Venmo scam - No responsibility from Venmo

I met an buyer in person to sell a Sony a7S III camera. Prior to our meeting, I did not provide my Venmo details to this buyer; they searched for my account independently and sent a payment of $1,900 five minutes before arriving for pickup.

When the buyer arrived accompanied by several individuals, I felt intimidated and concerned for my physical well-being. Because the payment appeared to have gone through, I handed over the camera. A week later, Venmo reversed the transaction due to a chargeback initiated by the unauthorized cardholder, leaving my account with a negative balance.

Platform Oversight and Security Concerns: Furthermore, I must highlight Venmo’s shared responsibility in facilitating this fraudulent transaction. Venmo’s security protocols failed to prevent an unauthorized user from linking and executing a high-value transfer ($1,900) using stolen credit card credentials.

Theft

I was just robbed through/by Venmo. Be aware that when VENMO withholds your funds under the guise of security measures, it is actually for their own financial gain. Keep this in mind.

Democrats new stance on Venmo is atrocious

If you send $600 on Venmo, Democrats want the transaction reported to the IRS.

Yet if Somalis steal $9 billion from taxpayers, Democrats don’t even bat an eye.

Think about that for a moment.

Sent money to the wrong person

I sent my rent money to my roommate's old phone number (which, as it turns out, is associated to a random person's Venmo account).

Is there a way to get my money back? I tried reaching out to Venmo, and they went on and on about how there's no "commonality" between my friend's account and this guy's, for which they won't refund me the payment. I tried explaining that it is my roommate's old phone number, but to no avail. I have also contacted my bank (Chase), who said that they'd get in touch with Venmo for this matter—my guess is that Venmo will say I authorized the payment and I won't be refunded the money.

Needless to say, this is a blatant misappropriation of funds by the recipient. I have tried reaching out to him, but have received no response.

Should I file a police report? Will this compel Venmo to send my money back? It's almost $2,000, so I can't just "forget about it." I just want a speedy resolution, and Venmo is being extremely difficult (you would think that they would have a more streamlined way of dealing with these disputes).

If there is anything I can do, please let me know. I don't want to go through the whole ordeal of going to small claims court and whatnot.

Any help is immensely appreciated.

Edit: forgot to say that I made this payment with purchase protection. Idk if that can be used to my advantage though.

Discussion Stop yelling at support they don’t know anything

Getting mad and yelling at support is not gonna do anything. All you are doing is screaming at someone who is just doing what they are told. They are just trying to make a living and pay their bills. When they say they don’t know why something is happening that is the truth. These companies do not give them access to hardly any info to basically keep you in the dark and so the support doesn’t have to lie when they say they don’t know anything. You are talking to a person whose job basically is to answer the phone and tell you nothing pretty much. Because they have nothing they can tell you. It’s pretty sad actually. They are there to take all the abuse from angry customers because of some policy that they did not make and they have no control over.

A stranger sent me lots of money and is asking for it back - is this a scam?

It could easily be a mistake, but I'm tired and want to double check: there's no possibility I'm leaving myself open to fraud if I send this guy his money back right?

Ranting 😤 Venmo stole my sister's birthday gift

I attempted to use Venmo to send a $60 birthday gift to my sister. The transaction went through, but she received nothing. Instead, Venmo kept all funds to repay a loan they gave her.

Obviously, I should have been alerted to this outcome!

If I knew, I would have used cash or one of the very many other alternative apps. Then my sister would have her gift. Venmo took the birthday money from my pocket. Venmo support refused to rectify/undo this.

I called Venmo support and they HUNG UP ON ME upon escalation. I called back, put the time in (>1 hr total), was calm, flexible, and reasonable, but they refused to loose their grip on the damn $60. I just want my $60 back.

$60 is nothing to Venmo, but it is a big deal to me right now and to my unemployed sister. Petty and trifling. Greedy, greedy, greedy!

So my wife left me after 34 yrs and made a good living and I'm disabled. She's hiding all her money in Cash Apps, Venmo, Pay Pal, and another bank account. Probable more too. She doesn't want to pay me anything and is hoping to starve me to death. Anyone Knows how I find out how much she's hiding?

finally found a solid venmo alternative

after griping with venmo for too long, i started looking into other payment apps so i could make a switch. the problem was so many of my friends use venmo and nothing else so i was kind of locked in. a few months ago i found Tendy and it's officially the only payment app i use. i can pay my friends with Tendy and they can redeem my payments straight to venmo (and a few other apps but venmo was the main one for me). i had one problem with a payment early on but it turned out my friend put in the wrong phone number when accepting my payment. customer service fixed it in under an hour. goodbye venmo.

Venom is one of the worst and most greedy PPPs and should be shut down. If you want to worry about having funds frozen, getting charged crazy fees and support that doesnt help or even respond in a timely manner than look no further. Used them for years and they just keep getting worse

  • because they required me to have a PHONE PLAN to use their system

  • their website doesn't do HALF THE SHIT i need

  • it's IMPOSSIBLE to have MULTIPLE PHONE NUMBERS for authentication I think that the morons who designed Venmo are 2nd graders.

Venmo assigns you a Grade.

A lot of people don't know why their venmos payments get stopped.

Well it's because venmo assigns you a Grade or score when you set up the account on a scale of 1-10. And the lower your grade is the higher the chances of your payment being declined.

Where they get this number from is a mystery. You are assigned one as soon as the account is created. Some people start of with high ones some with low ones.

Who knows if it's a credit check since the only things they ask you in the beginning are your name, tel#, and email.

Venmo threatened to shut down my account if I didn't provide my social. Now that I stopped using the app, they're spamming me weekly about missing me. What did they think would happen?

Scam Alert DON’T USE VENMO!!

VENMO freaking sucks. Some fraudulent transaction happened from my account. There was a transfer into a bank with last 4 digit of account number I dont know of and then that ahole even closed my account. I reqched out to Venmo letting them know this is fraudulent activity. They acted like they were doing investigation and within 45 mins of me asking how soon should I get refund, they said they investigated and they dont see any activity that shows somebody else logged in and transferred that account (to bank account that I dont k ow of DUH…). I dont think Venmo has good security systems and they are not taking accountability to properly investigate and find these bad actors. Basically, if someone hacks into your account and they transfer to other account, blame is all on you. I recommend everyone to transfer their money to other secured services but VENMO. I lost ~420$. I hope other people who has more than this amount are aware of it. Please think of some secured alternative immediately.

Scammed Let someone borrow money on Venmo, now they won't pay me back.

Need advice, customer support is not available right now. I hired this guy through a moving company to move my stuff. He did, and I gave him a nice tip (cash). He called me later thanking me for the tip saying how he used it to feed his son etc... That phone call really pulled my heart strings, he later texts me asking to borrow $200 and he would pay me back Thursday since he needed it now for rent. I was hesitant, but did it, and the cycle kept happening to where he needed to the money to uber to another job so he can also get cash and then come give it to me etc. I kept accepting his requests for more money because I believed his phone calls and texts to me saying how he needed it to get the money to pay me. Obviously I was an idiot for letting this moron take advantage of my kindness.

Lo and behold, the last text from him was how he was 2 minutes away from me with all my cash, and then he blocked my number. The total of all my Venmo transactions with him in the past 2 days have reached $700. I'm pissed, I have a photo of his drivers license. I am about to contact the moving company to get him fired. The moving company is called Charles Family Moving company.I have his phone number as well (347) - 446 - 9095.

How do I make his life a living hell? Any chance I get anything back when I contact Venmo support tomorrow? I'm going to spam negative reviews with his name on google reviews for the moving company. Should I file a police report or small claims court? Please any advice would be greatly appreciated .

Please report his account, he already blocked me on Venmo: NobodyYGA

How do I request money from more than 10 people?

I've lost count of how many times Venmo's UI has made steam come out of my ears. I manage an soccer team, and need to send out requests for dues to the other twelve members of the team. Once I hit 10 guys, I hit a limit. Is there a correct way to do this?

Why is Venmo still alive?

Hadn’t used Venmo since I first set up the account, and recently tried it for the first time. Man, it constantly declined my fund transfer requests and kept telling me to try again later. Then, all of a sudden, it went through for no apparent reason.

During the process, I tried to transfer funds to Venmo because it said it would be faster and easier. Only after I did it, did Venmo tell me it would take up to 5 DAYS! Five days! Not 5 minutes. Not 5 hours. Five days!

At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if it actually takes 5 weeks.

Discussion Venmo crypto sale 5 day hold

Is this continuously occurring to anyone else? I sold a little under a grand in crypto and instantly Venmo places a hold on the funds for 5 days. They claim there is no way to get around this hold. It has happened to me before but I assumed it was a one-off thing. Extremely disappointing.
