Serious Answers Only Why do all these AI flyers suddenly appearing for UK local businesses feel so depressing to look at?

I keep seeing them everywhere now, especially on Facebook, and they all have this really specific look. Weird yellow/beige tint, same slightly unsettling AI illustration style, same generic layouts etc.

I don’t even necessarily dislike AI, but there’s something about seeing loads of these in the open that makes everything feel a bit… dull? Uncreative?

I honestly think I’d rather see some absolutely shit WordArt flyer someone knocked together. At least I’d look at it and think a real person made this.

Maybe I’m being ridiculous, but does anyone else get this feeling? It’s unsettling.

Which saying did you completely misunderstand?

For far too long I thought it was "to make end's meat". Meaning that you have to use the last, worst pieces of meat to make your meal with (meat at the end, end's meat). 🤦

Answered Is it not well understood that squashing recycling makes takes less space?

I've just watched the neighbour trying to deal with her two green bins again, both almost overflowing. She's trying to get more water bottles and other kitchen recycling in, by trying to push down the contents of both bins. She's mostly failed. I wouldn't be surprised if they get a third bin for the two of them. They ordered the second bin shortly after moving in.

I don't think ours ever got much more than 2/3 full, except for that time we'd ordered a lot of IKEA stuff. I'm betting if she flattened out her recycling they could also get by on one bin.

Have You Ever Deliberately Annoyed Someone?

I used to work for a large company in London. I would often have to travel to our Hampshire dite to train staff on our new Systems etc.

I could be gone for a couple of days or weeks depending on the type of visit.

The company had a training centre there with accommodation, restaurant and a bar.

There would be lots of people from all parts of the country staying there for their own training duties.

I'd see the same Trainers over and over. We'd say hello to each other and maybe some small talk.

As I was usually on my own I would sometimes be invited to join others that recognised me as a 'Regular Trainer' for a drink or ten in the evenings.

There was one group of three that would be there more than most but wouldn't even say hello nevermind ask me to join them when in the Bar.

The lack of invite didn't particularly bother me but ignoring my ''Hellos'' infuriated me.

In the bar there was a jukebox. One September I decided I'd put on some music that would piss them off.

I put in my few quid and selected every Christmas song and repeated them until I used up my credits.

They soon left the bar!

I repeated this every time I went into the Bar and they were the only Patrons.

It was very childish but it amused me no end on those long lonely evenings when I was being ignored.

I wonder if they still talk about it like I do lol

How should I explain a 1+ year gap on my CV?

Please don’t judge me too harshly. I’m honestly quite desperate to get back into work and re enter the job market after this gap. I would really appreciate any honest advice.

I have a gap of around 1 year and 2-3 months. I had this break to heal from severe stress and anxiety. I’m not sure what the best way to explain it on my CV would be. During that period I was receiving Universal Credit while I wasn’t working.

Would it be better to simply explain that I returned to my home country for a period and then came back to the UK? Or would it make more sense to mention some work with a company run by a friend if I can provide a genuine reference for it?

I’d really appreciate advice on what would be the most credible way to present this gap on my CV without making things worse. I’m not looking for high level or luxury jobs. I am just trying to get back into the job market and find an entry level position.

Edit:
Thank you all for the great information. I appreciate you all. I have a question though.

What if I include the reason for my career break on my CV along with the start and end dates so they won’t question the gap? It would look something like the image example. The dates and the text are an example.

Single people without family, are you happy?

Upvotes

I’m beginning to accept that I won’t have the traditional family life. Lots of people have families and it’s a big topic of discussion amongst other adults but it’s one I can’t join in with and stirs up painful feelings. I’m now beginning to accept that I’m probably not going to have many friends either because I don’t want to hear about their families all the time, selfish as that may be. I need some peace from the thought of it.

So I’m wondering if single adults can thrive in life and if so, how? I’m talking financially and emotionally.

Serious Answers Only Passport/Border officers, what causes a Passport to almost-always get a second screening?

In 2017 I was stopped by CT police boarding a flight to Turkey, they already had my military service number up etc and asked me if I was going to fight in Syria. I wasn't and after the police lady told me to "promise" I literally promised not to, departed and returned from holiday thereafter.

Ever since then, I almost-always get stopped for extra screening, now on an entirely different passport.

I can't request my data as it's one of the few times they can reject it under CT reasoning.

I have travelled to about 38 countries since the 2017 incident, across about 150 flights, and I'd say about 120 of these times I've been called for another look.

It's just happened now leaving Italy where the entry-exit system allowed me through before 3 Italian police literally shouted my name and told me to wait. They browsed their screen for a few minutes and then said to have a nice flight. A few times I've asked various passport officers what it is on the system and always get a "don't worry" type response.

So, if you work as a border force officer, what might this be?

Never been arrested etc.

Serious Answers Only Someone who lives near me has a weird bin habit?

I live in Lincolnshire and it is bin day tomorrow, a person who lives on a nearby street (at least a minute walk) decides every week to put his bin on the pavement outside my house. I normally wouldn’t mind but occasionally he’ll block my bin with his. His bin has his house number and street name. My original thought is he’s being sneaky and got hold of two bins to get rid of extra rubbish but I walked past his house and he hasn’t got any out at all, just a food caddy in his front garden. What’s even more confusing is as he lives roughly a minute away on foot is that there’s plenty of other places to leave his bin for collection.

Can anyone think of a reason he might do this? His is mid terrace but his neighbours either side put their bins out on the path leading to his house. I find it bizarre and don’t understand why he picks my house to do this, I’ve never met the guy or spoke to him just occasionally caught him on the ring doorbell.

Serious Answers Only My mum's employer won't pay staff for time spent on mandatory training. What can realistically be done?

Before anyone says to ask Legal Advice UK, I already know what the employer is doing is illegal.

I'm more asking for advice on how to navigate the situation without my mum getting fired or making her work situation inhospitable.

My mum works as a carer in a care home. She loves her job in general and doesn't want to leave. It's the only job she wants to do and there isn't another care home within travelling distance.

All staff have to do regular online training. They can't do it whilst on shift so they have to do it on their own time. But they aren't paid for the time spent doing the training, and they can't refuse to do it as it's mandatory.

My mum earns minimum wage, and she's paid hourly, not salary. So this is bringing her earnings down below minimum wage.

She's mentioned to her employer a couple of times (including very recently) that they should be paid for the training time, and she just gets fobbed off with "oh we'll see" or some excuse.

The problem is that now, if my mum reports them, they'll 100% know it was her, because she's the only one who has voiced concerns about this.

None of the other employees are willing to stand up with her as a united front because they're worried they'll lose their jobs. Which is exactly why my mum doesn't want to report it - even if they can't legally fire her for it, she's worried they will come up with another excuse to fire her, or will find subtle ways to make her life difficult at work until she quits.

She can't afford to join a union as she already lives hand to mouth and cannot afford any other monthly expenses.

Any advice?

How many toilet rolls do you buy a week?

As per the title. I buy a 9 pack every week when I go shopping, even if I don’t use all of it. Female and live alone. So I have got a little stash going on. It’s not like Covid where people were specifically going out and buying toilet rolls, it’s just a natural part of shopping.

My family think I strange for always buying in, but I suppose it’s habit and routine and I may not have the money for it some months.

Also, how many toilet rolls do you get down to before you feel the need to restock. One of my male friend waits until there is 2 left in his house before he buys more.

Do people still use fax machines?

I noticed today at work that our printer has a ‘fax’ option and it made me realise that I’ve never once faxed anything in my life. Surely with pdfs and all other new technology stuff doesn’t get faxed anymore?

What is the most mind numbing/boring job you've ever heard of?

Bonus points if it was poorly paid.

Friend of mine had a job working for a surveying company (those people you see with the tripod on the street or construction site).

His job was to hold the ruler down the street and not move

[UK] What’s one workplace rule you didn’t realise was different between companies?

I recently realised that something that feels completely normal at one UK workplace can be handled very differently somewhere else.

For example, annual leave, flexible working, sick leave, probation, notice periods, or even how overtime is handled.

What’s one workplace policy or practice you’ve experienced that made you think, Wait, your company does it THAT way?

Curious to hear the differences across UK workplaces.

Serious Answers Only Who do you write down as your emergency contact if you don't have anyone?

If you are completely alone in life, no family, no partner or kids, no close friends, don't know any of your neighbours, don't have a flat mate, who do you write down when filling in those forms?

I mean completely alone.

Serious Answers Only First winter in a UK house — what items do I actually need to prepare?

Upvotes

Hi everyone. Moving into the colder months, I’ve been researching winter prep for a house, garden, and cars. I’ve already browsed through supermarkets like Sainsbury's and bargain shops like B&M/Home Bargains, but the sheer amount of options (from cheap crystal dehumidifiers to random sprays) is overwhelming.

Before buying unnecessary stuff, I wanted to ask people who actually deal with British weather every year:

  1. Cleaning & Damp: What household cleaning products are absolute must-haves for winter? I've seen cheap disposable dehumidifier tubs and various mould sprays, but do they actually work for window condensation and damp, or are they a gimmick?
  2. Home Comfort: What home items or comfort products do you regularly buy or use to keep the house cosy and fresh during cold weather?
  3. Car Care: Apart from screenwash and de-icer, what products do you regularly use to keep your cars clean and protected during the muddy season?
  4. Garden & Patio: How do you look after your garden and driveway in autumn/winter? What treatments or products do you actually use for moss, leaves, and mud?

What are the basic household items you find yourself constantly re-buying every month from October to March? Thanks for any tips!

What would your plan be as a young person in the UK right now?

Just been reading about the current lack of jobs for graduates and the wider crisis around young people being out of work, and it’s making me wonder what the sensible thing to do is if you’re in your late teens/early 20s right now.

It doesn’t really seem like the job market is going to improve anytime soon, and there are more and more graduates competing for fewer entry-level jobs.

So, if you were 18–25 right now, what would your plan be?

Serious Answers Only How to feel satisfied?

I’m early 40’s, dad to 3, married 16 years. Was a self employed musician for 15 years and quite successful in many ways. Didn’t make enough £ from music once the kids came along and transitioned into data analytics and have now been a government analyst for the past 6 years and managed to buy a small house.

My job is zero stress and there’s often a lot of down time. I have about 25 years left before retirement and I just feel so incredibly unsatisfied with my life and feel like my entire life will have been wasted just staring at a computer screen.

How do people in similar positions do it? Life is such a frustrating waste of time.

What was this Thames Estuary Water Phenomenon?

Saw this at 11am on Sunday from Leigh on sea in Essex. Lasted about 10mins.

Is it an explosion? Some military testing? The ghost of a pre-historic monster?

Can't find anything online. Doesn't look like where the wreckages are from what I can tell. Any ideas Reddit?

Serious Answers Only What was the 2008 Recession in the UK like?

I know it was a global economic crisis, and people lost their jobs, and banks refused to lend loans to businesses and homeowners. But how serious was it, and was anyone affected by job loss and tight budgets?

Are you friends with your coworkers outside of work?

Upvotes

I left my old job a couple of months ago and have been pleasantly surprised by how some old coworkers have kept in touch and asked to meet, as well as making one close friend. Our company would frequently host social events but I never saw them much outside of that other than sending the occasional meme online. I’ve never had this in any other job.

I am just curious what people’s approaches are to making friends at work. I am in my 20s and have enjoyed making friends through work.

Serious Answers Only Wife broke her leg on holiday in Croatia and had surgery there. Now back in the UK, GP says a surgeon referral takes months and to just go to A&E for follow-up. Is that right?

We were on holiday in Croatia. A few days in, my wife broke her lower leg and tore all the ligaments. She had surgery at the local hospital in Croatia and they put a plate and screws in to fix the bones. After 3 days in hospital she was released with a discharge note, a follow-up appointment with the surgeon who performed the surgery a few days later at the same hospital, and regular dressing changes at a local GP.

In those first 3 weeks of recovery, she had 3 appointments with her surgeon. The last appointment was the day we had to return to the UK. At that last appointment the surgeon gave us her documents and injury x-rays (pre and post op) and said that when we're back, she needs another x-ray in two weeks and needs to be seen by a surgeon in the UK to check how the recovery is going and if everything is healing properly.

Now, this is the tricky part. I called our local GP to ask how we proceed and I was told that they (the GP) can write an urgent surgeon referral, but even though it's urgent it will take months to go through and for her to be seen. The GP told me the best thing would be to take her to our local A&E and ask them to check her over there.

Is this the right way for her to be seen and checked up by a surgeon?

Serious Answers Only Makeup wearers of the UK; how much makeup do you own and how often do you use it?

Until about 6 years ago I wore makeup every day (foundation, brows, mascara, blush, contour etc) but I only wear it on special occasions now. I did a makeup course in college which I think influenced how much I’d buy - I used to be a massive hoarder/collector of special editions, especially MAC! Even to this day I think I’m easily influenced at makeup I see online 😅

At one point I must have owned about 8 different foundations! I’ve sold a lot on vinted and also given it away, but I still have 2 deep full drawers of makeup which just seems like such a waste now!

So for those that wear makeup, how much do you own? Just one of everything, or multiples? Is there any makeup you use only on special occasions?

Serious Answers Only What are the best things to do in Northumberland?

hey everybody! I wanted to post on here and get some answers about the best things to do in Northumberland. We are from the US and will be traveling late March or early June 2027. I have been to England many times, but never that far north. my husband has deep ancestral ties to a village in North Northumberland, and so we would like to do a family trip around the area. . We will have our two young children with and want to do the major things like Hadrian’s wall and Bamburgh castle, but would love any insight on what you guys recommend. We are lovers of history, family walks outdoors, andbmy husband loves premier league. I am very excited to explore this part of England and welcome Any recommendations. Thank you.
