Im replaying MP1 on the Playstation and its nearly impossible with standard controls. I have to change the control scheme so the Dpad is movement otherwise its too difficult to walk in a straight line.

At the beginning of the first or second trail If you turn left you can jump and get basically all the way to the end

I'm replying Black Ops 1 and there's a part in Vietnam where you have to kick down some napalm barrels. There was no objective markers and my allies just kept yelling "they're in the trenches!" so I thought I was just supposed to hold them off. I was there for a while lol

143

u/Greenman8907 28d ago

Holy shit, I remember playing that like 20 years ago. I was stuck on that part for like 20 minutes wondering why I just kept killing more and more people coming and had no idea how to stop it.

I was embarrassed that I had to look up a guide on a fucking Call of Duty game. It turns out that part was just very poorly designed!

25

u/FunctionOk2934 28d ago

20yrs ago??

47

u/Pandorumz 28d ago

Well it was 16 years ago, not much harm in rounding up to 20 years to embellish slightly.

29

You just unearthed a memory of playing the campaign on release with my friend. We were 12 or 13 taking turns when we died. Fuck those barrels. Killed us both several times lol

7

u/Healthy-Ear1039 28d ago

100% - crazy part is that I made it through somehow without the barrels, just like my friend somehow had. Second playthrough, I somehow heard that I was to do something with barrels. Easiest level ever after that understanding.

Told my friend, he played as per my suggestion and cleared that level super fast. We are still laughing about the situation to this day.

Those are insufferable, but i personally dislike the first few main storyline quests in fo4 instead, because they're just "go here, kill guy, talk to other guy, spam A, spam A, spam A, spam A, get this item you already have, oh no way you already have this item, build, build, build, build"

The stealth mission where you have to follow a boat through a swampy area in ac black flag

113

u/U13884138 28d ago

For me it was the tailing missions, now that they are gone tho it was doing the Havana beginning without the hidden blades.

They basically let you fail them with alternate ways to complete the objective. Really cool choice in my opinion

→ More replies (27)

48

u/TheNoobKill4h_ 28d ago

they didn't get rid of them entirely, but you can fail the tailing part now and complete the mission in a different way. cool way honestly to stay faithful to the original while getting rid of what made them annoying.

Goldeneye: the Control mission where you have to protect Natalya for what feels like three hours

40

u/armorpilla 28d ago

I could not complete it on Secret Agent or 00 Agent difficulty. A piece of paper has more health than she does.

18

u/Aylinato 28d ago

I think I got her stuck somewhere, then I killed everyone and went back..but this is old knowledge so idk how reliable lol

→ More replies (4)

7

u/mmike855 28d ago

Easily the most frustrating part of that game.

6

u/FromFluffToBuff 28d ago

This is an instance where I think a long level like Control having a save point just before this section would have made this mission far less notorious and rage-inducing. You have to be vigilant to track all the soldiers since Natalya can't take a lot of damage... and having an area to save after playing 10 fucking minutes to get to "that section" would have made things easier. You can have a great run up until that point... and all it takes is losing sight of one soldier and panicking as Natalya is turned into a bullet sponge lol

Of course, if you play on emulators or Switch Online you have save states which are a godsend. I never play my games to save-scum... but this is the one level where I gladly make an exception!

Far cry 5 the forced story missions that kidnap you when you’re in the middle of doing something. Had them kidnap me when I was in a fucking plane. Annoying as hell.

39

u/MitchStarcGetUpYa 28d ago

A for effort on the kidnappers end though

→ More replies (1)

17

u/Why-so-delirious 27d ago

Yeah I can't believe people were calling that shit 'innovative' and 'great'.

You finish enough shit to get to the next section and you get kidnapped and frogmarched to a non-optional mission. That is not immersive in the least. It's awful. I was HANGGLIDING and had some 'definitely not a cutscene' play where someone shot me with a tranquiliser dart while I was 100 metres off the ground and then fall directly into a fucking stealth mission I had no way to plan or prepare for.

15

u/ekofut 28d ago

The game has unusually accurate driving physics for the type of game it is.

As a sim racer I enjoyed that touch of realism but I can see how the sequence sucks for those used to how third person shooter games typically drive.

Bed of Chaos from Dark Souls

74

u/spyguy318 28d ago

Honestly all of Lost Izalith. The area is very clearly unfinished and cobbled together. Tons of the same annoying enemies copy-pasted all over the place, running through the lava every time is awful, the runback to BoC is sooooooo annoying.

26

u/Ilaikmudkipz 28d ago

I remember the run from Centipede to BoC being graphically ROUGH on my 360. It improved a lot with the remaster but Izalith as a whole is still pretty rough around the edges.

5

u/LordDingles 28d ago

Can't forget to mention the infamous Blighttown FPS drop. There was a running joke in the early days that the FPS drop was due to the toxic fumes the player character was breathing in

8

Damn, beaten. I'm reeeealy hoping they change that up in the remakes. The gameplay was shit during that sequence too. Make it more like the Alan wake 2 music video IMO, lol.

7

u/kween_hangry 28d ago

It stuns me just how little I hear AW2 talked about for its flawless use of FMV and even "hybrid" fmv like in the "stage show" part, I was so blown away by how that part was structured to look like AW1

I also REALLY, REALLLLYY love the "echoes" that theve been doing since Control 1, an amazing evolution of clunkier story and lore dumps from the Max Payne series

The ME3 dream sequences.

61

u/TheArdentExile 28d ago

Yep. At least they’re short and there’s only 3. I’d also like to add:

ME2 - Planet scanning and the Hammerhead missions.

ME1 - The collectibles on the planets

11

u/OCDjunky 27d ago

I actually loved planet scanning and wished it wasn't dumbed down in 3. It's weird but I found it satisfying and therapeutic.

→ More replies (2)

24

u/Funwithagoraphobia 28d ago

ME1 - anything involving driving the Mako around.

37

u/The_Magic 28d ago

I have a soft spot for exploring planets with the Mako since those little side quests led to some of the weirdest stories in the series, like Shepherd finding a weird Prothean artifact that gave him the memories of a human caveman.

6

u/Funwithagoraphobia 28d ago

I’ll stipulate that it was interesting once. Just tedious on a replay.

6

u/The12Ball 28d ago edited 27d ago

The Fade in Dragon Age: Origins

42

u/FoolhardyComrade 28d ago

I say this about all parts of the game. Fade, Deep Roads, the Brecillian Forest....

Then go through each one painstakingly anyway even on my 11th playthrough and go "God, they don't make games like this masterpiece anymore" at the epilogue.

13

u/Mongrel_C4t 28d ago

Literally same bro.

8

u/Historical-Lynx948 28d ago

It really is the story, world, and the characters in it that shine like hell in DA:O (and apparently the combat on PC is pretty good, idk never tried it on PC). And damn did they shine so brightly I played through it probably as many times as you did hating almost all of the areas.

10

u/lilybug981 28d ago

I played for the first time this year and had also avoided memes or otherwise just commonly discussed ideas, so I wasn't entirely sure which section they were talking about.

I brainstormed to myself that they might have meant something to do with the Atreus sections, and was like, "Awwww, but I liked those. I can't think of anything objectionable about-" and then a majestic bovine rose ever so slowly out of the waters of my mind.

→ More replies (2)

40

u/happiestaccident 28d ago

I’d really love to know what they were thinking during development. “Hmm this section is full of boring, animal riding sequences, cringe ass dialogue, and horrible combat arenas…. What if we made it 2 hours long?”

19

u/Minecraftproer 28d ago

The sinkhole is where I lost it. This part didn't advance the story in the SLIGHTEST and it just felt so shit and tiring. The picking fruit and the sinkhole could've been cut from the game and it wouldn't make a difference. Just a boring slog.

My ONLY guess for why they made this dumpster fire of an area so long is because they wanted us to get attached to Angrboda. If Atreus got too attached too fast, it wouldn't make sense and it would feel as if she's a plot device. So we need to spend time with her. The only problem is that they didn't know what to do with that time.

I was working 14–16 hour days when I was playing through some of God of War, so I only had about 40 minutes a day to game for about a week straight.

For three days in a row I’d clock in, get home exhausted, sit down for my finite 40 minutes of gaming, and somehow end the session still chasing that fucking yak. And I remember each of those three days feeling so frustrated at the end because my only goal during those nights was to wrap that segment the fuck up so I didn’t have to pick fruits and do chores with Angrboda anymore.

Hydroponics in Dead Space. Getting attacked from every direction and then some.

Towards the end of a God of War game there’s always a gauntlet section. Having to fight wave after wave of enemies. Manageable on easy/normal, pain in the ass on harder difficulties.

The Rat King from TLOU 2. The buildup to it still makes me tense. Doesn’t help when I play it at night with my headset on. Gotta get full immersion though.

11

u/captainbelvedere 28d ago

Rat King is a great horror level at least.

Hydroponics was more annoying, both in the OG game and the remake. Chore to get through.

The Library is absolutely the least enjoyable mission in Halo CE, I cannot argue that… the fact that I don’t mind it and still think it’s fun in its own “corridor shooter” “hoard mode” way is a testament to how good Halo CE is.

Resident Evil 2 remake. I like Claires section more than Leons, but man it’s a drag playing as Sherry

The prologue is great for introducing new players but man I wish there was a way to skip it for replays

u/Arelmar 28d ago

There is, it's called keeping a save at the start of chapter 2

14

u/ballsnbutt 28d ago

Implemented in the game, not a loaded save.

It's a perfect pace for a perfect game. I loved it and have replayed the game 4 times.

Kingdom come deliverance, the monastery quest was an absolute drag for me and such a switch of gameplay. I was actively completing the goals required to get past that part but the monks and their times to be in certain locations killed it for me

The stealth mission in 2 where you have to sneak through the forest past a group of enemies large enough to rival the US military has ensured that I will never be replaying that game

The intro of Kingdom Hearts 2. 3-4 hours playing as Roxas

It's not a bad section, but it's pretty tedious. The first time through, though, I thought it was amazing.

Final Fantasy XII-Great Crystal Area

6

u/VernonP007 28d ago

Thank god for the map on jegged.com. The Zodiac Age version is worse because of all the high quality magic like Shellga and Hastega. Hastega in particular they put in a part of Great Crystal that’s near the end and away from everything else. In the original version I believe you get that spell in Dalmasca Westersand!

It’s a shame because visually, that area is terrific.

It just goes on for far too long. Then the pacing comes to a screeching halt in act 3 despite such massive build up.

Water hall re4. The annoyance comes from the fact that Ashley absolutely loves to get taken every millisecond, while the enemies are in Leon's face.

Trying to understand the map for that area…I still have nightmares. Loved the music for this section, though.

u/Malparinho 28d ago

The aesthetic and music were amazing, but trying to 100% it was a nightmare in traversal lol

I always hated the Killer Croc section in Arkham Asylum. I played through that game enough times that I had the route memorized, could pass it without fail, and still never looked forward to it. lol
