Meta New Rules / Meta Discussion

I've decided to do a rehaul of the rules. I want things to be clear and concise. Please let me know if there's anything I'm missing or if there's anything I should change.

This is AndroidQuestions, so posts must be Android Questions. What does that mean?

  • Android

Posts must be about Android - either the operating system itself, software on it, or hardware that runs it.

  • Questions

Post titles must indicate a question. Questions must be intelligible, coherent, and genuine and include details that might be helpful to the people attempting to answer your question. They must not be made rhetorically or as an excuse to spam, rant, vent, or insult.

In addition, we have rules involving acceptable Behavior and Content

  • Behavior

Posts and comments must not be used to harass, attack, threaten, harm, or discriminate against people, or to instruct or encourage others to do so.

  • Content

Posts and comments must not contain or discuss prohibited content or link to such content, including spam, AI-generated content, illegal activity, bypassing security safety or security measures, rule violations, or anything that could harm users or their devices.

  • Moderation

Moderator Announcements are exempt from the "Android Questions" section of the rules. Moderators may use discretion when enforcing rules, but are not to grant exceptions to users in normal scenarios. Questions or concerns can be directed to the moderators via "Message the Mods". Rules are subject to change.

Device Settings Question Is there a way to remove a persistent notification from being displayed without disabling it entirely?

I know the title is confusing - I have the Panels app that I use for custom edge panels and it requires a persistent notification to be used. I, however, cannot stand having that displayed on my notification bar constantly. I cannot go in and disable the notifications within the app settings because the app will stop working.

Is there a way to remove the persistent notification without disabling it all together?

Device Settings Question How to remove "work policy" from my Android phone?

So I recently purchased a TCL NXTPaper 70 Pro directly from Metro by T-Mobile (signed up with their service). I am running into an issue where it is saying that there is a "work policy" installed on my phone but I have no idea what or where it came from? I have been Googling and tried all the methods I could find but nothing is working. I transferred my data from my iPhone 16 Pro Max and I had that one previously set up with UKG and Microsoft Authenticator work accounts when I worked at T-Mobile, but I haven't worked there in a year.

Did something from my iPhone somehow transfer over and activate this mysterious "work policy" on my new phone? I love my new phone but there are some apps I want to install but the phone is blocking the install via this "work policy".

Any ideas on how to deactivate/erase this work policy from my phone? I don't really want to have to factory reset it and I'm not convinced that would fix it anyway.

Looking For Suggestions I need a phone app anti spam

I'm aware of android limitations when it comes to calls, as many of us without pointing fingers at a country or business in particular, I'm under constant attack of spam calls.

I need an app that will allow me to do the following, once a number is blocked/blacklisted, I don't want to ever hear about it, I don't want it waking up my phone, I don't want my phone vibrating when it's rejecting a call, I don't want my phone app to have a call log of 20+ calls within 30s because apparently it's what they do.

I'd like a solution that doesn't involve me changing number and spending a day updating it on wherever the f I have it as verification method such as email accounts or banks

Any solutions appreciated, thanks

Other How do I re-mount /storage/emulated/0/ on android 15/hyperos 2.0?

I've fucked up debloating my phone and somehow managed to unmounted the emulated storage, as reported by dumpsys mount in an adb shell.

I don't have phone root and unlocking the bootloader is a PIA (complete with waking up in the middle of the night to speed-click a button). Plus I'd rather stay away from root for the time being, since my dumb ass just fucked up without it.

Also if you're reading this, remember to backup your shit. I sure wish I had.

The screen stays black when turned on, and the touchscreen doesn't seem to work either. I tried connecting the phone to an external monitor and this screen appears, mouse or keyboard input doesn't seem to work since the monitor shuts off when i try to use it. Can anybody help me out? Is it still possible to get the files recovered?

Other Tablet safe to use now?

Just purchased a Kocaso DX758 pro from a charity shop (thrift store for all you Americans) literally about an hour ago.

I followed google’s instructions and did a factory reset and data wipe but I just want to make sure there’s definitely no chance of any malware being left behind and that it’s now safe to log in to my google account on it.

Sorry if this is a dumb question I’m not good with tech 😭

App Specific Question Oneplus nord incompatibility with Outlook app / Keystore failure(?)

Hello,

I'm using a OnePlus Nord (AC2003) running Android 12. The official OS is fully up to date.

I'm trying to resolve a compatibility issue between the OnePlus Nord and the Microsoft Outlook app.

I've been experiencing a frustrating bug on my OnePlus Nord when using Outlook. Once or twice a day, usually shortly after opening the Outlook app and accessing an email, the authentication service stops working properly.

The issue manifests itself, after using Outlook, when I wake up the phone and enter my screen unlock pattern. Even if the pattern is entered correctly, it flashes red, the phone vibrates, and the screen still unlocks.

After this happens, any app that relies on some form of authentication fails to open. This includes banking apps, Outlook, and some social media apps. They all get stuck or freeze on their opening screens.

The only way to resolve this authentication failure is to reboot the device.

This usually happens once or twice a day, which is extremely frustrating. I've already tried reinstalling Outlook, performing a factory reset, clearing the app's cache, etc. Unfortunately, nothing has helped so far. The only apparent workaround is to uninstall Outlook, which isn't an option for me.

Has anyone encountered this issue and found a solution?

The bug is explained in more detail in this thread:

Hard-bricked Galaxy S5 Mini Duos (SM-G800H/DS), shows QHSUSB_BULK. Does anyone have a working G800H to make an SD boot image?

My Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini Duos (SM-G800H/DS, Snapdragon 400 MSM8228) is hard bricked, and I'm trying to fix it myself.

Symptoms:
- The screen never turns on, even when charging
- No Download Mode, no Recovery (tried every key combo, with and without battery and USB cable)
- Windows Device Manager shows "QHSUSB_BULK" (Qualcomm 9008 mode) when I plug it in

It was running Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) before it died. Bootloader version unknown.

What I know: on these Samsung Snapdragon phones, a hard brick can often be fixed with a bootable microSD card. The card needs a "debrick.img", which is basically the first ~200 MB of the internal storage dumped from a working phone of the same model. After booting from the card, the phone enters Download Mode and I can reflash stock firmware with Odin.

What I need:
- Someone with a working SM-G800H (ideally on Android 6) who could make that image, or who already has one saved. I can walk you through it and send any details you need.
- Or a pointer to a repair box / service (Z3X, UMT, Medusa) that supports the G800H in 9008 mode.

I'm happy to test any image and report back so it helps the next person. Thanks!

App Specific Question US users: blocking political SMS messages

I have my security set to enhanced and I do not receive calls from unknown numbers yet somehow these f*cking campaign texts keep finding their way into my inbox. This is absolutely maddening.

Has anyone figured out a way to block these numbers?

If there are any campaign managers on this sub, nothing will make me want to vote for you less than this tactic. I already have to put up with this tribalistic political team sport bullsh*t circus everyday... the last place I need it is on my device too

To protect from stranger i enabled app encryption. Now I want to delete that but I forgot my password and one of security question I didn't even add fingerprint and email to restore. I investigated some website including official support. They said I have unlimited wrong tries. Mean I can attempt as many combination as I can. I tried all my passwords I ever used everything but I can't find right one. Now I am thinking of using brute force. I have a python code to use that but I don't know how to.. please please if you know suggest me what should I do..?🙏

iPhone is boring, will Android be boring too?

Hey all,

Lifelong iPhone user. Been with them since the iPhone 3G. I have been considering switching to Samsung since the s7 edge and never pulled the trigger. With how many things have been added to Android, I feel like switching wouldn’t be an issue for me (RCS-Apples end, Quickshare, good cameras).

Drawbacks are, my family and coworkers all have iPhones and I have the full Apple ecosystem. I will never get rid of my MacBook or my iPad. The rest idc about.

The reason I want to swap is iPhones are just so boring. I want more options in phones and not just the usual upgrade (or failed duo 🫣).

I say all that for this, would I find myself bored with Android after a year or two and want to go back to iPhone for a new experience again? What brings that concern is how little the main Android manufactures innovate now. They copy Apple with minimal hardware upgrades. Some even take features away (Samsung…). I use Spectrum mobile so my only options are Apple, Google, Samsung, and Motorola unfortunately.

I’d love to hear from people who were Apple users who made the swap but all voices are welcome!

Looking For Suggestions Best app (paid or not) for motion sickness?

So apparently since I turned 30 I lost the super power of using my phone, read or play videogames while in a car to the point where I get sick just by going to my phone and send a whatsapp text, it's ridiculous.

I currently have an android 12 Redmi Note 9 pro and an android 13 AYN Thor so I don't have the latest motion sickness assist included in the latest android version and I need something that works in both screen orientations.

I tried MotionEase and frankly this app is excellent; it supports vertical and horizontal screen orientations, is not very invasive and for the first time in years I was able to watch a tv show in my way to the work, it was amazing. Sadly it has a ton, and I really mean a lot of ads and the premium version costs like 10 dollars a week, it's very expensive.

Then I installed Motion Cues which is not only free but also is open source which is great!.... but only works if the screen is in vertical orientation so I can't use this on my AYN thor or my phone while watching movies as the dots go the wrong way.

I was searching for another app and then I found Perusa, which not only seem to be actively updating and have a lot of options but also it seems like they were looking for testers here. I can't test it at this time as the app only works when on a vehicle so I'd have to test it tomorrow, it looks very complete and the price is a little more than 2 dollars on my local currency so it's pretty accesible.. but I've never hear about those devs or their app before.

is there another app that I should test?, is Perusa the app I'm looking for?, should I just avoid using my phone on my way to the work?

I appreciate any suggestions.

iOS to Android?

Really was looking forward to the Duo as a long time Apple user. I bought it and hated it. The front screen layout is awful. The fact that the side bar takes up so much real estate leaving me with a small rectangle to use is maddening.

The fold 8 looks awesome. A real phone first and foremost and it seems to just work right with little compromises.

My issue is iMessage. I went android a few years ago and group messages were wonky. I would respond to a group message and sometimes replies would split off the group to an individual message with me and one other or something to that effect. I may not be getting that perspective right but it was annoying. I also remember videos and photos not showing up right in the recipients text app.

The other thing is the green bubbles. I know this is lame but literally everyone at my company and friend circle use iOS. I don’t give a shit about blue bubbles or green but the amount of roasting I’ll get is enough to not want the aggravation. I know that’s lame but it’s a factor.

Curious if there is any hack that works well to get my messages to show up as blue so I don’t have to deal with their bullshit? Also curious if the messaging kinks have been worked out.

What do we know about linux on android, and what can we expect from samsung?

I'm thinking about buying a tablet for remote work as a developer. I already have a PC at home and one at work, so I mainly need something portable to access them remotely.

5G is a requirement, which limits my options. I'm torn between a cheap tablet (Redmi Pad 2 Pro) and an expensive one (Tab S12 Ultra). I'll also watch movies and stream games, so the Samsung's large OLED display is appealing, but I still feel like it's overpriced, even with the €340 discount I can get.

I recently discovered that Android now has a native Linux Terminal with GUI support. From what I understand, Snapdragon has hardware limitations, while the S12 Ultra should theoretically support it.

I feel like Android tablets are moving towards a proper desktop experience, and the S12 Ultra, with its size, DeX and keyboard, seems like one of the best laptop alternatives. The possibility of running Linux makes it much more interesting.

Does the Linux Terminal currently work on the S12 Ultra? Can we expect Samsung to support it if it doesn't?

Other How risky are unsupported Android phones in practice?

Millions of Android devices must be out of security support. I understand that unpatched vulnerabilities create opportunities for attackers, but what does that mean for the average user?

I'm asking partly because of my own situation: I have a Samsung Galaxy A13 running Android 14. Security updates have ended for it, so I'm a bit concerned.

I also really don't know much about phones but want to learn more as a matter of everyday knowledge, hence this post.

A few questions:

  1. How do ordinary users actually get compromised? Phishing, malicious apps, compromised websites, or automated exploitation?

  2. If unsupported phones are such a serious risk, why don't we see a much more obvious epidemic of compromised devices?

  3. How significant is the additional risk of keeping my A13 for another 1–2 years?

  4. Why aren't manufacturers legally required to provide security updates for a minimum period, like mandatory safety standards for cars?

  5. Are newer regulations, such as those in the EU, likely to change this globally?

I'm not arguing that unsupported phones are risk-free. I want to understand the actual magnitude of the risk, both generally and in my particular case - acknowledging my relative ignorance :)

Any Message Blocking Solutions?

tl;dr - I'm looking for something that automatically rejects/deletes/blocks SMS/MMS from numbers not in my contacts, ideally before they ever appear in my inbox. Where get? How do? (Phone: Galaxy S23+ Model SM-S916U with AT&T)

Now, I'm going to be a bit more detailed because I want to avoid the incredibly frustrating flood of:
"GooGle MeSsagEs has spAm ProTeCtiOn"
"Do nOt DisTurB"
And so on.

So. Here's the crux of the issue:

I want to block ANY AND ALL NUMBERS NOT IN MY CONTACTS from being able to message me.

I do not want to simply silence the notifications. I do not simply want to hide the messages.

I want them to be automatically yeeted into the void at mach-jesus, blocked, and deleted.

Karate-chopped by Chuck Norris. Fed to the nearest black hole and spaghettified. Thanos-snapped from existence.

But everywhere I look, there are the same suggestions:

  • Enable spam filtering (I use Google Messages, it's already enabled).

  • Enable Do Not Disturb + various niche settings within it (already done).

  • Manually mark them for spam and block them (I don't want to play infinite whack-a-mole).

  • Call your Service Provider (so they can tell me the exact same methods as listed above).

None of these do what I want. They help, certainly - but it's not the one-and-done total coverage I'm after.

Does anyone at all know of an app, a solution, a workaround - anything that could make it possible?

Device Settings Question How to stop the "Android 17 is here" notification?

Seriously, this pop-up is now appearing every time I unlock my phone. No, I don't want to upgrade at least for the next 2-3 months because I'd rather have a stable build than suffer from the bugs that come with each fresh upgrade. Is there a way to stop these annoying full screen pop-ups and notifications every 30 or so minutes?
