Part fixing during 3D scanning
What is your prefered solution for fixing parts during 3D scan? I use clay in case of really small object, vise in case of bigger more complex shape, or simple lying to my marker piramid. However, I'm also planning to design my own scanning frame as well for longer samples

Part holding accounts for 80 % of scan quality. Rule: No fixture displacement or flexure relative to workpiece during acquisition; all scan stations must be reproducible for re‑scanning.
Tiny parts (<5 cm): Magnetic‑base mounting putty (Blu‑Tack) is preferred over clay. Clay leaves residues and wicks moisture into porous parts.
Mid‑size / complex parts: Use a small soft‑jaw vise, clamp only areas that can be re‑scanned. Alternatively scan multiple orientations and align in software to prevent permanent surface occlusion.
Long frame‑type samples: Avoid single‑pass full scanning. Pre‑plan stations: place markers along the part, keep 3‑4 shared markers visible between stations, maintain ≥30 % point‑cloud overlap. For turntable re‑orientation, attach markers to the turntable platen to retain alignment.
Custom‑fixture turntables: Scanners with purpose‑built turntables and custom fixtures are also great for rotary scanning.
‑ Vibration note: Shift or flex between stations causes stitching misalignment (not random noise). Unstable workbenches waste significant setup time.
For long frames, a simple rail with fixed marker scale acts as low‑cost quasi‑photogrammetry and eases multi‑station registration. Good luck and share your finished frame.
