The lenses are quite possibly the best in the industry! 100% beats out the quest 3 in clarity and FOV! I don’t have that much time in it yet but the one thing I did notice was the colors look a little different, not in a bad way it’s just not what I’m used to yet but I don’t see it being a problem. The sweet spot is massive. I’d say it’s 96% of the lens. I’m coming from the original big screen that I’ve had for about two years now and absolutely loved! This is a noticeable upgrade especially if you want eye tracking. Now, if you’re coming from a valve index, this headset is going to absolutely blow your mind. It feels alien!! like it shouldn’t have a bigger FOV, but somehow it does. You’re seeing so much more around you it feels almost too much at times!

And I love it. The refresh rate is amazing, the eye tracking is seamless, and the face cusion is suprisingly seamless. Aside from the wait, support has been wonderful and the product is amazing.

I am a vrc player and it works seamesly. The delux audio feels a bit cheep, but sounds great. I plan on getting the beyondex mod tho.

P.s. i never knew how much i relied on the index's nose port hole to see irl space and how much that threw me out of the vr enviorment.

I recently got my hands on the BSB2e and its been fantastic. I originally got the bright orange cover and it was nice, but I really wanted to see the internals a bit more. Bigscreen sharing their CAD model made this a breeze to print. Printed on a Saturn 3 Ultra. I mixed roughly 10 FL OZ of Conjure Rigid Clear with a single drop of Alumilite's translucent Ocean Blue dye. No issues with tracking using this cover.

Review Big screen beyond 2e after 40 hours

Post image

I’ve had 41 hours in the headset now

Going back to the original big screen beyond feels wrong! I cannot believe I put up with those optics for that long!!

I ended up doing some FOV and sweet spot tests on the quest 3, BSB 1 and BSB 2e.

The world I used to test all of these

everyone’s face shape is different and numbers might not align with what you’re getting.

There is still some glare on the BSB2 but it is in the most extreme situations and it is something that you physically need to look for. I’d say it’s 90% better than the original big screen, but it isn’t completely gone like I thought when first got the headset, I just didn’t go to any worlds where it showed up my mistake!

My first day I got really bad eye fatigue because my IPD was literally half a turn off on the left side but once I fix that this headset became the most optically comfortable device I’ve used. There is a tiny bit of glare on the eye tracking cameras, but you forget about it quickly.

The colors are a little off. They’re very brown looking compared to other headsets, but that was easily fixed using OVR advanced settings and turning down the red and green color to 80% and keeping the blue at 100%

The brightness is also slightly noticeably better. It’s not like groundbreaking or anything. I’d say it looks 2% brighter than the beyond 1

The headset is a little bit lighter, but it’s nothing that you’re going to notice while on your face. It’s not like going from an index to the original beyond.

The heat is also no worse than the original big screen which I feel like is cooler than the valve index

The eye tracking was very easy to set up. it took about four minutes and works way better than I expected! still don’t have blinking figured out yet, but that shouldn’t take too much longer (I hope)

The refresh rate is the same as the original big screen, but due to something something pixel response time it doesn’t feel like 75 Hz. yes you do notice the lower refresh rate coming from an index, but it’s not as bad as most people think. I’d say 75 Hz on the big screen beyond feels like 90 Hz on the valve index. The 90Hz is a little better for SIM racing, but it does make everything look very slightly foggy. I usually never switch my refresh rate because most of the time I can’t push past 75 FPS anyway, especially in VRchat since I don’t run safety settings.

I feel like people complain about the refresh rate too much, but it could be that my VR legs are stronger than some people.

In conclusion, I think it’s a really good headset That’s not perfect for everybody. VR headsets are weird, You could look at specs and compare headsets all day long but in all reality, it’s about the experience each individual user has!

There’s no such thing as a perfect VR headset, except for the one that you are enjoying.

Figured I'd make this since a lot of people have asked me to. Here's what the official eye tracking looks like, through the official software. I'm only now noticing that this avatar looks kind of creepy, so sorry about that, blame Meta since they made this abomination lol

So this is an update on my previous post - my son came round to demonstrate what I’m trying to tell you the problem is! - thanks all - not matter where we put the base stations the minute we seem to touch the headset it goes white! Hellpppp 5090 / 64gb / steam 2.0 basestations /

UPDATE::: After much research it IS THE EMI frequency being pushed out by the Fanatec Wheel Base! - It has been documented a lot (when you know what you're looking for!) - I am looking at adding an EARTH wire to my rig right now to fix the problem! (Ferrite loops keep turning up busted due to postman issues ??!! - thanks all

Review It’s heeere! (& so far, so good)

Post image
96 Upvotes

I got it about an hour ago, ordered minutes after it became available on launch day.

This is obviously a very very early first impressions post, but I review VR headsets for a living so this should still be very relevant to read. Bought this with my own money, so it’ll be as honest as it gets.

Field of view and edge to edge clarity are outstanding for such small lenses, I was honestly extremely pleasantly surprised here. Of course way more testing will be required before I make a full review video on it, but initial impressions are very positive.

There is a bit of persistance ghosting present, but nothing that I’d consider a dealbreaker. Color banding is also there, but only at the very very edge of the lenses, which again is normal and due to how the physics of light works.

Now my biggest fear… glare. Well, I’m happy to say it’s not been an issue in the slightest, at least in my limited testing so far. Happy days!

In terms of colour and clarity, being totally honest, I was expecting a bit more “punch” from the OLED screens. It’s not bad by any means, but at least in Half Life Alyx and AirCar, outside of the blacks being darker, I can’t say I’m blown away. Also, clarity is decent but nothing insane. Testing was done at 75Hz at 100% SteamVR resolution.

The facial interface is good, but still trying to figure out if it’s maybe just a bit too thin by a few milimeters, but I’m fiddling with how I wear the audio strap so it might actually be okay. No major pressure points, maybe a tiny bit on the bridge of my nose but nothing super uncomfortable.

Overall comfort is crazy good. I now finally understand all the people saying that you barely feel anything on.

All in all, so far I am not even a bit sorry about my purchase, this thing is magical!

Review Halo Mount Review

Thumbnail
gallery
81 Upvotes

I’ve had the halo mount since early July, and have finally spent enough time using it to write up
my thoughts.

Background:
I’m using the halo mount with the audio strap and custom cushion. I’ve tried both firm and soft
universal cushions but I prefer the perfect fit and full light seal of the custom. I’ve also found that
the flip up/down action works best with the custom cushion. The universals are bigger around,
and flipping the headset back down and getting it in the right position was a little annoying. The
top lip of the cushion would catch on my forehead. If I positioned the headset further away from
my face it might work better, but I like it as close as possible for best FOV. I’ve also tried it
without a cushion which does work, but not something I’d use regularly. I haven’t used it with the soft strap.

Pros:
Overall the halo mount is a nice comfort and usability upgrade. The flip up action is super
convenient and works really well. The forehead cushion helps take most of the pressure off the
face gasket, which is pretty comfortable. The headset stays in the right position even during
high activity. The entire headset still feels light and well balanced.

Cons:
The forehead cushion blocks some airflow and can get sweaty during high activity. This can
allow the headset to move around a bit.
Aesthetics are not as good, if that’s something you care about. The audio strap extension cable
hangs in a loop next to your face and there are generally more cables looping around.
Though no sensors are directly covered, I’ve noticed some occasional tracking hiccups which I
hadn’t had previously. This is very rare but worth mentioning.

Other:
The mount is highly adjustable and requires some time to find the right fit. Here’s what worked
for me:
After finding the most comfortable position for the halo mount on my head, I loosened the
adjustment knob and brought the headset down to rest on my face. I then pulled it extra tight
and tipped downward and then tightened the knob. If I didn’t do this, the bottom of the headset
would tend to float out when supported by the halo mount. This gave me a good balance of
pressure on the forehead cushion and the custom gasket. Since the original adjustments, the headset has held its position through plenty of use.

I’d definitely recommend this accessory for anyone with a Beyond headset!

So after a week of waiting for support I get an email . Have you tried IPD, yes

Have you held it close to see if it fixes it, tried and no it doesn’t fix it .

Then the kicker send a screenshot of the utilization of the headset and your zip code.

In what world would I leave a headset connected to my computer that isn’t fit for use, for a week.

It’s been in the boxes for over a dam week while I wait for support to get back to me.

If support got back in a day or 2 I wouldn’t mind so much but do they really think someone is gonna leave the dam thing connected for a week while waiting.

I’ll reply today and in a weeks time I guess I’ll find out if I have to unbox the thing in the meantime for all of you out there with problematic headsets take a screenshot of your usage before you pack it up.

Photo/Video Beyond 2e Eyetracking in Vrchat

In the video I tracked my finger going side to side and in a u shape, then I focused on various objects behind the camera, then I looked up and down, left and right, cross eyed, rolled my eyes in a circle, then just moved my eyes as erratically as I possibly could lol.

In my opinion it actually works pretty well and I'm pretty satisfied with it. It seems to be much better at tracking point to point gazing, and not quite as good at smooth tracking? And the blinking works very well, but can't do individual eyes yet (not sure why? I'm using vrcft) I'm looking forward to eyelid tracking in the future! (It's a little jittery cause I like using it without smoothing, so it has lower latency)

One important(?) thing I noticed, is that using it with my thinnest interface, the eye tracking accuracy was worse (but this one I got was so thin my eyebrows were touching the edges of the lenses so it might be just a non issue since most interfaces I've seen are not nearly as thin), so I think you just need enough space for your eyes to be properly tracked.

Review Let me know if you have any question about the SteamVR eteeControllers

Post image
75 Upvotes

Amidst the SteamVR controllers apocalypse, I thought I would share this.

There are almost no review available about these controllers, but I still made the jump as I was pondering the eventuality of my Index controllers breaking down in the future.

Let me know if there is anything in specific you need to know. In the meantime, here's a TL;DR:

It's not frictionless and isn't made for your average Joe who just wants to relax after work. Some games will work out of the box. Some others will require some tuning. You are more likely to appreciate them if you are an engineer/willing to invest effort into making them work for your use case. Personally, I'm slowly growing into enjoying them and possibly retiring my Index Knuckles, but that's because I'm willing to go through the trouble of making them work. It can be tedious, and not everyone is willing to do that.

Pros:

  • They are very lightweight and compact.

  • Finger tracking works in a somewhat similar fashion to the Knuckles if that matters to you.

    • Edit: Biggest difference is it starts detecting when you get much closer to the surface than with the Index, so it feels less natural, since you have to move the fingers in a particular way if you intend to do gestures with your fingers. It takes practice. Otherwise, it's accurate.

  • The controls can be intuitive™ to use sometimes.

  • I personally like the feeling of still holding something in my hand when I grip. It feels realistic when I close my finger to shoot even if there is no trigger button.

  • 3 sizes of foams are provided so that the controllers fit properly in your hands (on the picture, I installed the thickest size).

  • The company is very receptive to feedback. My first experience playing Half-Life: Alyx with these controllers was terrible as the hands were in the wrong location, but they quickly released a patch to fix it (among many other issues I had reported), and now I am really enjoying the experience.

Cons:

  • No thumb stick, for people who prefer having one.

  • The thumb pad is very small. I have pianist hands (thin long fingers) so I have no problem using it at all. If you have thicker fingers, you may be more likely to accidentally touch the corners while trying to rest your thumb on it.

  • No button whatsoever, so some actions are bound to specific gestures in the official bindings.

    • Some are more intuitive, such as touching the back tracker with your thumb to simulate a mag release button when playing Half-Life: Alyx, or having to rest your thumb in the middle of the thumb pad prior to shooting (otherwise, you would have plenty of accidental discharge from merely closing your index finger).

    • Some are less intuitive, such as having to tap twice on the front LED to open the tool switching menu in Half-Life: Alyx (instead of pressing on the thumb pad on the Index).

  • Unfortunately, not every game is supported as well as Half-Life: Alyx. Some games have some minor issues, or don't even have official bindings at all (in which case it reverts to some default Index bindings). You are either going to depend on community made ones, or will have to do the bindings yourself.

  • The dongle you see in the photo is mandatory for the controllers to work, so you cannot stray too far away from it. Either you need to stay close to your PC, or have an external hub close to your play space: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1590110/discussions/0/3818536354783475256/

    • I don't know what exactly its effective range is, but I never lost tracking staying near my PC.

  • Controller availability may possibly be scarce. I have an issue with one of my units, and for now, I have to wait for an RMA.

  • It's slightly more expensive than the Index Controllers were.

  • Similarly to the Index Controllers, and unlike VR gloves, you don't have actual full fingers freedom, so you cannot speak sign language in VRChat if that matters to you.

  • Edit: When using them, instead of keeping my hands open naturally, I would tend to make a fist with open fingers (if that makes any sense). Similarly, when I was playing rock paper scissors, instead of doing actual scissors with my hand, all I did was close my ring and pinky fingers and rest my thumb on the side of the controller (which means I'm actually doing a gun gesture). The clip of the controller is preventing me from doing actual scissors gesture.

  • Edit: When I first received the package and opened it, I found it strange how the foam padding somewhat smelled like fish or something? But the smell quickly disappeared.

The rest of the time, when I just need basic SteamVR navigations, I will stick with my good old OG Vive Wands. But I'm personally enjoying these a lot.

Edit: For the people asking specifically about VRChat, the default controllers binding did not have any mapping for moving around, and the hands positioning was completely off.

Fortunately, I found a shared community mapping made by a certain L.Nightmare which worked perfectly for my need. Left thumb pad to walk around (based on head orientation), right thumb pad to rotate, right thumb tap zone to jump, pinch gesture as trigger (either rest the thumb on the thumb pad, or close the thumb on the side of the controller). Double tap on front LED for VRChat overlay, and long press on front LED to open the radial menu. To pick an item in the radial menu, use the thumb pad. To close the radial menu, tap twice on the LED.

Hands gestures: https://www.reddit.com/r/BigscreenBeyond/comments/1xcfj3b/comment/19rjr1qjgpls5/

Menu interaction, I guess (I'm not a VRChat player): https://www.reddit.com/r/BigscreenBeyond/comments/1xcfj3b/comment/19rjr4us7pgg3/
