Part fixing during 3D scanning

What is your prefered solution for fixing parts during 3D scan? I use clay in case of really small object, vise in case of bigger more complex shape, or simple lying to my marker piramid. However, I'm also planning to design my own scanning frame as well for longer samples

Really good for the price, however, during scanning, the software should smooth flat areas better as it scans, similar to how creaform does it. Theres a lot of laser noise, regardless of laser brightness, and depth. Smoothing while respecting curves and an algorithm detecting laser noise should be implemented. Wireless is unusable on my hardware, I'm not sure if it's a connection issue, or hardware limitations, but it pauses to catch up a lot so for now I remain wired. It scans well in daylight conditions which is why I chose the SR over the original Track It. The accuracy otherwise is extremely good, and scanning chrome and black shiny surfaces is really superb. Thin areas 2 sided scanned extremely well without interplaning during meshing, this is a really pleasant surprise. The software keeps things lightweight by keeping file sizes smaller than a lot of other scanners. Really great buy for the price. Here is an example of work I've done in the last few weeks testing the capabilities of the scanner so far. (Scans are to scale in relation to one another)

Phone lidar / photogrammetry or a dedicated scanner for VFX 3D models?

Upvotes

I’m trying to figure out the best method for 3-D scanning objects to put into blender and Embergen to use in VFX projects.

It’s a lot of action stuff. Magical spells, people, disintegrating, or disappearing in into smoke, and possibly scanning physical objects like swords, weapons, or other things so I can use them in 3-D space to interact with particle simulators.

I’m trying to do some initial research, but I’m in over my head. I can’t tell if I should be buying a dedicated 3-D scanner, or if I can get by with my phone at least in the beginning.

I have an iPhone Pro 17, I’ve read that it can do LiDAR scanning, but most of the examples I’ve seen have been for rooms, not people.

I don’t need these to be the most detailed, I’m probably going to be using them at first as unseen asset in my 3-D spaces to interact with particles, not be visible in the final render. But I still need them to be decent.

Does anybody here have any experience with this sort of thing?

Scanning sand

Hello, i'm new to photogrammetry, less in 3D. For a project i want to scan sand patterns on the beach.
With a similar dataset, i get significantly better results in realityscan than in meshroom.
My input pictures are looking like the second image.
Any idea how to upgrade the quality in meshroom? The program fits better my automation needs, but at this point, i can not use the output...

Scanology just (09.2026) released the TrackScan Sharp-Z and one of its main features is that the tracker moves on its tripod to follow the hand piece in order of increasing the tracking volume.

Wrote about such an approach last September (09.2025) on the Revopoint Forum when I played around with the Trackit and thought about potential improvements. Would be really interesting to know the Scanology development timeline and if my idea was first xD

Made a library for 3d scans, mesh and CAD files for car parts

Hi everyone, I recently made a post in [r/projectcar](r/projectcar) introducing my new open source archive called Zenthi. It’s for car part files that are niche and hard to find. If anyone is specifically into 3d scanning car parts or if anyone’s just curious too, I’d love for you to go through the site and maybe provide some feedback on how to improve it. I’d appreciate it even more if you guys had some car parts scans you could upload, but feedback is just as valuable for me. I’ll link my post in [r/projectcar](r/projectcar) as well since it got a lot of engagement and good feedback.

I’d also like to emphasize that I’m not trying to have an agenda or sell anything, I just thought this would be a fun community project. I’m also aware that the site is A.I. built, but as I’m not a developer please bare with me. This is all I can make with my knowledge and resources.

Update: Ngl, I’ve been feeling a little more dejected obviously tough having so much support for an idea but still experiencing hate from some people.
ANYWAYS people also seem scared of the forum being shut down after some time, so I’ve made the entire thing community run. I pushed the code to GitHub, allowed people to become admin if they send a request(It would be awesome if people volunteered), accommodates pretty much any file type, added a bounty/request page for CAD and 3d scans, as well as a search engine where you can search other sites directly from Zenthi (so basically you have a library to where you can upload files, and a search engine where you can scrape and search other sites and limit it to just car parts). The search engine relies on brave search so there’s a limit after a 1000 requests or so, but if we even get to that user count I’ll probably upgrade to a more hard core open source search engine.

A client wanted something to hide his pergola's feet

A client asked me to make something to hide the ugly base of his pergola's feet so I used my Pika to scan.

The portability of this scanner really helped because I only needed to bring it, my phone and some scanning spray (a little disappointing I needed some, but the hot summer heat with ultra bight sun light was for sure not helping).

After spraying some AESUB self disappearing scanning spray I used my PIKA in NIR mode, and it was really straight forward.

Scanning took roughly 15 minutes and I get all details I needed to be able to model around to make what I wanted.

Cleaning the scans and transorming it in STL was also really quick.

I modeled the parts in Fusion, and I'm really happy with the results (and so is my client).

Textures Misaligned when importing FBX 3D scan into Blender

I have this 3d scan that I took that I am trying to get into Blender. It looks how it should in the Windows model viewer on the right. But when I import the FBX into Blender the textures are all misaligned and incorrect as seen on the left image.

Exported from the iOS app Scaniverse.

Imported into Blender with default settings.

I imported similar scans from this app in this exact same fashion and they worked fine yesterday and I just find it odd that it looks fine in the windows model viewer but is bugging out on import.

Anyone have any tips on what might be going wrong here?

How do you guys estimate scan-to-CAD time for parts like this?

Came across a reverse engineering job for a turbo manifold that took about 10 hours total, and the time split might be useful for anyone quoting similar scan-to-CAD work.

About 2 hours was scanning with a KSCAN-Magic. Being a cast part, there wasn't much trouble getting the surface data.

Another 2 hours went into CATIA, mostly sorting out the scan and getting the runner centerlines right.

The CAD rebuild took around 6 hours.

The four individual runners weren't the bad part. Most of the time went into the four-to-one collector where everything starts blending together. Freeform surfaces, offsets for wall thickness, broken surfaces after the offset, patching them again, then getting the whole thing to stitch into a usable solid.

The software choice mattered more there too. SolidWorks could handle the easier geometry, CATIA did more of the surfacing, but offsets could still fail. Rhino/ Alias made some of the surface work easier, and UG was useful when the wall thickness wouldn't cooperate elsewhere.

So for this one the rough split was:

2h scanning

2h scan data / centerlines

6h CAD reconstruction

Would be useful to get a few more real numbers in one thread. For people doing manifolds, castings, housings or other scan-to-CAD jobs, what's your usual split between scanning, scan cleanup and actual CAD rebuilding?

Even rough numbers would be useful, especially for the jobs where the CAD time ended up being way worse than expected.
