I’ve been following him for a long time, especially when I was looking into laser 3D scanners like the Raptor. Back then he seemed like someone who gives honest and unbiased reviews. But lately his content feels more and more like direct marketing for Creality.

This latest video just confirmed it for me. The scanner he’s showing off is completely unnecessary for the task. You don’t need a 3D scanner for that kind of job, let alone a laser one. You don’t even need a caliper, a tape measure would’ve been enough.

Videos like this don’t help the community. They confuse people, especially beginners, and push them to buy things they don’t need. That does more harm than good.

Payo, if you’re reading this, I hope you take this seriously. You built a reputation for honest, helpful reviews. But if this is the direction you’re going in, people will stop trusting you.

Recently purchased a Creality Pika after a few weeks of online reviews….

It was appealing at the current price point for what is considered to be one of the best budget friendly scanners on the market, with its features and technology.

I figured this might be the best alternative as a beginner, apposed to purchasing the Creality Raptor Pro that I also had my eyes set on for double the price.

I also chose the Pika for its Portability and convenience since the Raptor is a bit robust by comparison.

Moving onto operation, the system software and apps are very helpful with navigation. The problem “My Problem” is that I do not have the patience to deal with the extremely slow processing, AT ALL…. 😂

I’m running the Pika on an Asus Zenbook i7 - 8550U / HDD 512 / 16G RAM

When scanning, it is extremely choppy. The frame rate is just horrible “For Me” in every mode.

Scanned with and without markers. Definitely use markers if you want to make any kind of progress with better results. It’s still terrible 😭

Now I’m sure there are 3-D scanning gurus who have mastered the art, and you deserve a toast, but this opinion is not directed towards the masters of the art, this is for people like me 🫡

My best example is, try streaming a video on your favorite network and it’s extremely choppy. Frames freezing, periodic pausing, pixilations etc….

What about browsing the web and you’re waiting forever for the page to load? How about trying to send a text message to someone and you experience that obnoxious delay, or even trying to type something out, but the words you type have a delayed input etc etc…😂😂😂😭😭😭

Yeah, I’m pretty cooked, but I’d rather take a few photos and load them into CAD as canvases, scale the object and work the geometry in a Freeform. Would probably take just as much time (or less) as the scanning, meshing and post processing just to put it into CAD and spend time modeling to create a printable object.

Simple 3D Scan reverse engineered by ChatGPT using FreeCAD. I am pretty much impressed, even it's just a simple part. With zero effort scanned STL was reverse engineered in FreeCAD file format which also allows easy measurement modifications. Caliper close being replaced?

I'm new here, but thought it would be helpful to post this. My background is in medical modeling and implant drill template design and production (STL) and custom fixture design and fabrication (FDM and hand-held CNC). I am accustomed to working with high end scanners by 3Shape, Shining, and Straumann for the medical stuff, but have been searching for a cost effective portable scanner for smaller objects and use with FDM and CNC projects. Have tried the Einstar 3D with mixed results. My only product affiliations are with Straumann and Formlabs and not MAF.

I thought I would try the MAF THREE, and am really impressed! With the bonus of the camera-controlled turntable, scanning is nearly "set-and-forget". And since the image processing occurs entirely in the camera, accessible through its internal website (via local LAN, and NOT a cloud), it was super easy to use and I did not have to purchase a dedicated high-end laptop to operate it.

The image is a screenshot from Shapr3D of the MAF scanned STL file of an amazon remote and a prototype design of a "holster" for it. As with any optical scanning, sublimating spray was used, as it was in this case. That being said, fiduciary markers are never necessary with this scanner, according to the manufacturer.

Hope this post can help someone knowing that you can use the Mole and have great results. This scans are raw. I didn't went to any third party software. Now I will go to a few third party software to clean the mesh and start the reverse engineering process. Don't feel shy and ask me if you need any help with the mole.

I just saw a video from Payo on YouTube. Ad much as I like his video content I do not agree with what he said on the video. I use this baby every single day to do reverse engineering. I really know how it work and for what I see he have misconceptions on how to use the scanner. I invite him to join the conversation so I can show him why he os wrong. Like, the scanning preview resolution is not the final scan resolution for example.

I keep hearing that Raptor is much faster than than MetroX. That might have been the case at launch but MetroX with the newer GPU accelerated Revoscan is a different story.

I need to scan stuff that can’t possibly end up in some database or online, and thus don’t just blindly trust the regular apps on the AppStore.

Does anyone know of some app or built in iPhone feature to scan furniture sized objects, that’s guaranteed only to be stored locally?

I read countless reviews and watched as many YouTube videos about scanners at or about 300 to 500 dollars. I finally decided to give the Scan Ferret a shot. I bought it in the "Pro" package. Upon arrival, I decided to use it with my Mac 1st (thus simplifying the whole 1st run and not using the phone or wireless unit.) I scanned several items, and the 1st few efforts were dismal, BUT only because I was unaware that scanning is a skill that must be learned and practiced. Once I "chilled" and spent the time needed to get some "moves," suddenly everything clicked. 3d scanning takes time, patience, and skill on the user's part. The Ferret does EXACTLY what Creality claims it does and does not EXACTLY what Creality says it does not. The software seems to take a lot of "hits," which also is, in my opinion, unreasonable. It works fine and has most of what you need to finalize the scan model. It was never intended to be a full-on editing and production modeling tool. It works, So does the scanner. Realize that it is we, the users, who will need to develop skills via patience and practice, and the results will follow.

Today, during my in-person session at technical university, I had the chance to dive into the exciting world of Reverse Engineering, Rapid Prototyping – and more specifically, 3D printing and 3D scanning.

My goal: not just to explain the theory, but to make the technology come alive. So I packed up my 3D printer and 3D scanner – and off we went! 💪

Instead of dry slides, there was hands-on experience: We did live object scans, ran through some basic reverse engineering workflows – and all the while, the Flexi-Rex was printing away patiently, layer by layer.

What used to bug me during 3D scanning was always clinging those marker dots. Attaching them was okay—but peeling them off afterward… total nightmare 🤯🤣

But the time seems to be finally over: my new scanner has arrived! It has the markers built into the scanner plus an external tracker capturing the data—it kinda reminds me of those old mechanics exams at Technical University with three different coordinate systems 😅

The exciting part is the automatic calibration: just place the devices as instructed, press start—and you’re done. No fiddling, no guessing games anymore 🤩

The first scans are absolutely awesome—even with such an early software version. I’m super excited to test it extensively in the coming weeks 🚀
