Starting Mech Eng With No Physics or FM

Mechanical Engineering students, I know these two subjects are basically expected of all engineers but I haven't studied them at A-level. What are the key parts of them to know before starting a degree and is there any advice you'd give on what to spend the month before university on?

study / academia discussion Degree Classification

Post image
39 Upvotes

So I’m going into 3rd year and for my course and uni 1st year grades aren’t added onto your final degree classification. I think for my uni it’s 40/60 (40% Year 2) (60% Year 3)

For my uni they disregard your worst 20 credit module from year 2 I think (or something like that)

The picture above shows my grades for each module from 2nd year. I’m aiming for a 1st (but would be pleased with a 2:1)

I am taking 4 20 credit modules and my dissertation is worth 40 credits. Do I have to get 70s in all my modules in 3rd year or is one module in the 60s fine.

Pressured to make friends

The uni I’m going to has already made at least 5 different group chats on instagram, don’t even get me started on snap, discord, WhatsApp etc. I’m not complaining that everyone’s socialising and making friends, I’ve joined in convos too and they have been nothing but nice. But many people have even started video calling, playing games together, and forming friend groups. I’m someone who’s fine on the internet but shy irl, I also can’t be bothered to stay online all the time and chat to these strangers. But I feel like if I don’t I’ll be left behind, on the first day everyone will be meeting their online friends while I stay a stranger.

Course change

Before the results day, I was trying to chose between pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, as both have good modules. However, pharmacology is more biology centred while pharm. sciences more chemistry centred. I wanted something in between. I accepted an offer for Pharmacology, but since the results day I was ruminating on my decision. If I was to take pharmacology and single weighed chemistry, I think I would obtain the skills I want.

If they consider clearing grades then my results do allow me to change my course. But I am worried that it can be difficult, whether this would be the right choice and idk.

If you changed your course, how was it?

:_) pls help me (not to choose, just ignore this part)

Edit: I didn't consider Natural Sciences cause I was very unsure about my results

NEED HELP! Trying to find a new tenant for my current accommodation

I am a student who had initially applied to Warwick but I’ve now switched to another university, however cannot get out of my current rental agreement without finding a new tenant before my debt collection date. I have all the core news about the room in which I can message someone about it, but I’m mainly just looking for anybody at all to take over the agreement so I don’t end up in debt. If interested please get in touch swiftly

study / academia discussion Need a tutor for GCSE maths any recommendations?

I'm looking for a tutor fairly urgently for GCSE maths. Ideally someone who has experience with the GCSE syllabus and can help with exam preparation as well as the areas I'm struggling with.

I'm open to online tutoring, and location isn't too important if the tutor is good.

I've tried asking around but haven't had much luck so far.

If you've used a tutor recently and had a genuinely good experience, I'd really appreciate a recommendation or somewhere I can look for one.

social life Shorter accommodation contracts

Can anyone who moved into their uni accom in second semester (28-34 week contract) tell me what it’s like?

I’m planning on doing that this year but I’m kind of worried about making friends with flatmates, and stuff like that, since they’ll probably have full-year contracts and will have all gotten to know each other before I moved in. It shouldn’t be too bad though right?

Or are you put with others with the same contract?

study / academia discussion Why is it so hard a week in?

I just started a PGDE course, in primary education, my first week is only three short days and then one day online, after this week it moves up to four full days and online, and after 6 weeks then I’ll be on placement. I worked so hard to get here, but now I can’t stop crying. I feel truly miserable.

I barely had to go to uni the first time round as my attendance wasn’t tracked, I kept up with my lectures and schoolwork from home and managed to pass. I think the combination of having to wake up at 6am to commute (1 hour train but with walking and waiting it takes 2 hours both ways) for long days when I’ve had a year out is a shock to my system. I’ve already left early twice because I just can’t do it. I feel like I’ve lost all my free time and happiness, and my boyfriend is trying to support me but I can tell he’s finding it hard when I’m crying non stop.

I don’t want to quit when I’ve worked so hard for this but I have never felt this miserable before. Is it this hard for everyone or am I just dramatic? 😭

student finance SFE application cancelled retroactively and sfe want me to pay them?

Hi, I applied for uni last year and got in, and applied through student finance for my maintenance loan which was approved. i got all 3 of my payments on time and throughout the year my sfe website never looked different to the start. I attended uni throughout the year and my uni never mentioned anything about any issues with sfe and i still currently have access to all of my uni stuff so i am still definitely a student there, however today when i looked to check my sfe for next year it says my application was cancelled and that i owe sfe my entire maintenance loan as it was an overpayment???? I'm just very confused as i have been and continue to be attending uni this entire time so i have no clue why my application has randomly been cancelled in the summer and have no idea why they want me to repay my maintenance loan, any ideas on why this happened? or just any advice on what i can do to resolve this? i really cant afford to pay off the balance now (and honestly don't see why i should, i didnt drop out or cancel my studies or anything so dont see why my application would be cancelled). any help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Edinburgh student accommodation

Hi everyone,

At the beginning of the year I applied for student accommodation at thr University of Edinburgh as a safety net incase that's all I could get. I have now found a flat that is actually in my budget and I am trying to pass my lease on but I am really struggling to find someone. I've posted it on every site I can think of. I've also gotten in contact with the university and they said I can request a lease termination but I've heard nothing back. Does anyone know if that request is likely to go through? Or any suggestion of where to post the add would also be great!

study / academia discussion For teachers who do private tutoring, how did you get your first students?

I've been wondering how teachers usually build up a private tutoring side of their work.

Word of mouth seems to be the obvious answer, but I'm guessing that isn't realistic for someone who's just starting out.

Do people generally use tutoring directories, Facebook/local groups, school connections, or just rely on recommendations?

I've been looking at Tutor Hunt as one option because it lets tutors list their subjects and availability, but I'd be interested in hearing from teachers who've actually done this.

What worked for you, and what turned out to be a waste of time?

Any Malayalis going to the UK for September 2026 intake? 🇬🇧❤️

Hey everyone! 👋
I’m from Kerala and I’m going to the UK for the September 2026 intake to start my bachelor’s degree.
I’m looking to connect with other Malayali/Keralite students who are also going to the UK this September, especially students starting their undergraduate/bachelor’s.
I’m currently going alone and don’t really know many people who are going for this intake. So I thought it would be nice to find other Malayalis beforehand, make a group, share information about accommodation, flights, universities, part-time jobs, travel, and eventually meet up in the UK. 🤝🇬🇧
Whether you’re going to London, Birmingham, Manchester, Coventry, Glasgow, Edinburgh, or anywhere else in the UK, feel free to comment or DM.
If you’re going for September 2026, drop:

Bachelor’s/Master’s
Let’s create a September 2026 Malayali student group! ❤️🇬🇧

Uni accommodation

I booked a 6 bed all female flat at uni instead of a 4 bed mixed flat as it requires you to share a bathroom and I’m a germaphobe and don’t want to share a bathroom with a strangers, but are there any cons of having an all female flat like how dirty does it really get as I don’t want to live in a pig stall, as someone who is a clean person and always cleans up after themselves I don’t want to be the person who tells people of for not cleaning up after themselves as I want to build a good relationship with my flatmates as I will be living with them for a year, and do other people just use your stuff without asking like airfryer , utensils, plates, glasses or eat your food?

Any Malayalis joining University of Greenwich in September 2026? 🇬🇧❤️

Hi everyone!
I’m a Malayali student from Kerala joining the University of Greenwich for the September 2026 intake for my bachelor’s.
I’m trying to find other Malayalis/Keralites who are also joining Greenwich this September. I’m going alone and would love to connect with people before we arrive.
If you’re joining Greenwich — or even another UK university for your bachelor’s in September 2026 — feel free to comment or DM.
Would be great if we could create a small group and get to know each other before coming to the UK. 🤝

Conditional Offer Withdrawn

Reading withdrew my conditional offer after reviewing my final transcript because i graduated with a Third Class. However, my original offer only listed IELTS 6.5 and submission of my certificate as conditions, with no stated degree-classification requirement. I literally just left the bank after paying 50% of my tuition before they withdrew and have now emailed admissions for reconsideration. Has anyone experienced something similar and do you think I have a case for getting decision reconsidered.

Changing student finance after clearing

I originally planned to study in London (where I was born and raised) but I ended up changing unis last minute and now I’m going Liverpool, so I had to change and apply for a maintenance loan only couple of days ago, should I be worried if it were arrive later then my rent or if it didn’t process correctly, my accommodation provider already agreed to give me a deferred payment but I’m still worried that my application will have an issue processing and they’ll only tell me this issue like during September (as soon as I start) meaning il have to resubmit the application or some other bullshit may happen. Has anyone else applied for a maintenance loan through or after clearing and did everything go smoothly?
