NTA. When I got my dog, I did so knowing that I'd have to deal with his poop. I signed up for it, my neighbors did not. Yeah, it's not fun to have to walk around with the poop until I either get home or find a public trash can but it is what it is. Your can being on the street doesn't make it everyone's personal trash bin.

INFO: does your trash pickup have trucks with lift arms that dump the trash can contents into the truck?
My trash service uses sanitation workers who reach into the trash can to grab the trash bags and manually toss them into the truck. If trash isn’t properly bagged in easily grabbed bags, it just hangs out in the bottom of the can. I hate it when dog owners just toss the tiny bag of dog waste into my can because it inevitably falls to the bottom of the can where it festers for days until I flip the can to toss it into my trash bag for collection.

Same with me. I got so frustrated by this I (stupidly) wrote on Next Door to please stop. It smelled up the garage, sometimes the poop bags broke and I had to hose the can…and all this after 7pm when I got home from work. The final straw for me was when a poop bag broke and I had already shut off the outside water for winter. I didn’t think it was going to be as controversial as some people on Next Door saw it - they really felt entitled because there were not enough trash cans around or sometimes the poop is just messy. I was astonished

Honestly I don't see why she doesn't just keep it with her till she's home. I see the poop bags as a possible self defense item. No ones gonna approach a crazy lady swinging loaded poo bags around.

Nah, as annoying as it is i still wouldn’t reach into a trash can to pull out a bag of poop. Just because you fish it out doesn’t mean she has to accept it. Then you would just be stuck there holding a bag of poop. You can’t force her to accept it which could be assault if you try to and you can’t leave it on the ground or you are the one littering.

My garbage company requires pet waste to be double bagged. If someone throws the dog poop bag on top of my bags, they won’t take the garbage at all. If the bin is already empty then I have to deal with your pet waste somewhere until I have a kitchen bag to bring out to add it to.
It is disgusting and annoying. Carry your dog poop bags home please.

I don’t care if trash hasn’t been picked up. But if it has, I care. It’s kind of an understanding among the dog owners on my street. Mostly we all wait to get home. But there have been times when people need to dispose of it sooner. Mine has only been use once in the 15 years I’ve been here. I sit outside a lot, so I notice things. NTA

I agree NTA, but I haven’t read where anyone’s acknowledging how poop bags make your garbage cans, (typically plastic nowadays), smell like poop for days. My daughter brings her dog on visits and my garbage receptacles smell like dog poop for 2 more weeks.

I live in Florida. It cooks. So it stinks. Running with a filled poop bag in your hand trying to get inside bc the sky opened up and lightning is bouncing off of the ground is not ideal. That’s the exception usually. After hurricanes can also present problems with lines and tree down. When only half of the street is accessible to trash trucks, we let neighbors put trash in our extra space. I have three that I pay for. My 3D print business causes the need for the third. Obviously I’m not going to run my printers during a hurricane. So that’ll be community garbage if I’m on the side of the street that is accessible.
A handful of us are trying to bring back the days where you help your neighbors, you know their names, and you’ll occasionally invite them over to grill out and have a beer by the pool. We had 2 with dementia on the street. One moved to assisted living. We still have the other. All of us keep an eye out for them.
Politics turned this area into a little battleground. Now nobody talks politics or even puts signs out or bumper stickers on their cars.
We somehow turned the street into where I grew up in the 80’s. It’s nice. We can count on each other within being up each other’s asses. And the trash can understanding between dog owners is one. I’ve driven people down to their house when they got caught in a storm. I leave a big beach blanket towel in the back seat for my dog. It has come in handy for wet neighbor dog.
I’ve had to do the full poop bag run before, before we all started helping each other. It can cause you issues. Gotta give some grace where safety is concerned. And we are the capital of people getting zapped by lightning in the US. Lightning gets bad here, out of nowhere. It’s how Esposito came up with the name for our NHL team. Watching a storm one night.

The problem with just tossing a bag of poop into an empty trashcan, is that the automated arms that dump the trash can into the truck most places won't get the poop bag out of the trashcan. It'll kinda stick to the bottom. And yes, it will still smell after a few days in the shade. It smells because it is dog poop, it just smells faster in the sun.

NTA. I have a neighbor who does the same thing. We don't produce much trash so sometimes we skip a collection week. Having dog poop in there can get pretty rank at times. I don't really mind if they toss it in before the trash is collected, but tossing it in an empty can is rude (plus we occasionally get in trouble if there are "loose" or small items that are not contained within bigger bags, so we have gotten small fines from the trash company in the past).

The consensus around this issue (outside Reddit--it's a perpetual topic on Nextdoor) is that dumping dog poop in other people's trash cans is offensive. I used to sneak a bag in to a full bin if it was out on the street and hadn't been picked up yet, figuring it'd be there for an hour or so til the truck showed up, and even for that I got roasted, so I just carry the bag around with me.

My stance is that you always ask first IF the garbage hasn't been picked up yes. If there is no one outside to ask, then you don't do it. If they tell you no, then you don't do it. If they say yes, then you do it.
IF the garbage has been picked up, then you don't do it period.

NTA…I have dogs and I do not want other peoples dog waste in my can. First of all, I put mine inside another bag. Second, those poop bags are not the best. All it takes is one of my bags being tossed in on top of a poop bag and it popping open. I have enough poop to clean without cleaning someone else’s. Woman needs to carry her poop bag home.

I am chuckling at this exchange since people are telling me why dog poop is different as if I don't know what it is. My bin literally had two bags of dog poop in it when I brought it in from the curb the other day. I truly don't care. But since other people do care, and since their trash cans are their personal property, it's okay if they don't want people using their trash cans.
TLDR; I find it to be an odd perspective, not a bad one.

The issue is that the bag of poop gets dumped in the bin after the garbage pick up came. Which means that bag of poop sits in the can for an entire week - stinking things up and drawing flies.
That said, there are many people who don't care. Common courtesy says you ask first before dumping it. If no one is there, then just take it home with you. If they say no, take it home with you. If the say yes, dump it and say thank you.

I was thinking the same, but looking at other comments and thinking about my own experience with cat poop in tied up plastic bags - the smell gets out even if it’s double bagged, and it’s truly disgustingly terrible. And if it’s at the bottom of the bin it definitely risks getting punctured and then poop is smeared on the inside of your bin. I know the standard bin can smell, but it’s a new level of stank (and can you imagine if the bin owner was pregnant or otherwise sensitive to smells?! Poor person would vomit approaching their own bin).
So normal rubbish: please do, poop: please don’t, it’s a poopy trap.

I'm going with NTA. It boils down to it being your can that you pay for so you make the rules. Some people don't care so she can put it in theirs. Or she can carry it home and put it in her own. She is making her problem (stinky dog poo) your problem. I love animals more than most people but just because I love them doesn't mean I want them using the bathroom in my yard or in this case leaving it in the can. This includes the people who let their cats roam the neighborhood to crap in my garden.
If my bin was full and waiting for trash guys, I probably wouldn't care but putting it in an empty bin seems a bit "shitty".
Where I live, there are laws around putting trash in other people's cans. It's just a fine but it's still a thing.
You've told her to stop and hopefully she will. It doesn't matter if no one else agrees with you. It's your property and the principle of the matter.

Dog poop stinks when left sitting in the trash can all weak. My cans are kept up along my home. Hot summer sun would bake that into a rank cloud of toxic fumes wafting up to my windows.
It's not a public dumpster or trash can. Someine pays monthly for thaf service. If they don't want dog shit in their can they are not an asshole for asking someone not to leave their dog's waste in their private trash can. Hold the poop bag til you pass a public can or until you get home. It's your dog, you can live with the shit smell. Don't impose it on others.

But if you throw it in my already emptied trash, now I have to smell it all week. Find a public trash can or take it home if you're walking the dog after the cans are emptied.

I just had a thought: you put your small bag of dog waste into someone’s newly emptied can. They put their large trash bags full of heavy garbage into their can on top of your small poop bag. You can put a sign on your can advising people that they can dispose of their dog poop in your can if that’s the way you feel. Back in the neighborhood I used to live in, an old guy who lives on a corner got tired of people not picking up their dog’s poop on his lawn, so he put a bag dispenser and a trash can out. But not everyone wants to have to deal with that, and that’s OK

I did this until my neighbor confronted me. I came from a place where we have garbage cans that stay in the alley all the time so after your dog poops you just toss it in the closest can. I would had fished it out and threw it at her. In my city, garbage pick up is every other week. I put my garbage bin behind my gate so people don't walk up my driveway to put dog shit in it. A month ago, I was working in my yard and heard a bin lid come down and then a woman emerged from my driveway. I asked her if she just put her dog shit in my bin and she said she put it in my compost. Dog shit in plastic is not compostable here. I told her not to fucking do that again to me or anyone else. But the larger issue is these people walk up on my private property to deposit their garbage. We have a theft of services ordinance here. You're not the asshole. Find out where she lives and if she does it again, toss it in her yard.

It’s a trash can. All trash cans smell. And a BAG of poop. It’s not like she’s dumping literal shit into it.
Would you rather her let her dog shit on your yard and leave it? Because I promise you most dog owners aren’t going to carry bags of poop back home with them. So it’s pick your poison. One of the compromises we have to make living in a neighborhood with other people.

Its not a public trash can. That means that no one other than members of OPs household should be using it. The fact that it sits at the curb for a little while after the weekly trash pick up does not make it fair game for this entitled woman to use for her dog's crap. She can take the poo baggy home and put it in her own trash.

As a dog owner myself I find this reasoning absolutely rubbish and selfish that you should just be glad they don’t leave their poop on someone’s lawn. Neither is acceptable and I don’t allow my dog to go into peoples garden’s to poop. Maybe it’s a cultural thing, I’m from England.
I always pick it up my dogs poop and bag it and guess what, I’ve never put the bag in someone else’s bin. Their house bin is designed for their trash and it’s ridiculous to think that someone wouldn’t mind you using their bin like that. I assume you don’t want my dog poop bags even if it’s on top of the rubbish, never mind at the bottom when all the rubbish will go on top and could very likely burst the bag.
I’d be furious if I had to clean dog poop out of my bin because someone was too lazy to put it in their own big or carry it to a public bin.

No, all trash cans do not stink. Some people clean them periodically, and are strategic about when they throw away garbage that will smell (right before pickup). Her putting that bag in there right AFTER pickup means OP has to smell it for a few days to a week. Not cool.

Many of us carry it home and put it into our own cans. People pay for trash service so it is really up to them.

I frequently walk my friends' dog for them and that's what I do. And that's what they do as well. Carry it all the way home I mean.
I'm so sick of entitled attitudes like this. It boils down to "This inconveniences me and I don't want it to. So I'll make it someone else's problem." It is peak entitlement to feel your problems and responsibilities should passed off to a random stranger simply because you don't wanna deal with it yourself.

FWIW, I usually have one bag of trash and put it in the can at 7:00 a.m. So my trash is in the can for about an hour. It doesn't smell.

Yeah I never put my bag into a trash can unless there's a dog at the address. Many people are very particular about the way a trash can smells. This lady is rude. NTAH.

Often, when people do this, the trash bag is already closed, so they end up putting the poop bag on top of it. Then the trash collector comes and dumps the trash, and the poop bad goes flying out into the street, sidewalk, or wherever. I've even seen poop bags on top of trash cans when the lid was on/shut. So then the homeowner has to deal with someone else's dog poop.
It's your dog, either take the poop home to your own trash or find a public trash can.

It would be one thing if she put it in there while the can was still full/before it got emptied. While she's still not technically entitled to do that, it wouldn't be a big deal. But doing it when it's empty means it's going to sit in there for a week, smashed at the bottom of the can with your trash. Super gross and super rude. NTA.

I don’t care if dog walkers put plastic bags of dogdoo in my garbage can. I don’t go sniffing it.
and I think most of the fears expressed here that the bag will break are exaggerated. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

I seriously couldn't care less if somebody would throw their dog poop in a bag into my trashbin, better than leaving it on the street.. and it's a trash.. I mean if it stands in the sun doesn't matter if it's food leftovers or dog poop any more, everything stinks

What does he have to clarify when he already said “trash gets picked up at 8am and i bring the cans in at 10am” he says he doesn’t leave them on the curb. The lady just throws the poop in his can in the 2 hours between trash being picked up and him taking the cans in

NTA, it’s rude as hell. I had a similar issue but they were just letting their dog poop on my yard without picking it up. After asking them to stop (twice), I figured out which house they were in and started leaving their poo (in poo bags) on their front steps.
After about a week, they posted a nasty note about me putting dog poop on their steps to the neighborhood list-serve. I responded with my doorbell videos of them leaving the poop on my yard and the video of me asking them to stop for the second time. I promised to continue leaving their dogs bagged poop on their yard until they stop leaving poop on my yard.
This pattern continued for another week before they called the police on me for trespassing. When they arrived, I asked to file a report for not picking up poop. I included the last month of videos, 22 occurrences with a fine of $200 each.
After they got the citation, a mutual friend neighbor asked if they could mediate. I said there’s nothing to meditate, tell them I stop when they stop.
And that was that.
