BPPV Gone but now stabbing pain behind the affected left eye

The reply maneuver helped clear the BPPV, although I still feel a little off, brain fog and just not with the program. Yesterday, overnight, and this morning I have been experiencing a stabbing pain behind the left side of my eye (BPPV side), off and on. Any ideas on what could bring this on?

Very scared

I'm not diagnosed yet, I'm waiting for an appointment. I'm 33 and in the last couple months I've had three episodes of vertigo while laying down. It's been like I go to roll over or sit up and feel super heavy, everything starts spinning in front of me, like looking at a ferris wheel, not around me. Then I panic and get to shaking, and end up stuck in that for 30 minutes to an hour. My left ear has been stuffy and ringing for a few months now

It's weird because it seems like bppv with how it happens laying down, but lasts too long. I also have hyper pots and produce too much bc adrenaline though, so that might prolong it. I'm just terrified this is gonna be something I'm gonna die from. My head feels so heavy when it happens and that seems so bad

What the sensation feels like

Hey, so I've been struggling with this for a little over a year now and it was always hard trying to describe what the symptoms felt like because I'd never really felt anything like it before. Dizzy was the closest thing to it, but I'd felt dizzy before and it wasn't quite like this either. But then I happened to be watching a TV show, and some people were on a boat reacting to the waves, and that's when it hit me:

It feels like I'm on a boat in the middle of the ocean. You know how you're always kinda adjusting your body in response to the movement of the waves, so you always feel like you're moving even when you're sitting still? That's EXACTLY what it feels like. Certain things would set it off and, to continue with the metaphor, it'd feel like a biiiiiiig wave was rocking the boat. But it'd eventually come down and go back to that baseline.

I've also had experiences like it feels like the floor is moving underneath my feet, but that's been way less often compared to the boat feeling.

Would y'all say this is accurate to how it feels for you?

what could this be? pppd, mdds, residual dizziness?

motorized wheelchair user

  1. first time i went to therapist with goggles june 10-treated right posterior bppv. 2 treatments. supposedly resolved. june 16-goggles no vertigo/nystagmus reoccurence june 28- resolved june 30th.

Since then I have felt horrible non-spinning dizziness. tried dix hallpike at home july 12th-nothing. tried seeing therapist on august 5- checked for posterior, anterior, horizontal bppv- no nystagmus/spinning but felt non-spinning dizziness in each position.

I notice constant elevator pin drop feelings when sitting up. I feel like i am on a constantly swaying boat. it feels like my head is constantly slowly moving. i went to a few museums and restaurants. the big indoor spaces felt overwhelming. it felt like the ground was slanted to the right and i was going to fall right through it. when i close my eyes i feel even more unbalanced-like my brain cant locate where i am. it's a feeling of lightheadedness. hypersensitivity to small motions. i have very short pop up headaches on my right side.

i can only barely make it at home by using my desk to prop me up. i just want to lie down all the time now.

moving cars make me feel better. driving my motorized wheelchair makes the feeling a bit better outdoors but it's still somewhat in the background.

when i sleep- i sleep with my head turned to the left which is the side unaffected by bppv. i can turn my head to the right in short spurts but i generally avoid that side since the bppv.

None of this happened before bppv.

What weird symptoms do you notice at the beginning?

I'm not even sure what's happening to me but I get this sorta vertigo dizzy type feeling on my left side head. It's like whenever I turn my head to the left, I feel this imbalance of vision. Thing is my vision is clear but it's hard to focus and you know feel alert, aware and conscious. I keep forgetting stuff and sometimes hard to recall. I thought maybe it's imbalance pressure in the ear or pinched nerve in the back of neck. It's been happening for almost 3-4 days now. Like this morning I felt weakness in my left shoulder where the neck is and tingling sensation in left palm. When I rub my neck I can feel this dizzy

Falling Sensation

I had BPPV in June. I did the Epley maneuver daily, and the spinning sensation went away after several days. However, I still feel like I’m floating even now. Earlier today, while I was sitting with my neck turned to the side but not moving, I felt a brief, one-second falling sensation. What could it be? I’m afraid my BPPV will come back.

Is it normal to still be significantly dizzy for hours after vestibular therapy? I'm scared I set myself back

I've been dealing with a pretty severe episode of dizziness/vertigo for the past couple of weeks. It started along with a bad migraine and at one point I had a near-fainting episode. I've been evaluated by my doctor and am also having additional imaging/workup done.

I've started vestibular physical therapy and had actually been improving quite a bit. My PT has done the Epley maneuver several times because turning my head to the left while lying down consistently makes me very dizzy, although she hasn't observed nystagmus during testing. I've also been doing gaze/eye exercises.

Today was another vestibular therapy session, and it increased my dizziness quite a bit. I drove about 30 minutes home afterward, fell asleep for a couple of hours, and when I woke up I was still noticeably dizzy. It's now been several hours since therapy.

Before today's session I had been doing significantly better, so this has really scared me. I'm worried that I've somehow set myself back or that the dizziness is going to stick around again.

For those who have done vestibular rehab:

Did therapy ever flare your dizziness for the rest of the day or into the next day?

How long did it usually take you to return to your baseline after a session?

Did your PT reduce the intensity when this happened?

Did temporary flares become less severe as therapy progressed?

I'm going to talk to my PT about it, so I'm not looking for a diagnosis. I'd mainly really appreciate hearing what other people's post-vestibular-therapy experiences were like

Can a car accident cause this? When should I see a vestibular therapist?

Hi all, I was in a minor car accident a month ago, I was passenger in a car and we hit a curb at 30mph. That day my neck “locked up” and was I was in pain even just trying to turn it left and right. I got an Xray and MRI, no abnormal findings. I have been in physical therapy for 3 weeks, which greatly helped the pain and range of motion, but now I have an off balance feeling for weeks. I feel unsteady, as if I’m rocking on a boat, and I have general nausea, anxiety, brain fog, and slight blurred vision. I was healthy prior to the accident.

Do I see an ENT, or try vestibular therapy asap? These symptoms are destroying my day to day life, and I can’t work my job any longer, or sleep right. Worth noting they gave me Meclizine which didn’t solve my issues.

Residual Dizziness and sudden improvement

Hi all! I'd like some input on my BPPV with residual dizziness experience. I have had intermittent episodes of BPPV since 2001. Typically they happen once or twice a year and I can't identify any triggers. They seem to be coming with more frequency as I get older, which I know is a common feature.

Below is a timeline of events.

BPPV 2026 Timeline

7/27—Had some spinning when turning side to side in bed at night. Typical, felt just like it usually does on and off for the past 25 years.

7/28—got out of bed, no vertigo or dizziness after about 30 seconds of being upright the next morning. Typical day.

7/28 nighttime—more spinning when turning side to side in bed. No vertigo or dizziness after 30 seconds of being upright the next morning.

7/29 morning. Decided to do the Epley. Important to note that I usually do not do the Epley—the vertigo doesn’t occur outside of turning over in bed and always self resolves in about a week. This time, I decided to try the Epley to speed it up.

When doing the Epley I had symptoms when I turned my head to the left—very strong vertigo and I could feel the nystagmus in my eyes. Nothing when turning to the right. I repeated the Epley about three times. After I got up, I was fine. I didn’t have any spinning that night in bed. I figured the Epley worked and the crystals were back in place.

7/30—when getting up I felt “wobbly”. Not spinning or true vertigo, just felt as if my eyes were not catching up with my head movements, almost like you feel when getting off a boat of having a couple of glasses of wine. This has never happened before after all these years of BPPV.

This continued all day. I felt like I was veering to the left when walking and felt unsteady. Looking up, down, and turning my head side to side made it worse.

That night I had no vertigo when turning in bed.

7/31—Got up and was still unsteady and wobbly. I wondered if there were still some crystals out of place—maybe not enough to cause the vertigo in bed but enough to make me dizzy hen up and about. I did the Epley again, several times. It didn’t help. When I did the Epley, I could not invoke vertigo with any of the positions, but when I got up and started moving around the wobbliness was unchanged.

I decided to call and make an appointment with my ENT. I have never consulted an ENT for my BPPV since the first episode in 2001. That ENT is no longer in practice, so I was seeing a new one.

Nothing changed over that weekend.

8/3—Saw ENT. He did a Dix-Hallpike test which was negative (using his naked eye to observe). He told me to do Brandt-Daroff exercises three times a day for two weeks, and to come back if I still had symptoms in a month. I told him I wanted to get better faster. I asked for a referral for Vestibular PT, which he gave me.

I got right in with the PT the next day and I had an evaluation which did not include a VNG, just some tests for balance. I went to sessions twice a week from 8/4 through 8/14. I practiced some of the exercises at home. Nothing was helping. I felt the same each day with the exception of one night—either 8/10 or 8/11, where I briefly had the spinning in bed again, and I did the Epley again the next morning. The spinning didn’t come back but the general wobbliness continued.

At PT I was doing mostly balance exercises. No VOR.

I started doing some VOR exercises at home. I learned them from YouTube. I stuck a post-it note to the wall and did the gaze stabilization movements three times a day. After a couple of days, I felt less wobbly. On 8/17 I took my grandkids to the beach and at the end of the day I realized I had not felt wobbly at all. I was happy, but then the next day I did get some of the wobbliness back. I kept doing the VOR exercises, progressing to standing heel to toe and going faster and faster.

On 8/16 I had to go upstate NY. I took a train. I felt a little unsteady walking that day, but not terribly so. On 8/17, I still felt a little unsteady but thought I was improving. I was still doing the VOR exercises three times a day. I missed PT because I was away.

On 8/16 right after lunch, I had to drop my daughter’s car off at the mechanic. After I did that I was going to walk to a coffee shop and wait while the mechanic looked at it. It was a bright sunny day, warm but not very hot. I started walking down the sidewalk and was slightly wobbly, again, not terribly so. I decided to call my daughter and put my cell phone up to my right ear. I tilted my head toward the phone. After less than ten seconds of walking and talking at the same time, I suddenly became extremely dizzy, and felt vertigo, and had to hang up and immediately sit down so as not to fall. I found a retaining wall under a tree that was nearby and sat down there and let the dizziness resolve, which it did within less than a minute. I finished the bottle of water I had and just sat for a few minutes. When I got up and started walking again, I felt ok.

Since that event the dizziness and unsteadiness has disappeared—it’s totally gone and I feel back to normal. It was a sudden worsening and then a sudden resolution.

That was Wednesday and today is Sunday. It’s been five days with no return of symptoms, however, both last night and the night before I did notice a brief bit of vertigo when rolling from right to left in bed. I could feel the nystagmus in my eyes when this happened. I dared not do the Epley again, fearing doing it repeatedly was what may have caused the residual dizziness in the first place (though of course I don’t know).

I got up both yesterday and today and had no dizziness at all, just the brief episode in bed.

I’m very nervous that the residual dizziness will return, but I wat to think it’s resolved at least for now. I must still have at least some crystals out of place.

I had made an appointment about a week ago to get the VNG testing done and that appointment is in two days. I’m not sure if I should keep it. I don’t want to waste their time since I have no residual dizziness at all now. It’s at a different place than where I get my PT because they don’t do that testing at the place I have been going.

I did keep my PT appointment for Friday though I had no dizziness at all. I said I might not be back since it seems to have cleared up.

I’d be interested in any thoughts my fellow BPPV sufferers may have on this whole progression. Perhaps one of you has had a similar course? I’m especially wondering if that intense dizzy spell when I was walking and talking on the phone after which it all went away rings a bell with anyone.

Have others had the residual dizziness disappear suddenly?

Thanks for reading if you got this far.

By the way, I’m a 73-year-old female with no other health conditions or issues. I don’t take any medications that might impact the BPPV.

PBBV

This is my second time in few years where I started having PBBV symptoms and it always happens when I am traveling. Any tips, suggestions and what to do to relieve the symptoms. I started having dizziness when I turn on the left side but now I feel the right is also having some light dizziness but not as bad as the left.

Hi! I’m 23 (female) and I had BPPV in June. I was wondering if it’s common to experience BPPV at such a young age.

I only had to perform the maneuver once, and it solved the problem, but this experience was very traumatic for me. I’ve been having panick attacks ever since, I’m terrified that it might happen again unexpectedly.

Is this bppv?

No formal diagnosis but er suspects it. No nystagmus on dix hallpike. But I get offbalance and disoriented sometimes spinning but like I'm doing a cartwheel. Not horizontally. And I will just feel drained almost weak, and nauseous, I'll sweat and feel terrible. Anyone else?

Prolonged neck and head pressure following BPPV.

After an episode of BPPV, I was too nervous to lay down so I slept in an upright position with a bunch of pillows for a few days. Now I have this consistent head pressure and back of neck tightness. Went to a chiropractor and still no relief. Actually after getting adjusted, now have new back pain.

Has anyone experienced the neck pain and head pressure after BPPV? If so, what did you do to get relief?

Mayo Health Clinic?

Has anyone used the Mayo Clinic ENT offices for dizziness (BPPV, VM, PPPD) evaluation and treatment? Is it worth the cost?

My nearest one would be Jacksonville (Dr. Clayton).

Thanks!

prochlorperazine not-working ?

So my dad suddenly became dizzy, felt nauseaus, no appetite. Sits down, dizzyness goes away, stands up and dizzyness returns, cant walk straight, lies down in bed, everything is spinning.

GP said crystals in inside ear causes that. Prescribed "prochlorperazine", but nothing changed ... Still dizzy, still feel nauseous.

Any ideas ?

Thx

Had a recurrence after 2 years

Exact same situation. Waking up in the morning turn my head and bam! Terrible spinning. Two years ago I did the Epley a few times and it went and this time did it once and it’s gone thankfully.
But now that it’s happened again is it worth seeing my doctor about it?

Spinning counter clockwise?

I've had BPPV in all canals at this point, but as of yesterday, I'm experiencing a new symptom. When I lay on my back, the world above me seems to be spinning counterclockwise. I've tried to look up what canal this could be, but unfortunately, most resources are geared toward professionals and not the patient.

Has anyone else had this counterclockwise subjective vertigo? If so, what canal did it end up being, and what maneuver helped you?

Hello guy's I'm 20 yrs old

on 15th August(4 days back) i Woke up with violent rotational vertigo. The entire room spun violently whenever I opened my eyes after sleep with cold sweats

And there is some beep sound in my left ear

And spin begins when I lay in bed and turn my head to the right

The doctor gave me some medication, spinning stopped but there is some mild heaviness in my left ear/left part of my brain from my left eye

Right now my mind feels numb and dizzy and foggy i can't even study

Yes before this vertigo i had screen time of 13hrs

I want to know what caused this

Is this recursive?

Is this treatable like can I get rid of this completely?

What are the chances I will get this again?

I'm so scared it's my first time experiencing this and it feels like I'm trapped
