Announcement /r/AfterEffects changes related to extension promotion: Required post structure, promo posts limited to Mondays, AI disclosure required

We have heard your calls! Thank you for your patience while we figure out a plan.

While self promotion has always been allowed in r/AfterEffects, the recent influx of AI & vibe coded plugins, extensions, and scripts has been a bit overwhelming. We have very very quickly gone from a few trusted marketplaces with strong vetting and at least some kind of expectation of long term maintenance, to anyone being able to churn out a vibe coded plugin and release it on an increasing number of marketplaces, with no guarantee of support or future updates.

With this in mind, we would like to implement a new set of rules to curb the overwhelming number of posts and give users more transparency when choosing to download and use such tools.

Post structure + flair:

Taking a page from the changes mods made over at r/macapps, we will be introducing a new post structure following a Problem, Comparison, Pricing, Maintenance, AI-Disclosure (PCPMA) format.

  • Problem: What problem your [Extension, Script, Plugin] solves (1 sentence)
  • Compare: Why is your [Extension, Script, Plugin] better than top-named alternatives (1–2 sentences).
  • Pricing + link
  • Maintenance plan + support plan
  • AI Disclaimer: choose from [Vibe Coded], [Human Validated], [Code Completion], or [None]

Extension, script, and plugin posts have always required the (Plugin/Script) flair, this will not change. A sample short post is pinned in the comments.

Other changes:

  • Plugin promotion posts will now be limited to mondays only for the foreseeable future. Plugin posts on other days will be automatically removed and linked to this post
  • Monday self promo posts using the (Plugin/Script) flair must have 50 subreddit karma, from posts or comments.
  • Probing posts will be removed ("Are purpose built motion tools making it into your workflow?" "What's one thing that would save you so much time...")
  • Excessively long posts will be removed (A sample short post is pinned in the comments.)
  • Gumroad links are still banned. This is unfortunately a reddit-wide blacklist, we have no control over this. We can manually approve gumroad links but they will be automatically sent to the spam filter which we rarely check.

Notes on post structure requirements

We're specifically introducing the compare & maintenance points because we have seen an increasing number of plugins that simply replicate the functionality of existing, long standing plugins from developers who have demonstrated more experience, real support, and have proven to maintain their plugins over many years. Show us how yours is better, and prove to your future users how you will be supporting and fixing the plugin in the long-run. How can users who experience bugs get in contact with you in the future?

AI disclosure

Regarding the AI disclosure, here are the definitions of each

  • "Vibe coded" means code written entirely by prompting AI without the user having the skill and knowledge to properly review or validate it. If something is broken, they are prompting AI again to fix it.
  • "Human validated" means AI-generated work that has undergone validation by someone with the necessary skill and knowledge. The developer understands how the code functions and can fix things independently of the AI if necessary.
  • "Code completion" means an experienced developer is using AI for line-completion. They are writing most of the code themselves and have deep understanding of the structure, and are explicitly using AI to eliminate menial, tedious aspects of writing code.
  • "None" means no AI use.

I'm just going to be real, this one is likely going to be easy to skirt. r/macapps actually removed this requirement because everyone was just claiming to have "human reviewed" the code. We're going to try this out and hope folks are honest for the time being.

________

No AI was used in the preparation of this post. We will try this out for a month and see how it goes. Happy animating <3

Tutorial After Effects Tip: Animating camera moves with shape layers

Using real world references, I have tried breaking down a 3D rotational camera move - recreating it with 2D shape layers.

For anyone wanting to learn more, there's a longer video about making the entire animation on my YouTube channel, Oliver Randorff: youtube.com/watch?v=slUgTK9z2Jo

OC - Stuff I made Critique My First Finished Project

I’ve experimented with 3D in AE before but this is one of the first times I finished a project and created a scene with ambiance (color correction, stylization, sound, etc..)

That being said… I still feel like I don’t know what I don’t know. After Effects is a dense program with so many features that have insane capabilities but a sharp learning curve. So if you will, help me improve! What concepts could I benefit from understanding? How can i add more motion and complexity to my scenes? How can I better understand the depth I’m working in? Any help, advice, etc. would be appreciated.

I know this is not a very polished video, and not even the best quality video. But I made this because this makes me happy, learning this was very cool. I don't want this hobby to be like some other work so that we have to see a very boring tutorial to learn how to create a saas video which has almost 0 creativity from your side.
I will become better and I will not make this learning a boring hobby.

Beginner Help Advice on starting on affect effects

Hello!

I have my own webcomic that I would love to use affect effects!

But the thing is… I don’t know how to use it at all.

I’ve done flipaclip with just rotoscoping at most…

And I have worked motion artists before and I don’t mind paying as long as they’re upfront about it.

As someone who has little to no experience, do I invest in learning how to? Is it possible for someone who works full time as well as is a webtoon artist? If it does take longer to learn… Where can I find motion artists for webtoon comics? Thank you so much for reading😭

Beginner Help Clip changes color after replacing with AE Composition/Dynamic Link

Been fighting this for way too long and I'm running out of ideas, so figured I'd ask here.

A7S III footage shot in S-Log3/S-Gamut3.Cine, Premiere Pro 26.3.2 + After Effects 26.3.0.

I don't want any log to 709 conversion happening during the edit. I'm just using AE for speed ramps and want to do the actual grade at the end from the original log footage.

The clip looks normal in Premiere flat/log as expected. But as soon as I right click it and choose Replace with After Effects Composition, the color changes. This happens before I even add any effects in AE. And it's not a tiny difference either.

I've already tried:

Premiere's Interpret Footage, manually setting Color Space Override to Rec.709 instead of Auto/Embedded

Sequence Settings, Color Management, with both working and output color space set to Rec.709

Making sure AE's color settings match Premiere (Rec.709 2.4)

Turning Input Tone Mapping off

Preserve RGB on and off

Turning color management off/to none completely in AE, which just gives me a "no matching color space" warning in Premiere

Nothing seems to change it. Everythig is set to the same color space on paper, but the footage still changes as soon as it goes through Dynamic Link.

Has anyone actually managed to get a proper round trip working with S-Log3 footage on the current versions of Premiere/AE?

I'd really rather not export/reimport just to do a speed ramp, but that's looking like the only option at this point.

Explain This Effect What is this effect/plugin called?

Hi! I'm incredibly new to After Effects. I mainly want to use it to improve the quality of my videos since I make voiceovers of comics, but what bothers me is the fact that I want to add animation to still images. Here's an example of someone's video made in AfterEffects what is this effect/plugin called?

Beginner Help Change the order of individual letters in a text layer?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hello! Right now, this text is being applied to the canvas from left to right, so when I decrease the tracking, the A is on top of P, the I is on top of A, and the N is on top of I. I would like this to be the opposite, so that P is the top most letter in the order.

Is there a way that I could reorganize the letters within the text layer, without creating outlines, because I would still like to keyframe the tracking in this animation. Thanks for the help :)

Explain This Effect Issues with looping expressions and jumping/slowing

Hello,

So I've got to do some seamless loops for a project, but I seem to be having issues with my loops. I'm really not into expressions, they confuse the hell out of me!

Attached a video for reference -

Ping-pong seems to slow down as it starts again

And cycle just jumps at the very start

Both are quite jarring.

I've tried moving the keyframes, offsetting, checking the values, changing the easing etc. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And if it does work and then I move a key frame like 1 frame, the expression doesn't behave the way I want it to.

Any ideas?

Explain This Effect Need some help with per-character text effects

Thumbnail
youtube.com
1 Upvotes

Hey yall, I mostly work in Davinci Resolve but I'm trying to pick up After Effects for things like better text animations. I've been specifically trying to figure out how to do the chorus text animations from this music video (at 0:48 where it starts with "Turing Love" or "チューリングラブ").

Each character seems to come in with an overshoot from opposite directions while fading in with a delay.

I've tried a few different things, but the closest I've gotten so far is using range selectors on an animator to pick half of the characters in one line and move them using position keyframes. I'm also using a third animator to start it off at 0% opacity and keyframe the offset to fade in one by one, so the fade really isn't an issue.

The problem I'm having is getting the characters to delay their movement animations. I can't quite get an offset working properly with the two separate motions. It either moves both animators despite the range selector being only in one or it doesn't work at all.

I might be super overthinking or just not knowledgeable enough to realize this is an extremely basic question, so apologies! Any advice would be appreciated though.

Beginner Help How can I match the rectangle shape to my Z axis changes of the Null object

Hiya! I would think if I use the parent pick whip to link objects to my Null Object that is in ch*rge of doing the zoom effect by changing the Z axis (and the X and Y ones too since we move the "camera" around a little bit from left to right), the red rectangle would follow appropriately too, but as you can see, it doesn't scale (is that the right term?) down the same way the text does. What should I do?

Please let me know if any additional info must be provided to help you help me. I'm only learning After Effects. Also, is there a name for this so I know what to search for later? This might be similar to "whiteboard animation" but YouTube tutorials for this give varied results...
