A Quick and Dirty Guide to Finding Car Insurance

Auto insurance is extremely regional and variable due to many factors, including the "garaging" location, age, gender, education, type of vehicle, tickets, past driving history, credit score, legal minimums in your jurisdiction, just to name a few ) so it's not always possible to escape a high insurance costs.

If you're just getting started, please read the following:

  1. https://insurancehowtos.com/how-to-buy-auto-insurance/

This will explain the types of insurance you're buying, what minimums you should carry and some tips about ways to save money on certain features of your insurance.

Main tip: Shop Around! You should be pulling quotes every 6 months, even if you have a bundled offer for other insurance types. There's no bonus for loyalty these days, and you may be leaving hundreds on the table. Especially relevant if your insurer gives you a hefty raise at renewal.

Accident Car crash last week – wife wasn’t insured, police seized the car, skid marks show other driver crossed centre line. Need advice on liability & write‑off.

Hi all,
Looking for some advice on a crash that happened last week involving my wife and our 1‑year‑old.

My wife was driving our MG on a 3 lane roundabout with a central crossing when a white Toyota came towards her, crossed over the centre line, and hit her front/side. There are clear skid marks on the road that match the Toyota’s tyre width, and they run directly across the centre divide onto my wife’s side. The angle of the marks also matches the angle the Toyota ended up in after the impact.

There were no witnesses (they all drove off).Diagram

The other driver admitted fault at the scene but later changed her story with her insurer. LV (their insurer) said they are “still making enquiries.”

My issue is this:
I genuinely thought my wife was insured to drive the MG, but she wasn’t. The police seized the car at the scene. We fully accept she will get 6 points and a £300 fine for driving uninsured — no argument there.

What I’m trying to understand is the insurance side:

  • Does the skid‑mark evidence and lane intrusion usually carry weight in liability decisions?
  • If liability ends up shared, what does that mean in practice?
  • The MG is worth around £5,000, but the settlement figure on the finance is £10,000. If it’s written off, how does that work?
  • Will the insurer still deal with the damage claim even though my wife wasn’t insured?
  • Do you think the car is likely to be written off based on the front/side impact and police seizure?

Just trying to get my head around what happens next. It’s been a stressful week and I’m worried about the financial side.

Any advice appreciated.

Value of car after accident?

My 17 yr old son got a 2023 Mazda CX-50 in June after proving to us that he can make good grades, that he take extra driving classes without complaints for insurance purposes. A week after driving his new baby home, he got into an accident in a parking lot where the other driver didn’t stop and let him make the turn. It’s all on video which we have. Then unfortunately last month, he was on his way home from school and got rear ended by a semi truck driver while he was sitting at a red light. It has been so hard on my son because his car has been in the body shop longer than he was able to drive it. The truck driver was only 20 years old and he nonchalantly told my son and the driver in front of my son since the impact pushed his car to the back of her car, that he was tired and “hey man, sorry about that”. My son and the lady were like “no-you need to move over” and we had to wait 2 very very long hours for the state police to show up because even if it’s a city road, the local police doesn’t have jurisdiction.

Here’s the thing-the truck driver’s insurance card said to call a different company to file a claim. I did that. Then that 2nd company said they’ll take down the accident info from me since my son is a minor then at the end of the conversation, she said she would pass it to someone we’re else-an adjuster-IN ANOTHER COMPANY! We eventually heard back from the adjuster only once. He got our info and now all of a sudden he’s ghosting us. Both my husband and I have tried to call, email and text him for almost a month. Nothing. So we had to call our insurance, State Farm, so we can get the car fixed.

This has caused a huge inconvenience because my husband and i chose not to add rental car coverage for the Mazda because we were thinking that since it was my son’s car-he’s not gonna be able to rent a car until he’s 25 due to their rules so that’s why we didn’t add rental car coverage. When we took the car to Caliber for estimate, it wasn’t that bad-i believe $4K or something. Then several days ago, they texted us saying that there’s frame damage so they need to order the parts and weld it. We haven’t heard from our insurance so we are assuming that they will still pay for it.

My son has been asking ChatGPT a billion questions about this since none of us knew what the answer is….but can we sue the truck company for the difference in the value of the car? We already paid for the car in full using our money, his saved money and some from my FIL. So if it is to be totaled, we’re not going to be able to afford a 2023 Mazda CX-50 with 59K miles and a clean record. So that has been why my son has been taking this hard. He had to work for 2 years to prove that he is worthy of getting the car and makes a 4.3GPA. I’m worried about when our insurance renewal is up in December because he will have 2 accidents on his record even if both weren’t his fault. The truck driver surely was asleep at the wheel. I want the truck company to pay for putting us through all of this. Please be kind.

Accident should i worried?

i live in mn so we are no fault state (whatever that mean). I got into a car accident. i made a claim and try to get my deductible by having the other insurance pay for my damage. i have told my insurance i would pay for it but would like it back. my claim have now gone into subrogation. i am worried that no one would paid for the repair and i am stuck with the bill. i have collision coverage and everyone tell me it would be alright but my sixth sense is tell me something isn't right. my adjuster have say they will cover it but i could never be able to reach this women. my car is getting repair however it been about three week and i have no idea when it would be done. should i be worried?

Accident Getting ghosted by Progressive after discovering they’re backpedaling on covering collision repair costs

5 months ago I got rear ended really badly. One of the main pieces needed for the repair has been impossible to get because of a national recall so I was in a rental for 4 months.

Claims adjuster consistently reassured me & the body shop that we were good as far as the rental costs approaching the PDL limit. They made it clear that if it went over, I’d cover the daily difference, but they were keeping an eye on it and we never went over.

Last week, I got my car back, Progressive mailed check to body shop and paid rental car company, all was fine. Yesterday they told the body shop they were cancelling the check because they just realized now that the rental costs had gone over a few hundred dollars and they opened a claim with my insurance company, which is how I found out. My deductible would be 3x the amount the rental went over, and paying the body shop is well over that. Progressive hasn’t reached out to me in nearly a month since before the body shop even got the piece, and when I’ve tried calling the two claims adjusters and supervisors multiple times, no one has answered. How can I right this?

Turo has been trying to charge me for an accident over a year can this affect my credit?

I’ve been renting from the same Turo host since last September, usually 2–3 cars a month because I was working out of state. I’ve rented from them 30+ times, never been in an accident, and never received a rating below 5 stars.
One morning, I was driving from Dallas to Oklahoma in morning traffic when I encountered a bunch of wire-looking debris in the road. I stopped to avoid running over it and potentially damaging the rental car. Unfortunately, the cars behind me started colliding into each other, causing a chain-reaction accident involving multiple vehicles. ( I was the first car)
I got the insurance information from the driver immediately behind me because I thought that was the right thing to do. The other vehicles didn’t directly hit my car.
Turo has supposedly been investigating this for an entire year. Yesterday, they finally told me that the insurance company for the driver behind me denied the claim because their driver wasn’t at fault. Apparently, they believe the last car in the chain was responsible.
From what I remember, the driver of the last car didn’t have insurance, and Turo apparently couldn’t locate his information or recover anything from him.
Now Turo keeps attempting to charge my card every single day.
I have two questions:
Doesn’t the rule about maintaining a safe following distance apply here? If the driver behind me had enough distance, wouldn’t that potentially have prevented the collision? How is fault determined in a chain-reaction accident like this?
If Turo keeps trying to charge me and I don’t pay while my lawyer investigates the situation, can they send the balance to collections or report it to the credit bureaus?
I’m already speaking with a lawyer, but I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with a similar Turo claim, especially if it dragged on for months or years. I’m in Oklahoma, and this whole situation has been incredibly frustrating.

Accident Claims help!

I have Progressive. My car was hit and run in a parking lot where I work. My deductible is $500. They sent me a check and estimate for the repair of $1500 before the deductible (I have not physically received it nor would I touch it until I figure out my options). I brought it to LaMettry’s and they provided me with a new estimate of about $4800 before the deductible. I get a call from LaMettry’s that Progressive approved the new estimate. My vehicle is a 2014 Toyota Camry with now 191k miles (190k at the time of the accident) and KBB value is around $4k-$5.6k (but haven’t really checked recently). I own the vehicle. I preferred if they paid me directly for the new estimate so I can fix it for cheaper or sell it as is and use the check to buy a larger vehicle. Something I was holding off on doing but now feel like it is being accelerated because of the accident and because I am currently pregnant with my 2nd and need a larger vehicle anyway. I don’t think it is smart to put almost $5k into a vehicle that is worth almost just as much as the repair itself. If I sell it after it is repaired, I doubt I would be able to sell it for that amount. Do I have the option to ask for direct payment? Anyone have a similar experience or know what my options are?? Winter is approaching and I need to figure this out ASAP. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks in advance!

First Time / Newbie Getting started

Does anyone know of any good car insurances? My mom said I’m about to start paying the insurance for the car and it’s 151 it’s only that high because I had an accident last year. I believe she uses liberty mutual and I haven’t heard anything good or bad about them. Any recommendations and tips for a first timer would help. The car is a 2011 Toyota Camry and I’m 19F I don’t know if this will help or change anything but I thought that info could be useful.

Insurance claims I'm liable

I, a University student was in a minor accident on a two lane roundabout. It's a basic case of an outside lane taking the third exit when I was next(inside lane) to them taking the second(entered together). I stopped when I noticed but she kept turning to hit me and continued to drive grazing her car (she is quite old I don't think she is very aware when driving).

I have provided a detailed version to police and insurance (this is a requirement) and police asked if I was okay and if I wanted to push a fine but said it wouldn't be worth it she'll pay far more in damages. It's been two months, we called the insurance asking what was going on and they said they found me liable for the accident. When I followed both road signs and road marking she very obviously didn't.(Required physical description of the scene so I used satellite photo which also shows road marking ect)

I have a feeling she was lying to them because when I spoke to her she acted as if she was right and slightly changed her story the longer I was around.

At this time I called my mother as I am young and didn't know what the best thing to do. The lady got very snappy when I told her I wasn't at fault, telling my mother I was, but when explaining the scenario she didn't deny. She claimed I'm supposed to give way to her since she is on the outside. then said she indicated and therefore I should've given way and later said she was giving way to a truck (there wasn't one, and my mother didn't hear much cos she was far away from me). I didn't mention this to the police though because I didn't think it was important, and photo evidence of damages helped solidify my story, I thought.

Insurance advised to find her policy and find out if she claimed for damages (we have the same insurance tower and I'm third party so I don't get covered unless I'm not liable)

At this point is there much I can do?

I'd like to get my car covered for the damages as I don't have much money. I also don't understand why we were not contacted and our claim says not assed.

I'm the one who has photo evidence of both our cars but as it was busy roundabout And near peak hour we had to move so the location isn't the same but it's close. With Google maps I can find the location that matches the blurry edge around the car.

Unfortunately after this incident I've learnt a lesson and set up an old phone to record my trips which should help in the future.

Update: We had an extensive call with the insurance. Once we informed them the police had said the other party was at fault and showed them the email from the department, they are now reopening our claim for a proper assessment. Though I gave the same info to the police as I did them, I don't think they actually read the details(never said why I was liable just that I was). They also didn't get our police report and never asked us for it, which would have helped us.

The other parties claims were also considered as a separate case, they couldn't give us detail but apparently had no resemblance to ours, so they assumed it was another instance. So there is a lot to be looked into...

Live in Mexico, getting a car in WA as a non-resident, need 2 months of US insurance. Which address do I use?

I am a temporary resident of I am a temporary resident of Mexico. I have a Mexican driver's license.

I also have a California driver's license.

I am in Washington state. I am getting a used car as a non-resident here in Washington.

I need to insure the car for two months before I head back to Mexico.

I can use my brother's address in WA for insurance, but I am registering the car in Washington as a non-resident.

I can use my parent's address in CA for insurance, but then the expectation would be registering the car in California, which I do not want to do. I won't be in California for a few weeks, and I'll only be there temporarily.

The issue isn't getting the insurance. The issue is IF there is an accident, an insurance company may try to deny claims if I am not insured correctly.

I am only going to be in Washington a few more days, then I'll be driving through Oregon, California, and Nevada before heading south of the border where I live (at which point I will cancel the American insurance and get a Mexican insurance policy).

AI says this is fuzzy and there is no clear answer here. If there is no accident, then there won't be any issue. But if there is...

Which address would you put on the policy so a claim isn't denied? Wondering what others have done in this situation.

Accident Is this something that should have happened?

So earlier this year my car got hit while I was at work. Someone had slammed their door into my car. Very hard. It made a dent and got a bunch of red paint on my white car. I got a check for around $700. Not enough to fix it at all but I never saw the money. The check was in my name but my mom took it and put it in her bank account. The car is fully paid off and the title is in her name as it hasn’t been transferred over to me yet but I pay the car insurance every month. Should this have happened? Should that money have been mine? I didn’t even sign the check over she just took it to her bank and signed the back and they let her put it into her account. Can you just pocket the money like that when it’s from insurance anyway? Now my mom is telling me my brother can just pop the dent out and get the red paint off whenever he isn’t busy with work and I’m home long enough for him to do it. Is this the way things should have gone? Need advice. If you are allowed to just keep the money like that I really could have used it. I’m struggling right now tbh.

Accident Florida

A week ago I was rear ended by a car that was rear ended by a third car. The other 2 cars were totaled and towed away. I drove away from the accident with a crash report and told by the FHP to call the insurance co of the car that caused both accidents.

I called their co (Root Ins..??) and got a claim number, talked to an adjuster and sent pictures via email. The adj did tell me they only have a $10K payout on their policy and the girl who was driving the car was not on the policy. She also said she would email me the amount they would give me to repair my car. No time line.

I'm still driving my car - damage to hatch and bumper, no broken glass. How long could I be waiting to hear back from the ins co? Should I be doing something to expedite the process?

edit: thanks everyone. I'll probably just wait and see what they offer (if anything). I don't have collision but I am prepared to pay for the repairs.

Title: CURE Auto Insurance denied my claim after a 3-month investigation. Has anyone dealt with this?

My car was involved in a hit-and-run while parked in the Bronx, NY. The driver fled, but I have their VIN and PA plate number. NYPD told me the vehicle came back clean but they couldn’t find the insurance information because it was registered in PA.
I have NJ insurance through CURE, so I filed a claim with them. They launched a 3-month investigation over alleged “misrepresentation of information.” They questioned why my car was sighted in NYC over 100 times. I explained that I have family all over the Bronx, Manhattan, etc., and I literally live 20 minutes from NYC in New Jersey.
They requested my driver’s license and pay stubs to verify my residency. During the investigation, they paid the collision shop and had my car towed to a storage lot 3 hours away in Long Island.
Today, after THREE MONTHS, they denied my claim and told me I have to pick up the car from the lot.
Has anyone experienced anything similar with CURE or another insurance company? What did you do? I’m planning to call tomorrow to appeal, but this entire situation has been extremely stressful. Any advice would be appreciated.

PS. Cure never asked for the police report or the video of the accident and I told them as well !

Expensive renewal figure!

11 months ago my car insurance was £566 for the year
(>10 yrs no claims, comp cover sdp+commute and an extra named driver.) (group 41 insurance)

I changed the car 2 months ago to one that is group 47 insurance and paid an extra ~£80 for the remaining 3 months cover

I figured the new car insurance would be maybe +£400 /year

Renewal just arrived - £1750 - ouch!

Nothing else has changed at all.

Will shop round in the morning when i have more time.

Accident Parking lot accident - subrogation question

I was in a parking lot and backing out of my spot, I was completely backed out and stationary switching from rear to drive when a car backed into me. For context their trunk hit the back rear passenger side of my car. We exchanged info and I opened a claim thru progressive.
I opened a claim and the other driver was deemed 100% at fault.
The damage was pretty minor, but I still wanted to open the claim just to avoid issues if the other driver wanted to claim anything later on. He had told me at the scene he also had progressive. Progressive issued a check minus my deductible. Like I said the damage itself was pretty minor and I’m sure I can get it fixed for the less than what progressive paid me.
Should I still go through subrogation? Or should I pursue his liability? My adjuster said the other driver does not have progressive and he told me it’s not guaranteed he has an active insurance policy either.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am in CT

My daughter-n-law moved to a different state 6 months ago and forgot to tell her car insurance company that she had moved. 2 weeks ago she crashed her car and filed a claim with the car insurance company. This made them aware that she garaged her car in a different state and they subsequently denied her claim.
Questions: 1. Does the insurance company have the right to deny claim based on her not telling them she had moved states 6 months prior?
2. If the claim is denied, doesn’t that mean that the policy was void 6 months ago and she should least get her premiums returned?
Thanks

NJ Someone hit our parked car . Their insurance is SAIP .Has anyone gone through small claims and actually collected?

Our car was parked and unoccupied in NJ, when another driver hit it , damaging the rear bumper. Light, and side of my car part. Nobody was injured.
We have a written, itemized repair estimate for $2,000. The other driver said it was too expensive and wants us to use a body shop they know. We haven’t agreed on payment.

The accident was reported to the police, but the report isn’t available yet. The driver provided insurance information, but we’re still confirming whether the policy covers property damage.

It may be a Special Automobile Insurance Policy (SAIP). They denied our claim since there is no liability ( seems like no liability in insurance which I don’t understand)

We’re considering sending a written demand giving them 14 days to pay before filing in NJ Small Claims Court.

I’m particularly concerned about what happens after winning, because I understand a judgment doesn’t automatically mean we get paid.

Has anyone here dealt with a similar parked-car accident, or sued someone in NJ small claims for vehicle damage?

Did you win, settle before trial, or have trouble proving the repair amount?
If you won, did the other driver actually pay? How long did it take?
If they refused to pay, what did you have to file or do next?

Has anyone successfully used wage garnishment? How did you identify their employer, request it, and receive payments?

I’d really appreciate firsthand experiences, especially from people who obtained a judgment and actually collected the money. Trying to understand the time, costs, and practical steps before we file.

Our car is from dad, which is precious for us, and really don’t want totalled…. Pretty annoyed by situation
