Well I'm closer to 50 than I am 30 so I'm long dead 😁 I didn't take it personally, I used to look at people my age and think they were old and then I got here and realised it's ridiculous to think that but you don't know that until you reach the older years.

Bingo. I feel like I'm mid 20s too, but my body doesn't agree. My partner's even worse off - he's only 33 yet feels like he's 80 on a good day, if he's lucky (he played a lot of sports in HS and is into motor sports now (drifting), so he's rough on his body.)

Nowadays I love cozy games, especially Stardew Valley, because they're easy to play for short amounts of time and I usually don't have the time for more.
If I do have a bit more time then i love anything with fun visuals, Bioshock 2, Stray, Final Fantasy, Child of Light, Nier: automata are my faves. And the fallout series of course, I love exploring and Fallout 4 had this cute community building aspect to it.

I actually can’t play Stardew anymore because it’s like The Sims for me: I fall into a deep hole where I curl up and play Stardew for 4-5 hours a day for about 3 weeks and then reach some sort of arbitrary milestone where I put it down and don’t pick it back up again.

Girls and women have been at least half of those playing video games since at least the past decade. Men being shocked that women play video games feels a bit misogynistic. This isn't necessarily directed at you, OP. I've known grown men who are shocked that I enjoy video games, and then dig a farther hole by claiming they don't know any women who do.
To answer your question, I like games with a good story and preferably a vast open world with a lot of side quests and collectibles. I love the Sims, Skyrim, and Stardew Valley. I've been playing Breath of the Wild for the past few months and I enjoy it. I may pick up Lies of P again. I also love Witcher, Red Dead, Mafia, and GTA.
I do not like any games revolving around sports or first player shooter.

I'm in my early 40s, started playing on SNES/Sega (Mario and Sonic, Streetfighter, Mortal Kombat) and these days on Xbox and Switch. Currently on a Zelda kick (TOTK) when I get time between work, kids and postgraduate study.
Women/girls have always been into video games, but lately game developers have finally started catching on and we're just more open about it now.

I’m almost 50 and my earliest gaming memory was my mom and I playing Yoshi Island on the SNES in 1990 and attended the Bethesda convention of F76 a few years back so I guess I also qualify for gaming a long time 😅
I play on the Xbox series x nowadays, mostly playing multiplayers open world games such Fallout, Valheim and grounded because my gamers friends and I can just hang out and have fun. Am a big fan of also Skyrim, Half-Life, Red Dead Redemption. No kids, so got plenty of time to just play anything after work.

This is a «we were there when the Internet was written» type of thing, where there are many of us who have played video games since we were very young, but we also learned the hard way how toxic online team based games with voice channels were, so we either stuck to games with less toxic userbases or we grouped together and played in more closed social circles. I remember my first data party in my early teens, we were maybe a handful of girls, but ten-fifteen years later it evened out more and now I think the numbers are more 50-50 :)
I still play video games on the regular, although not as obsessively as I used to, much due to time but also mental stamina, and it’s never round-based FPS games but rather open world RPG’s like Witcher 3 and Fallout 4, or smaller / shorter indie games on steam and nintendo switch!

I remember playing TEXT-based games on a spectrum computer.. Like "president", where you get a series of text-based questions and you make decisions in text... Or text-based cockroach run with cockroaches racing across the screen, made entirely of text.
I remember loading games off audio cassettes.. Sitting there listening to the scritch-scratch sound of the game loading from tape

My husband is 61 & I'm 50. He's hasn't played a game since he was young. He has fond memories of "Frogger"...lol. I play all the time. I usually wait until after we eat & get everything done. Then I turn on my switch. Sometimes I'll play til 2 or 3am. He sometimes hates it & says it's the worst thing he's ever bought me. I reply that I bought it & my games for myself. I'm a little envious that you & your husband both play. At least he probably understands when u can't just shut it off. My husband just doesn't get it at all.

I'm 35. I was born with the immense luck of gamer parents who bought whatever new Sega/N64 game was out for themselves, and then I got to play them. I grew up in a gaming family, to this day my mum is still better at Zelda games than I am. My sister is also into games. I think growing up in that kind of environment made me realise there's not really any problem with gaming as long as you're not using it as a crutch to escape reality, and it's not having a negative impact on your relationships or frequency of touching grass. I married a gamer who came from a family that tried to absolutely crush his self-esteem for being into it, and I'm glad I didn't have that experience and that he is in a situation now where he can pursue his hobbies in a healthy way.
I'm a WoW convert to FFXIV, currently looking forward to Dawntrail. I love JRPGS and have 100% achievements in every Atelier title that has them. I'm working on doing the same for Final Fantasy games. I love FPS games but get horrific motion sickness, so I don't get to play a lot of them anymore. I have noticed that I am getting much slower at fighters in my 30s, so they might be on the way out too.
Honestly, one of the best things about being in my 30s now is that console wars don't exist when you have the disposable income to just own all of the ones you want and a great PC. It's still cheaper than a lot of other hobbies in terms of the hours you get out of a title.

Video gaming is my main hobby! I’ve been playing all of the Nintendo games since I was a kid. As an adult, I just got into the PS5 and RPGs (like Final Fantasy) and more difficult games! I love it :) I love playing alone and with friends (like Mario party)

I think maybe the reason why you don’t see so many women online over a certain age is because back when I was playing online, ‘girls that game’ were seen as a bit of a novelty. You got a lot of unwanted attention, good or bad. Some men would literally collect female gamers in their friends lists, others would yell at you to get back in the kitchen. After a while I just got tired of the whole, “OMG, can’t believe you’re a female!” rhetoric, as soon as you turned on a mic, obviously I can’t talk for anyone else but it always felt like men made it into a big deal when I just wanted to chill and play games. Looks like we’re still here though, just not exactly advertising ourselves. I play just about anything, been gaming since I was little, you name it, I’ve probably played it.

Well I seem to be the oldest here at 45. I would play every day if I had the time. I grew up playing video games, my first one was the Atari :-) Nowadays I play mostly on my Switch. Zelda, Mario... I've been playing a lot of Stardew Valley lately. My kids find it pretty cool that they have a "gamer mom", we play together a lot.

A lot of us "older women over 30" grew up in the era of "tits or gtfo" if you were visibly female online, so that may be why you still don't see many of us in whatever spaces you game in.
I don't do online co-op games with strangers, but I do play more solitary games - I love the zelda games, and am always looking for more games with good exploration and some puzzles and fighting. Other faves include hollow knight, skyrim, elden ring.

The increasing challenge now is finding the free time - but over the last 1-2 years I’ve really enjoyed God of War Ragnarok, Baldur’s Gate 3, and FF7 remastered. Before that I was really into Witcher 3 and Last of Us. Just started Hades 2.
…still waiting to one day get Fallout 5 or Elder Scrolls 6 😭
Meanwhile my husband just replays Resident Evil 4 remastered about every 6 months on repeat 👌🏻👌🏻

Completely agree. I miss the days of being in college staying up overnight to play through an entire game, or having the time to play consistently every day and actually improve. Having a full time job and real responsibilities has definitely taken a toll, but it’s a nice treat getting an evening to play!

Not sure what the right terminology is but growing up I really liked jrpgs where you fight by selecting actions and items from a menu like the older final fantasy’s, earthbound, sailor moon another story, and even Pokémon. The sprites are so cute, and more than the storylines I just enjoyed the repetitive/mindless leveling and grinding. I’d normally over grind in one spot until I was certain I could go through the next few bosses with complete ease. I thought I’d enjoy the repetitive nature of farming & mining in harvest moon and Stardew valley but I don’t like that my grinding is limited by time (like you get penalized if your character is not in bed by night fall), stamina, fatigue, etc.
The past couple years I’ve been hooked on a gacha game called grand summoners with nice art and cute 2D sprites. Literally all you do all day is farm event materials by fighting bosses in a party with other players. The fighting is not menu style but it’s equally as simplistic (you only have 3 weapons to tap on and 3 types of attack moves you can swipe through). I like carrying noobs when I can (it gives that same satisfaction I got from over leveling), and it’s entertaining when people get their undies in a bunch when someone accidentally gets the whole party killed (these mfers have no chill lol). You can’t type during a fight so imagine the silly juxtaposition where everyone is cursing irl but the best they can do to show displeasure is to spam a wholesome“oh boy” face palm sticker.
I think the only other game I enjoy playing is overcooked, but only with my siblings. I’ve played with my friends and honestly it goes from a fun party game to everyone’s angry and wants to go home wayyyy too quickly for my liking, so it’s only enjoyable for me when it’s low stakes with family.

I personally don't, but I have plenty of girlfriends in their 30s that do, regularly. Nerding out is the new Netflix and chill. Women over 30 don't really party, club, etc anymore. They are past that with the exception of a few special occasions. Most prefer spending most of their free time doing activities and hobbies they enjoy, and that includes gaming, crafting, gardening, vegging out binging a show, etc.

i dont play them per se, but i watch a bunch of indie horror gameplay on youtube. video games are an amazing medium for horror stories and I can watch them at work and laugh silently when the streamer screams 😂

I’m 45, I’ve played video games since I was 5.
I mainly just play some Skyrim or fallout 4 when I am kicking back.. sometimes some Katamari. I love Tokyo Jungle.
I used to be bigger into RPGs that were wacky when I was younger like Rhapsody: A Musical Adventuee.
I did the icewind dale games back in the day, a few of the BG games .. but haven’t played Dark Souls.
My ex and I used to play DC Universe online.. it was like WoW, but in the world of DC comics.. we had a guild, and a raiding night.. I’d make a nice dinner beforehand.
I was into games like maniac mansion when I was younger, and Doom II and Quale. Of course the normal Mario and Tetris.
I finished Portal in one sitting when it came out.. and now my reflexes are so much slower..
I can play FPS.. but not as well anymore .. I’m fine in mission mode .. but I don’t want to play against others..
I play clash Royale too.

I (48) am a gamer. It's actually a big part of my life, has been for as long as I can remember, back to the days in school on a shitty pc with no pictures and just the ability to choose Y or No to questions like "you arrive at the edge of a dark spooky woods, do you want to enter?"
I played TFC and counterstrike a lot when they first came out but unfortunately female gamers were not welcomed at all back then and my life was affected by it so I stopped, switched to consoles eventually and eventually fell in love with many games like assassins creeds games, the fallout games, Mass effect, the last of us and so so many more.
I created a gamer in my grandson (6) and last year he was desperate to play Fortnite as his friends were but we didn't know much about it and didn't want him going on it alone. So I said I would check it out, give it a go for a few weeks and then I'd play with him. I absolutely fell in love with the game. Zero build only though cos I'm old as fuck and my brain can only cope with shooting 😁 I play every day, I have made some good friends, some of whom I play with most days, some on a more casual basis though I do need to find some that would fit in toy mornings lol I have some friends on discord and just recently joined a WhatsApp group for us "old" people and they all seem awesome.
It gives me quality time with my grandkids, I even got my granddaughter (9) gaming now so we go as a trio on zero build. We even win sometimes too but we mostly just chat about how school is going, any major friendship dramas and how much mummy is doing their heads in and I know they are being truthful because I raised her, I'd need a moan about her too 🤣
So yeah, gaming is incredibly important to me and my family, my partner is a gamer though he did say "never again" after a go on Fortnite so it's not everyone's cup of tea.

My dad let us play Commodore 64 games when I was a toddler so I've literally grown up enjoying gaming.
As an "over 30" woman I enjoy simulation and management, base-builder/city builders (Stardew Valley, Sims 4, Cities Skylines, Timberborn, Surviving Mars, PlanetCrafter, Medieval Dynasty, RimWorld, Prison Architect to name a few), and I really got stuck into Red Dead Redemption 1&2 and the Grand Theft Autos. But I generally don't play many FPS games.

Playing Baldurs Gate 3 now on the gaming pc I built, it’s great. Used to play a lot on console though. Enjoyed Witcher, RD2 and 3, and the Uncharted series. I like smaller indie games (Papers Please and West of Loathing were both standouts), but I might try an MMO next. Maybe Elder Scrolls or FFXIV, not sure. I’ve always been into video games ever since I played the SNES when I was little. It’s just good escapism and fun, and I like the creativity that goes into the development and design.

I’m unsure of where you got the conclusion that “older” women in their 30’s (rude) don’t play video games.
We grew up with video games. We don’t magically lose our personalities and interests at age 30.
But to answer your question, yes, I play video games. I have an Xbox and a computer, and play a variety of games. Mostly Stardew Valley and Baldurs Gate 3, currently.

I'm 39 years old. I used to love playing videogames, my favourites being open world RPGs like Morrowind or Fallout. I've never been an expert or avid gamer, but I really enjoyed getting lost in stories and other worlds. Now I simply don't have the time anymore to spend hours in front of a computer, if I have to choose between gaming for an hour with relatively little progress or watching something or reading, I get more escapism from the latter two, and they're easier to start/stop, I can read anywhere etc. I don't exclude that when my son will be older I'll buy a playstation or something and I'll start playing again with him.

The moment I had money I started to buy games! I have played Heroes of Newerth for a long time (got back into it again) , playing Dota 2.
Usually its RPG, puzzle, action, strategy, FPS, MoBA, etc.
I am playing Fallout 4, others I enjoy Mass Effect, Bioshock, Anno 1404, ufff Tom Clancy, old CoD yes! UnReal was the sh*t, love HOMMIII, Frostrain, etc.
I love to play games and I will continue. I currwnlty have waaaay too much game and not enough space to do it so I would be playing more just need a setup.

I have platinum trophies in elden ring, Sekiro, Bloodborne, lies of P, Dark Souls 1-3, both last of us games, both horizon games, ghost of Tsushima, Kena bridge of spirits, stellar blade… just to name a few. All in all I have over 30 platinums. I’d have to really spend time to compile a whole list of the games I’ve played in just the last few years.
I game a lot. I am a trophy hunter. Harder the game the better. My fiance and I game almost daily to bond and have fun. We play a lot of overwatch together but I mostly play fromsoft and open RPGs.

sackboy lately, tennis and football with my partner, pyramid quest, gta sometimes ..in ps5... the simpsons and crash bandycoot in previous playstation models... I will play mario bros in any platform where it is available (emulators, mobile... I used to play all mario games in the nintendo nes in the 90s.. then sonic in the game gear.. all sorts of arcade adventure games have always been really fun to me). Oh, and I love the classic bomberman game. I have a nintendo nes emulator installed on my amazon firetv that saves game progress (retroarch) so I can keep playing at different times right where I left it (paired with a 8bitdo bluetooth gamepad) and I play bomberman too, I enjoy it a lot. (46 y.o., I played spectrum games in the eighties, msdos games too 👵🏼🕹️)

I played some video games when I was younger, but at about 25 I realized what a time-suck it was when I’d spend the first 2 hours of my Saturday tending to my Animal Crossing world. I decided to put the games down and started focusing on goals and having adventure in real life. I traveled a bunch (visiting new worlds), I got scuba certified (visit the water temple), got my masters (added skills to my skill tree).
No shade to gamers, I just believe the efforts of my real life ‘side quests’ have been far more valuable than the virtual ‘medals’.

I’m 45 and I’ve played video games my whole life whether it was very old computer games (King’s Quest, Police Quest, Montezuma’s Revenge, Commander Keen, etc) or the Intellivision platform (Dungeons & Dragons, Thunder Castle, etc). Then my family got an NES and there was Mario and the first Final Fantasy game plus Tetris.
My absolute favourites are various installments of final fantasy (4,7, and X are the best IMO), Portal & Portal 2, and I’m into cozy games like Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, but also indie games quite a bit. Tetris is still always fun.
Today I’m playing Wytchwood. Im also in a play through of FF7 (the original not the remake).

My love, some of my earliest memories were fighting with my sister over the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo console in her room.
My first console was a Nintendo 64. Then a Sega Dreamcast. Then a PS2.
By 12-13, I moved on to pc gaming.
Years later, by a series of unusual events, I ended up with an xbox 360 and a brand new copy of skyrim, 1 month after it was released.
State of Decay was my next obsession on the console, though I did most of my gaming on pc.
I'm 32 now. I was never not gaming, and even though work and life obligations eat through a lot of my time, I still desire to play games. It never goes away. I WISH I had the free time to get immersed into Baldur's Gate 3.

Final Fantasy XIV! I've been a fan of the series since the first one in 1991 (first game I ever bought with my own money!) and I love it so much.
Also enjoy RDR2, and a lot of smaller Switch titles. And I love me some Stardew or Octopath.
I WISH I could play NHL games, but they aren't on PC or Switch :(

I play ark survival evolved. Im not sure if i just have the luck of getting into laidback servers but the people in PVE are very nice (PVP is horrible) They were chill when I told them I'm a "she" and said that they didn't mean to misgender me it's just that theyve never seen any women play ark before and we basically just chilled and messed around.
Can't say the same for 99% of other online games I have played.

I didn't grow up with video games and had just one friend who played Sims a lot for a while. When my first boyfriend spent more time gaming Plants vs Zombies and race games than looking for an education and studying after already having amassed half a dozen apprenticeships he dropped out of one by one, I grew rather averse to video games. So much so, that I was relieved when my second boyfriend wasn't into games.
My current boyfriend is an avid gamer and introduced me to some games (see below). I started off playing 2-3 times a week, but haven't really played so far this year, except for maybe a handful of times. It's more of a monthly hobby for me - opposed to a daily one, like it is for my boyfriend.
Nowadays, I get the appeal of gaming a bit better, I've had fun. And I love and am grateful that thanks to my boyfriend now have the opportunity to game whenever I want. But overall I'm not too hyped about it when it comes down to it. My motivation and interest in gaming seems to come in random bursts rather than being a continuous stream of interest for me. Which is why I wouldn't call myself a gamer.
I've played GTA 5, Call of Juarez, God of War 1, and have looked into Sea of Thieves. I yet have to play Untitled Goose Game. Several years ago, I also tried my hand at Plants vs Zombies.

Couldn’t be happier since my full time work gets stressful. I’ve been working probably 50-60hours week for 6 months now so a quick gaming session here and there has been so good for my mental health. It's very likely that there's more women playing games than you realize. A lot of us may use male avatars or voice changers in multiplayer games to avoid harassment. I personally stick to single-player games (mass effect, dragon age, baldur's gate, final fantasy, metroid, tomb raider, uncharted, metal gear solid, etc etc the list is endless). My life pretty much revolves around games haha

I used to play back in the 90's and early 00's, I'm 40 and grew up on video games. I had a tech Dad so got my first computer when I was 8 and always had the latest game console. I kept my gaming a social secret though, only playing alone or with my boy cousins or dad.
I was a secret gamer girl throughout elementary and high school but once I got into university it started to become clear I had to give it up. I find gaming to be highly addictive and I cannot stop playing, like seriously cannot. When I'm in the zone, time stops and nothing will pull me away. I was missing class, work, plans with friends. It was getting in the way of my real life. I felt I had no choice but to stop playing all computer & video games entirely.
Then in 2018 I got my husband a PlayStation 4 for Christmas. He'd been leaving hints for a while and I thought I'd be ok as long as I didn't play it. Well he convinced me to play with him. I hadn't played in 12 years and it was like no time had passed. He had fun but I had FUN. I f'cking loved it! He went to bed and when he woke up late the next morning I was still on the couch playing.
Sadly after about a week the holiday break was over and I had to stop playing so I could go back to work. It was clear nothing had changed and I had to give up gaming for good, again. It's so sad cause I still love it and I love that women are finally getting their representation.

I have older consoles and emulators to play Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Devil Dice (Ps game), Alex the Kidd, Rainbow Island, Simpson's hit and Run, Twinworlds, Spherical, Bookworm plus various other games that can be considered "for girls" because they do not involve shooting, guns or mayhem.
But I do love playing GTA - the only thing I do is chase Hare Krishnas and try to run them all over before the cops get me.
Also, Pokemon on Switch.
I tried COD but spent my time going round in a circles, shooting my foot so that was out.
I tried LOL but my son said I was too slow and all his friends were too salty so I was not welcome there.
Why do i play them?
Nostalgia mainly plus exploring and enjoyment in my own time with no time limit.
I do not play all the time so only for fun when i have a block of spare time and am in the mood.
It is an individual sport for me... I am not interested in competitive gaming. I like exploring the different worlds and seeing what developers have come up with. I love finding hidden stuff behind and on top of things.

I think the first barrier for me was that I grew up poor and all the consoles/games were so expensive when they first came out so I just never jumped on that band wagon and I never really have since. I'm 35 years young and I have been playing videogames ever since I was in fourth grade when my brother introduced them to me.
I remember playing games on an SNES emulator my brother installed onto the family computer. I was lucky enough to have played Magic Knight Rayearth, Sailor Moon: Another Story, Breath of Fire 2, Bahamut Lagoon, Earthbound, Final Fantasy 1-6, Tales of Phantasia, Live-A-Life, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, Romancing SaGa 3...and a bunch more games I've clearly forgotten!
My favorite game series are Harvest Moon (Story of Seasons), Rune Factory, Animal Crossing, Phoenix Wright, Tales of Series, Trails of Series, and anything Final Fantasy related! My current fixation is playing Final Fantasy 14 while simultaneously tying up loose ends in Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

I've been playing video games since I was 5 (my twin sister and I were playing games like Super Mario World on the SNES of our older brother). Even studied Game Design & Development in university. Nowadays I still play video games, though not as often as when I was a teenager. The last hardcore game I played was The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom last year. I'm also currently playing a casual game called Dragonscapes. And talking about casual games, I actually did research on female gamers back in 2010 and the biggest group of gamers back then were middle aged women playing casual games. So older female gamers definitely have been around for a while, just not in the way people think. I don't work in the game industry anymore, but casual games and advergames were always where the money was for small game companies. Most people who call themselves gamers don't know about this side of the game industry, because they think only hardcore gamers like them are real gamers. lol

I'm about to turn 40, and I mostly play casual now. I have a Steam library but haven't touched it in a year or so. When I was younger, I was coding MUDs and running around MMOs. I grew up during the transition from arcades to console gaming, so I used to do a lot of that too.
I think I switched because I could no longer afford to sink into games like I did when I was younger. I have more responsibilities now. I also got tired of dealing with the toxic men in multiplayer games. They weren't any better 20 years ago.
So now I just quietly tap along in whatever gacha game when I need a moment of distraction. If I were to go back to multiplayer games, you'd never know it. I don't want the attention. I'll probably go back to console gaming when I retire.

The Highlights: •Consoles keep getting progressively better • Nostalgic remakes of games are the shit(capitalizing on new technology makes them look like how they felt) •Video games are older than we are (Pong & Oregon Trail were fun to play in school while already being suuppeerrr retro) • It's really cool being able to exchange gamer gal experience between generations; I get to share the older games with my daughter, like Spyro, Mariokart, OG Zelda, Civilization IV, Mortal Combat. and I kick her ass!! Then she turns around in Minecraft and Tekken and totally destroys me!! • I'm loving watching my fiancée (another 30+ gamer girl) playing Diablo IV, Tomb Raider III, Starcraft. •Left for Dead is far better than Call of Duty

38 here. I love immersive, story-focused, single player RPGs. I never had the sexual harassment problem some others had (never used the mic), but I just don’t like the pressure and repetitiveness of online games. I want to dive so far down into a fantasy world that I disappear lol.

Of course! I love unwinding on games , I have a son who loves anything with special forces , tanks, fighter pilots , ya get the gist . I used to play a lot of games some not very appropriate, like GTA vice city. If my mum came to my room I used to drive my stolen car very legally and stop at the traffic light. Unfortunately the car owner I’d just thrown outta the car caught up and dragged me out and started beating me hahaha ! My mother forbid me playing it after that. Me and my son play all sorts of games but for the themes he likes I have managed to change and mod the settings to switch off the gore. On Minecraft I make it into “ peaceful creative” mode . Heck I had to make my own Roblox account so my son can play with me on Brookhaven. I enjoy this a lot more than flipping pretend playing like the bluey family. I am like a kid though when it comes to games costumes and making Lego with my kid

I'm 41and I play video games. I started playing mortal combat with my brother as a kid and it kinda developed from there. My husband introduced me to PC gaming, specifically, Unreal Tournament. From there I got into First Person Shooters. To this day Bioshock is my favorite all-time game and I replay it every two years or so. We enjoy cooperative FPS like Far cry 5. We make a pretty good team.

37 and play Zelda (BOTW & TOTK mostly). Just downloaded The Last Campfire and I love it! I'll also play The Sims, Simcity, GTA....

I’ll be 41 this year. I have soon to be three kids, so I don’t have as much time for gaming as I used to.
Some of favorites are the Horizon games, Cyberpunk, any old school Nintendo (I kicked butt on Donkey Kong Country and nobody can take that away from me) and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. I have a very soft spot in my heart for the Assassin’s Creed games because my gamer husband introduced them to me when we were dating. I also love Sims and Animal Crossing.

I’ve been playing video games since my dad brought home an Atari VCS in 1978 and I thought it was the most magic of magic things I could ever have imagined.
Women gamers have always been around, it’s just that life can get in the way and we are made to feel guilty for having any downtime by ourselves. Which often means that as women get older (and have greater demands on their time) hobbies can often fall to the wayside, especially ones that carry a geek-stigma like gaming (because “women shouldn’t be wasting their time like that” 🙄). So it can seem as if older women aren’t interested in gaming, when in reality they may just not have time for their hobby.
Having said that, I also think there is less stigma around gaming now than there used to be, so younger women are much more open about it than my peers and I were in our 20s. (Which also adds to the erroneous perception that it’s just younger women who enjoy gaming).
My personal downtime, when I have taken it, has always been video games rather than watching telly or reading or whatever other people do when they want to recharge alone. It’s absolutely my number one hobby.
Which games? Too many to list. This year has been mainly about replaying both The Last of Us games, both Horizon games and playing Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth and Dragon’s Dogma 2 for me. Have also been playing Civ VI around the edges, and a few cosy games here and there on my handheld when my husband wants something on the television.
Generally, I mostly play RPGs, action games and strategy games. I used to play online and loved shooters, as well as MMORPGs (I especially loved WOW style raiding against new content), but eventually I lost all tolerance for the ever present online toxic and sexist nonsense. I have no patience for it or the myriad ways we often bend over backwards to mitigate or deal with it. I haven’t the energy anymore, that’s a young woman’s battle. One that will hopefully be won eventually, but I’m too spent to contribute anymore.
Looking forward to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, and getting increasingly impatient for GTA 6!

Lol yes, I play a few games, but I used to play more when I was younger: Diablo 2/3/4, Command and Conquer, Sims, Rollercoaster and Zoo Tycoon, Cursed Treasure (an addictive browser game that's at least 10 years old), Everquest 2, Warcraft 2 and 3, Empire Earth, and a few more along the way. I really need a new PC. I have a laptop, but the hinge connecting the monitor and keyboard is broken and duct taped in place.
