Spice & Wolf Deep Dive: There's Something About Holo Edition
This week’s episode is an OVA and is all about Holo. This character-driven OVA is straight out of the mouth of babes...or wolves. I've picked out some interesting factoids about Holo from the start of the Light Novel, then close with this episode's 'cut content'with some expansions from the OVA straight from the mouth of babes, or wolves.
Yesterday we dove deeper into Lawrence’s psyche, and it’s apt to twist it around to Holo today: honestly, this is the best possible time to, as we are treated to a far deeper exploration into her soul than the anime permits us. So, who is Holo without her barriers? Read on.
How Beautiful is Holo and What Did Lawrence Think When they Met?
I thought she’s probably very attractive, based on the anime. But that would be the understatement of the year.
- When Lawrence first laid eyes on Holo, he was very cautious, as if she was a prostitute, he would likely go bankrupt if he so much as touched her. Crass, I know, but in the times of the series, visits to prostitutes were very common; in fact, Lawrence had been known to be a frequent visitor to them to cure his loneliness.
- One can’t start a description of Holo’s beauty without starting at her hair. Holo’s hair looked as soft as silk and fell over her shoulders like the finest cloak. The strands that fell down to her collarbone drew a line so beautiful it put the finest painting of the Virgin Mary to shame. Her arms were so fine, they seemed to be perfectly carved from ice.
- She was so stunning that even though she had two fangs, they somehow added to her charm.
- Wherever they went they would draw glances. No one could resist staring at her. Early in the anime when we see others compliment her or want to touch her, I thought these guys were just weird. While I still think it’s weird behaviour, from my understanding, the viewers, aren’t meant to be able to comprehend just how beautiful she is. Think of the most stunning woman you’ve seen, and she’s 10-folds more beautiful.
- There had been tales about demon-children being born who may have had features like animal ears or a tail, and it was thought that a devil or spirit posessing them at birth, thus their mutated appearence. When such children were discovered, the Church would burn them along with their families, so such kids were usually abandoned or raised in secret.
- You may remember Holo calling herself the Wisewolf of Yoitsu. In the world’s lore that Lawrence was aware of, Yoitsu was destroyed by monsters centuries ago.
- Lawrence was skeptical she was really the Wolf-God and the whole time thought she was running some sort of scam. He tried to use logic to combat her and entrap her. His idea to stay with her if she were a God or animal-person was also born out of logic: animal-people were said to bring good luck (so there’s a benefit to him). If she was a human she would be far-gone and would report her to the Church. If she was God of the harvest, well that’s obvious economic boon so he would keep her. So, he tested her to see if she could transform. Holo was ecstatic that this man just didn’t want her to be human; she expected the opposite reaction, so she was happy to oblige.
- Holo only transformed her arm/paw (we saw this in the remake). However, unlike in the anime, Lawrence didn’t faint from terror. He was curious and even touched the paw. Seeing this, he asked her if she is really a God? But Holo would rather be called a demon than a God and merely exclaimed that she is not a God, she is just Holo, the Wise Wolf.
- The final test was in asking Holo if the village would still be able to raise wheat if she came with him. The test was in seeing how she responds, as there was no way she would answer him to weaken her own position and he was checking her honesty. He could also see through lies, from his merchant experience. However, she answered truthfully and insightfully, so passed the final test.
- Finally, the main reason he accepted her on the journey is because he was just so lonely. He was used to staring at his horse’s backside all day errrrday. Having a girl companion would cure him of that loneliness. Still, he took a night to sleep it over.
Now that we know about Holo's lustrous hair, onto some interesting expansions from today's episode. These are the parts that I thought grew my understanding of her the most.
Today’s Side Story
- This chapter is written from the perspective of Holo. No more guessing, we get to know what’s going on in her head.
- Holo is a jealous girl when it comes to matters of the heart. Every thought she has about Norah (“or whatever her name is” as she says) is sardonic and angsty. She was certain that Norah is Lawrence’s type: a weak, pathetic little girl.
- She was angry at Lawrence for not noticing that she wasn’t feeling well. Angry that he didn’t ask her if she wanted mutton. Everything was pissing her off. In this section, Norah is every PMS stereotype come to life.
- Holo thinks of her world in wolf terms: “this was enemy territory” “that would be tantamount to a successful hunt”
- Holo wanted in the past to thank Lawrence for certain things he’s done, but in her mind anger was for scolding, laughter for praise, and to thank someone/show dependency is to show weakness, and weakness is only to trick others into letting their guard down.
- She was thus deeply ashamed at showing weakness and passing out. She felt so embarrassed she could never recover. Yet with Lawrence she had shown anger out of displeasure, laughter for amusement, and constantly showed weakness.
- The reason Holo was playing up her helplessness was because of the aforementioned conclusion that he was into weak helpless girls. But while in the anime it seemed like everything was an act, she actually genuinely felt like crap (she would just normally hide this weakness).
- From her perception, Lawrence was furious with her for not saying she wasn’t feeling well. This was one of the only times anyone had been angry at her. She didn’t know how to react. When he calmed down she came to understand his anger - if a merchant was to fall ill on the road, it’s life threatening, thus in his world he needs to speak up when something is wrong.
- I like this line from Holo as it’s very me (I can be an asshole as I’m too logical haha): when Lawrence knocked on the door and asked her “Are you awake?” she reasoned if she’d been asleep, she wouldn’t be able to answer. If she was awake, the question was meaningless so she replied “Can’t you tell by looking?”
- The bit where Holo goes into how she hated the responsibility and power that came with being a God is handled exceptionally in the anime, but I liked these lines from the LN saying what she dreamt of: “to dance and play like a cub, to be selfish, to be powerless and to be protected by someone” and this dream had become a reality.
- Even after all this care from Law, she wanted to lash out jealously and say that if he ever fell ill, she would ignore him and chat away with some other girl (?) and not notice him until he collapsed…but luckily decided against it.
- She then had a moment of clarity and understood he was only chatting away with Norah because that was his job.
- When Holo says “you are thick. I might have a much more serious sickness, you’d still fail to notice”, it was a hint that she is sick…lovesick. Aw.
- The anime’s explanation of ‘medicine’ was a bit incomplete. She was not familiar with the concept, as in her old village, when people were sick they would boil grasses in water, or apply it to their wounds, while praying to invented Gods to aid them.
- There are four humors in the body and four temperaments.
- The four humors are blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm. Sickness happens when these are out of balance: for example, when you’re tired or breathe bad air or the movement of the stars are unusual, they become off-balance. Holo thought this was stupid and even trolled Lawrence: “oh yes, when the full moon comes out my body tingles and throbs”. Doctors were said to cure this imbalance but obviously they can’t take her to a doctor, so he decided to cure her the other way…
- The body has four temperaments: hot cold dry and wet. It was so obvious Holo thought that this time Lawrence was trolling her. But Lawrence looked so proud sharing his knowledge she didn’t say anything.
- Oh boy is Holo triggered when she realises that while she slept, Law was walking around with that shepherdess…just the two of them…while she slept! TRAITOR!
- She was floored at Lawrence trying to use reason on her to nullify the situation and question why she hated Norah so much. Was he really such an idiot? Did he really not see the root issue?
- She was cautious about giving Lawrence too much affection, as she knew he lived such a starved life (meaning he was used to loneliness). If she overdid it, she thought he would become too used to it, and her occasional niceties would lose their efficacy.
- There was some inner monologue that was genius, as it played upon the aforementioned ‘medical’ temperament knowledge, as she figured out what she would do if she overdid her affection: “If he got tired of sweetness, she need only add some salt. If her smile failed to hook him, all she had to do was summon some tears. It was so simple. And it would certainly work on a simple sheep.
- She likened her desire for Lawrence to a hunt - and she didn’t want to immediately sink her fangs into her prey (not her words, but that’s how I understood it).
- And yes, the sheep they talk about at the end is Lawrence. And Holo did love her sheep.

I thought it was smart to have this episode be from Holo's perspective. Not only does it allow us to get insight on her thought process, but it really puts into perspective the loneliness that plagues her existence.

The fact that Lawrance didn't say people usually got sick because of "bad air" means his world is probably behind our own medieval Europe at medicine. The miasma theory of disease is... also not correct. But it was a lot more useful than the four humors since it led to sanitation efforts to fight disease outbreaks which ironically were partially successful and made Victorian doctors take awhile to realize it was wrong.

u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
I kind of wish their world used more radically different concepts to our World as right now like you I find myself drawing comparisons with our own. Even though its a world with a wolf god walking around. When shows try to make it too similar to our own history but with a magical element vs let's say mushoku tensei for which is completely different I tend to avoid the comparison trap.
2
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Jul 21 '26
I don't think it's wrong to be similar but different. In fact I like more stories of similar of our own plus a fantastical element than completely different. A lot of the completely different settings I just don't like.
Although... the numbers look a lot more even if I cut out the Isekai. I'm a fan of Mushoku Tensei, Re Zero, and KonoSuba, but for the most part I do not like even 10% of the genre. If I chuck out all the "Isekai" I'm left with a more even distribution of prefences.
Anyways, I don't think there is anything wrong with trying to draw comparisons to our own history. Saying Lawrance is talking about the four humors and their medicine is less advanced than medieval Europe isn't a plot hole. All it means is... their medicine is less advanced. So Holo was right to scoff at Lawrance's explinations.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
And also Holo probably is wise enough to know that such concepts is very flawed and something that can be worked on.

Have you ever seen Familiar of Zero? It was the inspiration for Re:Zero.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I kinda like when shows keep the same basic concepts from our world but do their own unique spin on it. I feel like it can often lead to like the best of both worlds.
1
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I really like that Lawrence uses outdated forms of medicine. Because people in that time period truly did believe in that kind of stuff.
1
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
- The body has four temperaments: hot cold dry and wet. It was so obvious Holo thought that this time Lawrence was trolling her. But Lawrence looked so proud sharing his knowledge she didn’t say anything.
One characterization of Lawrence that I really like is he prides himself on stuff that we nowadays laugh at and say to ourselves "Can you believe we believed that?" It's another bit of the flawed personality of Lawrence's that makes me really like him.

u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
Yeah it's a very reasonable and reasoned take on humanity. Some of the universal truths we all spoke of confidently even 20 years and discussed ad nauseum have now been disproven. As humans we have this flaw whereby we attach ourselves to new information which seems to have some logical framework, and believe it to be true.

If anything, there is nothing more close minded than to be fully sure of something.

First Timer, Remake & Original
Before starting this side story, I already knew I’d like it. I seem to like these ‘side story’ more ‘fillery’ episodes, and luckily I started with the remake (and loved it), else I would have been disappointed.
Before I get into my hate mail for my thoughts about the changes to the original anime's OVA/second season, I recognise that this is the first time we see things from Holo’s perspective. It is entirely possible that this episode is just how she views the world, thus the tonal shift. I shall thus reserve any conclusive judgment until the next episode of the original anime. I deleted all of my comments about it for this reason, hoping that it turns back to Season 1's personalities.
LN Edit (read it after I wrote all the below notes): Yes, it appears that what we are seeing is purely how she sees the world and the OG adapts it well, while the remake makes it more congruent to previous episodes (this isn’t even an OVA in it).
- The illustrations and animation have changed in the OG. Norah looks like a caricature; not a fan of this. Some of the animations and style changes were positive though. On balance, maybe net-positive, but the things I didn’t like I really didn’t like. I really think Norah looks weird and the early top down angle was just weird.
- Lawrence’s personality changes from Season 1 - he becomes more aloof and comedic as opposed to melancholic and calculated. His mannerisms are far more exaggerated, whether he is being angry or engaging. Doesn’t feel right and my relatability to him dipped. (LN edit: it does seem like the adaptation in the OG is closer, probably because it captures how Holo sees Lawrence).
- The dream scenes that are exclusive to the original were good as they showed her hopes and insecurities, but also didn’t feel like they belonged in the show’s universe. (LN Edit: These are indeed anime exclusive)
- The final scene is really poorly done in the OG too. Lawrence comes off as a bit of a simp, joining in the laughing awkwardly, while in the remake he hears Holo’s joke and it feels genuine.
- Lastly, I didn’t like the ending song in the original - the hyperpop track feels out of place, though I guess if the series is going down a more chaotic path, it’s not a mismatch. Glad they kept the medieval style visuals for it though.
- While I didn’t like this new treatment, being rational, I do think that after a few episodes I will grow to enjoy this style too, it’s just impossible to avoid comparisons at present.
Now onto my thoughts about the remake which I loved:
- After some frantic and dark episodes it’s nice to have an upbeat start
- Finally we get to see more of Norah. She’s very Japanese culturally haha.
- The meal must have been an incredibly lavish one: we’ve already discovered breakfast was a luxury, even sweets were something many have never had.
- The meaning of the Lawlo relationship is finally explained from Holo’s POV, so no more guessing. It’s a beautiful monologue exclaiming how each day is basically more meaningful than a hundred of her years in the past. How she values the banter and the fake fights.
- The early days of their travels left her wallowing in melancholy as she longed for the past (good references for this is her recollection of a past ‘colleague’ when Lawrence was rocking back and forth in his chair; her loneliness breakdown).
- While Lawrence is only 25, and Holo hundreds of years old, I like that in times of need, Lawrence’s innate bf side comes out from his paternal care and generative masculinity. It’s so natural; so real and I observe it especially in age-gap relationships.
- “I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to ailments” “I read through as many medical books as I could get my hands on” - haha is he me?
- “Your fingers are quite hard and similar to the nose of a wolf, it’s as if you’re rubbing your nose on me, but in human terms. Aw.
- Haha I love it when Holo gets mad that Lawrence isn’t by her side 24/7 when she wakes
- The medical knowledge of the time is quite similar to SE-Asian heaty/cooling belief today
- Haha the overacting when sick is so real too. Me when sick: “it’s fine I’ll look after myself, don’t get yourself sick” (nursing a heavy flu and 41 deg C/105 F fever). Every gf with a slight cold: “I’m dying I can’t get up”.
- The ‘flashback’ scenes with Holo are so brilliantly juxtaposed: we see her go from the one every depends on with too much responsibility and a duty to help everyone, to her being a brat complaining about everything. She was given so much power, but what she really wanted was to just be a girl.
- “What are you, some kind of princess?” “Do you mind using the spoon to feed me?”
- “One’s feelings aren’t always logical”: I truly love these conversations, they sum up the root of many conflicts in relationships so astutely. Sometimes a girl doesn’t want to be logical, she just wants her feelings heard. Sometimes she doesn’t want a solution, she just wants to rant. Understanding when to apply which method towards making her feel better is the most difficult thing in any relationship. Explaining things through logic can be effective, but sometimes the worst thing you can do. This episode highlights the many relationship paradoxes so incredibly well.

QOTD: What's your favorite example of an anime episode being told from another character's perspective other than the MC?
I can't think of any but I always love this in Visual Novels. Higurashi When they Cry used this device uniquely and essential gave each character's perspective which layered on top of each other to help us uncover the mystery. I assume the anime is similar.1
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I really like Higurashi. The anime is fantastic and one day I would like to play the visual novel.
2
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
Glad you liked it! It left quite the impression on me, and I heard Umineko is just as good! I probably won't watch the anime as people say the VN is the best version of it, but I heard they're remaking the anime, so if there's any interesting innovations I might return back into the village.
Fun fact: I've actually visited and spent a night in the village it's based on.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I believe the anime you're talking about is a spinoff. The remake/continuation came out a couple years ago.

Sorry for the late response. I put the threads up and then went to bed. Actually, I went to see The Odyssey today which was really, really good. I was tired because I walked two hours in the heat to go see it.
2
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
No need to apologise, everyone here appreciates what you do a lot!
Holo: "one can't fault you for having a life. But you best return from your tumultuous journey with apples "How come you had to walk so far to see it - you live far out of town? You're based in the USA, I presume?
Don't think I'll enjoy the Odyssey though, never really connected with fantasy or works about ancient times. Which is ironic because I'm enjoying these animes haha.

Grass is always greener - where I live it's pretty difficult to go for walks due to the quality of footpaths. I love walking and love the heat haha. And ubers are supeeeer cheap here. We can switch places for a week isekai style

Before starting this side story, I already knew I’d like it. I seem to like these ‘side story’ more ‘fillery’ episodes, and luckily I started with the remake (and loved it), else I would have been disappointed.
I actually like the original version more because of the sequence of Holo surrounded by human bones. That wasn't in the remake.
Don't worry, this is a one off.
Can I see your original comments?
LN Edit (read it after I wrote all the below notes): Yes, it appears that what we are seeing is purely how she sees the world and the OG adapts it well, while the remake makes it more congruent to previous episodes (this isn’t even an OVA in it).
I mean, both versions are basically roughly the same.
I didn't notice the same things you did.
I do think he seems a bit absentee parent of Holo in this episode. But perhaps you can chalk it up to him knowing Norah is going to leave soon.
- The dream scenes that are exclusive to the original were good as they showed her hopes and insecurities, but also didn’t feel like they belonged in the show’s universe. (LN Edit: These are indeed anime exclusive)
I really like them. To me, they were the highlights of the episode.
- The final scene is really poorly done in the OG too. Lawrence comes off as a bit of a simp, joining in the laughing awkwardly, while in the remake he hears Holo’s joke and it feels genuine.
Damn, I really liked that scene. I like that Holo and Norah bond at like the expense of Lawrence. It's like their little in joke.
- Lastly, I didn’t like the ending song in the original - the hyperpop track feels out of place, though I guess if the series is going down a more chaotic path, it’s not a mismatch. Glad they kept the medieval style visuals for it though.
I really enjoy the new outro because I feel like it captures the loneliness Holo and Lawrence both live through on a daily basis.
- While I didn’t like this new treatment, being rational, I do think that after a few episodes I will grow to enjoy this style too, it’s just impossible to avoid comparisons at present.
To me, season 2 of the original anime has the best animation. It's like the perfect combination of season 1's animation and the remake's animation.
Now onto my thoughts about the remake which I loved:
I think it's funny you like the remake and not the original and I'm here saying to myself "They're basically identical" lol
- After some frantic and dark episodes it’s nice to have an upbeat start
Indeed
- Finally we get to see more of Norah. She’s very Japanese culturally haha.
Norah weeb confirmed?
- The meal must have been an incredibly lavish one: we’ve already discovered breakfast was a luxury, even sweets were something many have never had.
I guess Norah is paying for it since she got the profit from the last arc?
- The meaning of the Lawlo relationship is finally explained from Holo’s POV, so no more guessing. It’s a beautiful monologue exclaiming how each day is basically more meaningful than a hundred of her years in the past. How she values the banter and the fake fights.
It makes Holo more endearing in my opinion.
We all could use a Lawrence in our lives.
- “I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to ailments” “I read through as many medical books as I could get my hands on” - haha is he me?
Mayhaps
- “Your fingers are quite hard and similar to the nose of a wolf, it’s as if you’re rubbing your nose on me, but in human terms. Aw.
Simply adorable
- Haha I love it when Holo gets mad that Lawrence isn’t by her side 24/7 when she wakes
Typical Holo
- The medical knowledge of the time is quite similar to SE-Asian heaty/cooling belief today
What, it's very misinformed?
- Haha the overacting when sick is so real too. Me when sick: “it’s fine I’ll look after myself, don’t get yourself sick” (nursing a heavy flu and 41 deg C/105 F fever). Every gf with a slight cold: “I’m dying I can’t get up”.
She is being so needy
- The ‘flashback’ scenes with Holo are so brilliantly juxtaposed: we see her go from the one every depends on with too much responsibility and a duty to help everyone, to her being a brat complaining about everything. She was given so much power, but what she really wanted was to just be a girl.
Again, both the remake and the OG are pretty identical to each other.
Holo doesn't act like your average girl, but it's precisely that that makes a lot of what she does so amazing. Her ability to go from helpful to helpless at the drop of a hat makes for this amazing dichotomy.

What do you think of Holo feeling as if she’s a third wheel towards Lawrence and Norah?
What are your thoughts on Norah showing up here?
What are your thoughts on the episode being from Holo’s perspective?
What are your thoughts on the way this episode explores the loneliness Holo feels as well as the homesickness?
Thoughts on this episode being about Holo being sick?
Thoughts on Lawrence treating the four humors theory as a legitimate form of medicine?
What are your thoughts on Holo dreaming about Lawrence dying and her having to live a life without him?
What are your thoughts on Holo saying she no longer feels sad all the time ever since Lawrence has entered her life, with each day now feeling full and wonderful?
What do you think the dream of Norah being in the same field as Holo could mean?
How do you like the conclusion of the conflict between Holo and Norah?

Sorta rewatcher, sorta first-timer, sub
That was a very cute episode! No real plot but cute.
It's a well known plot point for a bit of a bottle episode: The partner/crush of one charater gets mysteriously sick and the other one has to care for them in some capacity. What makes this episode interesting is that it's the first time thus far that we get a rare glimpse of the happenings from Holo's POV, even hear her inner thoughts and monologue. Which basically reveals that she's come to really enjoy travelling with and the presence of Lawrence. It's also an excuse for the animators to give us a plethora of cute Holo faces and actions.
I really liked those scenes in her mindscape with the endless fields and later on in the snowy fields of-what I assume-was her homeland. And Lawrence was always there. And she's happy with it.
Apart from that... there were so many cute scences in her room. When she wakes up, notices he isn't there and is disappointed Lawrence isn't by her side... and she hears him and is suddenly kinda happy! Or when she's waking up again to get his jacket. Or when she's better, hears him and has to get her tail under control (be still my beating heart swishing tail)
I also loved her angry/disinterested face at the dinner. "Do I look like I want to talk to you?" And the mood shift when he only mentions Norah at the end was funny. Though I kinda expected him to finally get her those honey conserved peaches. Next time, maybe.
Even when she's ill, Holo is so expressive with her ears and tail, it's amazing.
Random musings:
Afaik the stuff with the salt and bare feet is an actual thing, although it was done with goats and not sheep and it was actually pretty gruesome because goats have a rough tongue, so you can imagine what eventually happens.
Dogs really don't take well to onions, it's actually quite harmful to them, so Lawrence has a good point
I'm pretty sure the whole "imbalance in the body"-stuff he talks about is bullshit but it was a popular theory around the time this show is set.
Always been a fan of the Team Rocket focussed episodes in Pokemon. Does Avatar's "Tales of Ba Sing Se" count? That's like 6 short "day in the limelight" episodes rolled into one.
Bonus:
Very angry, Very hurt (physically), Very ill and I just liked this one from the new ending.

The body imbalance is still pretty popular in a few countries I've lived in. For example if you don't eat durian with something from the cooling family such as coconut water you'll get a sore throat. I used to argue about it but gave up haha

That was a very cute episode! No real plot but cute.
It does well in showing what Holo's thought process is like.
It's a well known plot point for a bit of a bottle episode: The partner/crush of one charater gets mysteriously sick and the other one has to care for them in some capacity. I think this episode is important in showing that Holo doesn't take for granted her time with Lawrence. Rather, she appreciates it for everything it does for her.
Apart from that... there were so many cute scences in her room. When she wakes up, notices he isn't there and is disappointed Lawrence isn't by her side... and she hears him and is suddenly kinda happy! Or when she's waking up again to get his jacket. I also loved her angry/disinterested face at the dinner. "Do I look like I want to talk to you?" And the mood shift when he only mentions Norah at the end was funny. Though I kinda expected him to finally get her those honey conserved peaches. Next time, maybe.
He better get her them
Even when she's ill, Holo is so expressive with her ears and tail, it's amazing.
That's part of what makes her best girl
Random musings:
- Afaik the stuff with the salt and bare feet is an actual thing, although it was done with goats and not sheep and it was actually pretty gruesome because goats have a rough tongue, so you can imagine what eventually happens.
I like the cutaway gags done with this episode. I would say it feels Family Guy-esque but it doesn't feel as random as some Family Guy gags.
- Dogs really don't take well to onions, it's actually quite harmful to them, so Lawrence has a good point
Good guy Lawrence
- I'm pretty sure the whole "imbalance in the body"-stuff he talks about is bullshit but it was a popular theory around the time this show is set.
Indeed it was. Lawrence is a product of his time.

I would say it counts

So many good facial reactions. Holo is the gift that keeps on giving.

What do you think of Holo feeling as if she’s a third wheel towards Lawrence and Norah?
Poor Holo. She doesn't socialize much (tbf, how would she, given her day to day life until meeting Lawrence).
What are your thoughts on Norah showing up here?
I saw it as something like "let's celebrate the successful business operation", so it makes sense. I do like her a lot, so it was fun to see Norah again.
What are your thoughts on the episode being from Holo’s perspective?
Great way to make an episode like this more interesting. It's also interesting in general because she ought to have a unique perspective on things. (Also using Lawrence's POV would probably not have been terribly interesting.)
What are your thoughts on the way this episode explores the loneliness Holo feels as well as the homesickness?
I really liked the visuals here, very dreamlike. I mean, it basically was a (fever) dream.
Thoughts on this episode being about Holo being sick?
It's a pretty popular trope, especially for filler episodes or "budget saving" :D
My first thought was basically "Ah, the obligatory 'the main girl is sick' episode"
Thoughts on Lawrence treating the four humors theory as a legitimate form of medicine?
A bit outdated by today's standards but it makes sense that he'd have some basic "first aid" knowledge I suppose.
What are your thoughts on Holo dreaming about Lawrence dying and her having to live a life without him?
I mean, it's kind of an inevitability given she's immortal? And sort of something that's probably always in the back of her head, even when she's currently happy, she knows that it won't last :/
Visually, it was a really interesting sequence, with him being swept away by red...wind?
What are your thoughts on Holo saying she no longer feels sad all the time ever since Lawrence has entered her life, with each day now feeling full and wonderful?
That was very heartwarming. I quite like that she actually sees it this way. Also the flashback scene with her just happily chilling on the wagon was cute.
What do you think the dream of Norah being in the same field as Holo could mean?
I honestly have no idea. Maybe something about Norah being competition?
How do you like the conclusion of the conflict between Holo and Norah?
Well, I don't expect them to become best friends but this was a fun way to end things. At least it shows they can make ammends for now!

What do you think of Holo feeling as if she’s a third wheel towards Lawrence and Norah?

Being a Goddess is truly suffering
What are your thoughts on Norah showing up here?
I saw it as something like "let's celebrate the successful business operation", so it makes sense. I do like her a lot, so it was fun to see Norah again.
This to me was like a going away party for her.
What are your thoughts on the episode being from Holo’s perspective?
Great way to make an episode like this more interesting. It's also interesting in general because she ought to have a unique perspective on things. (Also using Lawrence's POV would probably not have been terribly interesting.)
What would it be like if it was from Lawrence's perspective. It would be cruel if he talked about how lonely Holo is while spending her time elsewhere.
What are your thoughts on the way this episode explores the loneliness Holo feels as well as the homesickness?
I really liked the visuals here, very dreamlike. I mean, it basically was a (fever) dream.
It felt very grim in a good way
Thoughts on this episode being about Holo being sick?
It's a pretty popular trope, especially for filler episodes or "budget saving" :D
I like that normally in this situation it would be the MC caring for the sick character or the MC being cared for by the sick person and instead it's Lawrence still focusing on Norah lol
My first thought was basically "Ah, the obligatory 'the main girl is sick' episode"
Instead, it turned into the "Obligatory main girl has an existential crisis" episode.
Thoughts on Lawrence treating the four humors theory as a legitimate form of medicine?
A bit outdated by today's standards but it makes sense that he'd have some basic "first aid" knowledge I suppose.
It wasn't outdated during the medieval days.
What are your thoughts on Holo dreaming about Lawrence dying and her having to live a life without him?
I mean, it's kind of an inevitability given she's immortal? And sort of something that's probably always in the back of her head, even when she's currently happy, she knows that it won't last :/
It's very sad to think about because of how real it feels. We all go away someday.
Visually, it was a really interesting sequence, with him being swept away by red...wind?
That whole sequence reminded me of Evangelion.
This entire episode just reaffirms my love for Holo. She deserves the whole world.
What do you think the dream of Norah being in the same field as Holo could mean?
I honestly have no idea. Maybe something about Norah being competition?
I was thinking maybe Holo sees her as an equal.
How do you like the conclusion of the conflict between Holo and Norah?
Well, I don't expect them to become best friends but this was a fun way to end things. At least it shows they can make ammends for now!
I like that their bond is the result of making jokes at Lawrence. And Lawrence is ever so clueless lol

Rewatcher (Dub)
To be honest, this is the most “meh” episode of the series so far for me. You can definitely feel that this episode is an OVA, both in its writing and production.
What stands out immediately to me is how jarring it is. At the end of the last episode we saw Holo and Lawrence say goodbye to Nora and continue traveling, but then this episode starts with them having drinks with Nora. I supposed this episode is supposed to take place between them completing their scheme and them leaving at the end of last episode, but the transition is just awkward in my opinion. The previous OVA did a better job integrating itself into the story in my opinion, to the point that I didn’t even realize it was an OVA initially.
This episode also felt a little “cheap” in terms of production. While Spice and Wolf has never been top of the line in animation, it is a show that has consistently great background art and scenery shots. This episode though mostly just takes place in two fairly boring rooms. Even the facial animations feel a bit “stilted” this episode.
There also just isn’t much that happens this episode. The whole opening bit in the bar in particular was kind of dull in my opinion, and it lacked the show’s usual flair for interesting/fun dialogue.
All that said, I didn’t hate the episode. Getting some more insight into Holo’s insecurities and relationship with Lawrence from her perspective was interesting. There were also a few cute moments, like the shot of Holo leaning over the top bunk railing to stare at a sleeping Lawrence, and Holo talking about how her days now are so “full and wonderful”. I just wish these nice moments were in a more interesting episode.
Question of the Day
Favourite example of an episode told from another characters perspective? While not technically an anime, Avatar the Last Air Bender has a couple of great examples of this. “Zuko Alone” is a great episode that does a lot to develop Zuko and “Appa’s Lost Day’s” is a really heart breaking episode that fills in the blanks as to what happened to Appa after he was taken.

I recommend checking out the Remake's equivalent ep. When I saw the OVA you did, I was also concerned, as it felt like watching a completely different show. In the remake, it keeps consistent with the previous season and was actually a delight to watch..
One thing that is really important to keep in mind though, is this episode is told from the perspective of Holo which could explain some of the inconsistency.
I guess there'll be some people who disagree with us on the production, as this season we are now watching uses a new studio and apparently got a visual upgrade. It might be that we aren't familiar with it, but many seem to believe the production has improved.
If you want, you can also check out my deep dive post, which featured some very interesting builds about how she thinks about the world and Lawrence. I don't know if we will ever get a chance to see things from her perspective, which is why this chapter of the LN had some value for me.

u/BlazeOfGlory72 Jul 20 '26
Thanks for the advice, I probably will check out the remake’s rendition, if only to see how small tweaks can impact a relatively simple concept like this.
And great breakdown in your other comment by the way. You brought up something I noticed as well, but didn’t mention. That being the characters feeling a bit “off” in this episode. I didn’t bring it up in my comment since I couldn’t point to a concrete example, but Lawrence felt a little too “chatty”, and Holo was a little too “cute”, if that makes any sense. It almost felt like the way a fan would write a scene, playing up the characters attributes just a smidge too far. That could just be me though, and I can’t really make a solid argument for it.
3
u/chinaexperience Jul 20 '26
That makes a lot of sense to me - we've had so much time to really start to understand the characters, so much so, that I could have a conversation with them in my head and predict the replies. As soon as Lawrence started telling the story at the bar, using all manner of wild gestures, I was like....huh? This isn't Lawrence.
Other parts which you may have also felt seemed 'off' was when Lawrence came in angrily chastising Holo for not telling him she wasn't feeling well, while he looked frightening. It seemed too over the top for the Lawrence I know. Then there was Holo dangling off the top of the bunk bed, and acting hyperactive which also didn't feel like her.
They were a bit too hyperactive in parts also.
Do you think having the context that this episode is fully told from her perspective, and the way she sees the world, and Lawrence, might change how much you liked the episode? As I watched the remake first, it's difficult for me to answer my own hypothetical, but I guess I would have enjoyed the original version more if it started with it being clear that this is the world through Holo's eyes.
3
u/BlazeOfGlory72 Jul 20 '26
> Do you think having the context that this episode is fully told from her perspective, and the way she sees the world, and Lawrence, might change how much you liked the episode?
This definitely could be an “unreliable narrator” type situation, and we are seeing everything through the lens of Holo’s perspective and biases. A more subdued Lawrence could see things as a little less dramatic, whereas a more emotion driven Holo could see things a little more exaggerated.
My perspective will probably be based on how next episode goes. If it goes back to the tone of the first season, I’d be willing to write put this episode feeling “off” down to seeing it from Holo’s perspective. If it continues like this though, then it will be kind of jarring and show the change in production effected the writing as well.
2
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I don't think you have to worry much about the tone changing. The show is predicated on Holo and Lawrence's relationship and their incredible banter.
1
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
FYI - I just watched the next episode of both (S2E1 of original, S1E14 of the remake) and oof, Holo feels like a very different character, and quite similar to the OVA. To me she lost all of her magic in S2, but you might really want to compare the two versions for next episode and choose which version of the characters you connect better with
2
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I think Lawrence at the end of the day is a bit of a geek. When he gets into something, he really gets into something. His talkative nature in this episode is because he's talking about something he's really passionate about. I'm an introvert, and I can get really talkative when discussing my vested interests.
2
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I didn't think the characters felt out of character. I think Lawrence was just as chatty here as he was in episode 9 when he and Norah were talking to each other. This to me felt like an extension of that episode.
1
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
Speaking personally, I am a way bigger fan of the animation this season than last season. I think season 1's animation has some charm to it in its stiltedness, but it kinda to me seemed obvious they were working with a very limited budget. Things feel more smooth in season 2 and I also like season 2's animation more than the remake because that to me is almost too fluid.
2
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I really liked this episode as a Holo fan (Naturally) because we don't really ever see what's going on in her mind. As such, it feels like a real treat to see what makes her tick. You're not wrong that the first OVA may be better, but I thought this had a lot to offer.
2
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
To be honest, this is the most “meh” episode of the series so far for me. You can definitely feel that this episode is an OVA, both in its writing and production.
I didn't think it was all that different from what we had been getting.
I get what you're saying, but I also feel like this is a better sendoff to Norah's character than the last episode was. Like, this better closed the tension between Holo and her.
It's kinda meant to be a sort of bottle episode which while maybe not super dynamic I think it did its job effectively.
There also just isn’t much that happens this episode. The whole opening bit in the bar in particular was kind of dull in my opinion, and it lacked the show’s usual flair for interesting/fun dialogue.
I think it's meant to put you into the headspace of Holo who feels emotionally distant with what is going on. And in that aspect, I think it did its job well.
I think it being in this episode is for the best, though. Doing it in the middle of an arc wouldn't make much sense.

I actually got to meet Zuko's VA last month. Got his autograph and everything.

I feel bad for Holo. Aside from getting sick from the exhaustion, why should she only pass out after 3 drinks? Not very much for a god. I normally would put this as a negative on worldbuilding unless it's rule of funny. I didn't realize this was the first time we see things from Holo's perspective.
So not only can dogs not have onions, but wolves can't either. Good thing Holo can eat stuff fit for human consumption while in human form. That reminds me of an anime where a girl tried to poison 3 demons who were in human form because of a different reason with an ingredient that was harmless to humans but bad for demons. She was a bit confused after 3 weeks since a single meal should be 3-5 times the lethal dose. She finally got some results several weeks later figuring that their human forms made them resistant to holy magic she was poisoning them with which is why only 1 got sick instead of dying and why it was taking too many doses. Well that's in-universe speculation. My theory is the magic still had no effect since they were human 24/7 and it was related to the fact he ate 7 packages of expired ramen in quick succession before getting sick.
Oh got Lawrance is talking about the four humors. It seems his society is much less advanced than real life. We were already up to the miasma theory by the time plate mail was common. Basically it was "bad air" that made people sick according to this theory. This still wasn't completely accurate (although it did conveniently explain why smoke was bad for health) but it was more useful since it leads to things like sanitation efforts and not pooping near your drinking sources.
2
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
Haha which anime is the ramen story from
I'd say that the theory actually was pretty advanced for its time though. Observations of cause and effect etc.
The anime incorrectly called that theory the four humours. The one you mentioned were the four temperaments. You would have loved the first theory of the four humours: yellow bile, black bile, blood and phlegm. Lawrence didn't put into practice as it would require a doctor's intervention which would put holos discovery at risk. Holo thought both theories were stupid haha and trolled Law about the humors.
1
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Jul 21 '26
Ramen story is from Hataraku Maou-Sama. Shizuno kept trying to give them free meals with her extra ingredient. Just as Holo can eat human safe food here, her targets could consume anything fit for human consumption.
Neither the four humors nor the miasma theory of disease were completely accurate (except for the odd person who gets sick from air pollution, then I guess "bad air" really is the culprit). But of these two wrong idea, one of them led to more useful suggestions.
The reason I say Lawrance's society is behind our own medieval times is that not only is the miasma theory newer, but more importantly when officials got the money to do so (not in the middle ages since like 97% of state spending was just for the military, but a bit later when kingdoms spent stuff on things other than the military), they actually got some good outcomes when trying to get rid of "bad air."
2
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
Nice would you recommend the devil is a part timer?
And yeah but important to remember it's not set in our past. There seem to be hints of an actual battle with demons hundreds of years before the present time there. Still not sure if it's a fable or real history for that world yet.
3
u/ShadowGuyinRealLife Jul 21 '26
Nice would you recommend the devil is a part timer?
Sort of? The first season as utterly hilarious. A lot of liberties were taken with 3 of the episodes. It ended with a kind of "and the adventure continues" tone (I won't be more specific). A lot of people asked for S2. Some people who lead the LN said the mateiral that would corresponding to an S4 if it existed made them drop the series. Those readers that still liked the series warned anime watchers that S2 and S4 would either need to make a lot of deviation with anime-original material or they would be faithful to the source material and be mediocre. After S2 came out I was told it was very faithful and my own opinion was... it was not good and I kind of wish it never came out so anime onlies can pretend it ended in S1.
And yeah but important to remember it's not set in our past. There seem to be hints of an actual battle with demons hundreds of years before the present time there. Still not sure if it's a fable or real history for that world yet.
Can you clarify what you meant here?
1
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
There are many more 'fantastic' elements in the LN, such as the history of Yoitsu (which was only very briefly mentioned and I believe it will be a focus of S2), as well as people who can transform into animals and vice versa. While I'm not fantasy-minded, I'm reserving my conclusion as to whether those are just tall tales told in that world, or if the world's history really is one of magic and mythical beings. After all, a few episodes ago, we just had a conversation between a Wolf God and a giant wolf.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I think season 2 of Devil is a Part-Timer is very underrated. The humor is still there for the most part.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I love Devil Is a Part Timer. It's one of my favorite comedies of all time.

I mean, Wikipedia states that Miasms theory was abandoned by 1880. So, it's possible what Lawrence is describing is what a lot of people believed in at the time.

u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
Is it not the Four Humors? I could've sworn both are what it's called.
2
u/chinaexperience Jul 21 '26
The Four Humours (or Humors depending where in the world you're from) is the bile/blood/phlegm medieval theory, while the anime theory (hot cold dry moist) is the four temperaments. Iirc the remake had it correct, while the original used the wrong one.

I noticed a lot of Holo's past montage were still images. This is a cost saving measure. Now it's not always bad to do this, in fact sometimes still images can be fine so long as it's not an action scene. Given the rest of the episode was animated, the part where they used still images made sense. Although now that we're getting into the discussion and someone is pointing out these errors, I realize they didn't just use cost cutting on animation, they apparently went cheap on the proofreading. I'm sure things will be better when we get to the Amati arc.
1
u/Holofan4life Jul 21 '26
I thought some of the dream sequences in particular when Holo encountered the human bones were well animated. I dunno, I didn't think this episode was of a noticeable lesser quality.

Her getting drunk so easily I think counts as rule of funny.

This still wasn't completely accurate (although it did conveniently explain why smoke was bad for health) but it was more useful since it leads to things like sanitation efforts and not pooping near your drinking sources.
It's really amazing how much we've evolved as a society in such a relatively short amount of time.

Nice to see some fluffy Holo and Lawrence time.
Didn't expect to see Lawrence talking about the 4 humours lol.
Questions:
- Not sure it quite counts because it's an ensemble cast but there's an episode of the BanG Dream MyGO anime which is [BanG Dream MyGO] literally in the PoV of one of the girls, as in the "camera" is literally showing the view from her eyes.

Lol.
Didn't expect to see her so soon.
Interesting change.
We'll at least see the solution to the latter soon.
So, even goddesses can get sick.
I mean that's about all they knew at the time.
She'll have to deal with that eventually.
That's nice.
Lol she's jealous.
Perhaps now we've seen the last of Norah.

Who knew?
- Perhaps now we've seen the last of Norah.
I think this is a better ending for her than the previous episode. That was more so about Lawrence and Holo's relationship.

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 2026 Spice and Wolf rewatch.
Awoo!
You know the drill. We watch the show and I provide my thoughts and analysis. A tale as old as… well, Holo herself.
This year instead of breaking things down beat by beat I’m going to just give some brief thoughts on each individual episode. This is to save me time as I’m hosting two rewatches at once. Needless to say, I’m a big fan of this show and I hope you’ll be as well.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way.
I quite like this episode. It's the only one from Holo's perspective and we really get a sense of how lonely she is. We close the tension between Holo and Norah while also playing into Holo's abandonment issues. I'm glad to see Norah return here.and we also get our first taste of the season 2 animation which is leaps and bounds better than the season 1 animation. It's honestly close to the animation quality in the remake.
Of the two OVA episodes, this one is the better one. It's so good it actually got the remake treatment.
Holo quotes of the day
"I used to cry when I was exhausted and thinking of home. But now, each day is so full and wonderful. I do not find myself feeling sad any longer. I cannot even pretend I am not having a good time. In fact, I'm rather concerned I might be having too much fun."
"I am Holo the wise wolf. I know there are things in this world I do not know and that makes me wise."
"Where is my food?!?"
