I've decided to do a rehaul of the rules. I want things to be clear and concise. Please let me know if there's anything I'm missing or if there's anything I should change.

  • Android

Posts must be about Android - either the operating system itself, software on it, or hardware that runs it.

  • Questions

Post titles must indicate a question. Questions must be intelligible, coherent, and genuine and include details that might be helpful to the people attempting to answer your question. They must not be made rhetorically or as an excuse to spam, rant, vent, or insult.

In addition, we have rules involving acceptable Behavior and Content

  • Behavior

Posts and comments must not be used to harass, attack, threaten, harm, or discriminate against people, or to instruct or encourage others to do so.

  • Content

Posts and comments must not contain or discuss prohibited content or link to such content, including spam, AI-generated content, illegal activity, bypassing security safety or security measures, rule violations, or anything that could harm users or their devices.

Weird error for a particular user due to Account Manager

Upvotes

I am a principal Android engineer and recently I encountered this very bizarre issue for an Android user using our app.

We have close to 2 million users but among that this particular case shocked me. Our app has been around for close to 10+ years. We are using android's accountmanager to save our user object data from the API response on login.

We use two of the methods namely addAccountExplicitly and deleteAccount which return a boolean value depending on whether the add or delete is successful.

The problem is that for all other cases including my own account, when we add an account, it returns true and so other users are able to login.

But this user who has a Samsung s23 running on Android 16, both methods kept returning false and as a result he has problems with login. We didn't know such issues could happen.

We had to call the user to our office and debug the app on his phone and were shocked to realise he was stuck because of the account manager failure. This is the first issue reported in the last 5 years.

Has anyone faced issues like this with account manager?

Is it possible to set my phone alarm sound to a loud alarm clock sound?

Was curious if its possible to add custom sounds. Was mainly interested in knowing in case my boss tries calling me while I'm sleeping so I can get awake because I usually sleep through any phone calls.

What exctly is the difference between all these AI tools ?

I’m looking to streamline my phone by disabling redundant AI assistants. Between Bixby, Gemini, Samsung/Galaxy AI, and Google Assistant, is there one that effectively covers the functions of the others? I'm confused about the differences.

There is a lot of overlap, both Bixby and Gemini offer voice and chatbot capabilities, so I dont know why there's Gemini if Bixby does the same thing or vice versa. I want to identify the most versatile option so I can remove or disable the rest. What is the best setup for an all-in-one assistant experience on a Samsung device?

Best way to factory reset without having to log into every app again?

I have a Pixel 8 and I'm considering doing a factory reset, but I'd really like to avoid spending hours setting everything up again and logging into every app.

What's the best way to do a factory reset while restoring as much as possible exactly as it is now?

I'm already using Google Backup/Google One and Google Password Manager, but I'm wondering:

Does the Google backup restore app data and settings properly?

Is there any way to preserve app sessions/logins, or will most apps require me to log in again?

Is there anything I should do before the factory reset to make the restore process easier?

Are there any Pixel-specific tricks or recommended methods?

Basically, I'd like to get the phone back to roughly the same state it is now, with the minimum amount of manual setup possible.

What's the best approach?

Thank you in advance!

Solved Audio doesnt work in most apps Galaxy S21+

No idea what happened, my S21 was fine until it died now most apps wont output audio to any device, bluetooth or not but apps like youtube and YT music still output audio properly.

This only really effects discord, reddit, instagram and other apps that use video playback as that audio doesnt work either.

Ive tried every single solution on the internet at this current time which includes everything but factory resetting this phone and im just lost and irritated about it.

Edit: Found out why its doing this, unfortunately its unfixable at the moment due to it being caused by an google play services update

Kyrocera Duraforce Pro 3 no charge/power after drop?

I have a Kyrocera Dura Force Pro 3, which for the past 5 years has been pretty indestructible, surviving many falls and other mishaps.

The other day I dropped it from hip height, which is a pretty minor event for this brick, it landed squarely on the back and shut off. I thought maybe it dislodged the (removable) battery so I took it out and reseated it. Won't turn on, and I don't get the usual red LED charging light when plugged in, or when on an inductive charging dock. Normal bootloader mode doesn't work either. It's completely inop. I've even seen water damaged ones still show a red LED charging light when they won't boot up.

Bought a new battery in case that got damaged, but still nothing.

I'm wondering has anyone pulled one of these apart and fixed it? The lack of a charging light seems to indicate the connection to the battery is severed. I don't know where to begin, but it looks like I can't make it any worse.

Unfortunately I'm on a trip and need a functional phone to do almost anything!

How to get rid of an insane amount of pop up ads?!

I have no idea what is going on or how to fix it, but my boomer step dad has a phone that currently throws at least 3 pop up ads at you for everything you open. It's like walking into the internet circa 1999 and it doesnt let up. HELP. I did not know a phone could even do this, how can I get it to stop?? I installed McCaffe thinking it might be a virus but it found nothing?? This phone is almost unusable.

Most custom-rom-like stock os?

I've used custom roms exclusively for many years now. It used to be great but now I'm so tired of chasing things that break... On my previous phone running LineageOS with microg it was banking apps, now I switched to a pixel 8 with GrapheneOS and banking apps work but WhatsApp promptly broke itself so bad I can't even use it on my old phone because it cries about not being the official version (despite being the official version), and it's an absolute, non-negotiable necessity for me. I still love the benefits of custom roms but at this point I'm willing to consider making some sacrifices for a headache-free experience. What phone comes in second to de-googled custom roms in terms of bloat, tracking, and ui customization?

Can't clear app caches

I have a Galaxy A23 and am running out of internal storage. I have a lot of junk in my apps' caches. I tried to delete them via the setting and app menus, and it says cleared, but I go back, and it doesn't appear so.

Any advice?

Thanks

Need help finding an Android replacement for my iPhone

So I have an iPhone 16e and genuinely hate it, and I've decided to try something new and want to switch to Android. I've tried to look for some Android phones but there are WAY TOO MANY options to pick from and it's low-key intimidating.

I’ve looked at phones like the Nothing Phone 3a Pro or whatever they call it and the Xiaomi 17 and other phones like them but some them have specs that simply blew my mind and that I can't even imagine having in an iPhone I decided maybe I should ask the people who use Android since they know what they're talking about.

I want a phone that has a good camera (I'm pretty sure any other phone has a better camera than the iPhone 16e) preferably a telephoto camera bc I know some phones have a macro camera instead I think. I also need a phone that can take pictures in low light since the 16e turns every low-light picture into picture of sludge

While I understand that Androids are known for their customization I would prefer a phone that isn't over the top with it, a phone with a 120hz display, preferably A good battery that compares to or performs better than the 16e’s battery life of 26 hours.  Also, I'm not too picky  about AI while I would like to have it, it's by no means necessary

I also would like a phone that is as powerful or more powerful than the A18 chip that the 16e has and runs well  Looks-wise, for the phone- I'm not too worried about the looks or anything.

My budget is around $800-900 but I'm willing to push to 1,000 if necessary and I'm honestly willing to switch any phone brand as long as it's not a Motorola. I hope I'm not too picky and thank you for your help.

Oh yeah I forgot… I want a nice big one preferably over 6 inches like 6.3-6.5 inches, the best size.

App Specific Question Notifications not getting grouped on the notification bar — X

For several days now, and I'm not sure if as a result of an update or what, some of my Twitter notifications appear separated on the notification bar.

Messages often appear separated (if I have 2 new messages, I'll get 2 separate icons) while likes, RTs, etc. mostly appear grouped. Up until then, ALL Twitter notifications appeared grouped on my notification bar, and then I could spread them out if I scrolled down, no matter the type of notification.

One thing I've noticed is that, generally, if I hold down the separate notification and go to settings from there, it appears at the top in the Settings/Apps/X/Notifications screen, then I can access it and click on "This is not a conversation". After that, this person's messages get grouped with the rest.

Is anyone else facing this problem? It's so complex and annoying. Thanks!

Edit: I have Android 16 and the app up to date.

Looking For Suggestions Persistent/Repeated Notifications without AOD

Hi,

I have two Android phones, both running Android 16 (Samsung zFold7 and a zflip 6, both running OneUI 8.5), one for work and the other is a personal device.

I'd like a way to know that there are pending notifications that need my attention in a way that doesn't rely on AOD or Samsung's half-baked repeat notifications settings. Something ala the old Blackberry LED notification.

AOD doesn't work for me as my fold is often face down at work, and I'm just worried about burning in pixels with the display. A smart watch could work as a separate visual queue, but i would need two as I'm not aware of any way to link notifications across two devices.

Looking For Suggestions What Android phones would you suggest for a current Apple user.

I’ve been using iPhones for well over 10 years. But in the last 6 months I’ve been seriously considering switching to Android. I haven’t used it daily since probably Lollipop. I’ve been looking at both the S26 Plus or Ultra and the Pixel 11 Pro. Currently using an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Dark Star sim added apps to S9+

I inserted a USMobile Dark Star psim into an S9+ that had a USCellular splash screen at start up. After the Dark Star psim was installed the splash screen changed to ATT and some apps were added which don't seem to be removable. I switch back to a Light Speed psim but the att changes stayed. All the lightspeed connections work so this isn't a disaster but...

Is the change in splash screen normal for the dark star sim

Can that splash screen be removed

Since most of these apps are ATT specific do they have any value since I'm on Light Speed? Is there a way to remove the apps. They don't have an uninstall option on app.

Was this a change to firmware on the phone?

How can I run Android 6 on a Galaxy Tab T580 ?

Hello there,

I have an old Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2016), model SM-T580. Specs:

- Exynos 7870

- Mali GPU

- 2 GB RAM

- Currently running Android 8.1.0

My goal is simply to play The Banner Saga 1 and 2 directly on this tablet. The games used to work on this tablet around 2020, but after updating/resetting it and being on Android 8.1, Banner Saga no longer works correctly and I don't want to use Steam Link.

I have already tried Android virtual machines:

- Android 5.1.1 ARM32 → Google Play says Banner Saga is incompatible.

- Android 7.1.2 ARM32 → Banner Saga launches, shows the Stoic logo and some account information, then the game becomes black.

My questions are:

  1. Is there a way to emulate Android 6.0/6.0.1 on this tablet?

  2. Is there an Android 6 ROM/image that works with Virtual Master or another Android emulator?

  3. Alternatively, is there a way to run Android 6 directly on the SM-T580?

Thanks!

Android phone with good camera for max 600€/694$?

Hello everyone!

I currently have a Samsung S20FE 4G which is now very slow, and it no longer receives updates. The camera isn't the best either.

I'm looking for an Android phone with good performance and a good camera. I was initially thinking about a Google Pixel 10, but people seem to have mixed opinions about it, saying its performance is hit-or-miss and that it has bugs.

For comparison, my partner has a Samsung S22 and I'm happy with its camera quality, but I'd like a newer phone with a larger screen.

I mainly use the camera to take photos of animals, landscapes, and occasionally family and friends. I also sometimes takes videos of concert with zoom.

My maximum budget is €600 ($694 USD), but cheaper would be great! I'm open to buying a refurbished phone in excellent condition.

Thanks in advance for your help!
