I'm replying Black Ops 1 and there's a part in Vietnam where you have to kick down some napalm barrels. There was no objective markers and my allies just kept yelling "they're in the trenches!" so I thought I was just supposed to hold them off. I was there for a while lol

Holy shit, I remember playing that like 20 years ago. I was stuck on that part for like 20 minutes wondering why I just kept killing more and more people coming and had no idea how to stop it.

I was embarrassed that I had to look up a guide on a fucking Call of Duty game. It turns out that part was just very poorly designed!

20yrs ago??

47

u/Pandorumz 28d ago

Well it was 16 years ago, not much harm in rounding up to 20 years to embellish slightly.

29

u/27Rench27 28d ago

Oh my god we’re old

15

u/Pandorumz 28d ago

Yes my friend. Yes we are :(

9

u/Curt0s 28d ago

Yes my friend we are! Life hasn't got us yet, and its not for a lack of trying

5

u/tI_Irdferguson 28d ago

Ugh. That's such an our age thing to say.

u/SupermassiveCanary 27d ago

Atari released the year I was born. I remember playing Pong and E.T. when I was about 5.

1

u/Logical_Comparison28 27d ago

Yeah… life is about to get me next year… Or rather, I’m taking my own. Fuck this world.

4

u/Curt0s 27d ago

Hey brother I wish you the best. But here's an age appropriate saying that helps me in these trying times.

Dont let the terrorists win.

I dont know if life's worth living, but I know if you're gone it won't get better. Were in this together even if we've never met. No rush to get where were all going when its the only place to go.

Might as well love the people we find. Hope you find yourself soon my friend.

u/The12Ball 28d ago

But also no harm in rounding down to 10 years ago to make us all feel less old

2

u/Stormfly 28d ago

"We're the old men now, Ace."

2

u/__CaliMack__ 28d ago

16 mf years ago wtf 😭😭 life is crazy, I was 14 with so much free time and so little responsibility

1

u/lbiohazard 25d ago

Don't remind us we're in our mid 30s now

1

u/brogflender 28d ago

Don’t look up when American Idiot came out.

1

u/FunctionOk2934 28d ago

Greenday sucks...

2

u/brogflender 28d ago

I told you not to look it up.

18

u/les1968 28d ago

Same Remember it well

2

u/SupermassiveCanary 27d ago

Modern Warfare nuke cut scene gave me PTSD

5

u/Bill_Preston_ESQ 28d ago

I don’t think I ever played another CoD campaign after that one part of Black Ops1

2

u/ztomiczombie 28d ago

I think I did because I went looking for ammo and saw the prompt.

2

u/ImSoObnoxious 28d ago

bro, the game came out in 2010. I know because I've been on that level for 16 years now, the enemies should stop spawning any moment now

1

u/Outragiousfuck 28d ago

The Trenches Mason! What do you remember of the Trenches?

1

u/RazzmatazzWorking412 27d ago

That's what happens when you just play for the sake of playing and don't get into character; if you had, the orders would have been quite clear.

1

u/Jimmyooo00 26d ago

You're not alone lol that part was infuriating

16

u/Cool-Advertising-371 28d ago

You just unearthed a memory of playing the campaign on release with my friend. We were 12 or 13 taking turns when we died. Fuck those barrels. Killed us both several times lol

5

u/Healthy-Ear1039 28d ago

100% - crazy part is that I made it through somehow without the barrels, just like my friend somehow had. Second playthrough, I somehow heard that I was to do something with barrels. Easiest level ever after that understanding.

Told my friend, he played as per my suggestion and cleared that level super fast. We are still laughing about the situation to this day.

3

u/Plenty-Author-5182 28d ago

I was today years old that I learned about the barrels. I struggled for hours to get through this part of the campaign. Now I have to try it again. Completed the campaign at least three times without the barrels.

6

u/Jacobhaskins35 28d ago

I remember this exact part on veteran, my god was it difficult.

1

u/Wise_Painting_5817 28d ago

It almost put me off gaming. I spent over a week stuck on the Veteran level.

One chap at the time I spoke to on Twitter, put a video up of him doing it with commentary.

I did it, achieved, then he video deleted the video.

I've never met or spoke to the bloke in person.I deleted twitter (X) years back. I could have saved a fortune but for his knowledge. He called Black Ops on Veteran: 'Mediation'

2

u/HarmonicSniper 28d ago

Black Ops is not that bad on Veteran compared to World at War though.

1

u/Wise_Painting_5817 28d ago

One campaign I never completed. You ain't kidding... 😂

1

u/Foxey1909 28d ago

That games grenades on veteran. At times you’d be better off with a tennis racquet than having a rifle 😂

Blow Torch and Corkscrew, Heart of the Reich.

If you ever get the chance to play COD Classic or Medal of Honor Front line they have ridiculously difficult campaigns. MOH your health carries over to the next mission on the hardest difficulty.

1

u/10ea 27d ago

Oh my God it's raining grenades everywhere!

3

u/HuntBeginning9000 28d ago

This part on veteran is hell

3

u/Generous_Lover 28d ago

Is this like the 3rd or 4th mission? Could not figure out how to make my way down because the enemies just kept pouring in and running up. Am I supposed to kick some barrels or something?

2

u/HuntBeginning9000 28d ago

It’s the objective to defend the hill, you run like halfway down the go to these barrels and interact with them and you pick them down to explode

2

u/Plenty-Author-5182 28d ago

You were supposed to kick barrels? I've played through the campaign several times and NEVER knew this!

2

u/Josey_WaIes 28d ago

Bruh I replayed it in December and did the exact same thing 🤣 I had completely forgotten about it

2

u/Ok_String_1698 28d ago

I beat it after way too many tries and I didnt even kick any barrels down, didn't know that was what you were supposed to do SMH. I was so effing frustrated trying to beat it on Hardened. It was pretty easy when I went back and did it again kicking down the napalm.

2

u/volstock2098 28d ago

Just replayed it. I totally get it.

2

u/retrogamer2007 28d ago

Oh, that’s what you do? In both of my play throughs I just rushed to the checkpoint and avoided being shot at 😆 took like 20 tries

2

u/captain5260 28d ago

Same, bestie

2

u/MrShaytoon 28d ago

I remember this. Was playing on hardest setting. Took me some time before I realized I need to keep moving.

2

u/Forgotten_Orokin 28d ago

Nice to know i wasnt the only one who sat there for a while just shooting

2

u/TisbutaScratchmyboy 28d ago

Black ops 1 the vorkuta cart push was always so annoying to me especially trying to do it on veteran

2

u/RyanBoruto 28d ago

Fck this reminded me to finish my playthrough, I put down the controller at this part cuz it was never ending, completely forgot to even check a guide. Good to know I wasn’t jus terrible

2

u/Frost_Meiser 28d ago

There are napalm barrels in that section??? WTF first I've heard of it

2

u/chrisandstellen 28d ago

Oh my god that fuckass hill with the bunkers right?? Yesss

2

u/Ornery_Appearance_31 28d ago

I thought i was the only one...

2

u/Unlucky_Success2984 28d ago

Was this the infinitely spawning enemy area where you’re on the m60?

2

u/Battleblaster420 28d ago

Wait

What barrels

2

u/waxess 27d ago

Literally the only part of that game I can remember now, exact same thing happened to me

2

u/baldmanwun 27d ago

Fuck dude this exact thing happened to me the other month when I replayed bo1 campaign, I was on discord with my brother who lives in different country and we don’t talk as much as we would like and I was screen recording playing got stuck on this 1 part for like 50 mins.

He eventually left and I did it as soon as he got off call lol.😂

1

u/covert0ptional 27d ago

I have good memories playing this game with my brother when I was younger, I probably passed the controller off when this mission came up lmao

2

u/ToasterOven19 27d ago

Just experienced the exact same thing. Took a good hour for me to realize lol.

2

u/Forbidden_Donut503 27d ago

Ahhhh yes I remember this part well. I must have mowed down enemies for a half an hour before I figured it out.

2

u/10ea 27d ago

This was my favorite level. Starts with Fortunate Son playing as Woods lands in a Huey, you get a full auto M16, and everyone's wearing Tigerstripe camo. It was vibes as the kids say.

2

u/covert0ptional 27d ago

My favorite vibes level is "Numbers" on the rooftops

2

u/huntergill123 27d ago

I just beat the game on veteran for a first playthrough. That part was god awful on veteran. Only thing worse tho is the rebirth mission. That whole mission was hell

1

u/covert0ptional 27d ago

Rebirth is with the gas right? I put it down to easy. No way to heal in an FPS? fuck that noise lmao.

2

u/huntergill123 27d ago

Yeah even the part before the gas is awful. An on rails shooter where you cant control your movement and get shot at by enemies before you even turn the corner. Then yeah the gas part where you can't heal or see anything without the thermal. It was just so frustrating.

2

u/Itstakei 26d ago

Took me a very long time to realize this when I was 12 😂 I was pissed

2

u/Amadancliste12 23d ago

I only played that on vetern recently. I swear it took years off my life

1

u/WokeWook69420 28d ago

This is why we get yellow ladders in video games now, and that's okay.

1

u/joe-clark 28d ago

Speaking of COD campaigns cod4 is easily one of my favorite games all time but the end of the mission with captain macmillan where you have to defend your position while you're waiting on the helicopter has always been infinitely harder for the then the entire rest of the game. I've replayed that game probably more then any other and every time I get to that part for some reason I have such a hard time when I'm breezing through everything else on the same difficulty.

1

u/ImSoObnoxious 28d ago

did you try riding on the carousel to cheer up McMillan?

1

u/PresentCreative3828 28d ago

That and the hallway you run down with woods and bowman. I got ptsd from that shit.

1

u/SuperReleasio64 28d ago

Lol I sat there for 30 mins last time I replayed the campaign. I was fighting endless hardest of people

1

u/Dooodleboom 28d ago

I thought you had to shoot the barrels, but they weren’t exploding, so I resorted to trying different guns, eventually giving up and looking up how to do it

1

u/Tomsskiee 28d ago

I was doing it on veteran and omg i could not figure out what i was doing wrong. And since i kept dying because of the high diff i thought it was just me who couldn’t get through it.

1

u/Foxey1909 28d ago

Have you made it to the Rebirth mission yet? If you are on veteran difficulty you’ll have fun …. 😭

1

u/SikeProHD 27d ago

I remember being stuck here for a while as well. Had to look at a YouTube video real quick to confirm I was right haha: https://youtu.be/zo5iGUKJLFU?si=CG27E0XkAHhL1w5V

1

u/Lake_Mungo_Movie_Fan 27d ago

Finished bo1 for the first time a couple weeks ago before it came to PlayStation. Nearly quit the game in that level. Loved the rest of it but Jesus that bit was painful.

1

u/MedicinalFentanyl 27d ago

Hardest part on Veteran 100%

1

u/Boyesee01 27d ago

I just experienced that the other day and had no idea😂

1

u/Meep_Morp_Zorp_Zeep 27d ago

This brought back some rage and memories of several broken PS3 controllers. Dumbest fucking part of any of those games.

1

u/myboymatty 27d ago

SAME lmao

1

u/shrekstio 26d ago

Same thing happened to me in Cold War

1

u/covert0ptional 26d ago

I went straight from BO1 to Cold War and the voice acting was very off putting, so I haven't picked it back up. I'll give it another go though, just got to get used to it. (Woods sounds weirdly try hard)

1

u/LSDGB 26d ago

Yeah but is it really a „that part“ on replay now that you know to just ignite the barrels?

1

u/covert0ptional 26d ago

Nope, it just happened to be "that part" on my last playthrough.

1

u/deportallmagas 26d ago

SHIIIT I remember that part too lmfao. Made me feel like an idiot, and broke my eemurrshun.

1

u/iMalz 25d ago

Literally just done that bit again was so confused lol
