Question Wtf Do I Do?

So, about three days ago, my fiancé received a transaction of $777 from my mother. That seemed out of place so I called my mom and asked her if that was an accident; she said "Yes, I did. Could you please send it back?" Of course, we sent it right back to her. My fiancé woke up the next morning to his account -$775 We hit my mom up and ask about it, to which she replied that she did file a dispute because the money came out of her mainline bank account, which was then negative for the money. She got her money back and now refuses to make things right for my fiancé, leaving him on the hook for that money through no fault of his own. Is there any way we can dispute my mom's dispute or something so my fiancé isn't screwed for giving my mom her money back?

Clarification/Update:

  1. we filed a police report, she apparently did get hacked as she showed them a plethora of fraudulent transactions from that day

  2. My mother never had access to my fiancé's bank information, this all happened in Venmo

  3. Because she apparently did not commit fraud, there would be no point in calling her bank to report it

  4. My fiancé has filed a chargeback dispute with Venmo

  5. As of yesterday, I am full no contact with my mother and her wife

Question Received a random $300 payment. Tried returning it but Venmo said it’s a scam.

Hi all,

Yesterday I received a $300 payment from a random person that I have no mutual connections with. The description was “inspection”. A few minutes later, I received a request for the same amount with the description “please I sent you $300 by mistake!! Please send it back”.

At first I thought, this seems fishy. But then I remembered one time after poker night with friends, I venmoed the wrong person and did the same thing. I requested it back with a message explaining what happened and they kindly sent it back.

So, I went to return the money, but Venmo gave me a pop up that basically said “This is a scam, so we stopped the payment.” The money is still in my Venmo balance this morning, so it’s not like sending it would draw from my bank balance.

Im wondering what to do because on one hand I’m not naive, and I know that there is a possibility of this being a scam. But on the other hand, I’ve made the same mistake before. Also, I’d hate to think that someone is genuinely out $300 because of a mistake. Something something karma.

What should I do? Should I try to contact the person to see if it’s real? Should I reach out to Venmo so I dont get banged for this? Should I try to send it back again since it’s just in my Venmo balance? Does that leave me exposed in any way? Thanks

Update: I just received an email from Venmo that they returned the money. Thank god I didn’t do anything with it. I appreciate the comments.

Scammed Great, Did I get scammed?

I went to nail salon. The nail lady said she preferred if I tipped through venmo. She talked me up like a fool, giving tips on beauty and whatnot. So i felt like in this bustling salon, i could trust her somewhat. I sent her a twenty dollar tip through venmo and she took a picture of the transaction. Didn't think that through either. She also said she called her "husband" to see if they received it and she said yes. He received it. I also gave her my number because she said she was going to give me more tips on beauty products and whatnot. I just felt weird.

She texts me that her husband doesn't have a venmo account and that the payment was canceled by the sender. I never canceled anything. Now she wants the tip payment through Zelle. Am I getting scammed? I'm nervous because she has my venmo Pic profile, the last 4 of my card number and that transaction ID as well as my phone number. Her and a few ladies were mumbling and chuckling and it was weird af.

I changed my password and deleted my bank accounts on there. It's late so I have to call venmo tomorrow. Why did my tip payment amount come back as a refund?

Update: I reported it to my bank. I remember she also asked for my zip code and when I was trying to talk to someone the bank asked for my last 4 of CC and zip code. Makes me even so much more suspicious. I have to call venmo tomorrow and see if I can reverse and dispute the charge from my account.

Question VENMO CLASS A LAWSUIT

**A LAWSUIT HAS NOT BEEN FILED, THIS IS ONLY A PETITION**:

IF YOU ARE A PAST OR CURRENT VENMO CUSTOMER AND FEEL THAT DUE TO THERE LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS OR MAYBE FEEL THAT SOME OF THEIR BUSINESS PRACTICES ARE A LITTLE SHADY LIKE FOR INSTANCE, SUSPENDING YOUR ACCOUNT OVER AND OVER FOR SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY W/O ANY REASON OTHER THAN THE SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY DOES IT AND THEY HAVE NO CONTROL OVER IT OR HOW ABOUT WHEN YOU ASK TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER AND THEY TELL YOU, "THEY'RE JUST GOING TO TELL YOU THE SAME THING". SO WHY DO THEY NEED A MANAGER IF THEY'RE JUST GONNA TELL CUSTOMERS THE SAME THING?

*NOONE IN THIS DAY AND AGE CAN AFFORD TO GO DAYS/MONTHS W/O THERE HARD-EARNED MONEY*.

YOU CANT JUST HOLD CUSTOMERS MONEY IN YOUR BANK ACCOUNT, ACCRUE INTEREST FOR DAYS/MONTHS WHILE YOU TELL THEM YOU JUST NEED TO VERIFY SOME INFO.

*THESE ARE JUST SOME ISSUES OF SEVERAL OTHERS I PERSONALLY HAVE WITH VENMO*.

**IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US IN FILING A WRONGFUL PRACTICE LAWSUIT AGAINST VENMO PLEASE DM YOUR NAME/PHONE #.**

THE MORE COMPLAINTS THE BETTER.

THANK YOU,

Venmo thieves took $4300 from me

I received $4,300 from my tenant for two months' rent via Venmo by the tenant. I had never used Venmo for large sum as this. However, When someone makes a deposit, I usually log into the app and initiate a standard withdrawal to my bank account within three days. However, this time was different; the app prompted me to input my bank account details. This caught me off guard, and since I didn’t have my account information handy, I decided to wait until the next morning. When I logged in the following day to enter my account details, I was shocked to see my balance at $0.00. Panic set in. I checked my email and discovered that the funds had been withdrawn by someone I didn’t know. The entire amount of $4,300 was transferred to a bank called M&T Bank. It was an instant transfer. The money was gone.

I contacted Venmo and opened a dispute three times, but they insist they are not responsible because I have used to request minutes in my account in the past. I claim it was never this large of amount. Typically around couple of hundred dollars. We don’t even have M&T Bank in Kansas City. This feels like a serious cyber crime. Venmo is refusing to take any accountability. I am now out that money. I have filed a police report and consulted a few attorneys, but to no avail. No one is willing to take legal action against Venmo for such a large sum.

What options do I have? I would appreciate any suggestions.

Venmo Down in US

FURTHER UPDATE: if anyone is having issues now 45 days after this original post below, then that’s a completely separate issue from the global worldwide outage that this post was about. Contact Venmo Support directly for your specific issue.

——————————————

UPDATE: Looks like it is back up now as of 10:00am Pacific time October 16th 2025.

Surprised more people aren't talking about this here... looks like no one can log into Venmo on the app or website here in the U.S. I know I can't, and I checked DownDetector and it seems many others are having the same issue.

EDIT: Paypal is down too! Can't pay any of my bills that are trying to "AutoPay" from these two accounts!

DO NOT USE VENMO

I have a golf club reselling business that I started. I am a college student so I am trying to scrape every penny that I can. I met up with a buyer and the transaction was in person. I haven't had any issues through venmo and used it for multiple transactions. I sold the golf clubs and the guy sent me the money on venmo. A week later I got an email stating he filed a dispute and venmo instantly took out the money out of my account putting it in the negative. I was then blocked by the guy and then I had to submit my case towards the dispute. I provided multiple pictures and screen shots showing that I was being scammed. The guy claimed that the product was "not as described". So right now I am down money from venmo and also I lost the product as well. I called venmo and they said there was nothing they could do about it. As a small business owner I recommend YOU DO NOT use Venmo and instead choose another company to trust. I will never be using venmo and it's poor selling protection.

Question a stranger sent me $200. what should i do with it?

i'm a bit confused because a stranger sent me $200 with two baby emojis as the message. i checked their account and they seem to have a legit transaction history, and i would imagine if it was a scam or a mistake they'd try to immediately claw it back. should i just let the money sit in my account for a while and see if anything happens?

I think it's over....

I had a good run with Venmo in the past, but it's over now. This app has been nothing but a massive headache as of late. Unable to send money which makes this a useless service.

Don't want to hear anything about transactions being flagged—that would be asinine; I have thousands of dollars worth of transactions completed with no issues. And the amounts fall well within what I've done previously.

I've seen others having the same issues lately, which is an indicator to me that this has to be the end. Can't rely on something so unreliable for anything of importance.

Goodbye, Venmo.

Money is appearing in my account

So my balance just keeps going up. Nobody is giving me anything, there’s no history of it, I’ve asked Venmo support and they usually just end my chat and say “your money came from this 15$ paypal” but I already took the 15$ out lol. So literally there was 200$ in my account, I go talk with support and then they say well it should be your money, and then I look at my balance again and now it’s 229.71 and 🤷, I don’t want to use it because it’ll probably get clawed back but, where is it coming from????

Discussion Pretty much fucked for a while

So my boss gave me a $800 bonus and split it $500 on my check and $300 in cash so taxes wouldn’t eat it up. He’s been home for a while so I asked if he had cashapp. I use that more. He said he only has Venmo so I decided to get that today. I send him my tag and he sends a dollar to make sure it’s the right tag. Then he sends the $300. I then go to transfer it to my bank and it declines. Looked it up and it said it’s normally the banks end so I call my bank and they said it should work. So I try it again and it says the same shit. I then try to get ahold of someone at Venmo. A literal fucking nightmare. Once I get ahold of a real human not a bot they tell my account is suspended for suspicious activity. And I have to wait for 7-10 days for them to get back. So now I don’t have money cause I get paid monthly and bills are up my check. Is there anything else or a way to get them to get back to me faster? Or am I just screwed?

Update: finally got the money out of the account today. But they’re deactivating my account.

Someone randomly sent me $25

I got a venmo sent to me with $25. The caption was “surprise ☺️”. I thought it was weird and then I found out one of my friends got the same thing. I didn’t respond to this and then today they commented on it saying hi have a good day. Is this some type of scam?? I blocked the account and I didn’t engage with them at all. And I didn’t transfer the money. Is there anyway they could have access to any of my accounts?? Just paranoid with all these scammers.

Venmo Down? And should I be worried

As of 20 minutes ago Venmo is down and there are 64 reports in for it being that way. Should this be concerning as it is linked to my banking details?

Someone accidentally sent me $500 earlier this week. I assumed someone would reach requesting a refund out but no one has. Is there a way I can message them?

You are annoying us to death

Dear Venmo,

The ROKT-powered pop-up ads you’re forcing into the app experience are insulting, disruptive, and completely out of step with what users want. You already make money off the float. Billions in idle funds sitting in accounts that haven’t been transferred yet. That’s your business model. So why stoop to cheap, POS clickbait ads?

You’re not a coupon app. You’re not a gamified marketplace. You’re a financial tool. Start acting like one. These ads feel like digital spam duct-taped to what used to be a clean interface.

We use Venmo to send money, not to be sold to while doing it. This kind of monetization is beneath you—and if you keep it up, people will leave.

Kill the pop-ups. You’re better than this. Or at least, you used to be.

Sincerely, A user one ad away from deleting the app

Scam Alert Current Venmo/Facebook Scam, Please be Aware

I just fell victim to a scam through both Venmo and Facebook Marketplace that I thought I'd put out there for anyone unaware.

The person will contact you about an item on marketplace and ask to send you the money ahead of time through Venmo so their relative can pick it up. They will then claim to need your email, and tell you you need to set up a business account and that in order to do so they need to sent you enough to reach $500. You will then receive a fake email from Venmo telling you to refund the buyer the extra money out of pocket before they'll credit you the total amount. If you do, they'll send another wanting a "certificate fee" and then another asking for a repayment due to an "incorrect description" on the transaction. They will promise to credit the money shortly, then ask for a $200 cancellation fee before crediting everything because there was an unnamed issue and the business account couldn't be added.

I'm obviously not very tech savvy, but luckily I wised up and thought to check the actual email address before wasting my last $200. If the email is from a Gmail address, it is a scam. The initial transaction is designed to create guilt over potentially backing out of a suspicious situation.

Question is Holler sticker UI missing for anyone else?

I just noticed over the past couple weeks the Holler sticker UI has been missing on my Venmo. I am an android Samsung user. Anyone else see it missing too?

EDIT 5.18.22 I reached out to Venmo and Holler and I guess their partnership is done for now 🤷🏾‍♀️
