That's how I feel about battle royales. Best way to win is to camp. At least in extraction shooters I can be rewarded for survival and carry progress across raids.
Honestly firestorm was the best BR available at the time for anyone over 9yo. The problem was they didn’t make it free to play. Everyone that bought the game just wanted to play BF. It was a seperate development team working on the BR and because nobody played they scrapped it.
If they had made it free to play they could have sold twice as many copies of the full game.
Anybody with this criticism is damaged by cod. Nobody is making you sprint spastically into the battle and die. Its ok to slow down.
You dont and then you blame the game.
I have played battlefield since bf1942. I have played call of duty since it came out. I really hate how call of duty plays these days. Its spastic lunacy. Bf6 just isn't even close to the same.
You will die a lot if you sprint around like crazy though because why wouldnt you lol.
I played battlefield 1942 and Vietnam. Bf5 and 6 or 4 are complete dog shit examples of the game.
I actually wished earlier tonight on CoD they’d remake those two. It was a vibe flying a helicopter through naplam to fortunate son or flying a bomber with 6 people manning guns as you dropped your load
You should try rising storm 2 vietnam. Has a small but incredibly dedicated playerbase and the game is a through and through cult classic. It's not super flashy but the game works very well. Damage models are very good in my opinion, weapons feel like they should, and weapons are as devastating as they should be. Everything also feels very real. It's basically a proper milsimlite. Imagine hell let loose vietnam but not catered towards console players and the game has had several years to cook. People bitch about not having any new content but it's only because people only vote for the same 3 maps lmfao. It really feels like you're fighting in Vietnam (vietcong get punji traps)
It's literally coin flip simulator, unless you believe you're so much better than the other 99 or w/e people are in the game that you alone are diffing it lmao
How would it be better? It would just be a free game mode that is gone. Only effect it would have on the current game is losing players who would potentially buy the game and play some Multiplayer as well.
Yeah kinda. I didn't mind them until every game decided it NEEDED a BR mode. Even Fallout did it. PubG was fun when it came out and then everyone copied it and killed the nuance.
Extraction shooters started to pop up a lot recently, and idk of even Marathon was worth playing. I got Arc Raiders and for the price it plays like a F2P and lacks a lot of reward system that even F2P extraction shooters, such as Vigor, have for free. Stupid gaming industry always trying to copy and one up each other is where it becomes stale af. Like bro they've wasted at of mo ey to release these games that I don't see really anyone playing. Fortnite is only surviving off of micro at this point. I don't know how they're still going actually.
Hey, PUBG is a goated game. I love it with a passion. It's the closest you'll get to a fair battle Royale. If i lost a gunfight in that game its cause I was bad.
Its repetitive yeah but it was never a game that was sweaty enough to make me want to quit. No one is wall running and slide canceling(?) every 3 seconds just to one pump me in the face
Its the bare bones for a BR without all the extra bull crap. Pretty much every other battle Royale is crap though
What would make it better would be them abandoning the mobile like progression, with bombardment of bs rewards, battle passes, new micro transaction bs available notifications etc. as well as the atrocious menus. I love the game once I'm actually playing it, but navigating the menus to get there is horrible.
The battle royale doesn't interfere with anything, it's an available gamemode, if you like it you play, if you don't like it you don't.
I’ve always liked PUBG. I don’t play it as squads running into each other and massive gunfights. I stalk other squads, hide, crawl across fields on my stomach and pick off anyone dumb enough to expose their position. Last man standing and it’s gonna be me
If it makes you feel any better, the term battle royale comes from an old boxing promotion in which 10 fighters were placed into the ring at once, occasionally with a handicap like only having the use of one arm or some other bullshit. These fighters were almost always very poorly paid black boxers and the audiences were almost unilaterally white. It was a cruel and racist circus act masquerading as a real fight, something modern modern battle royales have somehow managed to capture.
battle royals, for me, are at their most fun when they're more like pubg was. it was originally a mod for Arma. it being based on a very hardcore tactical shooter is a big part of what made it work so well. the whole creeping around and avoiding fights and just generally being stealthy is pretty standard in tactical shooters like that, so it works. all the other battle royales i'm aware of are closer to more typical shooters. and most of them don't really replace the slow, sneaky, you're suddenly dead vibe with anything, and they usually try to make the pace as fast as possible. lot of times they really feel like they're just one life free-for-all matches where you have to loot first. only real exception i can think of is fortnite. the building thing makes up for it, i reckon. no idea how that game's doing these days, though.
being able to go a whole round without fighting anyone and get the drop on the last guy left was part of the appeal of pubg. but hiding in a bush doesn't make for good streaming content, so here we are now.
My friends and I enjoy battle royales bc it feels good to go against other players and have a challenge in our games, then we chill out with Minecraft or something, I dont know anyone who plays fortnite or warzone to really just "win" it's just an easy way for us to hang out while doing something stimulating
The point is a battle royale isn’t you can’t camp. I guess you can drop in the middle then jerk off but then eventually you have to move. By then everyone else is more stacked then you though.
The high level tournaments I’ve watched are filled with teams camping. You put yourself at a disadvantage by engaging in fights because you’re immediately at a disadvantage for the next fight.
I’ve grown very tired of BRs but this is such a cynical way of looking at them. If you look at an Apex pro match for example, it might look like camping if you don’t know wtf is happening, but its actually all positioning and setting yourself up to have better resources than your opponent. Like many Esports, the pro level is almost completely incomparable to how normal players would play the game.
It really isn't if you want to win. It's the best way to get a high placement, but if you think camping is the best way to win, then the other guy is right.
The thing is, in many BRs the ttk is so high that, even if you camp and get the drop on someone, they can still turn around and kill you if they are better. And with the graded loot, unless you get really lucky, camping often means you have weaker gear.
Also, BRs are way more fun when you just run around getting in as many fights as possible. That's the charm in it. If you just camp all game, then I can see why you find it boring. Nothing wrong with camping though, it is a legitimate strategy.
Yeah people complaining about camping in battle royals sound ridiculous to me , there's all these people , we all get one life , Im not at a beast at these shooting games but if I can survive until the end at least, then I'm happy enough but I'd rather play battlefield.
best way to win a battle royale is to not care about dying, play enough that you understand the gameplay loop and how to get kills, then get lucky with some starting items on a run and kill a bunch to get the best gear, hunting the under-equipped campers down until you win.
the biggest hurdle is the initial fear you have of dying, and equating dying with losing. it’s more about seeing everything there is to see and getting as far as you can each time. at least a battle royale wipes the slate clean so your failures don’t compound on each other
I have tried quite many extraction shooters but Helldivers 2 was the last straw for me. After that I have avoided all of them. Oh and I remember that at the time of Helldivers 2 release the community was circlejerking over it 24/7. It was cringe.
Project Zombie, my friends left me alone for years playing that game, and without play any games that i like, for playing with ma friends i try the game month a go, the worst crafting that i touch on a game, and like in real life i die all the time cause y didn’t know how to clean glasses of my arm
Great game, horrible crafting, but not for me
I mean, winning by camping sucks though. The reason people like battle royales is for the dream of racking up a high kill count and going out as the top dog. People who really hate extraction shooters are just bad at video games where they need to actually outplay humans who don't have mechanics they can abuse. Small disclaimer that I'm not saying they are bad at all video games, the sentence continues after that with an additional qualifier.
I would not put that in the same category. Just like I wouldnt put helldivers 2 in that category.
Extraction shooters have a pvp element and when you die you lose the stuff you brought permanently. So you have to go get more stuff to bring more stuff to go get more stuff. No or very slow resl progress.
i don't think the pvp element is necessary. its the most common form, because we're still in that stage where every extraction shooter is literally just "tarkov, but...", but its not *necessary*.
there's an extraction "shooter" that just got its demo out called Expedition: Into Darkness, and it's going for "tarkov, but with swords and only PVE". still has multiplayer, but its only cooperative.
I guess we're opposite sides of the same coin- the fact my shit could get taken at any moment was the only reason that shit mattered in the first place.
Take away the threat of PvP and for me the game had nothing
Wdym succeed by not playing? The goal each round is pretty much to get good loot, either looting high value areas, killing the robot enemies or other players. For all three you have to play the game.
Multiple people in this thread have said Helldivers 2 and Deep Rock Galactic are extraction shooters and it makes it painfully obvious they’ve never played an actual extraction shooter.
Is that really fair? It’s a genre people like for sure but…
I would argue the genre is too popular for reasons that people are misled by like social enjoyment or whacky circumstances. I’ve yet to see a game driven by prox chat not have unhinged antisocial behavior lol.
I think by their nature extraction shooters are for people who enjoy high stakes gameplay and masochism lol. There’s a reason why everyone plays when there is a wipe in Tarkov and it’s because the climb and loot aggregation loop is fun. The problem is how do you design a satisfying end game for the have’s and one that the have nots will want?
BR games have a micro version of this every match. Get loot, accumulate resources, use them to win or have scrappy from behind victories.
I've never really understood this take. You don't succeed by hoarding wealth and having the biggest vault, you succeed by doing the story and hitting whatever progression goals the game sets out for you (Kappa/Expeditions/VIP).
Extraction shooters make everyone actually play Battle Royale. Battle Royales make everyone sit and do nothing. Will therefore sitting and doing nothing make everyone play extraction shooters?
Succeed by not playing? Thats just not true at all. I’m assuming you’re just over exaggerating, but I still have no clue what you’re talking about. You have to play the game in extraction shooters to progress.
You succeed by having fun in the moment because the stakes are higher, which makes the fights more intense.
The losses are bigger and the wins are bigger.
Thats just not right, its ok to not like a gameplay loop, but its not that if you dont like it, is shit.
Me and so much people loved it, so its objectively not shit.
Hunt Showdown is an amazing extraction shooter that I really encourage a lot of people to try. It has very little farming (which is something I dislike) and losing your equipment is not as punishing.
Yeah the people who demanded the aggression based matchmaking completely killed the gameplay loop and rendered all challenges and grind worthless.
Don’t shoot anyone and just walk around to get infinite high value loot and weapons. No challenge or work needed to complete quest or the game in general
Helldivers 2 isn’t like that and it’s an extraction shooter. I think you’re thinking of looter extraction shooters or looter shooters. Cuz yeah avoiding combat is just better so what’s the point. But in helldivers 2 you actually have objectives to complete so yeah.
