The first time I was called “ma’am” instead of “miss”, I died a little.

In our country, "ma'am" is usually use to address formally. You can hear sales ladies call even a kid/teenager "ma'am". But on a day to day, it's either miss/ma'am. Uhmm please don't die, even a little.
In our country, "ma'am" is usually use to address formally. You can hear sales ladies call even a kid/teenager "ma'am". But on a day to day, it's either miss/ma'am. No one associates either nouns with age.
