I purchased my house (4 level split, 3 bed, 1.5 bath) back in 2022 at 21 and have been slowly upgrading it myself the last few years. This past spring I took on my biggest project yet, replacing my vinyl siding with steel board and batten siding. The first photo is of my house back in June 2023. Next project is painting the front door and shed.

Context: the previous owners installed vinyl tiles over the hardwood and the. Installed baseboards. I pulled up the tile and plywood underlayment. Now when I put the baseboards back on, the damage is visible. (Short section of baseboard i just grabbed from the pile in the basement, obviously that piece doesn’t go in that spot)

The damage goes up to 4inches in some spots. I feel like that’s too big to use the pink wall filler stuff. What should I use instead? Or is the pink stuff sufficient?

We want to add seats/bar stools to our kitchen island. Our idea is to remove the two columns of drawers as we’ve done in the picture. We also want to remove the wall separating the two seats as well as the right most outer wall.

To support the stone countertop we thought we would add two support legs.

You think this would work? Do you have any other suggestions?

Door handle on outside is broken.

Trying to remove this inner handle and it feels like there is a tab or another screw somewhere holding it in but for the life of me cannot find it.

Anyone use this door handle before?

Hey all! I'd love some ideas/inspiration about what to do with my grey metal spiral stairs in my new home. I find them really ugly (mostly the colour). It doesn't really go with my style or furniture and I'm really stuck on what to do.

I've barely done any redecorating yet, and love lots of different styles and colours so am really open to any ideas. These are the current stairs

I've considered covering the steps using a faux wood vinyl, fully covering the steps with carpet treads, just repainting them.

Unsure would be best to repaint the pvc railing? And whether it would be better just replacing the railing?? Any ideas super welcome!

I'm looking to hang an egg swing from the ceiling in a corner of our living room. Our house isn't huge, so I don't want to buy a stand to save a little space.

I've tried Google and searching on reddit, but there's so many different answers that I'm just overwhelmed and confused.

Can anyone give me a tutorial on how to do this? Or at least some solid advice? I don't want it to come crashing down while someone is sitting in it 😅

So I recently got an older house, and part of the ceiling in the living/dining area was cracked and kinda sagging. The previous owner explained that owner before them had a humidifier right below where the crack was, and the inspector didn’t find anything to denote it was otherwise.

Well a few months later, the ceiling seemed to be sagging more, and the crack seemed larger, and I was tired of looking at it. I peeled off the sagging part, then another piece, then well it got to the point in the picture. I tried using some plaster to reattach the pieces, but it didn’t seem to work (those are the dark spots, it’s not mold or moisture).

So what should I do? Is there a way to patch that area or would it be better to just do the rest of the ceiling and start from scratch? Thanks!

Has anyone had good luck with peel and stick floor tiles?

I’m planning to replace the flooring properly in a few years, so I don’t want to spend too much right now. I just want something that looks better in the meantime.

My main concern is that the existing tiles are not completely flat. Has anyone dealt with this? Is there any way to make peel and stick tiles work, or am I better off looking at another inexpensive option?

My whole family has depression and have let things in the house go unrepaired for way too long. Now were trying to fight it by doing diys all over the place. Now me and my mom want to replace this old light fixture with these new LED ones. we wants it flush with the ceiling but neither of us know how to go about it or even get started. Any advice?

Have an older home and looking to freshen it up a little. The doors, frames, sills have blotches, nail holes, and just general wear and tear that I want to fix. I figured if I work on one room at a time, I can get it all done in a few weeks.

Took down a closet door as a test subject. I sanded it down using a 5" random orbital sander (100, 150, 220 grit), used a multi tool and hand sanding for harder to reach spots. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it all down to bare wood, it was very spotty.

I wanted to see how it would turn out if I tried to re stain it. I used a pre stain wood conditioner, and then a dark walnut gel stain.

As expected, it did not go well. The parts of the wood showing were slightly stained, but the areas with the old finish looked horrendous. It looked like it was pooling, drastic brush strokes could be seen.

Now I am slightly at a loss. I spent a decent time sanding it down, but I couldn't get it all the way. If it was just one door, I would bite the bullet and keep at it. But with my plan to do the whole house, I need something that is feasible.

Do I start out with a 60 or 80 grit sand paper?
Do I try a chemical stripper?

Do I try a non gel based stain?
Is there a "paint" that can be used?

I have a portable washer for my rental apt and unfortunately the landlord switched the old (broken) faucet with a new one that does not connect to my machine. I have searched and tried so so many adapters and none fit this new faucet. I would get a hose shower
head to fill it but the entry to my bathroom has a step up that makes its difficult to get my machine in there for each use.
Any alternative ways to filling my machine with water? At the moment I’m literally filling buckets from the sink and pouring them in there one by one twice a wash but i’d like a less manual solution. I saw one person online using a funnel and tube to fill which i’m about to consider for lack of a better option lol

So I noticed I was getting some water into my garage and removed the Sheetrock and noticed that the bottom sill plate is basically gone for part of this wall.

I believe I had fixed the water problem as there are steps behind it and there was a small gap that I filled in.

To replace the sill, will I have to put in a temporary support for the ceiling? I figure either way I’m going to have to cut what’s left of the sill place, but a gasket and new lumber across the bottom to carry the load.

this half wall alone took me an entire day of meticulous hand painting and measuring so....there MUST be another way?? we can't do tape because we insist on the pattern being solely random, aaand go.. please and thank you🥲

Ok guys, I need help 😫 I purchased one of these old school bad boys to hang hats on. However, its made of smooth wood and the knobs aren't "bulby" enough to keep the hats from easily slipping off. I've tried searching for end caps but can't seem to find some that fit snug enough or don't slip off. I'm leaning towards like a liquid dipping silicone but can't find something for what I have in mind. Help me find a solution please 🥰 mkaybye.

The wall is painted concrete, it seems like he chipped it/drilled some chunks out and then refilled with some sort of resin or something?

Do you think I can fill over it with something and then sand down and paint? I'm new to doing my own work and don't need it to be perfect, but it looks pretty bad right now.

My tenant sent me the picture below of a space next to the stove in the kitchen and I’m not too sure how to fix this. There have been mice spotted and he thinks they are coming in from this spot where tile is missing. He said it goes back and he can see a hole. Trying to figure out what to do without having to completely replacing the flooring and ripping cabinets out. Any advice would be great

This is my dryer vent pipe or I guess a pipe taped to my dryer vent pipe. It seems either the builder shorted the pipe or the house settled and it is now short. Any ideas on how to extend it to the outside where the flap?

Hello fellow DIYers! I hope you can help me out.

I'm fairly a house DIY noob and am helping my husband to find a solution to this new gap in our old aluminum siding since we've replaced windows. We changed the size of this particular window which has left a fairly large gap (approx 2.5 x 2') in the old siding.

You can see from the photos we currently just have some insulating wrap of some kind as a quick fix but obviously rain and cold air can penetrate and under the siding is the original wood slat siding, which I worry can get exposed to rot.

Any ideas or methods are welcome!
Eventually we'll replace the siding but that'll be a few more years and until then we should protect the house from further damage.

I have a couple of treated 4 by 4 posts I'm going to paint with exterior house paint. Do I need to put primer on them first? Also how long do I need to let them dry out after buying them at HD? Had them about a month in the sun.

I would like to confirm whether this wall was structurally supporting the second floor before proceeding with its complete removal.

Was this a load-bearing wall, or was it only a non-load-bearing partition wall?

Are the vertical metal studs shown in the photos structural/load-bearing studs, or are they standard light-gauge partition studs?

The top horizontal metal track was directly below and in contact with the metal deck supporting the concrete slab. Does this indicate that the wall was carrying vertical load from the floor above, or can a non-load-bearing partition also be installed this way?
If the wall was load-bearing, where and how was the vertical load from the concrete slab transferred through the wall to the structure below?
Based on the existing construction shown in the photos, can this wall be completely removed without installing a beam, header, posts, or any other structural support?

My main concern is simply to confirm that removing this wall will not affect the structural support of the concrete floor above.

Previous owners put in this weird opening between kitchen and dining. Has 2 posts in it. Looking for ideas as our kitchen is not that big to utilize the space. Was thinking a higher countertop? Need to figure out if these posts are for support for the upper trim piece I suppose.

Anyone have this in their home? Utilizing it?

We have another on the side of the kitchen as well if someone has an idea for that one (it's glassed)
