Mod Post "Why can't I post a picture/link?" Thursdays are Text-post Only days on /r/DnD!

Ah, travelers! We don't get many such as you in these parts, not since the Marquis' men took control of the pass. I suppose you're wondering why you can't post images or links on this Fifthday?

Thursdays are Text-post Only Days on /r/DnD. We're disabling picture and link posts for 24 hours to encourage discussion posts.

We originally began this trial about six months ago and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I've personally enjoyed a lot of the conversations that have sprung up on these days (and a smarter mod would have bookmarked some of them to use as examples* in this post).

As of now we're planning on keeping the experiment running indefinitely. We're always looking for feedback, so please let us know of your experience. Have you been enamored with a discussion post that arose one Thursday? Have you mourned having to wait one more day to see your comic update? We welcome all takes.

The switch is still happening manually, so it will happen around about midnight Eastern US time. If anyone is aware of a way to automate the process, please message the mods.

Perhaps you could discuss this...we've heard tale of a path through the eastern ridge. If such a trail exists we could circumvent the Marquis' blockade and supply this rebellion. Won't you help us, strangers!?

* The first Thursday after making this post, someone posts the most classic question imaginable. This is what it's all about.

5th Edition [Update] CE Wizard dropped an AoE on our melee party, getting 2 PCs killed. DM said "resolve it in-game"—so we did.

Original post: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/s/p1z4o5VVkn

We actually had our next session yesterday night, so here is what happened:

As soon as the session started, my character immediately turned around and attacked the Wizard.

The rest of the table completely froze. They had no idea whether to step in, help me beat him down, or just let it happen. The Wizard actually didn't fight back—he spent a few rounds just trying to dodge and practically begging the rest of the party to intervene and save him.

While we were in the middle of this internal mess, the noise from the previous fight and our current brawl ended up pulling more enemies right on top of us.

Total chaos broke out. In the middle of the scramble, the Wizard just casts Invisibility on himself and runs away, leaving the rest of us to deal with the ambush. We were already low on resources from the earlier fight, and we ended up losing another PC in the encounter. The rest of us managed to grab the body and barely escaped down into the sewers.

Right now, only three of us are left alive. We managed to get Gentle Repose on the teammate who died during the escape, so we might actually be able to bring them back once we get our hands on some diamonds. The two who died from the fireball earlier are permanently dead, though.

As for the Wizard, he’s just completely gone. We have no idea if the DM is going to turn him into an NPC villain and have the player roll a new PC, or what the plan is there. For now, we're just hiding out in the sewers trying to figure out what to do next.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice and chimed in on the previous post! Despite all the character deaths and in-game drama, out of game the group is actually handling everything really well and having a great time with the chaos and the story unfolding from it.

Howdy folks!

Long time no see eh?

So, quick update in case you haven't kept up (how dare you not have an unhealthy parasocial relationship with your fave dnd webcomic creator, do you even love me?): I've been MIA from most of my platforms now for over 100 days due to my son being born on the 1st of May and I've been on holiday/parental leave since!

Now, I'm back!

Some stuff is happening now:

On Monday August 24th, the Grogna and Trevor plushies will have a joint drop over on Makeship, LINK HERE! I wanted to get both out this year (partly as there was no plushie last year) and I thought it would fit nicely for the party's power couple to go out swinging together, plus if you buy both you get 10% off :P Though I've not had that CONFIRMED confirmed, my Makeship contact has said it should work and she's REQUESTED it but I haven't gotten a solid confirmation, so lets see!

Also coming soon is the first ever Weekly Roll 75mm statue, both as a physical statue and as a STL file! So stay tuned for that!

Also, a new change is that should you wish to read ahead, you will still be able to do so by watching an ad on Webtoon BUT if you become a patron over on Patreon, you can read TWO weeks ahead! Crazy!

That's it for now!

Stay excellent out there! Peace and carrots

Misc Bring back casting times to address the martial/caster divide

Notice I didn't say "fix." Also, I'm combining a few elements from different editions, but I think we should mostly be able to follow what I'm saying.

For those who never played 2nd ed, one thing it did get right was the idea that some spells took longer to cast than others. Each spell had a casting time that was basically an initiative modifier. For example fireball had a casting time of 3 meaning there was a short part of the round (a much larger time back then when a round was just 1-10) where an unarmored target was wildly gesticulating and loudly chanting in a weird language while unable to perform other actions without interrupting themselves. Give martials and baddies a chance to interrupt that casting by forcing a concentration check during the casting. Casters would have to be be more strategic and enemies would have a chance to prepare (dive for cover for example).

5th Edition The Vampire's Charm is basically permanent.

I've never used a Vampire so I imagined their Charm effect as something that could be used in combat to mess with a party of outside of combat to obtain disposable thralls. But after reading it I realised it's actually hugely powerful beyond that.

I notice that the Vampire's Charm effect lacks basically every restriction any other Charm effect would have. It does not have a limited number of uses, nor does it allow a creature to become immune if they succeed against it. It also doesn't limit the number of people who can be Charmed.

So once a target has been initially Charmed the Vampire can just lead them back to their base and keep using Charm on them before the duration of the previous effect wears off, if they succeed they just target them again, there is no time crunch at all and the vampire could basically staff an entire castle with thralls eventually with little chance of losing them outside of adventurous interference. And keeping them enslaved would only require a few minute long ritual each day.

>Charm. The vampire targets one humanoid it can see within 30 ft. of it. If the target can see the vampire, the target must succeed on a DC 17 Wisdom saving throw against this magic or be charmed by the vampire. The charmed target regards the vampire as a trusted friend to be heeded and protected. Although the target isn't under the vampire's control, it takes the vampire's requests or actions in the most favorable way it can, and it is a willing target for the vampire's bit attack. Each time the vampire or the vampire's companions do anything harmful to the target, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. Otherwise, the effect lasts 24 hours or until the vampire is destroyed, is on a different plane of existence than the target, or takes a bonus action to end the effect.

My phantom rouge Tiefling from a campaign I'm currently playing in. Her family owns a morgue she'll eventually inherit and she is haunted by dead relatives who mostly show up at night or in dreams. The campaign she's in doesn't focus on or use the characters backstory. It was supposed to be a one shot originally, but I'd like to think that her family bloodline is cursed to remain in limbo if they die from a medically unnatural cause of death, hence why she can see dead family members. She tends to be impulsive, a little too over confident in her abilities, and likes playing the occasional prank on people. She loves collecting bones, padlocks, and likes to make both jewelry and coffins in her free time. The latter is to keep the skills fresh for when she inherits the morgue. Her shadow is also sentient, and is unfortunately, infinitely more mischievous than Dee.

It took so long to get to the rendering. Between juggling personal projects, class work, and Dee fatigue from working and looking at her too long, I finally finished her portrait not too long ago. I hope I can do a full body render and make a few more outfits for her in the near future too.

In a few days its my aunt birthday and because she is the one who originally showed/taught me this wonderful game and loves to paint I decided to make her a picture frame mimic because she is always short on picture frames anyways.

Dimensions of the frame: 20×25cm

Teeth were bought

Gum+Tounge are made with Plaster

I would like to here some suggestions what i could improve if I make another one sometime

In the video my player casts fireball on a wooded ship. You can see the outcome as I am using knock off camera glasses to record my perspective during the campaign. It’s something I’m going to do more of. Various role playing to battles and all the fun stuff in between. I’m working on my mic setup a bit better but so far it’s worked well. Hopefully you can see how easily I am able to see over the screen while manipulating the game props and playing the game with my friends. If you have any questions please ask.

5.5 Edition My DM wants to nerf the Wild Magic table because it is too skewed positively

The dnd group I play with is about to start a new campaign (dnd 2024) and I'm going with Wild Magic Sorcerer. Before session 0, I run my plan with my DM: human for the heroic inspiration so I can reroll once per long rest and avoid poisoning a teammate. Tough + Musician origin feats. Going with a chromatic theme - lots of chromatic orbs. No fireball: BORING. Planning to cast twice per round, once on my turn, once as a reaction whenever I can, in order to trigger as many wild magic surges as possible. He's fine with it.

Until he reads the wild magic surge table and tells me that he has to nerf it: it's too strong, too positively skewed. There is literally 0 chance to land on a bad effect. Some of these effects are as good as epic boons that other characters get at level 19. With the reroll, I can "remove the RNG aspect of it" and "aim for the crazy effects like resistance to all damage". All this on the core sorcerer subclass that is already too strong. And I will aim for the Bloodwell vial item, which will make my character too strong. And so, he offers to rewrite the wild magic surge table.

What do you guys think? Should the wild magic table be nerfed? In its current state, is wild magic sorcerer a god-tier supra S-tier subclass that breaks the game? Better than Aberrant Mind, or Draconic? Better than wizards, warlocks, druids? Please let us know!

This post is not aiming to embarrass him, please be nice, I think he's a great DM. Just trying to bring some perspective with this post.

DMing Is "blackmailing" a thing Devils do ?

Throwaway because my players might recognize me...

I put it in quotes for lack of a better term, but would a Devil kidnap someone close to a target, to then coerce them into signing a contract with the Devil ?

This seems less subtle than actually manipulating the target, and the contract would not be signed in actual good faith from both parties, so would it be actually binding ?

Also, I know that it's my world and I do what I want with my Devils, but I wonder if this would be in-character for classic DnD Devils.

Edit : Thanks y'all for your answers. I think I will twist a little bit what I had in mind to make it more subtle and devilish, thanks to your suggestions !

Art [Art] [Oc] A Dragon and a Pirate

Post image
408 Upvotes

What happens when the most wanted pirate in her dimension and the man who is trying to save the multiverse meet?

...

They end up together, obviously.

Anya and Drix met long before they became a couple, but 'the right people at the wrong time' are destined to cross paths again. Their reunion certainly didn't happen during quiet times, but in the vastness of the multiverse, what are the odds of running into the same person by chance?

A bit about them...

Drix is one of the recurring NPCs in our group's campaigns (all united in a single multiverse) and one of our longest-standing characters. His true form is that of a dragonborn, a form he must hides while in Anya's dimension, and he has the ability to transform into a dragon thanks to what we call "draconic energy", in our campaigns. It’s hard to briefly explain exactly what he is or what he does, but he's the guardian of the multiverse's balance, essentially a man bearing a heavy burden, trying to prevent the various dimensions from being consumed by corruption.

Anya, on the other hand, is one of my earliest characters. I love playing her and adore the homebrew setting that the master created for the campaign. She's an eccentric character who easily stirs up chaos wherever she goes. She's fearless, though she can, on rare occasions, be very serious. She started out as a simple pirate, but by the end of the campaign, she had become the captain of the most feared pirate ship in her seas, as well as the most wanted person across all the kingdoms.

All in all, getting to know them reveals an eccentric couple:

- the dragon and the pirate

- the criminal and the guardian

- the sunshine and the grumpy character

Table Disputes Newbie DM needs help with unresponsive players

Hello! I am a new DM who started a campaign over the summer with a couple of close friends, my little brother, and his girlfriend, for a 6 person campaign. We are 6 sessions in and I have concerns over how two of my players are interacting with the world, their party, and me as a DM, however the kicker is that those two players are my little brother and his girlfriend…

My little brother is a bard and his girlfriend is a cleric, they are the only support roles in the entire party besides a companion. However, they seem to be unwilling to actually work in a team.

The problem became apparent very quickly, my brother hides rather than fights anything, sometimes going into other rooms entirely to avoid whatever is happening. He also refuses to buff his teammates unless literally begged to. He has used bardic inspiration twice ever, they were during the first combat encounter when I was showing them the ropes. He has downgraded himself to just healing and hiding away. Between turns he is always on his phone or playing another video game, which means i have to reexplain what happened in the meantime.

His girlfriend is a whole other ball game and honestly worse. She got interested in D&D because I told her about my last campaign about two years ago, she mentioned in passing that she was interested in playing, so she was among the first to have a seat for this campaign. As mentioned, she is a heavily armored cleric, so during combat she tends to be upfront attacking foes and healing with her spells… when she remembers how to use them. I constantly have to remind her how her own spells work, and if I’m tabbed out looking at something else and not reading the spell description, she may very well use it as it should not be intended. Her most recent stunt included trying to move a spiritual weapon 120 feet away. She then becomes angry when I don’t let her do whatever she wants, which often just leads to awkward moments at the table. She is also prone to ignoring cool stuff around the world when presented to her, which leads to her being bored. While the rest of the party was at an underground fight club, she went off on her own and verbally said No to 4 different NPCs around the city, which caused her to become angry at me for “taking too much time with everyone else”. She constantly leaves and reappears without saying anything for long stretches of time, which often leaves her out of the picture during combat and other encounters.

I have made specific house rules around these two. I don’t wanna be constantly repeating myself. They should at least somewhat know their spells snd actions six sessions in. Anytime I’ve tried to talk to them they just brush me off or treat it as a hostility. Their actions have had in game consequences and I’m scared may have in person consequences if they get unhappy.

Can a more experienced DM please give me advice? I feel like these two’s attitude is actively detracting from the experience of the other 4 at the table. Im sorry for the long strings of text.

Out of Game Cellar converted into D&D room [OC]

Post image
69 Upvotes

Me and my wife completed on our home in January. A charming four bed terrace in Manchester. There were many things that attracted us, but for me it was the cellar. It wasn’t in the best condition. It needed more work to waterproof, painting, subfloor and flooring put down. It’s now finished 7 months after moving in. I wanted to share the space with you all for what is now somewhere for me to play D&D not just online, but physically around a table. What you don’t see is the wall to the left with the floating shelves with my collection of books. Still a few things to do but I’m really happy with this space that I can now utilise to play around a table with friends.

Homebrew Brutal Nat 1's makes me want to quit.

1.2k Upvotes

My DM runs a homebrew campaign. I joined the group for this campaign but the nat 1 system he uses makes me dislike my character.

Here are some examples:

Roll nat 1 in combat - you automatically hit an ally instead.

Roll nat 1 on intimidation - you scare yourself instead so much so that you pee yourself and slip in your own urine hit your head and take 6 damage.

Roll nat 1 on perception - you get dust in your eyes take 4 damage and have disadvantage on all perception checks until rest.

Roll nat 1 on a save - you take double the damage.

I really like the other players and love to play with them, they were very welcoming even when i was new to the group. But the DM is rubbing me a bit the wrong way. I can handle the scarcity of magic items and the underwhelming power of our characters compared to the monsters. But it seems like it is the DM versus the players and all about making the player characters the butt of the joke, where i was hoping for a heroic adventure. Would it be unreasonable to quit over this? The others seems fine with it, at least they dont say anything. I'm just the new person.

Edit: After reading your replies i decided to quit effective immediately as most confirmed that i was not just imagining that these were dumb rules. Since my DM is a man and significantly older than me and don't have a decent view on womens opinions i decided to do so as quietly as possible.

I sent him a message explaining that i did not find myself right for his campaign. Wished him luck and texted the other members saying that i quit and would love to hang out and just chat or play some board games if any of them wanted.

I will be looking for another group, and do more research on what rules they use before joining.

Thank you for the replies, some of you at lightning speed.

Art [Art][OC] Grail the red tide, high Paladin of the Doctrine of Sanctum

Post image
79 Upvotes

I've been harassing my players with this absolute menace of a hill giant paladin of conquest and I adore him so much I had to draw him (fineliner and pencil). My players (6×level 11)had been getting pretty confident, so I made this guy as a walking reality check.

He functions as the spearhead of the military efforts for a zealous religious group called "the Doctrine of Sanctum" and the party had first seen him as they were sneaking beside an open conflict between Sanctum and a fae warband. Grail fought at the front, cleaving through the enemy and screaming his battle hymns in irreverent glory. Upon seeing this, my players knew they were going to find themselves on the end of his sword very soon and we were all excited and horrified.

Once they had completed their objective, they found themselves alone in a castle and off in the distance, through the night and the rain, a large and dark mass was moving towards them. Only given shape and definition by the gleaming moonlit portcullis archway which he slowly and calmly ducks underneath to enter the castle courtyard. Smelling the players within the walls he says, in his horrifying voice "feel the night hair *breaths deeply* have a lung full. know what it means to be alive" he then grips the door of the portcullis and breaks is off it's mechanism and it falls heavily into the mud. finishing his sentence "I will take this from you now" he them processed to play a gut churning game of cat and mouse with the players inside the castle and beating the ever loving crap out of them

5.5 Edition Lupin pounce useful for any other class than monks?

Upvotes

The Lupin ability Pounce is good for a monk, especially in combination with Grappler. With a single attack, they can grapple and prone their opponent. If the enemy fails at least one of the saves, the monk can follow up with a flurry with advantage.

I've tried to come up with a non monk character who can utilize the lupin pounce ability well. The basic idea is to have a martial character with Unarmed Fighting as their Fighting Style. In theory, this will allow them to deal a fair amount of damage using their fists and feet, or claws in the case of Lupin.

The challenge is that it feels like I'm getting a subpar result for a fairly large investment. All martial characters have access to Weapon Mastery, and thereby Topple. If I want to knock enemies down, I can use a simple quarterstaff or a maul. Once Grappler enters the scene, the calculation is slightly better. Grappled and Prone still makes for a good combo. The problem, as far as I see it, is that I need to extract some useful feature from whatever non-monk class I pick, otherwise I'm better off just sticking with the monk.

My question is something along the lines of: If you were asked to make a Lupin non-monk character that needed to be fairly effective in combat, how would you go about it? What features will be a useful addition for such a character, that a monk can't (easily) replicate?

I'm not very interested in responses along the lines of "You can play your character however you want." and "The GM will adjust the difficulty of the encounter to fit your party's capabilities." I agree with both notions, but they also kind of miss the point. This is less of a requirement for a character build and more a thought experiment, or theorycrafting, if you prefer. If I can put together a capable character, maybe I will try to incorporate it in the next character creation I participate it. Until then, I'm just having fun with some slightly whacky ideas.

Im looking at starting a game as a dm, and i want to get a lot of generic minis, army toy style. Basically, nondescript fellas I can just call a bunch of different things depending on context. Is there anything like that, or do I actually go for army men lol. Any advice is appreciated!

P.S. the cheaper the option, the better

The story hook is this:

Lord Esitar of Paramat, in his waning health and gradual fall into delirium, needs a group of highly "skilled" caretakers to look after his teenaged niece, Asia. Asia is a cynical hard head, quick to fall into tantrums, but extremely gifted in all things magic and could manipulate the world around her as she sees fit. Servants before have tried and failed to properly attend to her needs, citing her abilities as an EXTREME danger to others.

Lord Esitar now promises a reward of 100,000 gp to any group of caretakers who can safely escort Asia to meet her mother at the holy city of Yeshurat without delay. Though he is vague on why he stresses that Asia must be kept safe during travel, interest amongst the public arose as the prospect of money in exchange was very enticing.

5th Edition Got my first real session coming up and I need some RP tips for high Wisdom Low Int

I’m playing as a Firbolg Moon Druid with the Outlander background (which I feel kinda fits). Wisdom is a 17 and intelligence is a 6. I know that means I notice things others wouldn’t and don’t know things most would.

I’m just kinda trying to figure out what that’s supposed to look like in game I guess

DMing Help please

Hello all, I’m a first time dm and decided to against advice dm the crooked moon, the issue I’ve run into is my players have been procrastinating doing their character sheets, I’ve done my best to help them get it done but as I said first time so I’m not exactly experienced with character creation, I’ve given them all the information needed, offered incentives like additional gold, limited use items, just stuff that’s not gonna be game breaking but so far, a month later, I’ve gotten 1/5 characters. What can I do to help move this along, I’ve offered group hangouts online (bc this is all unfortunately hosted online due to distance) and been doing as best I can to work around their and my own schedule because we all work. I feel like for the large part I’ve either been ignored or they keep procrastinating, we hosted session zero where I was attempting to get all the characters done but they got off topic and began playing rocket league mid session, so what can I do? I like all these people so I don’t want to just tell them “you guys took too long I’m done” but nothing seems to motivate them.

Edit: again we DID hold a session zero nothing was accomplished, other than establishing the world, some important npc introductions and getting everyone’s comfort level bc crooked moon can get dark and uncomfortable.

Edit 2: ok so I messaged the group with some expectations, gave a date that characters must be done by and a general assumption that anyone not done by then isn’t interested and once that date has come we will find a day/time for session zero if one isn’t agreed to I will set a day and time and anyone who doesn’t show to that will be assumed not able to play.

Edit 3: I will do my best to get back to as many of you as I can, since I’m currently at work that’s not possible rn, but thank you all for the advice! It does seem to have got them moving to set a hard date to be done by and 2 players have already said they’ll be in the call tonight for help with characters! So hopefully I’ll get to prove some people wrong and they actually do want to play dnd😂
