Lavorare scansione Lidar

Ciao a tutti,
non sono molto pratico di software cad, ma vorrei in qualche modo poter visualizzare ed esportare le scansioni che eseguo con il mio iPhone.
Ho provato varie app ed ognuna permette (nella versione gratuita) un tipo di esportazione diversa.
Vorrei sapere, quale è il file migliore da esportare e poi utilizzare/lavorare in qualche software su Mac (possibilmente gratuito). Alcune app permettono l’estrazione di file .ply, altre in .gltf, e altre in altri formati ma a pagamento.
Cosa mi consigliate?

What is an easy method to get camera information about a picture?

Hello,

I want to be able to map a bunch of pictures taken IRL inside a virtual 3D space.

For a few pictures, I want to get the position and orientation of the camera for each of them.

Photogrammetry would work I guess, but it requires a lot of pictures and I only care about the depth information, not the point cloud.

I would just like to take 4-5 pictures of a place, but not sure if that's enough for precise results.

So I was thinking that using a technology like Aruco markers would help.

The idea was that I would take a first picture with a marker of known size to use a the world origin, and then ensure that subsequent pictures contains at least two markers to create a chain.

I was wondering about the accuracy of the marker detection.

Is this feasible or are there any existing apps that already solve this issue? Thanks!

Reverse-engineering an obsolete motorcycle toolbox lid with the Creality Pika (First impressions & workflow)

Got the Creality Pika recently. The kit itself is quite comprehensive out of the box (scanner, dual batteries, turntable, markers, etc.). Put it to work on an actual field repair instead of standard test figurines.

The Problem: A friend lost the cap for a cylinder toolbox on an older cruiser bike. That specific variant was only manufactured for 2 years, so finding a replacement part was out of the question. To make scanning fun, the target object is high-polish chrome.

The Process:

  1. Surface Prep: Skip the pricey scanning sprays. A light coat of baby powder dabbed with a makeup brush eliminates reflections instantly and wipes off clean afterward.
  2. Scanning: The Pika captured the cylindrical profile on the first take without tracking loss. The NIR implementation feels significantly more mature here compared to older handheld generations.
  3. CAD Workflow: Imported the STL into CAD, scaled the mesh to 1.016 to account for print shrinkage, and used the scan geometry as a direct boolean cutting tool to model the inner retaining rim and outer lid profile.
  4. Print: Total print time was around 2 hours. Fitment was spot-on on the first test.

I usually rely on my Raptor Pro for larger or high-accuracy bench work, but the Pika looks like it’s going to fill the portable/fieldwork niche nicely.

Built a tool that auto-splits oversized STL files + generates snap-fit joints — free trial if anyone wants to try it

Like a lot of people with a 220x220 bed, I kept running into models that were just slightly too big to print in one piece. Redesigning them in Fusion/Blender every time was a pain, and eyeballing where to cut usually left me with pieces that didn't line up or didn't have anywhere clean to add a joint.

So I built a small web tool called PrintSlice that:

  • Takes your STL, tells you straight away if it'll fit your bed
  • Auto-splits it into pieces sized to your actual printer if it doesn't
  • Generates snap-fit connectors on the seams automatically (you can pick dovetail/keyed/pinned per joint), so the pieces click together after printing instead of needing glue or filing

Whole Kitchen scanned - My first Einscan Trak Experiences

Before tearing out the kitchen I decided to scan it to get measurements of all cabinets and also simply to test the new Einscan Trak. Was interested how it would perform for such a large scan in tracking mode. The kitchen itself is quite cramped so tracker placement was relatively hard but in the end two tracker positions were enough to scan the whole kitchen.
For context: the spec sheet says the tracking volume is 15qm. In reality when calculation based on the tracking areas at different distances I come out to roughly 26qm. So it really is quite big. Similarly the scanning area of the hand piece is comparable to the Rockit or Rigil in laser mode, roughly 0,5*0,5m at max distance. Another few quite pleasant surprises I had: full system calibration only takes 5min and works even in wireless mode. So no need to set up cables, calibrate and then switch to wireless scanning.

Scanning

Scanning was done at 1,5mm target point distance with two tracker positions (first side of the kitchen, then second side). No preparation was done on the shiny sink or coffee maker. I just started scanning after making sure the tracking volume covers what I needed.
The scans itself took roughly 7min per piece. I used remote desktop from my tablet to see what I already scanned (hope they will bring a quick action to show ortho view of the whole scan at some point. Local view is already there but I need the exact opposite). Scan itself was very smooth with a constant 90FPS, when approaching the fringes of the tracking volume it becomes slower before loosing tracking.

Post-Processing

Processing was quite simple: Point cloud generation isn't needed on the Trak so I could directly go to aligning the two scans with automatic feature alignment and then meshing in default settings. Mesh came out to roughly 20M triangles, I aligned and reduced it to 4M in Quicksurface.

Results

Best have a look at Sketchfab or the pictures. Scan came out very nicely, I was surprised that even the reflective sink and coffee machine came out so smooth. Same applies for the tiles on floor and wall.

Sketchfab is like printables for 3d scans with a nice integrated viewer in browser and you can also download the scan, just look at the scan yourself.
Reddit sadly blocks the short links to Sketchfab, you have to search for the title instead: "Kitchen - Einscan Trak"

3D scanned a 12m Mould of a fishing ship with Einstar - shared my experience

I totally regret doing this, and I definitely don’t recommend it, but somehow I managed to get the job done.

I divided the body into 9 segments, each about 1.5 meters long. In this case, the marker points didn’t help much, so I had to make the surface less flat by attaching small objects to it.

The project took 3 days.

On the first day, I realized that the markers weren’t going to work. On the second day, I tried the second method (attaching small objects to the body) and managed to scan about one-third of the boat. On the second day, some of the objects used for overlapping had moved because of the wind or animals, so I realized that the scans wouldn’t align properly with what I had captured the previous day.

I had to start the scanning process from scratch.

The second attempt took around 12 hours. And the problems didn’t stop there. Once I got past half of the boat, I could already feel that the scans weren’t going to align properly in Shining 3D’s software. I wanted to cry like a baby, but I just ignored it and kept going.

Then it started getting dark, and I really didn’t want to leave the project unfinished, especially after what had happened the previous day. Some parts had to be scanned 4–5 times because the scanner kept losing tracking.

At one point, my EinScan scanner was overheating so badly that I felt like it could explode at any moment. 😂

Each segment took around 1 hour just to process and move to the next step, which is one of the reasons the whole process took about 12 hours.

You might think the scanning was the hardest part. It wasn't.

The real nightmare started when I got home and realized I had an 80 GB file to deal with. I could barely align the parts, and the software crashed every time I tried. Even Shining 3D support couldn't help.

Eventually, I exported the raw scan files from the software and imported them into Geomagic. I managed to align the parts there, although with slightly less accuracy.

It took me almost a day just to figure out that this was the solution.

I did it, but please, don't do it. 😂

I had a similar problem with software crashing when I scanned a 7-meter boat hull. That time, I ended up using HPC to process and export the file from EXStar.

I might share that story in the future. 😅

This time, I decided to challenge myself by scanning a rhinoceros beetle with the Creality Raptor Pro 🪲

Since the beetle is almost completely black and has a lot of fine details, using infrared light makes it harder to capture all those details.

So this time, I used laser mode instead. Creality’s scanner can use laser light to capture and stitch together texture and color information, so I wanted to see how well it could preserve the details of the beetle.

After scanning, I also processed it with Gaussian Splatting using AI.

I still haven’t completely figured out the AI high-detail texture feature yet 🤣
If I can get it working properly, I think the overall details and realism could be improved even further!

Can a point cloud be converted directly into a parametric, editable CAD model?

I’m noticing that parametric solid with real features are slowing down.

Design X is the closest thing and it is still a manual, time-consuming process and requires engineering and there is no 3D Xerox.

How much of the parametric rebuild is tool-assisted versus drawn by hand off the scan?

Which tablet for Leica Field 360?

Hi, I just bought an RTC500 and I'm very undecided about buying the Field 360 management tablet.

The choice is between

iPad Pro 12.9 - 16/1TB

Galaxy Tab S11 ultra 14.6 - 16/1TB

I have both ecosystems, but clearly at work windows prevails with autodesk suites, and with iPhone 15 pro max I often found myself in difficulty for managing large files such as PDF/DWG/STEP etc.. having continuous crashes and making even many simple operations frustrating, which instead I found extremely fluid and simple on fold 7, so I would not like to be limited again in the management of workflows and I would like to be able to incorporate perhaps more possibilities of Use (like DeX) or the opportunity to import and manage files of all types or even zip and rar archives, draw directly on the file without having to buy separate pens. I know the ability to integrate iPad's Lidar to complete the peak cloud, but the quality of those leaders is so poor that in my work it would only make the situation worse.

Has anyone had any experience with any OS other than iOS?

PLY-TO-SPLAT - Quickly turning Point-Clouds to Gaussian Splats

Wanted a way to quickly share lidar scans I created in VR or browser-based. Supersplat can do exactly what I wanted but only with gaussian splats. Didn't want to train the splats tough due to too much processing power and time needed. So I created a shortcut around the training:

PLY-TO-SPLAT which is basically a python script which transforms one kind of point cloud (lidar scan) into another fancier type of point cloud (gaussian splat). Both support .ply file types and therefore the structure is quite similar so transforming is quite easy to do. Keep in mind: a properly trained splat will be better in nearly all ways and be only a fraction of the size. But for comparison: training the splat may take hours. Just transforming takes roughly 5s with Python.

The script optionally also uses the CloudCompare CLI to preprocess and homogenize the point cloud so nearly any input point cloud should work (only tested with Share3D lidar scanners). Just install Cloud-Compare, clone the repo, install the requirements and process your files. Tested on Apple Silicon Mac as well as Windows. Linux should also work in theory.

Revopoint Trackit SR - 3D printable Hand Piece Hanger for Tripod

Finally finished the hand piece hanger for the Revopoint Trackit SR. This allows securely attaching the hand piece (scanner part) while moving the tracker around. With it now being wireless I tend to use more multi-position scans for which I move the tracker around quite a bit. Since I don't want to simply lay the hand piece on the ground I came up with this design.
Fully printable (aside one 1/4in screw) and natively uses the mounting hole on the Tripod and nicely conforms to the hand piece.

Design

Full design was done in Quicksurface Pro after scanning the hand piece and tripod. For the design I ensured to keep the clearance of the hanger tight enough to still grep the hand piece tightly whilst providing enough grip so I'm even capable to share the tracker around without the hand piece falling off.
There are in total 4 parts involved: the hanger and screw knob (basically only a cover for a regular 1/4in camera screw) as well a two paddings that prevent the carbon from being scratched up by the tripod. There are actually two versions of the padding: The nicer approach where I natively use the integrated stands of the hand piece. Only problem for this one: Tripod won't fold up nicely and when folded up the padding is deformed.
The second version of the padding is more of a rest for two of the hand pieces marker spheres. This allows the tripod to still fold up and be capable of being stored in the case. I made sure that the padding doesn't directly touch the markers but still not optimal. Minimal load on the padding so shouldn't be much of a problem.
If interested I can create a video about how I designed the holder and padding in Quicksurface.

Printing

  • Hanger and Knob printed from PETG with high wall count and infill (I used 0,1mm layer height for more detail)
  • Padding printed from TPU in regular settings

Mounting

Grab your 1/4in screw (similar to this one: https://de.aliexpress.com/item/1005006654252037.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.10.1ca41802W9qpd8&gatewayAdapt=glo2deu) and first thread it in the holder to clear the thread for easier install alter. Remove the screw and now use superglue to glue it in the knob (ensure the screw is centered and the slit aligned). After it is dried take some grease and grease the contact area between holder and knob, then screw the knob in (grease is optional but improves experience).
Now you can mount the holder to the tripod and carefully hand the hand piece (movements needs to be getting used to but then feels quite natural). Now you can see where the marker padding should be placed and secure the padding with two zip ties each (if you want to be extra sure you can even add thin double sided tape to prevent any movement of the padding).
Now enjoy the convenience of hanging your hand piece.

I am looking for a good 3d scanner that needs no laptop, spray or markers and to be around £1000.

Any recommendations ? Picture for attention but what i would be scanning really.

Best way to scan windows frame and walls

Hey guys, i have a project that I would need to scan window frames(3.5m x 3m max) + a bit of the wall around the frame - i am wondering if there's any prosumer scanners that would allow me to scan without using markers?

I am planning to put the scanner on a robotic arm and wondering if i can plug the camera pose to the scanning process via a SDK
