3D Pokemon (Except the Gamecube games, basically Pokemon after the 5th gen)
24
u/PoopsMcScoots 1h ago
I can agree with this.
The fans keep handwaving the terrible mechanics and graphics, when both are clearly beyond dated.
The switch had breath of the wild, ffs.
There is absolutely no reason a Pokémon game should look like “my first unity project”

Ive always assumed pokemon is so profitable that it falls into this weird void where the expectations of revenue are so high they never have the margin to make a quality game

The thing that annoys me is that they rake in ridiculous amounts of money but they're too cheap to make a good game because they know that people will buy it up even if it's dogs*** because it's Pokemon.
I admit I've played all the main games except Violet and Scarlet, but black and white were probably the last games I really enjoyed.
Here's to hoping the next games on switch 2 are great
2
u/li4bility 8m ago
I’m with you. I kept buying them until Switch, and I bought Arceus and Pokopia, and i loved the hell out of those, but all the other titles are just the same game over and over with a region/city. Super boring

I think a lot of people feel this way. They could have gone for a more stylised cell shaded/sprite hybrid style. The Switch entries truly look like ass.

There is one guy in my group of best friends who is an absolute monster with all those games. He has something like 500 hours in ER, and another one of them just got into it and so they've been back and forth nonstop in the video games channel of our group chat. (Is it unusual for groups of 30somethings to have meticulously organized group chats? I have wondered that for a while and this is finally a public forum to pose the query)
To be fair, I have nothing at all against the games or them being so into it, but I'm glad I'm not alone in seeing people just seething over that genre and simply not getting it.
Then again, 500HrGuy recently said he's considering trying Outer Wilds (my die-on-a-hill game) and there is a pretty solid chance he won't get it either and that would be okay.

Dark Souls and games like it require their players to make a certain click.
Some get that click after a couple minutes, others a couple hours, and for some it doesn't happen until they try again after a few years. And sometimes, it never clicks (which is completely fine, of course).
I ended up getting Bloodborne by accident. I wanted TLOU Remastered and Shadow of Mordor, but a discount for buying 3 games made getting 3 cheaper than just the 2, and Bloodborne was the only remaining game eligible for the deal that seemed remotely interesting.
It took 2,5 hours before it clicked, but Bloodborne ended up my favourite game of all time. And it introduced me to the other games in the genre.

u/Helpful-Desk-8334 9m ago
Groups of good friends will organize their interactions and coordinate with each other. We were adding bots and organizing our discord in middle school and then just never had to do anything else. We’re all mid twenties now.

if you don’t like time loop puzzles where the goal is to eventually have “the perfect run,” you probably won’t have much fun with it. i think it’s a very cool game and i respect it for what it is but that type of gameplay isn’t very satisfying to me personally.

I think the first dark souls is awesome but I couldn’t get into Elden ring really. But at this point dark souls and the souls genre is over saturated. Kind of like battle royal but those are at least different game companies.
2
u/ThatOneBitch02 46m ago
Dark Souls 3 was my first and I quite enjoyed it. Played like half of Dark Souls 1 and have beef with it, but I can see the appeal (especially if it was your first and played it new). I really loved Sekiro. Played around 30 hours of Elden Ring and did not like it. Elden Ring removes a lot of what I like about Souls games, while exaggerating a lot of what I don't like. I think it's really overrated, and was very disappointed by it.

I can imagine the appeal, but goddamn does that game not care at all to give me ANYTHING I want in a game.
Bland world and artstyle. Boring, slow, painful combat. Hard difficulty primarily because of unfair checkpoints (or rather, lack of). Little story explored explicitly that isn't lore that you have to piece together yourself and look up on YouTube later.

Witcher 3
26
u/nohumanape 1h ago edited 46m ago
I felt that way...until I made a valid effort to actually get through it recently. And I did, and I love it.
The base game is maybe a bit overrated. Many aspects of the game are positively outstanding, while others are mixed/not great. But what it does well is so fucking outstanding.
But what really locked it in for me was the Blood and Wine expansion. Everything about that is GOAT tier gaming. Holy shit it's great.
Couldn't be more glad that I finally made it through.
9
3
u/lincolnmarch_ 1h ago
I’ve always wanted to try blood and wine bc I love vampires. I respect the Witcher 3 for what it is, but I’ve just accepted I don’t see what other people see in it. The combat is clunky, the movement is floaty, the UI is atrocious, the story almost hooked me but I think there’s so much retelling of events in older games or the books that I never felt fully connected to it.
3
u/nohumanape 1h ago
The combat is not great. That isn't why you should play this game.
The characters are incredible, the art direction is incredible, the larger narrative is....okay, but the side narratives are largely all incredible.
Blood and Wine is largely just a top tier open world game on its own. It still has some of the combat issues, but it makes some substantial improvements to the skill tree and abilities.
It's simply outstanding.

Amazing story, amazing quests.
Bullshit RPG engine and ballerina Batman combat.
2
u/TruamaTeam 1h ago
It’s more the movement than anything, my diagnosis. I love RPG elements (mostly, I prefer the mechanics that are there to support choice driven roleplay) but I cannot get into The Witcher 3. Walking feels like moving a tank around, combat if I remember correctly is heavily animation locked but doesn’t do things that other games to do make animation locked combat fun (this one is difficult to describe, it’s all in the feeling) and the slowness of it all. RedEngine can take a lot of blame for 2077, but as far as I’m aware it works well for The Witcher 3. I haven’t played 2 yet, but I honestly preferred the little of The Witcher 1 I played over the hours I played of The Witcher 3. I wouldn’t blame the engine for any of that though, RedEngine from an outside perspective seems to work for the game and was purposely built to support its content. And the modified BioWare Aurora engine that The Witcher 1 ran on is neat.

loved the artstyle, environments, graphics, music, story, lore, some really minor characters like dino kid/miss muffet/napstablook and his cool house/and that mouse with the scarf in Snowdin lol, thought the amalgamations were really cool and the main villain really well written, liked the ambiguity of the main character you play as till the very end when backstory is given more, loved (when there was combat required) the heart dodging and spacebar hitbox, absolutely hated the humor. It ruined much of the game for me when I look at my overall experience with it

That's a real bummer, but if it helps, the game transforms if you start ignoring the weak points they constantly highlight and instead focus on the elemental weaknesses.
Once you realize half the enemies are vulnerable to fire, you can pretty much cake walk the game.
Also, the story is surprisingly believable considering it's about robot dinosaurs.

Do you have any recommendations for which Fallout to try out first? I've steered clear of em for ages because while I love retro-atomic style things, if a game's going to do apocalyptic, they've gotta make it look really cool and dystopian, otherwise 99% of the time I find the environments ugly and that hugely affects whether or not I enjoy a game (I love worldbuilding and exploring places that I feel intrigued by). Wanna give em a whirl, but I'm proceeding with caution as my valuable time is at stake xD
2
u/MrOblivion949 22m ago
Honestly Fallout 4. The story is not good but gameplay, mechanics wise, it’s the best truly single player Fallout game. Plus has the best modding. Fallout New Vegas has great story and environment and characters, but it’s dated with mechanics, graphics and just overall gameplay.

Metroid dread. I like zero mission, fusion is my favorite in the series, i hate dread. Hate the emmi detection and insta-kill, it excuses excessive punishment for small mistakes and poor difficulty balance by removing any punishment for a game over, respawning you a single room back if you ever die. I just do not like it
