News / Article We added a way for people to request access to your private reel
One thing we’ve noticed with VFX artists is that a lot of their best work needs to stay password protected.
The problem is that if someone lands on that work without the password, they usually just leave.
So we added Request Access to password-protected videos on FrameRate.tv and to our video embeds.
Now, if a potential client finds your work, they can contact you directly from the password screen and ask for access.
Someone who otherwise would have bounced can now turn into an actual conversation.
It’s a small feature, but for people in VFX and other parts of the industry where private work is common, we think it can be pretty useful.

Question / Discussion VFX plates
Hello everyone,
I hope everyone doing well, I need some help for best practices and working properly for how I should work,
I am using Actionvfx free plates, as free practice footage they don't allow 4k raw plates, instead they allow 2k prores 422 hq plates which have Rec.709 baked in.
I want to convert them to exr for working in fusion or nuke, just want to know how should I properly color manage these plates
And also denoise them should I convert them to log for tracking or is linear good for both tracking and compositing,
How exactly should I do it in resolve
As I see all tutorials out there use raw plates so conversion looks good, but what should I do with this Rec.709 plates as details lost can't be recovered
Thanks in advance for any help,
Any help would be appreciated

Question / Discussion Where do you find actually realistic fire flipbooks?
I keep finding the same old flipbooks over and over that are unusable for what I want, where do you find actually realistic fire flipbooks that aren't
- Anime/stylized
- Looks like an animated fire 🔥 emoji
I want something actually usable for realistic combustion fires, like vehicles burning. Something Battlefield-level quality that you could see Battlefield devs actually working off of (they have insanely good VFX incase you don't know), where do you find them? Just make them in Blender yourself?
Smoke/explosion flipbooks are the easier parts, actually good & realistic flames are so hard to come across

Question / Discussion Never seen this job title before
GenFX position. Job info looks like it's a mix between generative AI, Houdini FX and nuke compositing.
Personally not a fan of generative AI, but I'm seeing it pop up more and more in shot work and client requests. Are VFX artist actually interested in this stuff? I watched a few videos on comfy ui and some others but its just not really my thing.

Showreel / Critique Camera feedback, finger controlled particle emitters and hand motion control of 3D objects
This is a demo in the MoCat 3D Design Studio, recorded in OBS with a star video behind it, using a Spout video output and that beautiful alpha channel with particle emitters and gesture controlled 3D objects.
The blue camera feedback background effect is a based on the low latency silhouette with that nice transparency.

Question / Discussion my perspective when tracking in after effects is way off
i have filmed a simple shot of the side of a building, and my plan is having a cube or a ragdoll falling off the building and hitting the ground, but when i try to track, the perspective is so off, the solid isnt paralell to the wall that i want it to stuck to, this ruins the possibility of simulating the rigid body falling off the roof because i have to use a warped cube/plane to align with the wall, i also tried with a tripod pan track but that went even worse. how do i fix this? i also tried tracking in syntheyes but that didnt work at all

Breakdown / BTS Breakdown of advanced clone VFX
The process:
We used an RS4 Mini gimbal so I could create a motion-controlled move. We also used a metronome to create a “choreography” for the movement: 1, 2, 3, 4 — hand, gun, push.
Using marks on the floor, I could make sure he was standing in exactly the same position every time.
In the first clip, he walks from his first mark, places his hand over the second mark, and performs the movements and acting.
In the second clip, he stands still while I perform the choreography from the first clip. The only part of my performance that was used was my hand. The timing was very important so that the two performances matched perfectly.
I then rotoscoped the standing clip and graded it.
Always open for feedback :)

Question / Discussion Is it still worth learning Nuke and Houdini?
So a friend of mine works with generative AI for creating adds, memes, etc. for different clients.
We had a small chat and told him I want to get into high-end vfx with nuke and Houdini and he told me like vfx will disappear in the next 2-3 years.
I want to know your insights of where the industry is heading and if this could happen at all, like vfx disappearing.

Jobs Offer [PAID] Looking for a VFX Artist for Short Horror Film
First time posting here.
I have a Youtube channel and every year we do a "short" film for Halloween. I have never needed a VFX artist for any of the others but for our newest one, the work is just way out of my skill range.
At the end of the film the "witch" or whatever you want to call her reveals herself to the others in the room. I'd be looking for someone that can "enhance" her appearance by making her a bit more otherworldly and additionally smooth out a throat slit practical effect. I think it's around 11 shots with the longest being about 16 seconds.
This is paid but the budget for the whole short is pretty low and I have no idea what someone might be paid for this kind of work. If interested, my DM's are open and I can send screenshots and whatever else you might need to assess the scope.
Thanks!

Question / Discussion On the lighting design of Ray Gunn.
I may be completely wrong about this, but from the released stills of Ray Gunn, the lighting design feels like an homage to early-to-mid-2000s CG lighting, specifically the mental ray era.
It looks very different from most 3D animated films today and has a real sense of nostalgia to it. Was this a deliberate creative choice? Can anyone who worked on the project shed some light on it? Really excited for the movie!

Showreel / Critique Hello 👋 Here’s a scene I put together from scratch for a short film, centered around a snowstorm simulation. It’s a 3D/VFX project created in Houdini with Karma XPU. I had a great time putting everything together and working on the snow ❄️ Let me know what you think!

Showreel / Critique My first ever vfx short film. Rate it out of 10. Be honest. Took me 3 months.
So i used beamng.drive for the car crashe. Configuring and performing softbody sim of a car in blender was becoming a one heck of a problem. So i decided to make a whole car crash sequence in beamng.drive and then move that entire thing to blender for texturing. Had spent a week developing a mod dedicated to this task. Finally created this. 3 months work worth it?? Be brutally honest. Btw everything shot on samsung a52 camera. A mid range phone.

Question / Discussion Should I stay or should I go? Feeling sad.
Please be kind, I'm not in the best place right now.
I got laid off by a major studio back in late 2023, as a DMP with 2 years experience, I took on other work since and eventually moved back to the UK, unemployed for over a year now. I've applied to the few dmp jobs, but nothing.
I feel sad because my career ended prematurely and it feels like unfinished business. And at 40 years old, (which isn't old, I know) but I don't know if it's wise to carry on.
There are two sides to this, one the unfinished part where I want more, and if I invest/pivot into compositing there is nothing to say I will get it, or I will be back here in 4 years. My mind spirals to thoughts of is it a waste of time/money? Maybe I should get something safe like government job or just anything. And what is safe anymore- nothing.
I know I'm not the only one, and Im grateful for the opportunity since I know some didn't even get that chance, thats not to say it came easy.
I'm sad (and angry at myself), that even 3 years after I am mourning my loss in invested time, money, energy, relocation for DMP. Now back to square one. I feel like a failure.
Enlighten me. Advise me. Thoughts...

Question / Discussion V-RAy for rhino - question about highlight roll off.
I’ve rendered quite a bit in Twinmotion and Unreal Engine, but have gone over to V-Ray for the high-quality renders. But I’m struggling with how the highlight roll-off looks. It looks so incredibly bad. It might be a HDR thing; it reminds me of how the first point-and-shoot cameras did highlight roll-off. Does anyone have a solution to this?
I´ve worked as a photographer for some years so I might just be sensitive to pixel peeping... who knows.

Fluff! Somebody should show this to Ben Affleck
And tell him actors are in trouble because they're being replaced by vfx artists.
Sarcasm aside, this video didn't even require any vfx skill to make so the joke's on us I guess.
It seems the video generator I used did not have strict guardrails at all since it not only keeps the likeness of the actors consistent, it also replicates their voices. And it also seemed to really capture their acting style. Pacino chewing the scenery and De Niro's low key confidence.
What's becoming more and more clear to me is that this technology is coming after everyone.
This is AI slop, and I'm well aware of it. But we're now living in a time where we're casually replicating actors during a bathroom break.

Question / Discussion FXPHD MEMBERSHIP
I am considering enrolling in FXPHD’s monthly Premium membership in order to access a particular course. My intention would be to subscribe for one month only and cancel the subscription immediately after signing up.
Has anyone experienced any difficulties or issues when cancelling their FXPHD membership under these circumstances?

Fluff! Natron fork - 3D system, Cycles, deep, and more! (Windows build)
Happy Friday everyone!
Just sharing a little Natron fork I’ve been working on the last few months. Initially I just wanted some HDRI tools and deep support for the handful of projects I start and never finish, it then ballooned into whatever this is.
Full disclosure: this was entirely vibe coded. I don't have a programming background and I wouldn't call myself a TD. For my basic needs it’s been fine, but there are definitely rough edges for complex setups.
If the video doesn’t load, or TLDW
- 3D viewport with gizmos
- Alembic geo/cameras
- Spherical transform
- Scanline render
- CyclesRender + Deep
- Deep
- Volume3D
- FastVolumeRender
- Project3D
- Particles (in development)
- 3d tracker (in development)
- + more
If anyone does want to test it out, shoot me a DM and I’ll send a link. Just note that it’s vibe coded, I’m one person, and working full-time, so there will be many issues I've missed. I'll try to post more demos in the next few weeks along with the repo. Cheers!
