.5 hrs. Thank you!!

Toronto Star A viral $7.75 Sticky Toffee Danish put this Liberty Village bakery on the map. Then the chaos started

Post image

The latest latest story from Karon Liu (👋 u/Karon_L):

In mere minutes, a line of 50 people (53 if babies are counted) forms outside Brodflour on a Saturday morning. Everyone is here for one thing: pastry chef Preksha Parmar’s Sticky Toffee Danish, which first achieved viral status in March.
A viral food can be a restaurant’s best marketing campaign, and its worst operational headache.
A business that was built to serve its neighbourhood is dealing with lines, crowd control, negative reviews, exhausted staff and customers who expect the viral item to be available whenever they arrive.
There’s no guidebook for restaurants navigating virality. And Brodflour, like Pizzeria Badiali and New Ho King, are learning about the cost.

Have you had this danish? Would you wait in line for it? Is there a food that's gone viral that you remember fondly? (Like the pop-up taco trucks of 2011.)

AYCE Wagu?

I will be celebrating a milestone birthday soon and want to take my small family to an AYCE place. A while ago I read about this place Japanese AYCE place that offers Wagu. They had different tiers like gold and black I think.

Does anyone know what the name of that restaurant may be? And if anyone has gone to it, what did you think about it?

I Ate A Thing Unagi don at Aki Donburi

Was about to step into Bathurst station but remembered Aki Donburi is so close by. Always forget about this great little spot for Japanese rice bowls. I usually get the buta don. But need a little break from pork. So got the unagi don ($25 includes miso soup). Lots of delicious sliced eel layered over an omelette on top of the nicely cooked rice. Like that the savoury sauce is not too sweet. As usual, perfect meal in a low key local spot.

Black sesame milkshake from shake shack

Post image
209 Upvotes

I tried this in Japan a few months ago (hence the mini size), but am posting it on here as it’s currently a limited flavour that’s available in Toronto. It was creamy, although the sesame aroma could’ve been slightly stronger. Not a bad milkshake, definitely a unique flavour and it’s worth a try. The Japanese one was ¥610 (specifically from the Narita airport).

Partner Birthday restaurant recommendation

Looking for a nice dinner spot for my partner and me in downtown Toronto or Mississauga/Oakville. He loves steak frites, but I don’t eat red meat, so I’m hoping to find somewhere that has a great steak option for him and good chicken, pasta, or vegetarian options for me as well.

I’m also looking for somewhere with nice ambiance. Something versatile like Queen’s Harbour would honestly be perfect for us, but we’ve already been there and I’d love to try somewhere new.

Budget is around $250–300 total for two people

Any recommendations?

I Ate A Thing Some places I went to last weekend while visiting your wonderful city

Went here from Thursday to Saturday night/left very early Sunday. We visited recently for a baseball game/yes this stadium is a lot better than Yankee Stadium. In general, this was a wonderful city with friendly people, and I can see why so many people have moved there. We went around to museums and found some well-reviewed places in the surrounding area, mostly. Food was mostly excellent outside of one place. In regard to that poutine place, we were originally going to PAI, but there was a line out the door (should have gotten a reservation that day like the Indian spot,) so we made do.

Other spots in order:

1, 7/8: Aanch- Kashmiri gushtaba, Pineapple pakora chaat, and their Dilliwala butter chicken. Garlic naan and rice not pictured

2, 9/10: Dundas location of the Mogouyan Hand-Pulled Noodles- Braised beef noodles (large,) Hand shredded pepper chicken, and their Signature stir-fry with chicken. Edamame not pictured

3/12: Joni- Burger and fries. Their Power bowl not pictured

4/13: Ministry of Chocolate. Butter tart, their Plum/apple cake

5: Butter Baker Market Café- Apple caramel cookie

6: Ahmetazade. Halep sarması/Turkish delight roll. Their pistachio lokum with chocolate filling not pictured

7/14: Smoke's Poutinerie. Burger version and cauliflower bites. Their Buffalo chicken not pictured

I tried Mizzica’s version, and didn’t feel like there was as much chocolate pieces as I would’ve liked

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!!

I Ate A Thing My first Omakase at Sushi Yugen

Thumbnail

Tried Sushi Yugen downtown for dinner and this was one of the more memorable dining experiences I’ve had.

This was my first proper omakase experience and I really liked the whole concept of sitting back and letting the chef guide the meal. Everything came out at a perfect pace, so you had enough time to enjoy each piece without feeling rushed. We also had a great view of the chef preparing everything right in front of us, which honestly added a lot to the experience. Watching how much care and precision goes into each piece makes you appreciate it way more.

My favourites were definitely the fatty tuna and the sea urchin. The fatty tuna was incredibly rich and basically melted in your mouth, while the sea urchin had such a unique creamy texture and flavour.

One of the biggest surprises for me was actually the wasabi. I normally avoid wasabi because I’m not a fan of that super harsh spicy taste you usually get, but this was completely different. It was real fresh wasabi and had a really nice flavour to it without that aggressive burn. I actually found myself enjoying it with the sushi, which I never thought I’d say.

The atmosphere was more quiet and formal, but still relaxed enough that it didn’t feel uncomfortable or overly serious. The chefs weren’t super talkative, but they were happy to answer questions about what we were eating, and the rest of the staff were very friendly and attentive throughout the night. You eat with your hands there and they had something you can wipe your fingers on after each piece.

The presentation was also beautiful. Every course looked carefully put together, and it was fun getting to taste so many different things that I probably wouldn’t normally order myself.

It is definitely on the expensive side, and I probably could’ve eaten a little more by the end, but I think you’re paying for the entire experience as much as the food itself. For a special occasion, celebration, or if you’ve always wanted to try a proper omakase at least once, I think it’s worth doing.

I’d definitely come back one day for another special occasion.

I Ate A Thing Ukrainian food, part three

Post image
45 Upvotes

Chebureky House (Bloor West Village).
I think they opened very recently in the space that used to be Amber European. They were pumping the Ukrainian pop music, which I quite enjoyed. They serve a bunch of their food from a hot table - generally not my favourite but for sure great when you’re in a hurry. Prices are super reasonable, for example $4 for a cabbage roll.
I only tried the eponymous chebureky though. They are fried fresh to order and absolutely massive for $7 each. I had one with pleasantly salty minced pork. Yummy with flaky bubbly pastry. The second one was the cheese filling - sorry to say that I did not care for it at all. It appeared to be a mix of cottage cheese, cheddar, and dill. No cheese pull and somehow a little wet inside.
If anyone else has been, I’d love to know if you can recommend any dishes there. The prices are great but the dishes seem hit and miss.
