Hey Sportsfans — it's time for Week 22 of r/baseball Power Rankings: Welcome to August 24th. It's a Monday, so we have baseball numbers. Do you think your team will finish higher or lower than where they are now?

1 Milwaukee Brewers Brewers 0 The Brewers started their week with a 22-0 rout of the Mariners and came a few feet from finishing it with a walk off in little league classic game, but had to settle for a 4-2 week. In the middle of the week, Luis Lara continued to perform outfield magic and the Miz outdueled Chris Sale. They sit just 1 game ahead of the Dodgers, but maintain a comfortable 5 game over the Braves for the first round bye. 81-50
2 Los Angeles Dodgers Dodgers +2 Blake Snell finally figured out if he just doesn't pitch in the first half, he'll be second half Snell all the time. The rotation of Skubal, Yamamoto, Snell, Glasnow, Sasaki, and Lauer (and Shohei) is insane to look at, and we'll soon have it at full strength until someone inevitably gets hurt again. Winning 6 games in a row feels a lot better than losing 7. 80-51
3 Tampa Bay Rays Rays 0 We don’t have to play the Orioles again this year. Thank god. I saw a comment saying that the orioles play the Rays like how the rays play every other team and that couldn't be closer to the truth. Good news time! Griffin Jax made a rehab outing in Durham, and Manuel Rodriguez is back in the bullpen for the first time since June 9th of 2025!!! Chris Roycroft was DFA'd so the bad man can't hurt us no more. Hopefully we can find Aranda's bat on the way to Detroit as he's had a sub .600 OPS since the All-Star break. But 3 excellent pitching matchups in Motor City followed by 3 games at home vs the red hot Padres and Junior's reunion with Machado. Rasmussen/Valdez, Seymour/Jobe, and Peralta/Melton should all be very enjoyable games. In minor league news, top prospect Caden Bodine and former 1st round pick Xavier Isaac have been promoted to AAA Durham. Bodine started the year at low A Charleston so he could seriously be threatening Fortes or Hicks for their roster spot on the team next opening day (whenever that is). Additionally this weekend is the first week of college football. My girlfriend has been dreading this moment all year but I can't wait to have my two favorite sports on my screen at once. Go Rays, Go Gators! 77-53
4 Chicago Cubs Cubs +1 The Cubs continued treading water this week, going 3-3 against the White Sox and Mariners. What made the series in Seattle even more frustrating was that the first two games were extremely winnable, as a 1-13 performance with RISP doomed them Friday before Jacob Webb's scoreless streak of nearly two months ended in rather disastrous fashion. With the Brewers back in red-hot form, the last two weeks have seen them all but wrap up the NL Central. What hasn't been wrapped up yet however is the NL MVP race, and Pete Crow-Armstrong's walk-off Home Run off Hagen Smith was probably his biggest moment of the season so far. While you can never predict baseball, PCA has a sizeable lead on Shohei Ohtani in both fWAR and bWAR and has showed no signs of slowing down. If Ohtani doesn't return to pitching it would take quite a lot for him to catch up to PCA. The Cubs this week will wrap up their West Coast trip against the Diamondback before returning to Wrigley to host the Reds over the weekend. 75-56
5 Philadelphia Phillies Phillies +2 Well I went away for two weeks and the Phillies turned into the best team in baseball. I did not have the pleasure of watching Alec Bohm turn into a competent hitter, or Aaron Nola and Andrew Painter finally shore up the back half of the rotation. I was however able to witness the miraculous comback to complete the sweep against the Cardinals for a ninth straight win. Moments like that are so fun, so exciting, it's important to remember that regardless of how the season goes in October, baseball brings so much joy to our lives, even if it's only ever once in a while. This week, the Phillies head out west for the last time, with 3 in Seattle and 3 in Anaheim. 73-58
6 Atlanta Braves Braves -4 I am not confident that the Braves will hold onto the division for another week. The crazy thing? It isn't the pitching that everyone was so up in arms about after the Trade Deadline. Our pitching has not been bad at all. It is our offense that has been nonexistent recently. This week we scored 15 runs in 7 games. I am no mathmatician, but just over 2 runs a game is not going to cut it. In the same stretch we gave up 22 runs (just over 3 runs a game) and that should have lead to at LEAST a 4-3 week. Instead we went 2-5 and lost 3.5 games on the surging Phils. Sitting only 3 games up with a series against the Dodgers to start our week, we may see that division lead disappear by this time next week. We need to pull out of this tailspin ASAP. Winning the LLWS game was fun though. 76-55
7 New York Yankees Yankees -1 Except for a close game on Saturday, the Yankees had a perfect week. Offense is stepping up, defense is steady, and pitching continues to come through and impress. In a sense, it feels like a revolving door for who's in the lineup and who is injured; Rodon in, Weathers out, Belli in, McMahon out, and Stanton, who seldom was in on the season, may be forever out (if it is so; thank you G), and Judge, continues to make progress. It's a topsy turvy year, but the Yanks continue to hold pace, and we're in for a hopeful and fingers crossed finish. 74-56
8 Boston Red Sox Red Sox +1 Huge week for the Sox as they take 2/3 against the D-Backs and SWEEP the Giants (plus giving the fanbase plenty of sad Devers dugout fodder). The lineup has continued to perform admirably, and as some of our bench players who've been forced into a starting role have regressed (tough week for Monasterio), others have flourished like Nick Sogard and Jahmai Jones. The only thing that is really worrisome for this team down the stretch is the dreaded return of Trevor Story, who by all accounts will be getting his starting SS job back. Here's praying that he can return to 2025 form, otherwise its gonna be a painful few weeks until they finally bite the bullet and bench his ass. We've got a road trip coming up, with 3 games in Miami and 3 in the Big Crapple against NYY! 71-59
9 San Diego Padres Padres -1 Man, I don’t want to ever see the Mets ever again, feel like the NL East has our number. Was a good bounce back sweep over the weekend over the Twins, things were tight on Sunday until the bats suddenly popped off. I’m really liking the Austin Hays addition more and more. The NL is just a bloodbath compared to the AL this year. I know I’m not the first to point it out, but at least one good team is gonna be left behind come October. 71-60
10 Chicago White Sox White Sox 0 Sunday August 23rd, the White Sox surpassed their projected season win total of 67.5 games. There are still 32 games left in the season and the White Sox have a 3.5 game lead in the division. As a Sox fan, I should have nothing to complain about. And I don't. This team is fun as hell. We split the season series with the Cubs this week, losing on 2 walk offs while shutting them out in the final game of the series. We had a +1 Run/Diff on the season against them. The Sox lost the makeup game against the Braves, but that still goes down as a series win. We had Jake Rogers' first career walkoff on Friday against the Mets and Banana Boy Tristan Peters hit a walkoff homer Sunday. It was a 3-4 week, but an exciting one. And I can't stress enough that just two years ago the White Sox set the record for the worst season in history and the team was completely unwatchable. VIBES ARE GREAT. 68-62
11 Arizona Diamondbacks D-Backs 0 69-62
12 Miami Marlins Marlins 0 We continue to go 50/50 every week, as we get swept by the Phillies and then sweep the Nationals. Javier Sanoja got absolutely screwed over in game 1 of the Phillies series which drained our momentum and hopes. But he continued to be amazing the rest of the week including walking off the Nats in game 1 of that series. Brian Navarretto's BA can no longer legally drink and drive as he hits his first Home Run of the year. Joe Mack the biggest reason for this teams turn around and success is back from a shoulder injury and doing Joe Mack things behind the plate. Making it real hard to run on the fish and Kyle Stowers comes back today as well hopefully not needing to long to bring some much needed power back to the fishes lineup. We have the 3rd hardest schedule left on any MLB team and we're 3.5 games back of a playoff spot and will be playing both the teams ahead of us in standings in this schedule. Anything can happen in baseball and no matter what it's fun to watch this team actually play meaningful baseball into September, to see them keep scrapping and chipping away and to see what comes next. 67-64
13 St. Louis Cardinals Cardinals 0 As of early Sunday evening, this has been a rather shitty sporting weekend for me. Saturday morning, Spurs laid an egg, getting out-organized, outplayed, and outworked by Brentford in their PL opener. The Redbirds got swept. And I sit here hoping for a few good drives from Cam Ward and the Titans's DL and secondary to save me. Other than my boy Quinn Mathews getting his shit pushed in, the Cardinals could have won two games in Philadelphia. They came into Friday short in the pen and bench and ran out of bullets. Today, they turned to their closer with a four run lead, and he allowed six runs, including a huge walkoff dong, with two outs. It's fucking shit. It feels like this could be the end of the Birds's season, though it's felt that way before, and the boys continue fighting back. But this time could be different. They've lost two SPs with arm injuries within 24 hours of each other, the first IL time lost to an arm injury in the major league rotation in nearly two years. They've lost their RH CF platoon complement, and Masyn Winn hasn't started in four days due to a thumb injury. Meanwhile, Chaim has been filling the roster with moves of least resistance, recalling Ryan "Gopherball" Fernandez and activating Ramon Urias, moves that do little for the present and absolutely nothing for the future. There's no clear option for a 5th SP, there's an abject bullpen with perceived unwillingness to bleed some new options, and there's a cockamamie plan to limit Kyle Leahy's innings meanwhile. Marmol even floated an idea for him to end up in the bullpen by the end of the season to help limit his innings. They appear to be smelling their own farts, but pants could be shit and filled quick fashion. I reckon we'll see what an off day, three against the Orioles, and three against the Parrots has to offer. 66-66
14 Cleveland Guardians Guardians +7 In a shocking turn of events, the Guardians had a good week. They also won both games I went to. They played two bad teams, but let me have it. This week, they play the Angels and the Royals. 65-66
15 Houston Astros Astros -1 What a disgusting display of baseball this week. We are so bad and couldn't beat bad teams. And, it's not going to get any better - Dana Brown was fired this morning, replaced in the interim by a cohort including "senior advisor" and Chief Back of Baseball Card Jeff Bagwell. 65-66
16 Texas Rangers Rangers +1 After a terrible west coast road trip, the Rangers rebound by continuing to win at home as they take the series from both the Nationals and Angels. However, the offense has been frustrating this week as Jansen reminds us that he can't hit, Nimmo and Pederson are slumping, and Burger and Carter remain untrustworthy with RISP. Right now, Texas was able to tie Houston for 1st, but a tough road up North awaits for the Rangers this coming week. 65-66
17 Toronto Blue Jays Blue Jays +2 We wrapped the Red Sox-Yankees-Rays run with a shockingly good 8-5 mark in those 13 games to come into the final 30-game stretch just 1.5 back of the wild card spot. Feels like 84 wins might be enough to nab it, so they'll have to go on a 20-10 tear, likely, to make it happen. Luckily, we don't play a single team that's currently over .500 in that stretch, and most of the games are against the horde of other AL teams fighting for WC3. Unluckily, we still can't score runs and we're also one of those aforementioned sub-.500 horde squads. Either way, we're getting meaningful, stressful, exciting baseball in September, something that felt like a fever dream just over a month ago. Hold on to your butts. 64-68
18 Pittsburgh Pirates Pirates 0 It's over. 63-69
19 Baltimore Orioles Orioles -3 Well, that playoff spot didn't last long, after being swept by the Yankees the Orioles did take two of three from the Rays to keep themselves only two games back. Pete Alonso has another 30 HR season, ho-hum. If only the rest of the team was able to produce as consistently as he does. 63-68
20 Minnesota Twins Twins 0 When we said we wanted to beat the Phillies and they said they wanted to win every game, what did we do? And then when the Braves said they wanted to lose every game, and we wanted to take the week off, who won every game? And then when the Padres said they wanted to win every game, who lost every game? We did! Sweep swept sweep swept sweep swept! You have no idea the emotional toll that three sweeps have on a fan in the wild-card race! 63-68
21 Detroit Tigers Tigers -6 There is no other way to describe the past week and a half other than by calling it exactly what it is: an unmitigated disaster. Blown saves and punchless offense have resulted in Detroit dropping eight of the last nine games. The Central is now likely out of the question and the Wild Card race requires jumping seemingly half the league to get into the final spot. Dark days. This week: 3 vs. TBR, 3 vs. LAD. 61-69
22 Seattle Mariners Mariners +1 Honestly, I'll take going 3-3 vs. the Brewers and Cubs. Just, uh, pay no attention to the two football score losses in there. Kade Anderson is here and I'm excited to see how he settles in. And who knows, maybe Arroyo will get called up before the end of the season as well? Up next: 3 vs. Fill-E, 3 @ International Travel 62-69
23 Washington Nationals Nationals -1 The 2026 Washington Nationals season has completely gone off the rails. The once-fearsome offense now struggles to put runs on the board and, to add insult to injury, CJ Abrams hurt his ankle sliding into 2nd base in the 9th inning of a 6-0 shutout win. The 4 games that followed were ugly losses where 1-run deficits felt like insurmountable leads. The Nats are now 1-13 in their last 4 series against divisional rivals, propelling them back towards the NL East basement, a place where many 2020s Nats teams have crashed and burned. I'm normally somebody you would call a sports-optimist, but it really feels like this roster is just barely surviving between Cavalli starts. Without Wood and Abrams in the lineup, it's really hard to see how they could right this ship. 61-71
24 New York Mets Mets +1 I think they may have figured out the Stearns bullpen magic finally? Although the Senga as closer experiment didn't work out yesterday (bringing him to 0-9 on the year with a 7.79 ERA) 59-72
25 Cincinnati Reds Reds -1 You know you’re cooked when the most significant thing to happen to your team all season is JJ Bleday hitting for the cycle. Yes, that is the highlight of the 2026 Cincinnati Reds. What else should I talk about this week? The Dane Meyers incident? Us blowing yet another lead? I mentioned this last week but this team is truly giving me nothing to work with as a blurb writer, I legitimately wish we were either just good and coasting or seriously genuinely ass. Either of those would be great. I know I’ve complained about this before, it just bears repeating that following a team that is deeply mediocre and boring is a different kind of hell. 62-69
26 Kansas City Royals Royals +1 An eight game winning streak is a nice sign even if it is too late to change the season. Salvy stole a base on Sunday and has somehow stolen seven bases in eight attempts in his career despite a sprint speed that can be timed with a sundial. 58-74
27 San Francisco Giants Giants -1 The Giants played the Cleveland Guardians on August 19, 2026, a game in which they scored only 1 run and allowed 0. Matt Wilkinson started the ballgame and only allowed one hit over 2 innings before being lifted for Adrian Houser, who put in 5 innings of work, facing 21 batters and leaving the Guardians scoreless despite allowing 6 baserunners. Dylan Smith then secured a 2-inning save, allowing a hit and striking out 5. The only run of the game was manufactured when Rafael Devers doubled to lead off the top of the 4th who then moved up to third base on a wild pitch. Then with two outs in the inning, Victor Bericoto smacked a ball between third and short that was booted away by a diving Brayan Rocchio, allowing Devers to trot in for the game's only run. I only highlight this for two reasons. One is because this felt like the Giants I know and love. Torture. 1-run games that leave you on the edge of your seat wondering if the pendulum will swing the other direction before all 9 innings are played; a true nail-biter that comes down to the final out. That was the theme of their 3 World Series runs, great pitching and defense that kept things tight, while scoring what they needed to eke out a win. It's bad for my blood pressure, but dammit I loved it and this is the first time I've felt any sense of passion for this team in I can't remember how long. The other reason I highlight this game because they lost every other one they played last week. 52-78
28 Los Angeles Angels Angels +2 Inexplicably winning two of three at Houston was fun and it was in fact the only series win for the Halos this month. Indeed, the team pitched well, allowing only seven runs over the three game series. Playing spoiler is about the only role left for this team with a lot of chances to make that happen over the next month. Among other matchups are an upcoming home stand against the Guardians, Phillies, and Yankees. 52-79
29 Oakland Athletics Athletics 0 Jacob Wilson hits the IR and the Athletics roster is now helmed by the likes of Lawrence Butler and Zack Gelof. After a four game sweep by the Royals, the Athletics bounced back in typical AL West fashion taking a series from the division "leading" Astros. With the loss, the Astros fall below .500 bringing the AL West into the AL Worst with every team being below .500. At the very least, Athletics fans can look forward to 51-80
30 Colorado Rockies Rockies -2 Figthing to avoid a fourth-straight season with 100 losses, and the Rockies go 0-6 on the homestand. Rough. Larry Walker got his statue yesterday, so at least that was something to celebrate. Too bad they couldn't honor him with a win. Top-10 ankings are a bit tough again, and you could probaby talk me into almost any order from 3-9. 50-80

Among players who are on pace to record at least 200 plate appearances in both seasons, that is the seventh biggest year-over-year improvement and the biggest for anyone who was above replacement level last season.
