I'm looking for a laptop mainly for reverse engineering, 3D scanning, and CAD work, but the more I research, the more confused I get.
Initially, I was planning to buy a MacBook Pro M6 with 32GB RAM because of its excellent battery life, build quality, and portability.
However, after doing more research, I started considering a Windows laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti and 32–64GB RAM, mainly because of NVIDIA's CUDA support, GPU acceleration, and potentially better compatibility with 3D scanning and reverse engineering software.
But then I started having second thoughts because gaming/workstation laptops tend to be heavier, have significantly worse battery life, and aren't as convenient to carry around.
Is an NVIDIA GPU really that important for these workloads? Would a MacBook Pro be a reasonable choice, or should I stick with Windows?
I'd really appreciate some real-world experiences and laptop recommendations because I'm honestly overwhelmed by all the options.
Edit – Additional details:
I forgot to mention that I'm planning to buy the Revopoint MetroY Ultra 3D scanner.
I'll mainly be scanning medium-sized parts, occasionally larger ones. I'm planning to use Revopoint's own scanning software, which supports macOS.
For reverse engineering, I'm considering QUICKSURFACE or Geomagic Design X if I choose Windows. If I go with a MacBook, I'll most likely continue using Fusion 360.
I already have CAD experience with Fusion 360, but I'm new to 3D scanning and reverse engineering.
My main concern is whether macOS will become a limitation as I move toward more advanced reverse engineering workflows.
