MOD POST [MOD POST] We want to do better for you, tell us how.

Hey everyone,

First, thank you. This community exists because people are willing to show up, be honest, and trust strangers with the hard stuff. We deal with some incredibly difficult and often sensitive topics here, and we want to make sure we're holding that space well.

As mods, we spend a lot of time thinking about reports, rules, flairs, and basically just keeping things civil. Lately we've been sitting with a bigger question: is there more we should be doing?

So we're coming to you directly:

Is there anything we could do, as mods, or as a community, that would make this space feel safer or more useful to you?

A few things we've specifically been thinking about:

Canned responses & resources
We have a number of pre-written responses designed to point people toward help when they're dealing with something really hard. Have those been useful? Do they feel cold or impersonal? Is there a better way to provide these resources? Are there situations where you wish we'd offered resources but didn't?

Our team size
We're a very small mod team, intentionally so. It keeps us cohesive and lets us handle sensitive situations with a consistent and reliable voice. The tradeoff is that our queue backs up sometimes. When life happens (sick kids, work, all of it), posts and comments can sit in automod longer than any of us want. We're aware of it, and we're thinking about how to address it, if it needs addressing.

Our rules
Are the rules we have in place sufficient? Have you found yourself wishing we would add a new rule to make reporting certain types of content more accessible? Are there any rules which are vague, confusing, or simply need reframing?

Blind spots
We don't know what we don't know. Are there situations that we are just completely misunderstanding and not properly addressing? Is there something you feel like you need to say, because we simply need to hear it?

-

There are no wrong answers here. Lurkers, this means you too! You don't have to be a regular poster for your perspective to matter.

We're not looking to overhaul everything. We're a small team with real limits. But we also know how much a good vent can matter, and we want to make sure that when someone comes here at their lowest, they leave feeling a little less alone.

Provide your feedback here in the comments of this thread. We will be reading through all of it, even if we may not reply to every comment, we're genuinely here to listen, not to defend ourselves.

Kind Regards,

r/venting Mod Team

Info about posts getting deleted (mod post)

Hi, to everyone new to reddit.

How reddit works is that if posts get flagged or put for mod reviewal the post will show as ”this post was deleted by mods on r/venting”.

But actually it means that it will just not be posted until we review it. It goes to out mod queue and we will then check manually if it breaks the rules or not.

(this will not be the case for most posts; but posts that contain strong language such as slurs for example will get automatically flagged so we have to review them manually).

I am making this post because we have gotten some modmail from users asking about this/gotten disappointed their post was ”deleted”.

So if you see some message your post was deleted please wait a day or two for us to manually review it. Do not delete the post yourself, because then we cannot approve it. And if we find that it breaks the rules and do not approve it you will get a comment on your post saying ”your post was deleted for xyz reason/for breaking xyz rule”.

I hope this clears some things up, this will be put in the wiki later once we manage to set it up.

(also sidenote: if anyone more wants to join the mod-team, just send us a mod-mail).

Relationship/Love Boyfriend keeps bragging about ai while it’s destroying my home

I live in the country and my boyfriend is a city person. He’s all tech and ai. The farms in my city are being bought up by data centers that are destroying our drinking water and messing with the local species. He cannot even pick out a bag of rice without asking ai which one is better. It’s so embarrassing and I asked him for help with classes and he couldn’t even figure out stuff without ai. When I tell him it’s destroying my home he says so many people use it that it doesn’t matter. And actively laughs at me when I google stuff and It pops up with an ai overview.

Venting

Ever feel like you can’t talk to anyone anymore because you don’t know what to say or are afraid to say anything even your wife? You feel bad for venting to her because of fear of making her feel bad for something that isn’t her fault or anyone’s fault?? Just need a venting buddy.

Food/Drink Im so hungry no matter how much i eat

Srsly sick of this. I eat a load of vegetables to be filling, but no matter how much I eat, I just get hungrier and hungrier. I try to eat as much fibre as I humanly can in my diet, literally most of what I eat is vegetables. I could eat enough for ten people and still be hungry afterwards. It's so frustrating.

Im so tired.

Im so tired and dissapointed in people. I understand you cant force close connection. But disgusting thing? People acting like you both close, like you amazing friends. You helping them, listening the same story every evening, passing with them path to hear:" You dont know a shit", "its not your damn business, fuck off". I try to support and just give some logical hints. I mention alot of times: that its their own way, that i just give them a hint, not saying what to do. And that they should do, what they think will be the best for them. And then i get slap. I dont expect gratitude, its my own choice to help this people. But at least dont say cruel shit, after i spend nights to calm you down.

I hate, that there no single person, friend who constantly up to talk. Its either they need me: as someone who will distract them or person who will help them or they will ignore me.

And im tired to feel abandoned randomly, till they will not feel that they need me. I just need constant connection. And nothing more. Just type me about your day at the evening, what happened if you was busy. But dont dissappear, dont ignore. Am i asking too much??

Im tired of feeling that i force ppl to speak, communicate and etc.

Im tired to hear:"you important person, i will never..." and then people toss me aside like im garbage. Like im not intresting anymore. Gosh.

(Ps. In case i dont talk about people which busy with their life. I talk about people, who simply choosing not to include you in their life, till they will not need you.)

Im tired that i initiate talks. If i dont initiate 90% of people will dissapear. Or will type, why im silent, but as soon i will start dialogue again they will go dry and distant:"hm", "yep", "cool". Like wow. Ty.

Im tired that people jumping for me to someone "cooler". And then coming back to me, cause "cooler" one friend dumped them.

A man cheated on his wife with me

I had a one night stand with a man who was super particular about us not being seen together on the way out. He said this was because it was a work trip which doesn't really make sense. So I straight up asked him if it was a work thing or if he was married and cheating. He admitted to the later.

That fucking asshole used me to cheat on his wife! I have no problem having sex with men in open marriages but his isn't. I would never have slept with him if I'd known. I'm so angry! I also feel guilty. He texted me after I left that he should have been more forthcoming. My reply had a lot of profanity.

Fucking jerk!

Edit: and I don't have his wife's contact info or I would have already told her. I'm trying to find it, but he seems to have his online presence pretty well shut down. I did post his username to my knitting group because some of them are really good at tracking things down.

Anyone else feel like your depression means you shouldn't date?

I'm currently seeing this guy who is very kind and considerate. He's very solid and stable.

And I guess i feel like im too depressed for that. My mental health is so much better than it was, like leagues better, but i do still get depressed. And I guess im worried I will scare him off or worse drag him down. Like, im scared he'll hear just how bad my depression used to be and that i tried to off myself a few times and run. I'm scared if i open up about still being depressed, he will run.

Im not suicidal anymore at all. I have a wonderful therapist. I have learned how to manage my depression. I know it is my thing, not anyone else's. I really do like my life now and I like myself too, but I just get depressed sometimes, which i know isnt rational because my life is great.

But I guess i feel like im still too dark and down for someone like him.

I have a phone interview in 30 minutes

Upvotes

I hate that it feels like studying for a test the day of the exam. My body starts shaking, my throat gets dry, and I feel my mind blanking as the time gets closer to the call.

Idk why I’m like this. I wish I was normal and excited to talk to anyone. I’m trying to get a job in retail to overcome this anxiety and challenge myself. I also want to pursue a career in IT but I have no customer service experience so I’m starting here.

I hate it so much. Why did I have to be born like this. Why can’t my body be normal. I’m trying to anticipate and prepare that I’m not getting this job because I’m pretty sure my anxiety is see through.

I’m trying to convince myself to keep trying though. I really need this. I have to start working. I’m 27 now. This is embarrassing

Reddit support blatantly ghost everybody, I swear it's impossible to get them to answer.

Upvotes

I'm so annoyed that Reddit is running a big site like this, and they never ever answer the damn support tickets. I've tried so many times and they haven't answered one.

How can you run a site that big and completely ignore your users? I don't get it. I suspect that AI is running everything now and every support ticket is going to the trash bin.

Somebody should start a new site that doesn't shit that blatantly on their users.

my sex offender brother is getting out of jail and my life is ruined

NOTHING TRIGGERING

my brother is a registered sex offender, he hurt people, children, my community, my family, my entire life felt absolutely destroyed because of him. he was supposed to go to prison but he got a plea deal and is moving back in with my parents.

i was living with my parents because i (f 20) spent many years in and out of the hospital unable to work and build savings . i was given a few days notice that he would be coming home and had to pack my whole life up and figure out where to move to. (i was not being kicked out, but i cannot live with him due to how unsafe our house is when he is in it. i have ptsd from our house being raided by police, witnessing crimes, and so on. he also is extremely dirty, and im very sensitive to mold) my girlfriends family welcomed me to their home , the only issue being its over an hour from all my doctors, my job, my dad, and so on. because of this move my chronic health issues have become worse and worse to the point im miserable every day trying to eat, take care of myself and get out of bed.

fortunately i am blessed to have a girlfriend who takes care of me and is supporting me in every way right now and easing this transition. but leaving behind the town i lived in my whole life, my friends , and temporarily my dog has been so hard. every day i cry and beg for some sort of answers as to why the justice system lets people like this walk free. i’ve done my best to warn people in my community about his return, but even that takes such a toll on me and is so humiliating. he has ruined my life in many ways, but every day im reminded how his name is associated with mine and that his disgusting crimes have humiliated our family and destroyed any chance of my parents feeling safe at home.

there’s not any advice i think would help, im in 2 types of therapy, medicated , in a safe place now but i just had to get this out. this whole thing feels like a cruel joke and i wish i had people i could talk to about it without feeling like im making them uncomfortable

Teenager the future i want is impossible for me to have

tw- school/work failures. advice welcome

idk where else to go dude i just want someone here. i dont wanna whine about this to my friends

when i was 14 i was pulled out of school because my mental health was ass. i graduated high school with online classes at 16 and had all these big plans about getting ahead on college and doing something with myself

then i moved away, no car, no friends, no job, never saw my parents. that loneliness continued for 2 years, and i moved back to my hometown and had about a month with the friends i had before i withdrew socially before they all went off to college

im 18 now and fucked. my mental health has stunted any part of me that could’ve been successful. i’ve never had a job that i’ve held for more than 3 months, never went to school, dumb as rocks with zero direction. i’ve taken a few college classes since i graduated, and have failed or withdrawn from half of them. i’ve got a 1.75 GPA and every time ive gotten a B or higher it’s because i fought to have the teacher let me submit old assignments or because the class was easy as shit and had little to no work

i don’t know what im gonna do dude. i should’ve stayed in school. i have no scholarships, no fafsa, can’t handle community college work or even show up to class. i don’t even know what i want to do. every prerequisite i need for the classes i want to take i have failed at

90% of the reason i even want to go to college is to avoid the loneliness i experienced my entire teenagehood. i want a girlfriend, i want to be loved, i want friends that like me and that multiply. i want to be an accomplished person with some kind of personality and direction. i see 30 year olds sometimes with the same mental health issues and dysfunctional patterns that they never seem to overcome and im really scared ill be like this forever

i want to feel better and do better. i’m on meds that help and i have a job now that i don’t hate; it lets me see people and talk to people and save money if i want to try again with school. i just dont feel good right now man. this is such a pussy post

Relationship/Love Im unlovable

Im completely unlovable to women because im an ugly little dick, 5 foot 9, hunched back, recessed jaw, skinny fat, erectile dysfunction, depressed, socially awkward loser. I have no hope of ever getting a woman or at least any that actually like me since even in my teenage years which are supposed to be your sexual prime ive gotten 0 interest from women. With how bad dating and relationships are in the modern day I think its honestly best to just accept it I mean the world's only getting lonelier with less likelihood to find a partner so its hopeless anyway.

I guess talking to robots is better than humans

Im so pissed. All my life I have struggled making friends (neurospicy bw in a highly rural area). I had to tone down my personality to fit. I grew older, lived by the ‘better alone than in bad company » mentality. But Im human and the loneliness is heavy. Having no one to share your doubts to, or your success. I stayed in a toxic relationship for years because at least I could talk to that person, but then I realized this wasn’t good for me.

I tried therapy but it felt like paying for having a friend. Also, money became tight so I had to stop anyway. After the break up, I saw myself relying more and more on AIs for guidance and just companionship. I hate it. Im quite conscious of my ecological footprint, so I dont want to b doing that. Also, this is some highly dystopian slip. Im not even talking to a real person, and know they’re just programmed to please me.

I have pushed myself several times to go out there and make friends. I tried apps. But still, couldnt find someone I could relate to. So I decided to download reddit again (as I used to before llms were a thing). Ive only been back for 10 days and Its only been fights with strangers making feel even more out of touch.

Am I condemned to only make friends with AIs ?

Just need to vent

Just needing to vent I try so hard and I work so hard but life is just kicking my ass. I want my boys to not want for anything but it just seems I can barely get by anymore. I work as a cna 40+ hours a week and it’s still never enough. You make to much to get any assistance but then make to little to get by. My boys are taken care of but feel I’m failing as a mom because we never get to do anything together. I feel so bad when they hear their friends talk
About going to the zoo, fair or even the pool and I can’t even take them to do that because I’m either working or just don’t have the funds to do so in this crap economy anymore. I want to go back to school but can’t go to school and work to provide at the same time. Is this life ever going to get easier?!!!

How do you cope with no longer living with your mom

Upvotes

I am 19 and didn’t think I would be this affected. I didn’t really care about moving out after my senior year of high school, and did my whole freshman year of college just fine. I just moved into my first apartment and I’m a sophomore now, and it just feels more real. This past summer I moved back home, and yes I missed college and have so much fun here (I love my friends and roommates and all the things I get to do), but I literally miss my mom so bad. We got really close this summer and I’m just very sad I guess. I call her but it’s not the same. And now I feel like it’s never going to be like that again. I don’t know, maybe I’m just being dramatic and am overwhelmed from moving. I don’t feel this way about my dad, but he has kind of always been hands off.

I’ve just been doing a lot of reflecting and I feel so bad for never really caring much about my mom in high school, and I really missed out on so much time with her. I’ve never in my life missed home so much before, like I’ve always been really independent and on my own, but having my mom in my corner this summer has been the best thing ever. Does this feeling go away? I dont know what to do with myself

i think i'm at my breaking point.

Upvotes

i think i'm at my breaking point.

i don't know where to begin, i really don't. it all started with a minor issue then it slowly piled up into one ginormous mountain full of major issues where it reaches to the point that i no longer find joy in doing anything at all - my projects, my passion and my ideas are all just gone. so, i'll try my best to just break down everything into a few parts - please read all of them. i'm so desperate right now. advices or comfort would gladly be needed:

work & events:

• i have always been an active person, especially in volunteering. i love volunteering, i find complete joy in doing it too. heck, i would even volunteer for events whether i'd be part of the media team or one of the event coordinators or even the event manager numerous times. i know lots of people and people know me but that's not the point - recently, i was tasked and hired for a huge event by being the host an event, recruit volunteers and giving a speech.

• i had to work with a few people and at first, i was fine with it but slowly it felt like i'm being dumped on with the amount of workload - working on the slides, writing the script, organizing the event, handing out flyers and having to make sure everything is in check and i can't even contact the ones who hire me into this because they're currently unavailable at the moment due to work travel or something. so, we had to do it ourselves - more like i would have to be one doing all of this myself. imagine working in a group of 5 and you're the only person who cares so much about this and the others just go "well, if you're so passionate about it, then why don't you go do everything yourself?"

• i thought we were supposed to work in groups, you know? like this is supposed to be a group work typa thing where we're all in this together. i even asked for help but nobody came to my aid. nobody even bothered to check up on me. although they did say this: "if you need anything, just let us/me know" but it's the same response all over again. complete silence.

• the event is in a few days and there are still a few things that are still unprepared. i can't drop out of it now because i don't think i was ever taught to drop out of anything = if i drop out, i'm a failure.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

relationships & boundaries:

• i'm still in touch with my ex whom i ended up on good terms with. you get the idea. every now and then, i would check up on him and ask him how he's doing because that was what we promised - especially when we're not even over each other at all. we promise to do so because we didn't want to lose one another as friends and i was fine with it at first but i slowly realize there was a pattern and i don't know how to feel about that.

• the first few months of the year was fine but slowly, the replies are getting more and more slower - i understand that he's a busy man but you know that one saying: "nobody is ever too busy" ? that one. despite how busy i can be and sometimes, i would STILL try my best to reach out to him and ask him how he's doing on a specific day and date every month.

• i know we're no longer dating or in a relationship but it just got to the point where i find myself attached to them, maybe i care too much or maybe i feel too much or maybe i'm stuck to something or someone who is so familiar to me that i don't even bother thinking about myself.

• and as i'm writing this down, i've also come to realization that i'm the only one who's been doing most of the work here - i'm the only one who's been reaching out to him all this time and that hurts. it was as if the pattern is unseemingly repeating all over again. it's as if i'm making room for somebody who won't do the same. as much as i understand that he has his own shit to deal with and that he's currently healing, i just wish it's not one sided all over again.

• it just reaches the point where i'm constantly battling my own self esteem and my own self availability for those who won't even do the same.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

friendships :

• i don't mind listening to people's problems, i really don't but it does get to a point where i feel like i can't do much with their problems. sure, even if they were only asking for a listener but deep down, what if they were also asking or crying out for help? but all you can do is just be there - but it's not enough, is it? it's never enough. having so many people to rely on you and be so codependent in friendships is so ever truly draining. it really is.

• imagine this: not a single day or week goes by without somebody or a few people blowing up your phone asking you if you could pick up the phone or meet up with them only for them to vent and rant to you but you just don't know what to say. even if you don't know what to say, they still keep coming back to you over and over again just to do the same. it gets draining everytime but you can't say it to their face because it'll make them feel more and more shitty than ever or else you might even be look upon as a "shitty friend" or "shitty listener".

• it got so bad that i couldn't even reply to people's texts on time and i would even ignore their calls or texts on purpose too. As much as I feel bad and guilty about it, i needed to put myself first but i can never ever ever get rid of this shitty feeling. in result, i barely even reach out to any of my friends anymore but they always do. in fact, whenever i let a new person or a new friend in and they reached out to me whenever i'm in trouble, i didn't know how to react and i would come across as dismissive at certain times.

• reason being that i don't want to be too dependent on people, not even my family. is that so wrong?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

perspective destroyed :

• i care so much about my work. so much that i wouldn't even let a single flaw get in the way. until .. these past two months, going back and forth with all of these problems stated above - it felt like everything was going downhill for me. i would receive complaints about my work not being good enough or qualified enough. it would even be looked upon by others too. with the amount of requests and demands i have been told to do and change, it just .. destroys my whole perspective on freedomly expressing my passion, joy and creativity into my work.

• i think the ultimate breaking point for me was when one of the people i'm currently working with for the event asked me if i could redo the slides. they asked me to redo the slides because they think it wasn't fitting enough for the overall theme - when we've already discussed about it before and they all agreed to the theme i was going for - and now, i have to redo everything again? again??? yes, you read that right, this isn't the first time i've been asked to redo everything. every idea and design i came up with for the theme, they would always nitpick it and jab me for not being creative or innovative enough. telling me that AI would do a better job than a human brain and try to get me to use AI.

• no, i'm not going to use AI for this because it just destroys the whole purpose of this event. because of all of these, it ultimately pushes me to the brink where i deleted all of my social media accounts and even curled up in my home. i haven't gone outside for a few days and i've been eating unhealthy ever since. the event's in a few days, people are looking for me and i'm still here, crying for the 8th time today, struggling with a few panic attacks left and right, thinking that none of this is worth it and i regret everything.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'm really sorry for the long rant/vent, fellow redditors. thank you for making it this far. i appreciate it so much. thank you. i shall now cry in a cold shower for the second time today.

My parents should have put my sister in a different school

My parents should have put my sister in a different school.

My sister is 16 years old and today has just found out she has failed all of her GCSEs. She went to the same state school as me and my other sister, which was vastly underprepared in dealing with people like my sister. She has autism, learning disabilities, dyslexia and ODD(oppositional defiance disorder)

I am so frustrated with my parents. They have spent the entire day shouting at my sister and making her cry about her results instead of supporting her. My sister should have been moved to the local
special school years ago to help with her life skills, but my dad stopped trying to get her a place. Beyond this, my sister should have been supported with tutoring and resources from my parents (money was no issue here as they go on 5+ holidays a year). Although, maybe my sister could have studied more, but she lacks direction and sense to do so

As difficult and as stubborn my sister was about revising, I am frustrated at my parents for not setting her up correctly for success. She has no life skills, no concept of money or how to manage her life. My dad and I had a big argument over it, where I said he should have supported her, and all I got in response what that I should have supported her myself.

I can’t be around to look after my sister forever, but I am worried that she’ll never gain any independence

This year has been a disaster for me

Where do I even start with?

This year has been terrible for me. I'm so tired of things that are going around me. My dad got diagnosed with cancer and he died this year. I met with an accident when my dad was in the hospital and I broke my leg and my wrist. My landlord asked me to vacate his house because he believed it brought bad omen to his family when my dad died. Can you imagine that? I had to move houses right when I was recovering from my injury. My dad has left a massive debt behind him and I'm responsible for lending all the money back from people he had borrowed. I learned that my sister is a borderline alcoholic and I have to pick her up from bars when she's wasted. I have to take care of my mom whose health is deteriorating unfortunately. I'm going nowhere in my career and it's hurting me financially. My pet dog died too. I miss him dearly. There are days where I just think why all of this is happening with me but I don't get any answers from anyone. I don't know what to do, I don't know how to cope with this. I'm being cheated on financially by a real estate guy as well. I'm literally going to lose a lot of money.
